Abstract The Professional Communication Studies (PCS) department at the University of Cape Town offers courses at senior undergraduate and postgraduate level. This study evaluates new developments since 2011 of the language development support classes, which are offered to linguistically weak students. The content and structure of the classes is considered in light of current theoretical debates as to the value of explicit teaching of grammar in the context of non-technical generic competencies for engineers. A pilot study of the programme over two years encompassed four modules attended by a total of 62 participants, comprising students from the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. Results were positive. The majority of students (above 70%) strongly agreed that the intervention had aided them, with no students giving a negative response. Open-ended questions elicited the areas of tuition most needed: weaknesses in sentence structure, verb-noun concord, use of conjunctions and punctuation. Conclusions, supported by literature, are that as a supplement to formal classes, a language enrichment module is effective in improving students’ English written communication, that it supports other interventions and that the module be expanded.

Background: Doctors' interpersonal and communication skills correlate with improved health care outcomes. International medical organisations require competency in communication skills. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) developed a toolbox for assessing this competency and 5 others, yet none initially for teaching these skills.
Purpose and methods: The original focus in the development of the ACGME competencies was evaluation. This paper represents a significant step toward defining methods for teaching communication skills competencies. A total of 16 medical education leaders from medical schools worldwide, participating in the 2003 Harvard Macy Institute Program for Physician Educators, worked together to: (1) further define the ACGME competency in interpersonal and communication skills; (2) delineate teaching strategies for each level of medical education; and (3) create a teaching toolbox to integrate communication skills competencies into medical curricula. Four subgroups defined subcompetencies, identified teaching strategies for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate medical training and brought their work to the larger group. The expanded communication competencies and teaching strategies were determined by a consensus of the larger group, presented to 80 Harvard Macy Scholars and Faculty for further discussion, then finalised by consensus.
Conclusion: The teaching toolbox expands the ACGME core communication competencies, adds 20 subcompetencies and connects these competencies to teaching strategies at each level of medical training. It represents the collaboration and consensus of a diverse international group of medical education leaders in a variety of medical specialities and institutions, all involved in teaching communication skills. The toolbox is applicable globally across different settings and specialities, and is sensitive to different definitions of health care.

This paper reflects on the teaching and testing methods of a module on intercultural awareness; socialising and writing skills and looks at how to find more suitable ways of assessing these skills at tertiary level

Every individual shares a multifaceted relationship with colleagues at the workplace. As it is known to all that human beings are not machines who can start working within seconds or at a push button. They need someone to talk, to discuss ideas and to share their happiness and other emotions. We cannot expect an individual to start working like a robot with complete involvement in the work without knowing with whom he is working. A man is not indifferent; he needs people around. Without people working around the workplace turns hostile. An isolated environment demotivates an individual and spreads negativity which ultimately hampers performance. It will not be wrong to submit that workplaces are like homes; the more we are comfortable with each other, the more prosperity we gain. To achieve a common goal, mutual respect and a sense of safety are must at the workplace. It is an established notion that to work with people having different educational and cultural backgrounds is not that difficult rather than to work with people having different mindsets. It is much essential that employees share a healthy and happy relationship with each other at the workplace. Mutual understanding and mutual respect are the two hallmarks of meaningful Communication.A healthy bonding between the employer and the employee also strengthen productivity. When effective communication practices are in place at the workplace then employees feel more connected and committed to the organization. The Communication Breakdown at the workplace creates problems. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of Strong Employee Relations at Workplace and the Impact of these relations on the organisational success.

Few studies have been conducted in Greece focusing on the education of conversational skills of individuals with developmental disabilities. The aim of this qualitative research was to educate seven individuals with developmental disabilities, who are living in an intensive treatment residential facility, in social exchanges and particularly in conversational skills. The participants were formed into a group and were given images to discuss among themselves using questions and answers. The results of the study showed that all participants who started from a zero level gained the ability to participate in conversation according to their potential. The training content and the structure provided for this intervention increased the number of exchanges and afforded the opportunity and the means to socialize. In conclusion, as a result of this intervention, it turns out that people with developmental disabilities clearly demonstrated that they are able to learn conversational skills in a group setting.

The pediatric encounter requires skillful communication between patient and physician, expert communication with parents and other family members, and an understanding of family dynamics and the child's cognitive and developmental stage.
There is a direct association between the physician's interpersonal and communication skills and ability to refl ect, and health care quality and outcomes. All encounters between patients and health care professionals, and among members of health care teams, take place within a broader moral universe that includes personal integrity, professionalism, and the everyday ethics of practice. . .

A professional course program like engineering strives to get the maximum number of its students placed through campus interviews. While communication skills have been added in all the engineering courses with the aim to improve their performance in placement, the syllabus mostly concentrates on the development of four language skills. The students are not made aware of the employability skills and their significance. This essay intends to enlist the importance of skills and why students need to be aware of the skills they possess and how they can work on packaging their candidature around a few skills. The discussion starts by addressing the apparent gap between academic programs for engineering students and industry skills requirements. A list of vital employability skills from the standpoint of engineering students follows, with a discussion on how to potentially develop such skills through campus life. The essay stresses the role of academia in filling this gap by acting as facilitators in a three-step process (i.e., awareness, self-analysis, and acquisition). The author concludes that the combination of both employability skills along with an engineering degree should ensure students meet the high expectations of the employers.

The traditional school system included adopting as much information without critical thinking while modern school tends to democratic education that is focused on the development of individual abilities of each student and to develop his critical thinking. In traditional teaching communication the teacher dominates. Such is the autocratic communication which was reflected in a bossy role of teachers while in modern teaching the emphasis is on the student's role and the democratic communication. In pursuing the goal of non-experimental empirical research that we set in our study, we found that there is a statistically significant connection between interpersonal communication in teaching and students' success, and that those students whose teachers mostly used the democratic model of communication in teaching achieved statistically significantly better school achievements than those students whose teachers use mainly the autocratic model of communication. The survey was conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Herzegovina-Neretva Canton) and a sample of 423 respondents (322 students and 101 teachers of primary schools). Through the results, contents and messages of this paper we have tried to make you aware of the importance of this segment of communication in the learning process and as such to make it the subject of everyday questioning and continuous work that should lead to its improvement, and thus to improving the quality of the entire educational process.

The aim of this research is to study the correlation between the aggression level and communication skills of elite rugby athletes. The study was conducted with a total of 115 rugby athletes (37 female, 78 male) who played on teams that took place in the Turkish Rugby League during 2016-2017. A 4-question demographic survey and the Kiper (1984) Aggression Scale were applied to the athletes as well as the Communication Skills inventory of Ersanlı and Balcı. The group of rugby athletes aged 25 and below was found to be at a higher bold aggression level compared to the group aged 26 and above (p<0.05). As for the passive aggression subscale scores, the group aged 25 and below was at a lower level compared to the group aged 26 and above (p<0.05). The bold aggression level of rugby athletes with a university education was higher compared to athletes with a high school and elementary education (p<0.05). In addition, a positive correlation was found between bold aggression subscale scores and total communication skills scores. As a result, it can be said that the communication skills of athletes need to be increased in order to decrease disruptive and passive aggression and increase bold behavior. As communication skills improve, the possibility of displaying aggressive approaches and behavior decrease.

Background: Despite numerous studies exploring medical students’ attitudes to communication skills learning (CSL), there are apparently no studies comparing different experiential learning methods and their influence on students’ attitudes. Aims: We compared medical students’ attitudes to learning communication skills before and after a communication course in the data as a whole, by gender and when divided into three groups using different methods. Method: Second-year medical students (n1⁄4129) were randomly assigned to three groups. In group A (n1⁄442) the theatre in education method, in group B (n 1⁄4 44) simulated patients and in group C (n 1⁄4 43) role-play were used. The data were gathered before and after the course using Communication Skills Attitude Scale. Results: Students’ positive attitudes to learning communication skills (PAS; positive attitude scale) increased significantly and their negative attitudes (NAS; negative attitude scale) decreased significantly between the beginning and end of the course. Female students had more positive attitudes than the male students. There were no significant differences in the three groups in the mean scores for PAS or NAS measured before or after the course. Conclusions: The use of experiential methods and integrating medical students to appreciate the importance of CSL.

ObjectiveThis article investigated residents’ narratives to gain their understandings of which patterns are challenging in doctor–patient conversations.DesignQualitative narratological framework.ParticipantsWe analysed 259 narratives from 138 residents’ oral recounts of communication with patients in which they had felt challenged.ResultsThe analysis identified an ideal narrative for the doctor–patient encounter with the resident as protagonist pursuing the object of helping the patient with his health problem. Disruptions of this ideal narrative were at play when challenges occurred. Regardless of medical setting, challenges were often related to the establishment of a common object, and the communication actants had to go through negotiations, disagreements or even battles when trying to reach a common object. Challenges also occurred when actants which in the ideal narrative should act as helpers become opponents. We find narratives where patients, relatives and colleagues become...

Communication skills are teachable and learnable skills, which have a vital position among other clinical skills because a student’s ability to communicate can increase empathy. The focus of this article is to determine how senior students evaluate themselves regarding communication competence and whether gender has an impact on their perception. The study included 128 volunteering students, using the Communication Competence Scale, consisting of 30 questions, as a data collection tool and the independent samples t-test for statistical evaluations. The evaluation of all participants showed that male participants had the highest score, and female participants had the lowest. However, there was no statistically significant difference between female and male participants’ total scores (p = 0.605). There was a statistically significant difference between female and male students in terms of the social competency, empathy, and adaptability. Female scores for empathy were statistically higher than those of males. Male students scored themselves higher than females in terms of social competency and adaptability. In the context of the students’ perceptions of their communication competence, it was determined that females assessed themselves to be more empathetic and males perceived themselves to be more social and adaptable. This research is significant as it is the first study of Turkish veterinary students’ self-perception of communication competence. Communication training may become more robust in veterinary curricula in Turkey, and further research will be affected by this issue.

An initial qualitative investigation was undertaken to determine the parameters defining professional written and spoken communication in industry, professional engineering and built environment bodies and other potential employers of graduates from the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The study questioned whether these parameters are met by the current courses offered by Professional Communication Studies (PCS) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). PCS aims to equip all students graduating from the faculty with communication skills to meet the demands their future careers will make on their ability to write and present technical data. Research into curricula for Professional Communication is founded in current casework. All courses combine established theory with case studies and examples to provide a realistic context for partici- pants to practise their skills.
A sample of interviewees was drawn from the professional accreditation boards, for example, the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP), allied professional bodies, industry stakeholders and potential employers. Comments from respondents were related to the PCS course and an assessment made of its relevance compared with the stated needs. It was concluded that technical professionals write extensively, often present complex data to varied audiences, and that communication skills taught in the PCS course are relevant.

This paper, first written in 1996, should be an historical document. However, in 2012 it is a precise and current description of Technical and Further Education in Australia. The present state government of Victoria, Australia, for example, is currently de-funding TAFEs and aborting their mission, even as Australia is “forced” to import unprecedented numbers of skilled workers from overseas. The paper examines what is obviously a cyclical problem with technical education in many countries – its relatively low status leading to periodic cuts in funding, difficulty in attracting talented career staff, and the cyclical destruction of accumulated skills through casualisation. This document has been published by the Senate of the Australian Parliament as part of a report on the status of teachers.
