In contrast to quantitative approaches, where interaction effects are usually regarded as errors or disruption, we understand interviews as social situations and the interaction dynamics between interviewee and interviewer as constitutive for data collection and interpretation. We conducted interviews with various actors from the academic field for a research project in higher education research. Based on our field experience we assume that interviews also offer opportunities for the respondents to present themselves in a discursive process. In this article we first show that many of our interviewees perceived us as evaluators. We argue that the interviewees' self-presentations and rhetorical strategies were shaped by the evaluative and competitive environment in which they took place, i.e. that of the entrepreneurial university. Google Trends reveals that at the time we were writing our article on ‘The Coming Crisis of Empirical Sociology’ in 2007 almost nobody was searching the internet for ‘Big Data’. It was only towards the very end of 2010 that the term began to register, just ahead of an explosion of interest from 2011 onwards. In this commentary we take the opportunity to reflect back on the claims we made in that original paper in light of more recent discussions about the social scientific implications of the inundation of digital data. Did our paper, with its emphasis on the emergence of, what we termed, ‘social transactional data’ and ‘digital byproduct data’ prefigure contemporary debates that now form the basis and rationale for this excellent new journal? , 11-year-old Sabrina Buie's body was found in a soybean field in Red Springs, North Carolina, where she had been raped and murdered. Based solely on 17-year-old high school student Ethel Furmage's report of a rumour, the Red Springs Police suspected 19-year-old Henry McCollum of the murder and interrogated him overnight on 28-29 September 1983 for approximately five hours. During that time, according to McCollum, three police interrogators repeatedly accused him of the rape and murder and yelled at him, with one detective calling McCollum, who is African American, by use of the 'N-word'. The detectives repeatedly and falsely told McCollum that they had a witness who had seen him rape and murder Buie; they threatened McCollum with the death penalty if he did not confess to the rapemurder; and the detectives told McCollum, who had an intelligence quotient ('IQ') of 51, that they could make him a witness and promised he could go home if he signed a police-written confession to the crime. The detectives also suspected Leon Brown, McCollum's 15-year-old brother who was also mentally challenged (with an IQ of 49), as a coparticipant in the rape and murder. According to Brown, the detectives repeatedly yelled and pressured him to confess; they also called him by the 'N-word'; and they threatened him with the death penalty by gas chamber if he did not confess in their overnight interrogation on 28-29 September 1983. A new empirical model to estimate the joint shear strength of both exterior and interior beam–column connections is proposed. In the model, four parameters that have the most influence on joint shear strength are considered. Among these four, a new parameter is introduced to consider the bond condition and the possibility of beam bars transferring joint shear force into the columns. Consideration of this parameter in the model significantly improves the accuracy of the predicted joint shear strength. To calibrate the model, a large database of 98 reinforced concrete (RC) exterior and 73 RC interior beam–column connections displaying joint failure mode was compiled from the literature. A parametric study was also carried out to evaluate the dependence of the predicted to tested joint shear strength ratio on the four influence parameters using the database. The existence of unit roots in time series processes can impair the choice of techniques for analysis and forecasting time series data. It is of much importance in econometric modelling to determine the integration number of analyzed time series based on unit root tests. Though statistical theory provides broad range of unit root tests in standard softwares , the choice of an appropriate test highly depends on subjective assessment of the analyst. This paper considers similarity-based scoring approach for selecting the most appropriate unit root test for specific type of time series observations based on Chi-square statistic and which is able to reduce subjectivity. Six unit root tests are studied. The utility of the proposed method is illustrated in simulation. The most reliable test, which is found is applied to a real time series of some selected macroeconomic variables. Der Text befasst sich mit der Auswertung einer Studie zum Thema Leitung in der hoheren Bildung, die an einer australischen Universitat durchgefuhrt wurde. Ausgehend von RAMSDENs Konzept des "effective academic leadership" wurde ein Interviewleitfaden entwickelt, um verschiedene Aspekte von Leitung und Fuhrung erheben zu konnen. Auch wenn die Antworten der drei befragten Fuhrungskrafte in vieler Hinsicht dem theoretischem Modell von RAMSDEN entsprachen, fanden sich einige Unterschiede in deren Strategien. Auch wirft Leitung/Fuhrung im universitaren Bereich andere Probleme auf als zum Beispiel in Wirtschaftsunternehmen oder bei Regierungsstellen. Akademisches Leitungspersonal muss eng mit Lehre und Forschung verbunden bleiben, um wirksam zu sein. In diesem Sinne kann die Studie Fuhrungskrafte universitarer Einrichtungen in der Reflexion eigener Starken und Schwachen unterstutzen und auf diesem Weg zu einer Verbesserung der jeweiligen Fuhrungsstile beitragen. Dem zugigen Erstellen von Diplomarbeiten und Promotionen wird in Australien vermehrt Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, seit die Regierung im Jahr 2003 ein Fordersystem fur Universitaten eingerichtet hat, das u.a. die zeitgerechte Fertigstellung von studentischen Forschungsarbeiten honoriert. Eine australische Universitat hat hierauf mit der Einfuhrung von Lehr- und Lernplanen reagiert. Ziel dieser Vorgaben ist nicht nur die Verbesserung von Betreuungspraktiken, sondern auch die fruhzeitige Identifikation moglicher Wissenslucken. In diesem Beitrag werden die Erfahrungen von jeweils zwei Betreuer(inne)n und Studierenden im ersten Jahr der Einfuhrung der Lehr-/Lernplane dokumentiert. Zusammenfassung: Der Beitrag leitet in das Thema der Schwerpunktausgabe ein und skizziert unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten der Verknüpfung zwischen qualitativer Sozialforschung und Problemgegenständen professionellen Handelns.
