Cruise Tourism

This paper will provide an overview of the fundamental changes that the cruise ship business has undergone with the emergence of capitalist globalization and in the context of the Caribbean region. Rising profits and investments in tourism during the later decades of the 20th century and into the 21st century have been an important part of the globalizing economy. This has been a consequence of both the major technological and organizational developments of global capitalism, but also, and most importantly, of the global system's changing social and class relations. The shifting social relations and productive activities that undergird the cruise ship business have meant gains for some involved, most especially, transnational capitalists, and exploitative and contradictory dynamics for many others. Annually millions of tourists from high consuming sectors worldwide partake in brief holiday escapes aboard cruise ship vessels. At the same time, the cruise ship business has become an oligopoly, controlled by a handful of large companies, that has driven many competitors out of business or acquiried them. Labor in the business has become more flexibilized, with low-wage workers (from a variety of nationalities) whose activities are increasingly standardized, monitored and micro-managed. While moving away from indicative development planning (with an eye to national goals), state policymakers in the Caribbean, for their own social reproduction, increasingly promote the interests of transnational capital such as with the cruise ship business. Importantly, labor and environmental protections have been stymied as the cruise ship companies, adept at public relations and skirting regulations, remain largely unaccountable.

This article analyzes how mass-market cruise lines mobilize food, laborers, and built environments to offer passengers cosmopolitanism with the purpose of maintaining a unique business model. It is argued that while companies target a growing demand for culturally immersive dining experiences, they do not seek to offer complete immersion in any one culture but cosmopolitanism through a combination of multiple themed establishments on a mobile platform. Culinary themes are installed using labor and built environments, for instance through the placement of visual and material culture in eateries. While some onboard dining experiences are themed around the cultures of nations on the ship’s itinerary, many evoke international cultures. In studying how mass-market cruise lines as mobile spaces of containment combine both international and localized dining experiences to offer the “world on a ship,” scholars of tourism can better understand how touristic companies produce cosmopolitanism at destinations.

The cruise industry enjoys arguably the most flexible and globalized of all labor markets. Yet, in an apparent paradox, cruise lines face a potential labor shortage, despite the fact that the bulk of their labor is sourced from the Global South where a large labor surplus would seemingly make recruitment a simple process. This paper examines this paradox in greater detail with a focus on the tension that exists between the industry’s demand for a flexible labor force, and the need for workers who maintain the skills required of a cruise ship job. It is argued that the contemporary geography of global labor recruitment is constrained by the particular political, economic and cultural circumstances of individual source countries that make certain cohorts less attractive or available as a workforce. In practice the need for skill and flexibility are not always reconcilable and cruise lines have found that there is a geographic limit to labor market flexibility. The article is based on interviews with various stakeholders involved in either working on cruise ships or in recruiting workers. Special emphasis is placed on Filipino cruise ship workers and labor recruiters as a means to discuss labor recruitment for the entire industry.

Shifting from representationally-oriented analysis of images to analysis of practices—the production, circulation and consumption of tourists’ images, and from photos created by tourists to photos staged, produced and displayed by the industry, this article offers a qualitative, ethnographic study of tourism’s visual culture.
Through observations conducted on a cruise ship, the author offers up-close depiction of photo-taking routines, and of the public display of multiple images of vacationing tourists. The article critically accounts for tourists’ desire to be photographed and portrayed by the industry in terms of visual surveillance (Foucault) under contemporary neoliberal visual regime. It is further argued that public displays of tourists’ images create, through collective  ediation/mediatization, a commercially assembled touristic collective or public.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια, σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της Διεθνούς Ένωσης Κρουαζιέρας (CLIA), καταγράφεται μια συνεχής ανάπτυξη του κλάδου της κρουαζιέρας. Εκτιμάται ότι οι επιβάτες στα κρουαζιερόπλοια θα ξεπεράσουν τα 30.000.000 εκατομμύρια παγκοσμίως. Επίσης, εκτιμάται ότι η παγκόσμια οικονομική συμβολή της κρουαζιέρας θα ανέλθει στα 135 δις δολάρια και θα δημιουργήσει 1,1 εκατομμύρια θέσεις εργασίας.
Η ανάπτυξη της κρουαζιέρας απαιτεί γνώσεις από διάφορα επιστημονικά πεδία π.χ. την κοινωνιολογία, τη νομική επιστήμη, την οικονομική επιστήμη, τη γεωγραφία, τις φυσικές επιστήμες κ.λπ. Cruise tourism as one of the most dynamic and fastest growing segments of tourism industry is shaping tourism activities. The growth rate of global cruise tourism has constantly increased over the last years and the number of cruise passengers is expected to grow worldwide. Cruising as form of leisure tourism is the most expressed in the Caribbean, followed by the Mediterranean as cruising region with increasing cruise passenger rates. The demand for cruise tourism continues to grow and cruise ports will continue to develop an interest in advancing their cruise activities. The paper elaborates on the pattern of cruise port industry with regard to cruise port model of operation governance, two basic types of port operation, namely ports without private entry in port operation and ports with private entry in port operation. Research sample are cruise ports in the Mediterranean and adjoining seas. The main indicators of passenger fl ows are analysed and the intensity, structure and dynamics is identifi ed. Descriptive statistics is used to describe the basic features of the data in the study together with summaries about the sample and the measures. Along with graphics analysis, quantitative analysis of data is performed. Port governance including private entry, especially port operators, is seen as key response to global cruise industry growth, having advantage over public port governance in diverse fi elds of port operation. Research results indicate that cruise ports with private entry in port operation are not geographically concentrated. Cruise ports with private entry in port operation are dominating the market, but cruise ports without private entry are catching up as their growth rate is higher. At the same time cruise ports with private entry in port operation are turning to bigger sized cruise ships increasing overall effi ciency per call. Findings contribute to cruising tourism theory and practice. In practical terms the contribution of this paper is the understanding of current market position of cruise ports with regard to their model of port governance, more precisely the position of ports with private entry in cruise port operation versus cruise ports without private entry in cruise port operation. Sažetak Kruzing turizam, kao jedna od najdinamičnijih grana turizma koja se najbrže razvija, oblikuje aktivnosti u turizmu. Stopa rasta kruzing turizma na svjetskoj razini posljednjih godina neprekidno se povećava, a očekuje se daljnji porast broja putnika na kružnim putovanjima diljem svijeta. Kruzing kao oblik rekreacijskog turizma najizraženiji je na Karibima, a zatim slijedi Mediteran kao kruzing područje u kojemu se broj putnika sve više povećava. Potražnja za kruzing turizmom nastavlja rasti, a luke za kružna putovanja nastavit će razvijati zanimanje za unapređenje svojih kruzing aktivnosti. Ovaj rad istražuje organizaciju u kruzing destinacijama, s osvrtom na model upravljanja lukama za kružna putovanja, preciznije, na dva osnovna tipa rada u lukama-luke u kojima nije omogućen privatan ulazak u njihov rad i luke u kojima je omogućen privatan ulazak u rad. Istraživanje je provedeno u lukama za kružna putovanja na Mediteranu i susjednim morima. Analiziraju se glavni pokazatelji kretanja putnika te se utvrđuju intenzitet, struktura i dinamika. Osnovna obilježja prikupljenih podataka analiziraju se s pomoću deskriptivne statistike te se donose sažeci analize uzorka i mjerenja. Pored grafi čke analize, napravljena je i kvantitativna analiza. Upravljanje lukama u kojima je moguć privatan ulazak u rad luke, posebice operatora, pokazalo se kao ključan odgovor na globalni rast kruzing industrije te su se iskazale prednosti u odnosu na javno upravljanje lukama u brojnim domenama rada luka. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju da luke za kružna putovanja u kojima je omogućen privatan ulazak u njihov rad nisu zemljopisno koncentrirane. Luke za kružna putovanja s privatnim udjelom u radu prevladavaju na tržištu, ali luke za kružna putovanja gdje nije moguće sudjelovanje privatnog sektora u radu luke sustižu ih jer ih je sve više, dok se istovremeno luke za kružna putovanja s privatnim udjelom u radu okreću većim brodovima za kružna putovanja, čime im se povećava ukupna učinkovitost po ticanju. Rezultati istraživanja pridonose teoriji i praksi kruzing turizma. U praksi, doprinos ovoga rada jest u razumijevanju sadašnje situacije luka za kružna putovanja na tržištu s obzirom na njihov model upravljanja, točnije, položaj luka s omogućenim privatnim ulaskom u rad nasuprot onim lukama gdje privatan ulazak u rad nije moguć.

The current COVID-19 cruise tourism crisis has evolved to epic proportions and placed some of the cruise lines on the verge of bankruptcy. This research aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the crisis. Using an inductive qualitative approach, interviews were conducted with eight frequent cruisers who were at home and eight cruise ship employees who were employed by various cruise companies and who were working on cruise ships during the COVID-19 cruise tourism crisis. The findings revealed a systematic failure within the cruise industry management to understand the COVID-19 pandemic. Results of this study highlight the importance of health-related perceived risks on the nature and impact of the COVID-19 cruise tourism crisis. This study supports the overall theory of cruise tourism and crisis management by extending the chaos theory and its principals on the COVID-19 cruise tourism crisis. The managerial implications for cruise lines are outlined.

This issue of cruise line crime is looming just over the horizon and has the potential to become a problem for the cruise line industry, the Caribbean nations, South Florida, and the United States Government. The reality of the situation is that a violent crime committed in international waters on a ship of open registry is largely un-prosecutable.

A Agenda 2030, da Organização das Nações Unidas, e seus 17 Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável e 169 metas, foram analisados e o Objetivo 14 se destaca como orientação em uma pesquisa de tese de doutorado, que apresenta um modelo de estratégia de valor com base nos requisitos da sustentabilidade ambiental para navios de cruzeiros marítimos. O estudo exploratório e descritivo faz um levantamento sobre regulamentações aplicáveis aos princípios da sustentabilidade ambiental, particularmente buscando-se identificar especificidades sobre o ambiente marinho, a vida na água e o tratamento realizado para a conservação e uso sustentável dos oceanos, mares e recursos marinhos. O levantamento descreve a evolução da sustentabilidade e os fatos relevantes, em ordem cronológica, após a segunda guerra mundial, até a Cúpula das Nações Unidas sobre o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, em 2015, quando foi apresentada a Agenda. Em complemento, realizou-se uma pesquisa quantitativa com 72 organizações que interagem com o ambiente marinho, com o intuito de questionar sobre o conhecimento da Agenda. Os resultados refletem a falta de conhecimento das organizações consultadas, em sua maioria, sobre os Objetivos e Metas para o desenvolvimento sustentável.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: a strategic factor for organizations and the chronology of the relevant facts and the Goal 14 as a guidance for the cruise industry ABSTRACT The 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Objectives and 169 targets were analyzed, and Goal 14 stands out as a reference in a doctoral thesis research that proposes value strategy model based on the requirements of environmental sustainability for the cruise ships. This exploratory and descriptive study carries out a research on the regulations applicable to the principles of environmental sustainability in the general scope and in seeking to identify specificities on the marine environment concerning the life in the water and the actions carried out for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources. The research describes the evolution of sustainability considering the most relevant facts in chronological order, since the end of the Second World War, to the UN Summit on Sustainable Development held in 2015 when the Agenda was presented to the world. In addition, a quantitative survey was carried out with 72 organizations that interact with the marine environment, to verify, if there is any knowledge about Agenda. The results indicate the lack of knowledge of most consulted organizations regarding the Objectives and Goals for the sustainable development.

Although worldwide tourism continues to develop and grow, the tourism research community remains relatively new since new fields of study are emerging, following the changes of the sector. Tourism empirical research is characterized by a lack of unifying theoretical perspectives and considerable fragmentation, also known as "the poverty of the tourism theory". Cruise research being a sub-category of tourism is also subject to similar criticism. This paper provides a further up-to-date investigation regarding "the poverty of the cruise theory hypothesis", reassessing a significant study on cruise related publications, published by Papathanasis and Beckman in 2010. Does cruise industry related research remains relatively thin worldwide and Greece especially where the tourism sector is regarded as a pillar of macroeconomic growth? In order to provide current evidence we review all cruise related academic publications from 2009 to 2016 using mainstream bibliographic databases. We also assess if cruise tourism remains an underrepresented field among Greek researchers and examine its contents and focus.

This article presents the waste management on board Disney Cruise Line (DCL) company ships. In previous papers, we focused on the environmental policies of the DCL company, on the cruise itinerary waste management plans for the enterprise's ships, waste collection, sorting and storage and food waste management on DCL ships, as well as on dangerous and medical waste management on board DCL company ships. The paper consists of an analytical view of the environmental personnel's activities, in-house regulations and of various recordings and field observations. It presents detailed information on waste collection, sorting and transportation on board company ships, as well as on waste processing, storage and disposal procedures, waste registers and reports filed by employees, White Data Box and the equipment used for waste processing and recycling. The study concludes that the DCL company is committed to minimizing its fleet's environmental impact by means of adopting new technologies, generating less waste, training its staff and instructing its guests, and raising awareness on environmental issues. In 2013, the company was declared the most environmentally-responsible cruise line. All crew members must fully comply with the DCL company's environmental requirements and policy. Both employees and customers must pay attention to the practices that can result in accidental pollution. Waste collection procedures and the prevention of improper waste disposal are carefully monitored at all times. DCL makes continuous efforts to minimize waste amounts and associated risks on its ships. This entails using the appropriate storage, use and disposal procedures, and extends all the way to operation and event planning and supply and consumable purchases. DCL's environmentally friendly vision is best described by these values and actions:

With ever changing business world, achieving higher level of work performance through managing employee’s work-life balance is still challenging and remains as an issue in literature as well as practically in organizations. Unlike in most of other industries, the situation of the hospitality industry is more critical and the work life balance issue has become an inherent characteristic of the industry. According to Deery (as cited in Monathy, 2014), work-life balance is heavily impact on employee’s performance and since the work-life balance issue is an inherent characteristic of hotel industry, their work performances are mostly at lower levels. Therefore, the study focuses on the work-life balance of the hotel industry employees and its impact on employee performance. The study is based on three main dimension of the work life balance i.e.  Job Content, Personal Factors and Family factors. The study was carried out at the John keels (Cinnamon) Hotel chain in Sri Lanka using 187 executive level employees. Data were collected through a standard and validated questionnaire survey and face to face discussions with family members of the selected employees. Data which collected through questionnaire survey were analyzed by using multiple linear regressions and content analysis was employed to summarize the data which collected through discussion. The result revealed that there is high positive relationship between all three dimensions and employee performance.  The factors related job content, personal and family are positively contributed for the employee performance. The hotel industry can further improve the employee performance through creating a conductive work environment which allows the employee to have a work-life balance. Confirming the previous findings the current study reveals that the work-life balance positive impacts on work performance. This study will contribute to hotel industry to improve the work- life balance of the employees in order to improve the employee work performance.

Scopo del presente lavoro è stato quello di esaminare l’industria crocieristica sotto il profilo dell’offerta. Al fine di disporre di una base informativa originale, si è realizzato un apposito database aggiornato al 2019 contenente un panel di informazioni di tipo dimensionale sulle caratteristiche delle navi da crociera che ha permesso, tra le altre analisi condotte, anche di confermare un fatto ben noto agli operatori del settore e cioè la polarizzazione dell’offerta tra pochi gruppi che operano sul mercato attraverso una pluralità di marchi. Successivamente si è provveduto ad analizzare le performance economiche dell’ultimo decennio per i più importanti gruppi crocieristici, esaminandone i ricavi (generalmente in crescita a meno di eventi economici o temporali caratterizzati dal carattere dell’eccezionalità), le aree geografiche maggiormente presidiate ed alcune informazioni statistiche riguardanti i passeggeri trasportati. Si sono in seguito considerate le principali strategie messe a punto dalle compagnie legate al posizionamento delle navi, alla stagionalità ed alla durata delle crociere. In particolare si è potuto notare come, mentre i Caraibi abbiano mantenuto negli ultimi sette anni una quota di mercato stabilmente attorno al 34%/35%, il Mediterraneo, storicamente la seconda destinazione per importanza per le crociere, abbia perso peso in termini letti di bassi offerti. Ciò a fronte invece di una sensibile crescita dell’Australasia. Per il futuro tuttavia, quantomeno quello imminente, il mercato delle crociere è destinato ad espandersi in termini territoriali a nuove aree di interesse. Si è posta attenzione infine agli ordinativi di nuove navi fino al 2027, mostrando come l’industria crocieristica sia destinata ad aumentare la propria capacità in maniera consistente in termini di offerta. E ciò non solo per i grandi gruppi con mega navi, ma anche per realtà che operano con navi medio-piccole. Una simulazione al 2027 ha mostrato come la quota di mercato dei principali operatori resti sostanzialmente inalterata, mentre sembra validata l’affermazione che l’industria crocieristica abbia raggiunto le proprie economie di scala in termini di dimensioni delle navi.

Η κρουαζιέρα ως τρόπος αναψυχής είναι γνωστή από την αρχαιότητα και αποτελούσε προνόμιο των εύπορων κοινωνικών τάξεων. Στην διαδρομή του χρόνου τα κοινωνιολογικά και χωρο-χρονικά χαρακτηριστικά της κρουαζιέρας μεταβλήθηκαν. Στην εποχή μας η κρουαζιέρα έχει καταστεί σημαντικός τομέας του θαλάσσιου τουρισμού που προσελκύει πλήθος επιβατών, όχι μόνο υψηλού αλλά και μέσου οικονομικού επιπέδου.

La industria de los cruceros se halla inmersa en un contexto de cambio estructural, derivado principalmente por los efectos de la crisis económica. Tras años de crecimiento sostenido, el sector muestra claros síntomas de estancamiento. Esta situación, no obstante, no es nada nueva. A lo largo de su historia, la actividad crucerística ha experimentado muchos y repentinos cambios de tendencia, incluyendo una época de fuerte expansión durante los años de entreguerras mundiales y una coyuntura depresiva a comienzos del último cuarto del siglo pasado. Todo ello, y mucho más, se analiza en el libro La evolución de los cruceros marítimos en España, editado por el Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Valencia. La estructura del ensayo es cronológica, dividiendo éste en seis capítulos que abarcan cada una de las grandes etapas por las que ha transcurrido la historia del crucerismo en España.
Una de las virtudes del trabajo es que cada una de las secciones comienza con un acercamiento a las características del sector a nivel mundial, de manera que el lector no especialista en el tema puede situarse y comparar los desarrollos que estaban produciéndose en nuestro país con lo que estaba ocurriendo en el resto del mundo. El autor enfoca el estudio de cada fase histórica tanto desde la perspectiva emisora como receptora, así como desde la oferta y la demanda, y extiende el análisis a todas las variantes del turismo marítimo, desde las pequeñas excursiones a los grandes cruceros elitistas. Cruise tourism has seen a growing and constant demand in the United States and Europe. In Brazil, this market has been in the spotlight, with exponential growth in demand. However, since the 2011/2012 season, the rate of growth has been decreasing. This exploratory and descriptive study uses statistical methods to analyze the factors that influence the behavior of the Brazilian cruise market, from the perspective of ship owners and tour operators. To achieve this objective, the study was developed in three stages, with three specific goals. The first of these goals was to identify the reality of supply and demand in the Brazilian cruise market versus the global market. For this purpose, historical data on supply and demand were identified, using indirect documentation, documentary and bibliographic techniques, and mathematical analysis, calculating the exponential and accumulated growth in demand. The second specific objective was to determine the prospects of the Brazilian and world cruise markets over the next five years, from 2014. To achieve these trend projections, statistical regression functions were used. To fulfil the third specific goal, which was to analyze the main factors that influence the behavior of the Brazilian cruise market from the perspective of maritime companies and tour operators, a survey was conducted using a quantitative approach, through the use of a semi-structured questionnaire, with a 5-point Likert scale, containing multiple-choice questions and one semi-open questions. This questionnaire was applied to 29 respondents: 11 managers of shipping companies and 14 tour operators, all affiliated with ABREMAR (Brazilian Association of Maritime Companies) and four respondents with more than ten years of experience in the cruise sector. To analyze the data of this third step, a descriptive statistical technique was used. The results indicate several factors that influence the behavior of the Brazilian cruise market; however, two stand out in relation to the current situation, suggesting that a reduction in the supply of ships, and consequently, in the number of available berths, in the Brazilian market, was a strategic decision adopted by the cruise companies, due to the deficient port infrastructure and the high operating costs, leading to a drop in demand for cruise passengers.

Il primo capitolo ricostruisce il quadro storico in cui esso è nato e si è sviluppato; il secondo presenta la dimensione quantitativa del fenomeno nell’area euromediterranea; il terzo, attraverso un caso studio registrato a Palermo, analizza alcuni aspetti simbolico-culturali che influenzano l’interazione dei crocieristi con la destinazione.

The cruise industry worldwide has increased rapidly since the beginning of the millennium. Hawaii is no exception to this. Since the 1970s, cruise ships periodically visited the Hawaiian Islands, yet overnight cruising among the islands was rare. From 2001 to 2004, cruise ships sailing to and around Hawaii were solely foreign-flagged ships, including those home based in Hawaii. This meant much of the tourism revenue and taxes did not accrue to the local economy. Since July 2004, in addition to the foreign-flagged ships, a U.S.-flagged ship has been home-ported in the islands, paying Hawaii taxes and hiring U.S. crews with two more U.S.-flagged ships being added to the fleet in 2005 and 2006. This article uses a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to estimate the economywide economic impact of the cruise industry on the state of Hawaii. Using the 2002 intercounty input-output table as a benchmark, the multiregion CGE model takes the direct expenditure estimates of cruise passengers, expenditure by cruise crews, and the direct expenditures by the cruise lines, as computed by the State of Hawaii and uses these direct impacts as simulations in the CGE model. Gross value added and welfare are calculated for each county and the state as a whole. Some regions benefit more than others.

Corporate philanthropy (CP) describes the voluntary action of a company to donate time and/or financial resources to a societal cause.  Originally aligned with altruistic intention, CP is increasingly used to deflect criticism away from industries with reputations for poor environmental, social, or economic management. The cruise sector’s policies on human resources, environmental management, and taxation, and their use of private enclave resorts as ports of call in the Caribbean are considered by many stakeholders to be financially and socially exclusionary. To mitigate such censure, and to support claims for good corporate citizenship, cruise firms are increasingly embracing philanthropic projects. Royal Caribbean International (RCI) has funded a school in Haiti since 2010. Acknowledging the complexity of the Haiti’s economic, social and political context, and the challenges associated with unpicking corporate intention, this paper draws on legitimacy theory to interpret RCI’s school project in Haiti. The paper argues RCI’s financial support of the school is designed to confer social legitimacy on its operations in Haiti. The paper concludes with recommendations for RCI to significantly amend its business model away from the use of enclave resorts.

Στην εποχή μας η κρουαζιέρα έχει καταστεί σημαντικός τομέας του θαλάσσιου τουρισμού που προσελκύει πλήθος επιβατών, όχι μόνο υψηλού αλλά και μέσου οικονομικού επιπέδου.

Cruising has become one of the popular trends in tourism. Each year large cruise ships are built to meet the increasing demand for cruising. Cruise industry is like any other sector of tourism, uses resources and generates wastes which lead to environmental, social and cultural costs and benefits. During the early days of cruising, no one paid much attention to the damages which were caused by cruise ships. With the increase in awareness, the concerned stakeholders formulated new plans and policies which focused on reducing the negative impacts caused by the cruise ships. The objective of this research is to showcase the innovative sustainable practices adopted by the cruise companies to reduce or prevent the negative impacts caused to the environment, culture and the destinations where the cruises dock. The data for study has been taken from secondary sources such as journals, magazines and the Internet. The data focused on the mitigation measures currently in use by the cruise lines and the innovative programs they have launched to go beyond just conservation. The data was analyzed in detail and the relevant points were taken down. After analyzing the data in detail, the findings indicated that the cruise industry has adopted several programs aimed at environmental conservation, Socio-cultural growth and environmental and climatic research. Competition with other cruise lines has also been a motivation factor for them to launch such programs. The industry has partnered with environment groups and research organizations for further development and innovation of sustainable conservation strategies. They have developed new policies which focus on saving energy or utilizing energy more efficiently. With such conservation and mitigation measures, the cruise industry is set to go greener than before and head towards a brighter future.

Pariwisata merupakan salah satu industri yang cukup berkembang pada saat ini. Pariwisata bukan dinilai sebagai sebuah kegiatan saja namun pariwisata juga dinilai sebagai sebuah industri yang memiliki peluang yang besar karena dirasa dapat memberikan dampak positif yang cukup besar bagi semua orang yang terlibat didalamnya. The Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic is a global public health emergency that Dropped Physician Recruitment by 30% in the US (Terry, 2020). The available data show that the pandemic resulted in a significant staff shortage in hospitals, as 18% of health care workers have quit their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic, while another 12% have been laid off. Among health care workers who have kept their jobs during the pandemic, 31% have considered leaving (Galvin, 2021). In March 2020 the Italian government established the Special Continuity Care Units (USCA) (Lippi, 2021) to perform mass vaccinations at special hubs. The opportunity to enlist Doctors willing to embark on the role of ship doctors in Italy is historically limited due to the complex, expensive, and time consuming procedures imposed by the never updated Royal Decree of 1897

This article examines the growth of Community-Based Tourism within the broader discipline of tourism. New topics in the field have emerged such as responsible tourism, pro-poor tourism, sports tourism and moral impacts of tourism. This phenomenon also reflects the multi-disciplinarity of tourism. In this article, using the Title, Abstract and Keywords (TAK) for instances in which the words (Community-based Tourism, Community Tourism and Community-Based Eco-Tourism) to subsume Community-Based Tourism (CBT), a search was made in various databases and found that CBT as a sub-specialty of tourism started to emerge in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The number of articles published specifically on CBT has been growing phenomenally. The major contribution of this article is that we now know the evolution of CBT and we also now know its trajectory of growth which has been upward. While the number of articles on CBT is growing, there is no journal dedicated solely to CBT.
