Η μελέτη αυτή εκπονήθηκε το 2020 από επιστημονική ομάδα εργασίας  στα πλαίσια των ερευνών του Εργαστηρίου Αστικού Περιβάλλοντος ΕΜΠ, με τους Νίκο Μπελαβίλα καθηγητή πολεοδομίας,  Βίκυ Μάντζα, ναυπηγό, MSc ναυτιλιακών σπουδών, Πολίνα Πρέντου, MSc πολεοδόμο, ΥΔ ΕΜΠ και τη συμβολή επιστημόνων από τον χώρο της πολεοδομίας-χωροταξίας, της ναυτιλίας και της οικονομίας . Έχει ως στόχο να απαντήσει στο ερώτημα εάν το έργο της επέκτασης του λιμένα κρουαζιέρας στον Πειραιά μπορεί να αποδώσει σημαντικά οικονομικά οφέλη στην πόλη του Πειραιά, ποια είναι αυτά, για ποιον, και υπό ποιες προϋποθέσεις μπορούν να επιτευχθούν σε μια σταθερή και μόνιμη βάση. Εκτός από τις οικονομικές παραμέτρους, η κρουαζιέρα στον Πειραιά και κυρίως η σε εξέλιξη χωρική επέκτασή της στο λιμάνι, έχει εξίσου σημαντικές περιβαλλοντικές διαστάσεις. Αυτές έχουν παρουσιαστεί εκτενώς στις επάλληλες εκθέσεις του Εργαστηρίου Αστικού Περιβάλλοντος  και τα σχετικά στοιχεία, τα οποία δεν μπορούν παρά να συνυπολογιστούν ως προς το κόστος και το όφελος, επισημαίνονται επιγραμματικά σε σημεία της μελέτης. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, παρουσιάζονται εισαγωγικά η γεωγραφία του κλάδου κρουαζιέρας, πληροφορίες που εξηγούν την επί σειρά ετών συνεχόμενη ανάπτυξή του, καθώς και οι οικονομικές ωφέλειες από τη δραστηριότητα κρουαζιέρας στην Ευρώπη προκειμένου να δοθεί τεκμηριωμένα η εικόνα της τάξης των μεγεθών τους. Στη συνέχεια, περιγράφονται οι λόγοι για τους οποίους ένα λιμάνι πετυχαίνει ή όχι να λειτουργεί ως homeport, όπως και οι παράμετροι από τις οποίες εξαρτάται η επιτυχία αυτής της προσπάθειας. Προκειμένου να εντοπιστεί η θέση του λιμανιού του Πειραιά σε σχέση με τον ανταγωνισμό, περιγράφονται τα μεγέθη τα οποία αφορούν στη Μεσόγειο και τα μεγαλύτερα homeport λιμάνια της. Γίνεται αποτύπωση της οικονομικής συνεισφοράς της κρουαζιέρας στην Ελλάδα και τον Πειραιά και βάσει των αποτελεσμάτων, εκτίμηση για την ενίσχυση της ωφέλειας για την πόλη του Πειραιά μέσω της επιδιωκόμενης αύξησης της δραστηριότητας homeporting. Στο τελευταίο μέρος παρουσιάζεται το ιστορικό της ανάπτυξης των έργων κρουαζιέρας, το θεσμικό πλαίσιο χωρικού σχεδιασμού στο οποίο εντάσσονται, καθώς και τα κρίσιμα περιβαλλοντικά ζητήματα που σχετίζονται τόσο με τα έργα όσο και με τη συγκεκριμένη λειτουργία. Το κείμενο ολοκληρώνεται με την τελική αποτίμηση του επιχειρησιακού στόχου της επέκτασης του λιμένα κρουαζιέρας στον Πειραιά.

Το ερευνητικό πρόγραμμα «Προσφυγικές γειτονιές του Πειραιά: Από την ανάδυση στην ανάδειξη της ιστορικής μνήμης» υλοποιήθηκε από το Ινστιτούτο Ιστορικών Ερευνών του Εθνικού Ιδρύματος Ερευνών και το Εργαστήριo Αστικού Περιβάλλοντος της Σχολής Αρχιτεκτόνων Μηχανικών του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου και χρηματοδοτήθηκε από την Περιφέρεια Αττικής. Πραγματοποιήθηκε το χρονικό διάστημα Ιανουάριος 2017-Απρίλιος 2018. Το ερευνητικό πρόγραμμα "Ανώνυμη Εταιρεία Χημικών Προϊόντων και Λιπασμάτων-Παρελθόν και Μέλλον ενός Βιομηχανικού Συγκροτήματος", ανατέθηκε από το Ίδρυμα Μποδοσάκη στο Εργαστήριο Αστικού Περιβάλλοντος του Τμήματος Αρχιτεκτόνων ΕΜΠ τον Μάρτιο του 1999.

The famous Greek geographer Strabo wrote in the fi rst century A.D., that Piraeus was formerly an island and lay ‘over against’ the mainland, from which it got its name. To validate Strabo’s hypothesis, cartographic and historical data were compiled with multiproxy paleoenvironmental analyses and radiocarbon dating from a series of boreholes drilled in
the Cephissus coastal plain, southwest of Athens, Greece. The results of this interdisciplinary geoarchaeological research demonstrate the reliability of Strabo’s text by revealing that
Piraeus was indeed an island. In early Holocene time, the rocky hill of Piraeus was linked to the mainland of Attica. During the late to fi nal Neolithic Period (4850–3450 B.C.), Piraeus became an island in a shallow marine bay, due to sea-level rise in the Holocene. Between 2850 and 1550 B.C., in the Early and Middle Bronze Age, Piraeus was separated from the mainland by a wide lagoon. In the fi fth century B.C., Themistocles, Cimon, and then Pericles connected Athens to Piraeus by building two “long walls” partly built on a residual coastal marsh called the Halipedon. This study reveals an impressive example of past landscape evolution.

Following recent changes to its management status, the port of Piraeus finds itself in transition, as increasing securitisation and narrative twists become evident, under the pretext of efficiency optimisation. Being interested in the human experience of the harbour as a public space (and) transportation infrastructure, this paper focuses on the passenger port and the respective urban waterfront. A different perspective to approach the port is proposed, mapping both its structure mechanisms as an abstract infrastructural system and its attributes as an in-context cultural artefact. The research is conducted in two stages. During the first stage, a number of European ports are examined, producing comparative diagrams via satellite imagery; the emergence of specific patterns in terms of borders, buffer zones, terminal buildings and space structure, suggest the formulation of a dominant paradigm. In the second stage, having recognised the peculiarities of the Piraeus case, the work focuses on the passenger port. Conducting field work over a course of one year (2016-17), an extensive series of maps, diagrams, timelapses, and collages are produced to point to a certain latent potential of the port of Piraeus, evident in two axes: in the spatio-temporal response of the infrastructural space and in the port-city relations. Boundary porosity, flexibility of spatial adaption, agency, as well as informality appear as key concepts in both axes, while also being in a state of constant dialectical tension with precepts of efficiency. It is this play of balance that produces the fluid and diverse landscape of the port, distant from the prevailing understanding of hard infrastructures, but most importantly one that carries the potential of establishing a paradigm of its own. This counter-paradigm challenges the dominant understanding of infrastructures as detached spaces of overdetermined global protocols and brings out their balancing abilities in processes which include some degree of 'open-endedness' favouring the local, therefore proving their capability to function as active public spaces too.

Cruise is the most dynamic tourism sector that offers a variety of itineraries trough the use of different ports. The latter are categorised either as homeports, or as ports of call, or hybrid ports. Cruise ports aim to be selected as homeports, as in this case the ship spends more time in the terminal acting as income generator. The paper presents the output of an empirical research that aims to (a) identify the criteria on which the cruise companies decide to use a port as a homeport (b) and conclude on the prioritization of these criteria.
