This article facilitates deeper insight into label-related consumer information acquisition behaviour. An integrated framework of label information search (LIS) has been developed based on a synthesis of related literature and explorative research conducted by analysing online discussions among customers (netnography). The framework focuses on three main groups of personal factors that serve as antecedents of LIS: general personal factors (e.g. health consciousness and socio-demographics), label-related personal factors (e.g. label-related self-efficacy, trust in labels and the perceived usefulness of labels) and product category-related personal factors (trust in food products, enduring involvement, experience and perceived quality differences). Important characteristics of the framework are its process-oriented nature and the dynamically changing relationships among its concepts. LIS is an antecedent to and a consequence of influencing factors. This article offers managerial implications and serves to incite future inquiry in this field.

The test report by Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration blamed that MAGGI noodles (the flagship brand of Nestle) contained lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG) higher than the permissible limits. This news spread like fire through social media. The company did not issue any definitive statement to address the concerns of regulators or consumers. Its sales receded from Rs 2000 Crore resulting in an estimated brand loss of Rs 1270 Crore. The company also had to incur a cost of Rs 320 Crore in recalling its product from all around the country. They claimed that their product is safe based on their tests and this has been confirmed by food regulators of seven countries including USA, UK, Singapore and Australia. It was later visualized that the way it was tested in India especially in most parts of the country had errors. So, who is guilty, the company authorities who could not visualize the surging tide against them or the testing authorities who tested the wrong way.

Our research aimed to reveal the effects that can be observed during the buying process of food products and can influence the decisions of customers. We focused on the role of enduring involvement in customers’ behavioural loyalty, that is, the repurchase of food brands. To understand this relationship in a more sophisticated way, we involved two mediating constructs in our conceptual model: perceived risk and perceived knowledge of food products. The data collection was carried out among undergraduate students in frame of an online survey, and we used SPSS/AMOS software to test the model. The results only partly supported our hypothesis, although the involvement effects on loyalty and the two mediating constructs were strong enough, loyalty couldn’t be explained well by perceived risk and knowledge. The roles of further mediating/moderating variables should be determined and investigated in the next section of the research series
