Dalmatian History and Art

Na otoku Vrgadi u zadarskom arhipelagu nalazi se nekoliko značajnih građevina od kojih je najvažnija Gradina- kasnoantička utvrda s predromaničkom crkvom Sv. Andrije u njenom podnožju. U centru naselja nalaze se monumentalne ruševine baroknog ljetnikovca obitelji Damiani, vlasnika otoka, s obiteljskom kapelom.

Diese  Arbeit  präsentiert  eine  durch  interdisziplinären  Ansatz  (archäologische  Funde,  historische  Quellen, Überlieferung, archivalische Forschung, Stadtplanung, Onomastik, Religionswissenschaft ...) geprägte Übersicht der Distribution erkundeter und indizierter Amphitheater im Bereich der ostadriatischen Küste (Pola, Iader, Corinium, Burnum, Aequum, Tilurium, Salona, Epidaurum und Dyrrachium ). Auch römische Amphitheater werden durch das Prisma der Fragen, wie in etwa denen der Ortung, Datierung, Morphologie und Struktur der Amphitheater in den definierten Bereichen unter Wahrung ihrer individuellen Entwicklung und Spezifi tät bearbeitet. Angesichts der Stärke und Nachhaltigkeit eventueller Argumente und Indizien der Möglichkeit einer Existenzeiner einer solchen, zur Unterhaltung des römischen Volkes errichteten Einrichtung, kann man sagen, dass diese Arbeit die erste umfassende Untersuchung der römischen Amphitheater im Bereich der ostadriatischen Küste darstellt.



U ovom se radu interdisciplinarnim pristupom (arheološki nalazi, povijesni izvori, predaja, arhivska istraživanja, urbanizam, onomastika, religijska istraživanja...) daje prikaz distribucije istraženih i indiciranih građevina amfiteatara na prostoru istočnojadranske obale: Pola, Iader, Corinium, Burnum, Aequum, Tilurium, Salona, Epidaurum i Dyrrachium. Rimski se amfi teatri također obrađuju, i to kroz prizmu pitanja poput ubikacije, datacije, morfologije i organizacije građevina amfiteatara na definiranim prostorima, poštivajući pritom njihov zaseban razvoj i specifičnosti.

Razmatrajući jačinu i održivost možebitne argumentacije i indicija mogućnosti postojanja jedne takve građevine za zabavu
rimskog puka, može se reći da ovaj rad predstavlja prvu širu studiju rimskih amfiteatara na prostoru istočnojadranske obale.

Na području antičke luke u Zatonu kraj Nina pronađena je pri hidroarheološkim istraživanjima velika količina keramičkoga materijala, među kojim autor izdvaja i obrađuje dva zoomorfna reci-pijenta. Interdisciplinarnim radom autor nastoji objasniti simboliku ovdje obrađivanih zoomorfnih recipijenata. Komparativnim istraživanjima u vidu analogija upotpunjuje pregled i distribuciju ostalih zoomorfnih recipijenata maloazijske provenijencije pronađenih na prostoru antičke Liburnije. Također će u radu po prvi put biti naznačene poneke poje-dinosti izrazito dokumentacijske i tehničke naravi ovdje obrađi-vanih zoomorfnih recipijenata, poput dodjeljivanja inventarnoga broja, obrade arheološkoga materijala, kolorita i tonaliteta boje, dimenzija, zapremnine i drugih odrednica.

From  the  large  quantity  of  pottery  found  during  the  hydroar-
chaeological research in the ancient port of Zaton near Nin, the
author  singles  out  and  discusses  here  two  zoomorphic  recep-
tacles. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the author endeav-
ors to explain the symbolism of the zoomorphic receptacles dis-
cussed here. In his comparative research, the author uses analo-
gies to complement the overview and distribution of the other
zoomorphic receptacles of the Asia Minor origin found on the
territory of the ancient Liburnia.
Also for the first time, the work provides details of how these
zoomorphic receptacles were documented (e.g. the way of as-
signing their inventory numbers) and some technical details (the
processing of the archaeological material, its colors and shades,
dimensions, capacity and other determinants).

This paper traces the emergence, appearance, and function of governmental palaces in Eastern Adriatic cities during the medieval period. The primary focus is on the chosen cities in present-day Croatia (from Pula in Istria to Dubrovnik in southern Dalmatia, including the cities of Rab, Zadar, Šibenik, Trogir, and Split), but also some other examples (from today’s Croatia and Slovenia). The paper follows the specific political constellations in which palaces were built – particularly the relationship between the communal and central authorities, which differed from one period and region to another. In the period that this paper focuses upon (13th – 15th c.), the Eastern Adriatic was an area of interest for various political entities: Venice, the Patriarch of Aquileia, the Hungarian kings who had inherited the Croatian throne, and the Croatian magnates. Palaces were seats of (more or less) autonomous communal governments or of those who represented the central authorities. They were also seats of the local city councils – with the representatives of urban nobility.

Ostrovičke predstavlja bogat kulturno-
povijesni  i  arheološki  lokalitet  na
prostoru  sjeverne  Dalmacije.  Od
pamtivijeka  je  prostor  Ostrovice
s v o j o m  m o n u m e n t a l n o š ć u  i 
gigantnošću  plijenio  pažnju  brojnih
prolaznika  i  putopisaca,  ljubitelja
starina, među njima i čuvenog Alberta
Fortisa,  koji  je  u  svom  putopisnom
djelu Put po Dalmaciji posvetio jedno
čitavo  poglavlje  prostoru  Ostrovice,  u
kojem  kaže: 

"Njezina  tvrđava,  koja  se
uzdizala na stijeni strmo odsječenoj sa
svih  strana,  s  pravom  se  morala
smatrati neosvojivom prije nego što se
raširila upotreba topništva. Osvojio ju je
Sulejman 1524., ali zatim je opet prešla
pod  sretnu  mletačku  vlast.  Sada  više
ne postoji nikakav trag utvrđenja: to je
samo gola i osamljena gomila."
 
Upravo  sa  spomenutog  položaja
utvrde  u  Ostrovici  potječe  markantan
kameni  spomenik  s  prikazom
povijesnog grba Dalmacije.

In the spring of 1583, Nicolò Cassich was killed in the field church in Murvica located in the vicinity of the town of Pag. Cassich had been banished in 1579 on the charge of having posted a libello famoso (defamatory leaflet) against a representative of Venice to the island. The investigation launched by the local authorities promptly revealed that the killing had been carried out by Zuanne Pastorcich, himself a bandit, who intended to avail himself of the benefits provided by law and request his release from the banishment penalty. To that end, Pastorcich presented the head of the bandit on the pietra del bando in the town square, so that it could be identified by some witnesses, who readily made themselves available. But as the authorities proceeded with such identification, a woman stepped out from the crowd that had flooded the square. She removed Cassich’s head from the stone and took it to the main church in town. The authorities’ efforts to recover it were futile, and the incident evinced that the killing of Nicolò Cassich in that small church had created a deep rift within the community. And although Pastorcich eventually obtained the bounty he had claimed, the killing was deemed a genuine desecration, and that sacred place was interdicted from divine worship for several years.

Nella primavera del 1583 Nicolò Cassich venne ucciso nella chiesa campestre di Murvica, posta nelle vicinanze della città di Pago. Il Cassich era stato bandito  nel 1579 con l’accusa di aver affisso un libello famoso contro il rappresentante veneziano dell’isola. Il processo avviato dalle autorità locali rivelò da subito che l’uccisione era avvenuta ad opera di Zuanne Pastorcich, pure bandito, il quale, avvalendosi dei benefici previsti dalle leggi, intendeva ottenere la propria liberazione.
A tal fine egli presentò la testa del bandito nella piazza della città, perché fosse identificata da alcuni testimoni, resisi presto disponibili. In realtà, mentre le autorità procedevano a tale riconoscimento, dalla folla accorsa numerosa in piazza, si staccò una donna, che sottrasse la testa del Cassich, portandola con sé sino alla chiesa principale della città. A nulla valsero i tentativi delle autorità di recuperarla, in quanto l’episodio dimostrò come l’uccisione di Nicolò Cassich in quella piccola chiesa avesse creato una forte spaccatura all’interno della comunità. E, nonostante il Pastorcich ottenesse infine i premi richiesti, l’uccisione venne considerata come una vera e propria profanazione; e quel luogo sacro fu interdetto per alcuni anni al culto divino.

У Задру је рођен знаменити српски књижевник и изданак великих српских благородних лоза, Владан У. Десница. На дан када Црква Православна прославља успомену на великога јеврејскога пророка, вођу, реформатора и књижевника, Мојсеја Боговидца (4. септембра 1905. – по старом календару), се зањихала колевка на обалама Јадрана, у дому чувенога господина Уроша В. Деснице. Родило се чадо, које ће много значити у оквирима свог народа, али и шире. Родио се достојни изданак сердарског, витешког и кнежевског рода Митровић–Јанковић–Деде–Десница.

The article is about the work of Joseph Hatzinger, son of builder Paul (Pál) Hatzinger from Székesfehérvár (Hungary), and Joseph’s sons Heinrich and Paul. Joseph worked in Osijek and in Slavonia in the second half of the 18th century. In the early 19th century, his older son Heinrich spent almost a decade as a professor at the Genie-Akademie (Military Academy of Engineering) in Vienna and designed two important Early Neoclassical churches at Terezin and Josefov fortresses in Bohemia. His younger son Paul, after a brief period as a lecturer at the Genie-Akademie, worked as an engineer in various parts of the Habsburg Monarchy during the first half of the 19th century, from Galicia, across Dalmatia, to Vienna and Lower Austria in the final phase of his career. Finally, his great-great-grandson Gusztáv Kasper, the grandson of Paul Hatzinger Jr, became a Hungarian railway engineer at the turn of the 20th century.

U prvom dijelu rada donosi se sinteza šibenskog opusa Nikole Ivanova, dopunjena novijim spoznajama i zapažanjima o našem najplodnijem renesansnom kiparu i arhitektu. Ističe se važnost njegovih šibenskih ostvarenja, s posebnim naglaskom na katedralu sv. Jakova, unutar njegova opusa ali i šire, u okvirima dalmatinske, pa i europske renesanse. Drugi dio donosi prijedloge za dvije nove atribucije: prva se odnosi na bogato renesansno ukrašenu oltarnu nišu koja se sve donedavno nalazila ispod mlađih slojeva baroknog oltara Gospe od Zdravlja ili sv. Kristofora, ugrađena u južni bočni zid katedrale. Prema raspoloživim podacima pokušava se rekonstruirati povijest kultova štovanih u kapeli kojoj niša pripada. Druga atribucija tiče se bočnog portala crkve sv. Dominika, koji se do prije stotinjak godina nalazio na glavnom pročelju srednjovjekovne crkve. Nacrt i arhitektonska koncepcija portala pripisuju se Nikoli Firentincu, a izvedba njegovoj radionici koja je tada u punom zamahu radila na katedrali. Analizom ornamentalnih motiva i rješenja specifičnih upravo za njegovo stvaralaštvo te komparacijom s ostalim djelima nastoji se unaprijediti poznavanje izvorišta iz kojih je crpio predloške za neke od svojih karakterističnih motiva na arhitektonskoj plastici.

A synthesis of Šibenik opus of Niccolò di Giovanni is presented in the first part of the paper, supple- mented with new knowledge and observations on our most prolific Renaissance sculptor and architect. The importance of his achievements in Šibenik, with a special emphasis on the cathedral of St. James, is highlighted within his opus. His work is also evaluated from a wider perspective, within the framework of the Dalmatian and even European Renaissance. The second part of the paper provides suggestions for two new attributions: the first one relates to the rich Renaissance-style decorated altar niche, which was, until recently, beneath the younger layers of the Baroque altar of Our Lady of Health or St. Christopher, built in the south side wall of the cathedral. The history of cults worshipped in the chapel to which the niche belongs is to be reconstructed according to available data. The second attribution concerns the lateral portal of the church of St. Dominic, which was located on the main facade of the medieval church until about a hundred years ago. The design and architectural concept of the portal are attributed to Niccolò di Giovanni, and the execution to his workshop, which was then in full swing at the cathedral. By analysing the ornamental motifs and solutions specific to his creativity and by comparing them to other works, we are trying to improve our knowledge of sources from which he has drawn patterns for some of his characteristic motifs on architectural decoration.

Općina Poličnik - kulturno-povijesni pregled

Općina Poličnik nalazi se u sjevernoj Dalmaciji, smještena u središnjoj zoni Ravnih kotara, u neposrednoj blizini grada Zadra. Predstavlja sastavni dio Zadarske županije i čine je sljedeća naselja: Briševo, Dračevac Ninski, Gornja Murvica, Gornji Poličnik, Lovinac, Murvica, Poličnik, Rupalj, Suhovare i Visočane.

Toponim „Poličnik“ potječe od srednjovjekovnog naselja i bivše župe Polisane, po svoj vjerojatnosti  romanskog podrijetla (od Polisanum / Polyxenum).  Ljudski život na ovim područjima potječe još iz starijeg kamenog doba, a osobito se može pratiti od ilirsko-liburnskih vremena. U srednjem vijeku pripada hrvatskoj župi Luka. Na području današnje općine Poličnik zabilježeno je nekoliko glagoljičnih spomenika (natpisi, spisi, knjige i drugo), osobito na prostoru Briševa, Grusa, Murvice i Visočana. Za vrijeme hrvatskih knezova i kraljeva utvrda je obnovljena, a za mletačke uprave bila je u posjedu zadarske plemenitaške obitelji de Pecchiari, nekoć Martinussi, koji su je držali do 1581. kada je zauzeše Turci. Pod Turcima je bila do 1647. godine, kada je Mlečani zauzeše i spališe zajedno sa selom ispod nje, da ne bi ponovo došla pod vlast Turaka. Nakon što je po završetku Kandijskog rata (1669.) nastupio mir, staro se kršćansko stanovništvo vraća i podiže svoju kapelu sv. Luke, koja je bila stara župna crkva, a uz novu, koju podižu u drugoj polovici 17. st. i posvećuju sv. Luki, za koju 1769. nabavljaju dio crkvenog namještaja u srebru od koludrica zadarskog samostana sv. Nikole.  Nekad značajno utvrđenje u sjevernoj Dalmaciji, poznato još u srednjem vijeku, mada često oštećivano i rušeno održalo se do naših dana. Međutim, o naselju koje se razvilo podno nje zna se vrlo malo.

Premda su općina i samo mjesto Poličnik nadomak Zadru, njihov povijesno-geografski razvoj tekao je u oskudnim gospodarskim i društvenim okolnostima. Stanovništvo se uglavnom zaokupljalo poljodjelstvom i stočarstvom kao glavnim izvorom uzdržavanja. Komunalna infrastruktura nije zadovoljavala ni minimalne potrebe stanovništva, a školu i poštu dobiva tek između dvaju svjetskih ratova. U vrijeme Domovinskog rata oslobođen je čitav prostor općine Poličnik u vojno-redarstvenoj akciji „Maslenica“ početkom 1993. godine, nagovještujući time ostvarenje povijesnih, kulturnih i drugih prava na vlastito samoodređenje i samosvojnost sveukupnog prostora Republike Hrvatske.

Općina Poličnik osnovana je 13. travnja 1993. godine, u sklopu upravno-teritorijalnog ustroja Republike Hrvatske i sve se brže razvija. Otkad je osnovana obnovilo se, uredilo i izgradilo te mnogo uložilo u infrastrukturu i izgled same općine.

Zastava općine Poličnik je jednobojna plave boje, dimenzija omjera dužine i širine; 2:1. U sredini zastave, na sjecištu dijagonala nalazi se grb općine obostrano, obrubljen zlatno/žutom trakom. Grb je smješten na  sjecištu dijagonala u sredini zastave. Grb je u polukružnom štitu u crvenom polju - srebrni bijeli pladanj sa zatvorenom knjigom i tri kugle povrh (1-2) koje u vidu atributa simboliziraju zaštitnike Poličnika: Sv. Ivan Krstitelj Glavosijek – pladanj, Sv. Luka - knjiga i Sv. Nikola tri kugle.

Na  prostoru današnje općine Lišane Ostrovičke nalazi  se  značajan  arheološki
lokalitet iz prapovijesnog razdoblja sa brojnim
gradinama  i  ostacima  liburnskog  naselja. 
Važan  aspekt  kulturne  baštine  također predstavljaju
antički spomenici poput numizmatičkih nalaza,
rimskih  arhitektonskih  elemenata  ili  pak
ostataka  villae  rusticae  u  zaseoku  Kusale
podno  Gradine  u  Ostrovici.  Nadalje,  postoji
čitav  niz  starohrvatskih,  predromaničkih  i
srednjovjekovnih  spomenika  od  iznimne
važnosti za prostor općine.  U tom kontekstu
znamenita  je  srednjovjekovna  tvrđava
Ostrovica, posjed Bribirskih knezova koji su
je 1347. godine zamijenili za utvrdu Zrin i od
tada  se  nazivaju  knezovi  Zrinski.  Iz
starohrvatskog  i  srednjovjekovnog  vremena
znamenite  su  i  nekropole  i  grobovi  sa
signifikantnom grobnom arhitekturom, u kojem
su  pronađeni  brojni  kosturi  sa  zanimljivim
artefaktima.  Područje  ostrovičke  Gradine
ujedno  predstavlja  lokaciju  najstarijeg
poznatog hrvatskog (dalmatinskog) grba s tri
okrunjene  lavlje  ili  leopardove  glave  iz
vremena  kralja  Ludovika  I.  Anžuvinca. 
Ostrovicu 1523. zauzimaju Turci.  Potpuno je
razorena u mletačko-turskim ratovima u XVII. st. 
Nakon tog vremena raste značenje Lišana
Ostrovičkih,  koji  postaju  važnije  naselje  od
obližnje  Ostrovice,  a  od  1735.  i  sjedište
katoličke župe.  Od 1828. prostor općine je u
sastavu Šibenske biskupije.

The "Croatian Maritime Regesta – the 18th Century" 3rd vol. are a valid source for History of Adriatic and different nation's travellers (Italians, Croats, Jews, Albanians, Greeks). They consist of 3 published volumes with 16.000 documents from different collections of the Archivio di Stato di Venezia, Archivio di Stato di Ancona and Archivio di Stato di Fano. They tell the story of the Venetian Republic at the 18th century Adriatic. The project of transcription and publication of the “Croatian Maritime Regesta of the 18th century” was started by late prof. Nikola Čolak in the 1956. The result of his 40 years in different archives of Italian and Croatian ports are 100.000 microfilmed documents. Focusing and mainly dealing with documents of maritime-commercial nature produced in the context of eastern-western 18th century Adriatic trade, Regesti marittimi croati is in fact a largely unexplored and for the time being also a mostly untapped source of information. Far from being completed, its current 16.000 documents represent only a portion of a numerically much bigger, thematically and geo-chronologically much wider mine of information.
Getting specific information from a general archive (as Regesti marittimi croati in fact are, in spite of their economic-trading focus) is an extremely taxing task. The degree of serendipity intrinsic to such type of research, however, can drastically be reduced by singling out from each document the most relevant metadata and crisscrossing the pieces of information they provide.

Projekt pronalaženja i publiciranja hrvatskih maritimnih dokumenata 18. stoljeća je izvorno osmislio i započeo pokojni prof. Nikola Čolak koji je za života objelodanio „Hrvatske pomorske regeste” sv. I. i II.
Radi se o pažljivo prikupljanim izvorima u hrvatskim i talijanskim arhivima u razdoblju od 40 godina, od 1953. do 1996. (do autorove smrti) i obuhvaća dokumente o pomorskom prometu tijekom 18. stoljeća između luka dviju jadranskih obala.
U prva dva sveska javnosti je predstavljeno oko 12.000 dokumenata iz Državnih arhiva Venecije, Fana i Ancone.
Treći svezak nastavlja započeti niz dokumenata, iznoseći daljnje dokumente iz Državnog arhiva u Veneciji (Archivio di Stato di Venezia), i Državnog arhiva u Anconi (Archivio di Stato di Ancona). I ovaj svezak, kao i prethodni, pruža zanimljive podatke o vrstama i imenima teretnih brodova, o imenima i porijeklu kapetana, brodovlasnika i mornara koji su njima plovili, o robi koju su prevozili, cijenama i porezima, ali i o osobama koje su njima putovale zbog posla, hodočašća ili drugih razloga, o rutama, dogodovštinama svakodnevnog života, sklapanju poslova, brodolomima, gusarstvima, pa čak i svađama.
Dokumenti se prenose u obliku regesta (dakle sažetog sadržaja), a njihov obujam (dakle daljnjih 4.000 dokumenata, što sveukupno s prethodno tiskanima u Padovi iznosi 16.000) omogućuje realniju sliku prometa između dviju obala u 18. stoljeću.
Urednica je Zrinka Podhraški Čizmek, doktorandica na Poslijediplomskom studiju povijesti Sveučilišta u Splitu, također Čolakova unuka.
U predgovoru ona predstavlja, iz jedne intimnije i obiteljske angolacije, pok. profesora Čolaka, njegov život i rad, sav posvećen hrvatskoj povijesti.
U knjizi se zatim predstavlja Popis prikazane građe (str. 25.) iz arhiva Venecije i Ancone.
Na str. 481. se nalazi Onomastički popis; na str. 629. Toponomastički popis, i na str. 647. Analitički popis. Zatim na str. 675 Pogovor te se na str. 679. nalazi Biografija – Životopis Nikole Čolaka (koju je on sam napisao još davne 1958. strojopisom), a na str. 683. In memoriam iz pera Lovorke Čoralić iz 1997. godine. Na str. 686. Popis slika; knjiga završava sa stranicom Sadržaja.
Treći svezak Hrvatskih pomorskih regesta, sa svojim 3927. dokumenata potvrđuje jake poveznice hrvatskog naroda s Europom, ne samo povijesno i kulturalno nego i ekonomski, baš zato što je živio i živi okrenut prema tom istom Jadranskom moru, koje je bilo poticaj, te ujedno cilj i put kojim je prolazila trgovina, razmjena i međusobni odnosi, kao što se vidi iz dokumentacije u obradi.
Nakana je da ovaj 3. svezak bude samo početak nastavljanja niza pomorskih regesta (ne samo 18. stoljeća), kojima je pok. Nikola Čolak započeo Codex Diplomaticus Maritimus Croatiae.

Nel primo volume dei Regesti Marittimi Croati si trovano 4.890 documenti raccolti negli Archivi di Stato di Venezia e di Fano, nel secondo pubblicato anch’esso a Padova 6.891 provenienti dagli Archivi di Stato di Venezia e di Ancona, ed infine nel terzo 3.927 unità dagli ultimi due archivi. Tutti e tre i volumi sono accompagnati da indici onomastici, toponomastici ed analitici. I documenti sono presentati in forma di regesti dato che Čolak si è deciso, giustamente, per il criterio secondo il quale, visto il gran numero di documenti che compaiono dal XVI secolo in poi, essi debbano essere pubblicati solo in forma sintetica. I regesti a loro volta devono essere direzionali e completi, ed in tale forma da fornire un’informazione completa affinché i ricercatori non debbano essere costretti a seguire nuovamente lo stesso percorso indicato dalle annotazioni sulle fonti.
Una volta che saranno pubblicati tutti i volumi ed avremo digitalizzata davanti agli occhi tutta la nostra flotta navale del XVIII secolo: le navi, i marinai e le merci, allora, in accordo con il grande Fernand Braudel, avremo raggiunto la massima perfezione che la storia sia in grado di fornirci; e talvolta, nei momenti di ispirazione, come d’incanto potremo entrare in quel tempo e spazio, e vedere dinanzi a noi ogni nave e persona nella sua navigazione quotidiana per l’Adriatico. Per una tale impresa anche al giorno d’oggi, pure gli stati moderni con centinaia di ricercatori e generosi fondi monetari, avrebbero bisogno di molti sforzi e tempo, mentre grazie all'eredità lasciata da Čolak, lo Stato croato ha ricevuto tutta la storia marittima di un suo secolo, e cosa più importante, nel periodo in cui i Veneziani avevano finalmente ceduto e lasciato il commercio adriatico ai Dalmati, non potendoli più ostacolare con varie leggi navigatorie a favore della propria marineria. La crescita economica della Dalmazia nel XVIII secolo si basava proprio sul commercio marittimo e la viticoltura ambo redditizi, fungendo da collegamento tra i territori periadriatici e la penisola appenninica. La libera esportazione dell’esubero di vino dalmata aveva favorito la marineria dalmata, i suoi porti e lazzaretti. La crisi delle rotte oltreadriatiche veneziane aveva ulteriormente incentivato l’apertura delle comunicazioni commerciali adriatiche in cui si erano inseriti i mercanti dalmati con le proprie eccedenze. Nel 1771 la regione che possedeva 378 grandi velieri e 2.148 navigli più piccoli aveva rilevato la maggior parte della redditizia navigazione costiera nell’Adriatico. Gli alti prezzi dei noli che rendevano fino a 200 zecchini per viaggio verso Venezia, avevano contribuito a sviluppare il commercio marittimo delle isole dalmate e dei comuni del Litorale. In base ai regesti collezionati un giorno saremo in grado di ricostruire la vita di ciascuna nostra nave dalla sua prima navigazione fino all’ultima, ed è qualcosa di cui non si può vantare nessun popolo marittimo al mondo, neppure le grandi potenze marine. 
Per questo sforzo di un’intera vita bisognava possedere tutte le qualità di uno storico collezionista: l’integrità, l’erudizione e la conoscenza, cui il prof. Čolak ha aggiunto anche un amore pronunciato verso la Patria. Nel suo lavoro è contenuto del tutto il nostro ideale storico legato all’Adriatico, questo nostro mare che, come egli ha sottolineato, ci rende l’unico popolo marittimo, in pieno senso, all’interno della grande famiglia dei popoli slavi.
Il prof. Čolak ha avuto la fortuna di aver trovato, all’interno della sua famiglia, in sua nipote Zrinka la continuatrice della sua opera. Tuttavia ella in futuro non può fare tutto da sola. Oltre alle citate circa 16.000 unità finora stampate in tre volumi, nel suo archivio, ora conservato nell'Archivio di Stato Croato a Zagabria, aspettano ancora altre circa 30.000 unità regestate da sistematizzare, ed ancora altri circa 70.000 documenti originali microfilmati e fotocopiati. Questo tesoro giace ora sulle spalle di sua nipote e sulla nostra coscienza. Una volta pubblicato per intero la Croazia diverrà simbolicamente quello stato marittimo forte dell’Adriatico che è in realtà.

The book Discovering Dalmatia: Dalmatia in Travelogues, Images, and Photographs, edited by Katrina O’Loughlin, Ana
Šverko, and Elke Katharina Wittich, brings twelve studies focusing on the image of Dalmatia in different travelogues,
photographs, and illustrations.

During the second half of the 18th century Venice was bombarded by petitions in which the Venetian public
administrators, camerlenghi and castellani of Dalmatian cities pleaded for the restoration of their palaces. The residences of the Venetian administrators in Dalmatia were in decline, but as their petitions often remained unanswered, the Rectors moved into private mansions for which they paid rent. The rent money was reim bursed by the State only after the state engineer had written a report and the cost estimate of the repairs. In the last two decades of the 18th century, Venice often sent requests to its engineers to make estimates of the value of these palaces along with the cost estimate for the repairs. Owing to the derelict condition of many of these buildings, the cost of necessary repairs was often higher than their actual value. This was the case with the Rector’s Palace in Šibenik. This text offers an analysis of numerous as yet unpublished documents
from the Archives of the Republic in Venice, which reveal the vicissitudes of the rectors’ palace in Šibenik in the second half of the 18th century. One of them is the report of the engineer Francesco Cicavo made in 1784, after he visited the building, and the report of the engineer Frano Zavoreo made in 1788, which includes his project of the palace’s conversion to another purpose along with the drawings of the building he made during his visit. //
Tijekom druge polovine 18. stoljeća u Veneciju počinju sve češće pristizati molbe dalmatinskih gradskih knezova, kamerlenga i kaštelana za obnovom njihovih rezidencija. Rezidencije državnih predstavnika u gradovima na obali pomalo su propadale, dok su javni dužnosnici, nakon bezuspješnih molbi za njihovu obnovu, stanovali u privatnim palačama za koje su plaćali najamninu.
Novac za najamninu država je isplaćivala tek nakon što je državni inženjer sastavio izvještaj i troškovnik potrebnih radova za obnovu rezidencije. Često je tijekom zadnjih dvaju desetljeća 18. stoljeća od organa vlasti u Veneciji dolazila naredba da inženjer koji je sastavljao troškovnik obnove, istodobno sastavi procjenu vrijednosti građevine. S obzirom na razmjere oštećenja na rezidencijalnim građevinama, događalo se da su iznosi novca potrebnog za njihovu obnovu često nadmašivali tržišnu vrijednost samog objekta. Takav je slučaj bio i s kneževom palačom u Šibeniku. U tekstu će se pobliže analizirati dosada neobjavljenji brojni dokumenti iz Arhiva Mletačke Republike u Veneciji koji prate sudbinu kneževe palače kroz drugu polovinu 18. stojeća. Između ostalog donosi se izvještaj inženjera Francesca Cicava sastavljen 1784. godine nakon pregleda kneževe palače u Šibeniku te izvještaj inženjera Frane Zavorea iz 1788. godine koji sadrži projekt prenamjene palače te crteže palače koji su tom prilikom nastali.

Iznose se nepoznati podaci o djelovanju splitskoga graditelja Marina Marasovića, njegovu školovanju i graditeljskom radu na brojnim značajnim objektima u Splitu i Dalmaciji te suradnja s kiparom Ivanom Meštrovićem i arhitektom Fabjanom Kaliternom od dvadesetih do šezdesetih godina 20. stoljeća./This paper reveals so far unknown facts about Marin Marasović's building activities, education and work on many significant buildings in Split and Dalmatia. It also presents Marasović's professional cooperation with sculptor Ivan Meštrović and architect Fabijan Kaliterna, in the period 1920-1960.

U tekstu su analizirani objavljeni rezultati nedavnih iskapanja starokršćanskoga bazilikalnog kompleksa i ranosrednjovjekovnih grobova u tumulima kod Ljupča pored Nina. Originalna interpretacija pripisuje uništenje kompleksa i ranosrednjovjekovne grobove doseljenim Slavenima. Analizirajući postojeće informacije u širem kontekstu, tekst nudi alternativnu interpretaciju nalaza, kojom se ukazuje na metodološke probleme s kojima se često u hrvatskoj arheologiji susreću pokušaji identificiranja ranosrednjovjekovnih Slavena u Dalmaciji.

In this paper are analysed published results of recent excavations of early Christian complex and early medieval graves in burial mounds in the area of Ljubač near Nin. The original interpretation ascribed the destruction of the early Christian basilical complex and the appearance of early medieval graves to recently migrated Slavic groups. By analysing the existing information in a wider context, this paper offers alternative interpretation of the finds, discussing methodological problems encountered by the Croatian archaeologists attempting to identify early medieval Slavs in Dalmatia.

The conservation-restoration programme of the Croatian Conservation Institute and the Ministry of Culture that from 2014 to 2018 focused on the monumental Romanesque wooden doors of Split Cathedral developed into a multidisciplinary programme that opened the door into the almost unknown technical world of wood sculpture and art of 13th century Split. In addition to the design and construction process, the selection of wood, the techniques and the tools for its working, the production processes, the materials and techniques for the painting and gilding of the doors in the context of similar works of wooden sculpture and painting of the time are also presented. The paper gives a survey of research findings in conjunction with a virtual reconstruction of the original appearance of the doors.

Arhitektura amfiteatara u rimskim kolonijama i vojnim logorima na području
istočnojadranske obale

Na području istočnojadranske obale i zaobalja predstoji čitav niz istraženih i indiciranih amfi-
teatara raspoređenih u pojedinim kolonijama (Pola, Iader, Aequum, Salona, Epidaurum i Dyrrachium) i vojnim logorima (Burnum i Tilurium). Topografskom i kronološkom klasifikacijom autor istražuje dotične rimske amfiteatre, s posebnim osvrtom na njihovu (ranocarsku) pojavu i razvojne faze. Osobito će se kritičkim pristupom obrađivati skupina tzv. indiciranih amfiteatara i pritom će se istaknuti mogućnost njihovog postojanja u definiranim prostornim i vremenskim okvirima. Interdisciplinarnim pristupom autor potkrepljuje svoje zaključke povijesnim izvorima, natpisnom građom, arheološkim ostacima, numizmatičkom građom, toponomastičkim survivalima, rekonstrukcijama, arhivskim, kartografskim i drugim vrstama podataka.

Architecture of the amphiteatres in Roman colonies and military camps along the
eastern Adriatic coast

A series of explored and indicated amphitheatres positioned in particilular colonies (Pola,
Iader, Aequum, Salona, Epidaurum and Dyrrachium) and military camps (Burnum and Tilurium) is
located in the area of latteral and coastal hinterland of the eastern Adriatic. The author explo-
res the Roman amphitheatres concerned by topographical and chronological classification,
with special reference to their (early imperial) emergence and developmental stages. Throu-
ghout the critical aporoach, a special consideration is given to the group of so-called indicated
amphitheatres; and the possibility of their existence in defined space-time framework is to be
highlited in this matter. Throughout the interdisciplinary approach, the author substantiates
the findings with historical sources, inscription material, archaeological remains, numismatic
sources, toponomastic survivals, reconstructions, as well as archival, cartographic and other
types of data.

Questa ricerca vuole offrire alcuni dei risultati del progetto quadriennale Von Venedig zum Heiligen Land. Ausstattung und Wahrnehmung von Pilgerorten an der Mittelmeerküste (1300-1550) finanziato dal Fondo Nazionale Svizzero per la Ricerca Scientifica e attivo presso la Cattedra di Storia dell’arte medievale dell’Università di Friburgo (CH) e coordinato da Michele Bacci.

The sarcophagi of Brač-Salona type are among the most important Early Christian artefacts originating from the area of the Adriatic basin, i. e. from its eastern coast. Most of them were found in Dalmatia, mainly on the island of Brač (Brattia) as well as in the provincial capital Salona and its surroundings. They were also exported into Italy in large quantities (Ravenna, Puglia etc.). Although these sarcophagi were analysed several times, there are still many issues to be resolved, particularly when it comes to dating the group. After the seminal works by I. Fisković and N. Cambi, recently several findings relevant to the issue were published in Italy that went unnoticed. Conversely, some newly-found and important examples of Dalmatian provenance were also overlooked. This lecture enriches the catalogue of sarcophagi of Brač-Salona type with the addition of several new pieces. One of them (found at Treviso) also enables a discussion on the origin and dating of the whole group. Its contents – an Early Byzantine encolpium – is an important step towards specifying the chronology of Dalmatian sarcophagi. All of this allows for a more detailed chronology regarding their production and distribution of the entire group.

La mostra che presentava l'eredita architettonica della Dalmazia, aperta presso la Reale Accademia di San Luca a giugno 1943, rimane l'ultima iniziativa culturale a scopi propagandistici del regime fascista. La dettagliata analisi dei fondi relativi alla mostra presso l'Archivio storico dell'Accademia e la contestualizzazione di questo progetto espositivo all'interno della politica del regime, porta anche a inserirlo nel delineamento dell'approccio all'architettura storica degli architetti italiani e il dialogo tra le due storiografie.
Lo scopo principale della mostra era di familiarizzare il pubblico romano con la neoacquisita provincia d'oltremare adriatico, interpretandone il passato in chiave imperialistica, di appartenza alla cultura italiana. L'impresa ebbe come protagonisti l'allora presidente dell'Accademia di San Luca, Alberto Calza Bini, e lo stretto collaboratore di Gustavo Giovanoni, architetto e archeologo Bruno Maria Apollonij Ghetti, mentre per il suo ruolo operativo come soprintendente ai monumenti dalmati venne coinvolto Luigi Crema. Inoltre, furono realizzate anche una la campagna fotografica in collaborazione con l'Istituto Luce, mentre l'architetto napoletano Vittorio Amicarelli fece i rilievi architettonici di maggiori monumenti della regione.
Per la mostra e per il catalogo si scelse il criterio tipologico, con l'introduzione dello studio di caratteri urbani e l'accenno all'architettura barocca. Questo approccio, tipico della scuola romana di storia dell'architettura, si distinse dalle quintenssenzalmente amatoriali pubblicazioni degli iredentisti dalmati quali Tamaro e Dudan, o quelle divulgative di Amy Bernardi. Inoltre, nella prima fase delle preparazioni della mostra, tra 1941 e 1942, l'insistenza sui reperti antichi romani e sulla tradizione classica rivelava gli interessi dei cerchi professionali romani, mentre una maggior apertura all'eredita dell'epoca veneziana entra a far parte della mostra verso la sua finalizzazione in primavera 1943. Finalmente, la parabola della preparazione dell'esposizione segue anche quella dei rapporti tra l'Italia fascista e la Croazia di Ante Pavelić, esemplificatasi nella publicazione Italia e Croazia di Reale Accademia d'Italia del 1942, e l'avanzamento del movimento partigiano in Croazia e gli avvenimenti italiani dell'estate di 1943, particolarmente visibili nell'eco della mostra nella stampa del regime, dove viene considerata un tentativo contro „la barbarie panbolsevica slava“.

The Republic of Venice was obliged to finance and organize the construction of the Makarska Cathedral as well as of the bishops and clergy house, while engineers, acting as civil servants, were entrusted with formal realization of these objects.  Following these conclusions, the author publishes documents related to the construction of the Makarska Cathedral between 1697 and 1757, preserved in the archival fonds Senato, Proveditori di Terra e Mar of the Archives of the Republic of Venice.

In 1697 the bombardiere Giacomo di Varenne and master Jeronim developed a complete project for the construction of the cathedrals in Makarska and Skradin. This first project was realized only three years later with the construction of the foundations of the Makarska Cathedral at the insistence of the Proveditor General Alvise Mocenigo, but without the previous consent of the Venetian Senate. The construction did not reach a more advanced stage prior to the arrival of the engineer, Giuseppe D’Andre from Provence to Makarska in 1708. The 1727 report by the engineer Francesco Melchiori reveals that his projects for the completion of the Cathedral took into consideration symmetry and correct proportions of the building. Melchiori was also entrusted with the selection of the building material suppliers: stone, timber and metal products. In 1733 the construction supervision was taken over by Melchioris assistant, the engineer Bortolo Riviera, who in his re-port of 1757 mentions a »new project« adopted for the construction of the Makarska Cathedral with its plan changed from Latin cross to a single-nave church, which annulled the communication between the lateral chapels and the church nave. Through this intervention the Makarska Cathedral became similar in plan to the churches built contemporarily in Venice and the terraferma.
Three semicircular altar niches dominate the lateral interior walls of the Makarska Cathedral extending in full height to the cornice. The altar niches are separated by pairs of pilasters raised on high bases. This motif of double supports enclosing smaller niches derives .from the church II Redentore (1577 - 1592, Andrea Palladia), and is repeated in different variations in numerous Venetian Baroque churches. Unlike the 17th and 18th century churches in Venice, the supports in the Makarska Cathedral consist of two vertically mounted pilasters. The first, bigger order of pilasters is raised on high bases and reaches only the height of the arch springers of the niches, while the smaller pilasters extend to the final cornice. This type of architectural decoration with three arched openings on interior walls, flanked not by a giant order as is the case in Venetian Baroque churches, but by two pilaster orders - a smaller order in the arch zone surmounting the bigger order - is found in cathedrals in Makarska and Skradin, as well as in the Franciscan monastery church in Sinj, which together form a separate typological group.
By comparing the interior architectural decoration of the Church of St. Eustace in Dobrota (Boka kotorska) built according to the project of the engineer Bortolo Riviera, the author identifies the engineer Francesco Melchiori, recorded as the de-signer of the cathedrals in Makarska and Skradin, as the author of the interior design of both churches, inspired by the churches built in the same period in Venice and its hinterland.
The archival records published as an appendix to the present paper show that the creativity of the engineers entrusted with building projects was inhibited by the amount of financial resources which the Republic of Venice was willing to invest at the given moment, and the Makarska Cathedral is presented as a valid protagonist of Venetian 18th century church architecture.

The polyptych from the pre-Romanesque church of Our Lady by the Sea is dated to the 15th century and attributed to the circle of Dujam Vušković. Even though decontextualised, as is the rest of the inventory of the church, it tells us about the spatial, historical, artistic and technological context of its creation and duration as if it were still embedded in the high altar of the church inside the bevelled square apse for which it was made. The polyptych was removed from the altar in 1974 due to a number of factors that threatened it, and since then has become part of the permanent exhibition of the Collection of Ecclesiastical Art of St. Lawrence’s Cathedral, Trogir. Taking into account known sources, as well as discovering new ones, that mention the church and its inventory in relation to their properties today and focus on links to the polyptych and its historical modifications, we have discovered a large part of the historical context of its creation and duration. It now seems that, through every detail, it is still an integral part of the high-altar apse in the church. This is the only place it can reclaim the dignity and meaning given to it when it was made, and which survived during the long and turbulent history of the church and its inventory, first described in 1579, and today scattered in Čiovo’s churches and monasteries, as well as the cathedral. Nevertheless, the restoration of the church did not respect any historical layer, so the real spatial context of the inventory and the painting has been lost forever. The integrity of its interior is evoked in reverse: by analysing the traces on the polyptych and other sporadic, scattered clues that include the initial gathering of historical inventory records, finding and recording its condition today, and its imaginary contextualisation using photographs taken before the restoration. In this way we add the model of the reconstruction of the complete historical stages of the interior of one of the many medieval churches with a similar story, with this particularly important and famous little church as a place where legends, votive prayers and miraculous healings are interwoven. In particular, the art-history attribution of 1974 to a painter from the circle of Dujam Vušković is analysed in the context of recent discoveries, including the results of technical studies, with analogies with analysed artwork of the 15th century in Dalmatia, and which can be linked to this painting. Furthermore, an overview and critical review of the conservation carried out on the painting in the 20th century is presented, and the model and course of a completed five-year conservation-and-restoration project investigating the technique and reconstructing the original form and painted layer of the polyptych, a work of art of Croatian medieval painting with the most extensive damage to its structure and surface, is described.

The development of Ragusa was shaped by extreme events from the Middle Ages onwards. The fire of 1296 and earthquake of 1667 both triggered major expansion projects that defined the city as we know it day. More disasters were to follow in the Modern Age; yet Dubrovnik still ranks among the best-preserved historical cities on the Adriatic and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.

Ragusa first grew up on a rocky peninsula that was cut off from its hinterland to the north by a partially silted‐up bay. The settlement clustered around the Late Roman, or rather Byzantine, fortress slowly but surely laid claim to the whole promontory, before eventually spreading to the flatter terrain to the north.

A devastating fire in 1296 destroyed large parts of the city centre and almost all of its outer wards, which were built largely of wood. Guidelines for the city’s reconstruction were drawn up under Venetian suzerainty, even if the statutes of 1272 had already anticipated the incorporation of the northern wards and the need to regulate building practices there. New clauses were now added, the principal objective of which was a denser urban fabric and the controlled expansion of the city onto the sloping terrain on the far side of the bay. Streets were to be regularly spaced, the rows of houses standardized, and sewers installed between them.

A wide new thoroughfare called the Placa (Stradun) was laid where the bay itself had once been in the decades immediately following. Just before the port, the Placa intersected at a right angle with the older axis defined by the rector’s palace and the cathedral. The building of the church of St. Blaise and the municipal loggia at the junction of these two main axes and their paving to form a single contiguous space had the effect of upgrading the city’s central public space. The city itself then
erected standardized residential and commercial properties all along the Placa.

No fire prevention byelaws had been passed at the time of the great fire of 1296 and not until after the fire of 1370 was the use of wood to build houses prohibited, and the owners of existing wooden houses given until 1406 to tear them down.

The earthquakes of 1520 and 1639 were followed by the devastating quake of 6 April 1667, when a single violent tremor laid waste to large parts of the old town. Almost half the population perished either in that quake or in the blaze that 17 followed. While the cathedral, most churches and convents, as well as entire neighbourhoods were destroyed, the fortifications stood firm.

Much of the city as we know it today dates from the reconstruction work undertaken after 1667. The uniform façades of the Placa were modelled on the buildings erected by the city itself from 1561. Rebuilt according to plans by architects from Rome and Venice, the cathedral, the church of St. Blaise, the Jesuit church and the monumental staircase leading up to it endowed the city with several Baroque highlights embedded in a remodelled sequence of spaces. Thus what local poets had longed for after the disaster – that Dubrovnik might rise again like a phoenix from the ashes – became reality.

Na otoku Bapcu u Pašmanskom kanalu nalaze se ostatci utvrđenja koji su pripadali ljetnikovcu
obitelji de Soppe. Nastanak i razvoj gospodarsko-ladanjskog sklopa kuće koja se spominje krajem
15. stoljeća do izgradnje zidina i mlina na kraju 16. stoljeća posvjedočeni su s nekoliko povijesnih
dokumenata. Sačuvani ostatci arhitekture ljetnikovca se sastoje od zidom ograđenoga pravokutnog
prostora unutar kojeg se nalaze seoske kuće. Od zidina izgrađenih krajem 16. stoljeća najbolje je
sačuvan njihov jugozapadni dio s bastionom, te pročelje s ulaznim vratima i grbom obitelji de Soppe
renesansnih karakteristika. U blizini se nalazi crkva sv. Andrije, koja je, iako sagrađena ranije,
postala sastavni dio ladanjskog posjeda obitelji de Soppe čiji grb se nalazi uzidan i na pročelju crkve.
Cijeli građevni sklop je u vrijeme turskih provala služio kao povremeno pribježište stanovništvu s
kopna. Utvrđeni ljetnikovac na Bapcu, svojom izraženom obrambenom ulogom, predstavlja izniman
primjer ladanjske arhitekture 16. stoljeća na zadarskom otočju.

Remains of a fortifi cation which belonged to the summer house of the de Soppe
family are to be found on the island of Babac in the Pašman canal. The founding and the
development of the economic-vacationing complex of houses which is mentioned at the
end of the 15th century to the time of the construction of walls and a mill at the end of
the 16th century is confi rmed by a number of historical documents. The preserved remains
of the architecture of the summer house consist of a rectangular space encircled by a wall
within which are located village houses. Of the walls built at the end of the 16th century their
southwestern part with a bastion and the facade of the entrance gate with a coat-of-arms of
the de Soppe family done in the Renaissance manner are the items best preserved. The nearby
church of St. Andrews, although erected at an earlier date, became a constitutive part of the
summer residence of the de Soppe family. The family’s coat-of-arms was built into the wall
on the facade of the church. During the period of Turkish incursions the entire complex of
buildings served as a temporary shelter for refugees from the shore. The fortifi ed summer
house on Babac with its emphatic defensive role represents an exceptional example of 16th
century residential architecture on the Zadar islands.

U tekstu se daje analiza arhivskih dokumenata iz 16. i 18. stoljeća, koji govore o paškoj Kneževoj palači. Dokumenti su sačuvani u zadarskom i venecijanskom  arhivu, a među njima se izdvajaju nacrti i opis stanja palače iz 1764. godine. Premda potječu iz kasnog razdoblja mletačke uprave, ti su arhivski izvori najstariji sačuvani zapisi takve vrste za pašku kneževu palaču. Podaci koji se iz njih mogu iščitati važni su za poznavanje prostornog rasporeda prije zahvata koji su slijedili u 19. stoljeću, ali vrlo vjerojatno i za bolje prepoznavanje izvornog izgleda palače.

This paper deals with a portal built into a part of one  rural house in the village of Preko (island Ugljan, Croatia). This present day  doorway is in fact constructed from elements of 2 or maybe 3 different portals, with one stone element carrying an aristocratic emblem.  Stone blocks were most probably brought to the present location from one or several destroyed palaces in Zadar proper, or alternatively, from some aristocratic mansion on the island itself. The rest of the article deals with problems of datation, typology, original finding spot, detection of spolia in nearby architecture  ect.

U radu su prikazani rezultati istraživanja kneževih palača Cresa, Krka, Raba, Paga, Šibenika, Zadra, Splita, Trogira, Hvara i
Korčule – gradskih središta u vrijeme mletačke uprave u Dalmaciji. Analiza prostornog rasporeda, tlocrtne sheme i vertikalne podjele unutar građevine, kao i oblikovanja pročelja pokazala je da se u slučaju ove vrste građevina susrećemo s nizom uzora. Te palače nastaju kombiniranjem postojećih modela privatne izgradnje, s određenim modifikacijama s obzirom na funkcije. U njihovu oblikovanju jasno je vidljiva želja za pokazivanjem i izražavanjem mogućnosti i snage predstavnika mletačke uprave. Općenito govoreći, proizlazi da je tijekom 15. i 16. stoljeća prevladavalo uređenje postojećih srednjovjekovnih kneževih palača, ali i određen broj njihovih novih gradnji. U kasnijem razdoblju mletačke uprave u Dalmaciji, u 17. i 18. stoljeću, te se palače samo održavaju i
pregrađuju.

Sagledavajući razvitak nacionalnih povijesnih disciplina od njihova znanstvenog ustrojenja i institucionalizacije tijekom 19. st. pa do suvremenosti, prva stoljeća srednjovjekovlja (7. i 8.) nameću se unutar te slike kao upadljiva lakuna u hrvatskoj povijesti umjetnosti i arheologiji starijega doba. U tom kontekstu je znatna pojava nekolicine studija iz pera povjesničara umjetnosti i konzervatora Ljube Karamana (1886.-1971.) posvećenih upravo problemima »prijelaznog razdoblja«, objavljenih u kronološkom rasponu od početka 1920-ih do konca 1950-ih godina. Pionirska Karamanova uloga u konstituiranju proučavanja predromaničkog razdoblja kao samosvojnog polja istraživanja unutar nacionalne povijesti umjetnosti i arheologije, kao i prve sinteze posvećene razvoju domaćeg umjetničkog stvaralaštva (1930., 1933., 1952., 1963.) plastično ocrtavaju dosege jednog od utemeljitelja suvremene povijesti umjetnosti, dok istovremena njegova preokupacija problematičnim »prijelaznim« periodima i »spomenicima nepotpune biografije« svakako i u metodološkom pogledu uzdiže vrijednost navedenih studija. Karaman se tijekom gotovo čitave svoje znanstvene karijere osvrtao na spomenike »međurazdoblja«, u raznim prilikama, bilo da je obrađivao pojedinačne spomeničke jedinice, unutar sintetskih tekstova, ili osvrćući se na mišljenja drugih istraživača. U pionirskoj studiji o počecima srednjovjekovnog Splita (1940.) prvi put je, primjerice, pokušao dati zaokruženu sliku razvoja nekadašnje Dioklecijanove palače u njenim inicijalnim stoljećima. Poglavito se razmatra Karamanov doprinos u studiji »O spomenicima VII i VIII stoljeća u Dalmaciji i o pokrštenju Hrvata« (1942.), u kojoj je dao pregled svih do tada registriranih spomeničkih jedinica datiranih u to vrijeme. Prvi je uspostavio facies umjetnosti – dakako na razini svoga vremena – 7. i 8. st., pretežito na polju skulpture. Mada je zbog nedostatka suvislijih materijalnih tragova svaki pokušaj ocrtavanja tog razvoja na razini davnašnjih spoznaja nužno pars pro toto, Karamanova rekapitulacija i rekontekstualizacija rezultirala je nizom izuzetno korisnih opažanja. U radu je posvećena pažnja nekima od njih, poput: periodizacije pleterne plastike, njena porijekla i geneze, kronologije proučavanja najranijih manifestacija pleterne skulpture Apeninskog poluotoka.

The document on the division of the Nassis house in 1488 is important for the fact that the house it refers to has remained preserved in the city’s texture. Thus, it is possible to compare the former situation to the present one and enrich our knowledge of Zadar’s residential architecture in the past. The Nassis house is a typical small patrician palace that changed its appearance in the last quarter of the 15th and the early 16th century by combining elements of an older Romanesque building with new sculptural decoration on the façade and a renovated courtyard. By analysing an archival document on the division of the house, written on September 1, 1488, it has been established that the said renovation had largely been completed by the time of its compilation. Chapt. 4 contains an analysis of the architectural elements found in the area of block 140. In particular, torsade molding and denticulated cornices, brackets, fluted cornices, elements from double and triple lancet windows; these were mass produced objects which are characteristic of a specific residential type which was developed in the second half of the 15th century. After analyzing the construction techniques, we attempted to formulate a preliminary typological chronology. On the basis of the distribution analysis inside of the city we created a preliminary map which revealed that the buildings that included these elements represented a minority with respect to all the other buildings. These kinds of architectural elements, infact, can be found almost everywhere in the territories which where dominated by Venetians but which originated in the civil and ecclesistical architecture whic developed in Venice durinig the first half of the XV century. On the basis of the written documents we have concerning local craftsmen working along the Dalmatian coast starting in the Late Middle Ages, we can attribute architectural elements of this type to these workshops. The fact that they were mass produced would also imply that they were not very expensive.

U članku je provedena stilska i ikonografska analiza konzole s prikazom lava koja je kao spolij bila ugrađena na zabatu kuće Mangjer u Splitu. Kuća se nalazila na križanju Manđerove i Bribirske ulice. Nakon njezina rušenja, konzola je prenesena u Samostan sestara milosrdnica svetog Vinka Paulskog u Splitu, gdje se i danas čuva. Izvorni arhitektonski kontekst konzole nije poznat. Tipski i stilski srodan joj je par konzola na portalu crkve svetog Mikule (sv. Nikole) u Velom Varošu u Splitu. Autorica ih grupira u krug iste ranoromaničke radionice koja je djelovala koncem 11. i početkom 12. stoljeća. Konzola s kuće Mangjer nastaje nedugo nakon para konzola sa Svetog Mikule. Izradio ju je majstor koji dobro poznaje potonje konzole, vješto kopira njihovu kompoziciju i dimenzije. U oblikovanju zahtjevnijih dijelova (poput lavlje glave ili akantusova lista na konzolici pod lavljom figurom) otkriva nešto slabiji oblikovni kapacitet u odnosu na predložak.
In this paper, the stylistic and iconographic analysis of a console with a depiction of a lion, which was installed as spolia on the gable of the Mangjer house in Split, was performed. The house was situated at the intersection of Manđerova Street and Bribirska Street. After its demolition, the console was transferred to the Monastery of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Split, where it is still kept today. The
original architectural context of the console is unknown. In terms of type and style, this console is similar to a couple of consoles on the portal of the Church of St. Mikula (St. Nicholas) in Veli Varoš, Split. The author groups them within the same early Romanesque workshop circle which operated in the late 11th and early 12th centuries. The console from the Mangjer house was created shortly after the abovementioned consoles from Saint Mikula. It was made by a master craftsman who had good
knowledge of the latter consoles, skilfully copying their composition and dimensions. The design of more complex parts (such as the lion’s head or the acanthus leaf on a small console under the lion’s figure), when compared to the original template, reveals a lesser design capacity.

Sarà il viaggio in Dalmazia dei fratelli Adam, architetti scozzesi, accompagnati dal collega francese Clérisseau, a far conoscere all’Europa la magnificenza dell’antico Palazzo di Diocleziano, risorta come Pompei grazie alle incisioni del volume del 1763 e rinata nel gusto Adam delle residenze inglesi di Kenwood, Osterley Park, Harewood.

Kneževa palača u Cresu srušena je sredinom 19. stoljeća. U članku se raspravlja o njezinoj povijesti i izgledu, temeljeno na ranijim istraživanjima, ali i novim spoznajama iščitanim iz prikupljenih arhivskih dokumenata, bilješki creskog kneza i gradskog vijeća, pisama generalnih providura za Dalmaciju i konačno dokumenata nadležnih državnih tijela u Veneciji. Također se razmatraju i podaci o palači iz tek nekolicine sačuvanih slikovnih prikaza od kojih se po prvi put objavljuje tlocrt njezina prizemlja, izrađen u vrijeme prodaje i razgradnje palače 1854. godine.
