Filosofia Natural

Ao longo da Era Moderna os universos coloniais portugueses fi zeram parte de intensas dinâmicas de construção, extensão e reconfi guração de conhecimento científi co. Nesses espaços, ocorreram diversos e complexos processos de composição sincrética de saberes, ao mesmo tempo profundamente relacionados com as muitas especifi cidades e idiossincrasias locais e estreitamente conectados aos canais de circulação de conhecimento estabelecidos pelas instituições imperiais. Estes eram diretamente infl uenciados pelo universo macro das confi gurações estruturais, conjunturais, políticas, econômicas e sociais. Sobre isso trata este livro, cujo objetivo é contribuir para o estudo da História das Ciências no complexo do Império Português no século XVIII. Para cumprir este objetivo, a análise é direcionada aos processos de produção de conhecimento na Índia Portuguesa, compreendidos aqui como indissociáveis de seus contextos locais e, ao mesmo tempo, relacionados com seus envoltórios mais globais, em processos de construção, extensão, manutenção, reconfiguração do conhecimento.

Una delle personalità più complesse e affascinanti del panorama filosofico del Rinascimento è senz'altro quella di Teofrasto Paracelso. Nacque a Einsiedeln in Svizzera nel 1493 o 1494, forse il 10 novembre o forse il primo maggio. Figlio di un medico, Guglielmo di Hohenheim, Paracelso visse una vita all'insegna dell'irrequietezza e della critica aggressiva nei confronti della medicina tradizionale, quella galenica insegnata nelle università del suo tempo. Al di là delle scarse notizie che incontriamo negli scritti dello stesso Paracelso, nulla sappiamo della prima parte della sua vita e della sua educazione, sennonché ricevette i primi rudimenti della scienza medica dal proprio padre. Tra i numerosi maestri che contribuirono alla sua formazione, Paracelso ne ricorda per nome cinque: quattro vescovi e un abate, quest'ultimo il famoso arcimago Tritemio di Sponheim, chiamato il Pansophiae splendor magnus. L'abate di Sponhein, l'ideatore della steganografia per intenderci, mirava a raggiungere una «conoscenza universale» attraverso la decifrazione dei simboli che legavano assieme macro e micro cosmo, e la sua influenza riguardo alla riforma della medicina tentata da Teofrasto pare evidente; una riforma che, se da un lato gli procurò l'odio e le persecuzioni dei colleghi medici, dall'altro gli permise, a quanto si diceva, di operare miracolose guarigioni.

The Portuguese ship “Sao Pedro e Sao Paulo” left Macau, China, bound for Portugal, in January 1743. She arrived at the port of Lisbon on 12 September 1743. While unloading the ship, it was discovered that a snake had embarked in her, which was immediately killed and taken to the church of Nossa Senhora da Penha, together with a miniature of the ship, as a token of gratitude to the Virgin, for saving the crew from several dangers and because the snake had not killed any member of it. A wooden model of the snake was made afterwards, to accompany that of the “lagarto da Penha” already existing in that church. Out of curiosity, the Augustinian Father Francisco da Cunha, tried to identify the snake, publishing in that same year of 1743, under the pseudonym of “Ricardo Fineca Fascunh”, the booklet Relaçam da prodigiosa navegaçam da nao chamada S. Pedro, e S. Joam da Companhia de Macao. In this work, in a certain way a treatise of herpetology, Cunha discussed the creation of reptiles by God in the fifth day of the Creation, the etymologies of several snake names, the generation of these reptiles (both sexual and by spontaneous generation), their sympathies and antipathies in relation to other animals and plants, finally listing some 50 species of snakes, in a frustrated attempt to identify the snake which had come from Macau. His commentaries are abridged paraphrases, with some alterations and translation errors, of the works of Jonstonus (1653), precipuously, and Nieremberg (1635), secondarily; he also seems to have consulted the books of Gesner (1587) and Ray (1693), besides some other works. Through his short and insufficient description of the snake transported by the ship “Sao Pedro e Sao Paulo”, we can only conjecture that it was a specimen of Pelamis platura (Linnaeus, 1766) (Elapidae, Hydrophiidae).

The colonization of America Portuguese (Brazil) was the subject of numerous investigations. However, not much is known about the processes of recognition, description and classification of the new environment of the colony. Virtually all reports, treatises and letters that were written by travelers or colonizers who arrived during the sixteenth century, in the tropics, contain descriptions of animals and plants. Before implementing sugar plantations or start trading cock-Brazil, the Portuguese people had to develop survival skills and adaptation to climate and new kinds of food. After all, when food from ships' bilges ended, left the colonizers find a safe way to stay in that new environment.

Resumo: A colonização da América Portuguesa foi tema de inúmeras investigações. Contudo, pouco se verificou sobre os processos de reconhecimento, descrição e classificação do novo ambiente daquela colônia. Praticamente todos os relatos, tratados e cartas que foram escritos por colonizadores ou viajantes que aportaram, durante o século XVI, nos trópicos, contêm descrições de animais e plantas. Antes de implementar engenhos de açúcar ou de iniciar o comércio de pau-brasil, os portugueses tiveram de desenvolver técnicas de sobrevivência e adaptação, tanto ao clima quanto a nova alimentação. Afinal, quando os alimentos dos porões dos navios acabaram, restava àqueles homens encontrar um meio seguro para se manter naquele ambiente inóspito.

This article examines the action of the Lusitanian crown, to promote, in 1783, the travel of Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira into America, to collect and describe animals, plants and minerals, besides delimiting frontiers in litigation with Spain. The article also allows us to rediscuss that classic perspective of the Lusitanian's Enlightenment as a tardy and shy movement.

A hard, constant and pragmatic work was developed by the early settlers of the New World in order to obtain all available information on that ecosystem. The identification of species of animals that could be hunted and fished was probably one of the first concerns of these mens. In this process of recognition of the New World’s fauna, were of central importance the treaties, compilations and letters that could be useful to the comprehension of the challenges and obstacles encountered by Portuguese settlers disembarked in the Tropics. From the approach of the History of Science, we intend to list and analyze the processes of classification developed by the first European inhabitants of the colony during the sixteenth century.
Um trabalho árduo, constante e pragmático foi desenvolvido pelos primeiros colonizadores do Novo Mundo no sentido de obter toda a informação disponível acerca daquele ecossistema. A identificação de espécies de animais que pudessem ser caçados e pescados foi, provavelmente, uma das primeiras preocupações dos colonizadores. Neste processo de reconhecimento da fauna, destacamos os tratados, compilações e cartas que possam ser úteis para compreendermos os desafios e obstáculos encontrados pelos colonizadores portugueses ao desembarcarem nos Trópicos. A partir dos conceitos da História das Ciências, pretendemos elencar e analisar os processos classificatórios desenvolvidos pelos primeiros moradores da colônia ao longo do século XVI."

O tabaco (Nicotiana sp.) foi um dos elementos botânicos do Novo Mundo que mais aguçaram a curiosidade de diversos viajantes, eruditos, médicos e filósofos naturais em ambos os lados do Atlântico. As plantas do Gênero Nicotiana rapidamente ganharam notoriedade entre homens de letras. O hiato entre as primeiras descrições sobre os diversos predicados do tabaco e sua introdução na Europa foi consideravelmente curto. É provável que os rumores a respeito das propriedades das plantas de Nicotiana tenham chegado à Europa concomitantente às primeiras folhas ou sementes. Muitos destes relatos incluíam informações a respeito de seu uso pelos povos indígenas. Sua relevância, em meio aos ameríndios, suscitou nos europeus, mesmo com todas as barreiras culturais, um considerável interesse por suas possíveis aplicações e uma irresistível disposição em justificar seu uso.

Tobacco (Nicotiana sp.) was one of the New World’s botanical elements that most whetted the curiosity of many travelers, scholars, physicians and natural philosophers on both sides of the Atlantic. The plants of the Nicotiana genus quickly gained notoriety among men of letters. The hiatus between the first descriptions about the predicates of tobacco and its introduction in Europe was considerably short. It is possible that the rumors about the properties of tobacco have arrived in Europe at the same time as the first leaves or seeds. Many of these reports included information about its use by indigenous peoples. Tobacco’s relevance in the Amerindian culture raised in Europeans, even with all cultural barriers, a considerable interest for its potential applications and an overwhelming willingness to justify its use.

This examination of academic works produced by eighteenth-century natural philosophers discusses some recurring ideas about the Chain of Being. To this end, the article analyzes the relations between natural philosophy and theology during the period. It also re-evaluates some elements of the Chain of Being through an exploration of authors who addressed the topic in their writings. Lastly, it identifies a specific element within eighteenth-century discussions of scala naturae, to wit, the various and not always convergent ideas about whether there are differences between humans based on specific characteristics and, consequently, about the places they occupy in the chain of being.

Por meio da análise de obras acadêmicas produzidas por filósofos naturais no século XVIII, pretendemos discutir algumas ideias recorrentes acerca da Grande Cadeia do Ser. Para tal, analisamos as relações entre filosofia e teologia natural no período. Reavaliamos ainda alguns elementos da Cadeia do Ser, investigando autores que discorreram sobre o tema em seus escritos. Por fim, elencamos um ponto específico das discussões setecentistas sobre a scala naturae, qual seja, as diversas e nem sempre convergentes ideias de que, a partir de características específicas, haveria diferenças entre os homens, bem como seu consequente lugar na Cadeia do Ser.

The chemist Max von Pettenkofer (1818-1901) studied with Justus von Liebig, and after leaving Giessen in 1844 did not immediately find an academic position. During the period 1844/1845 he wrote a cycle of 16 Chemical Sonnets (Chemische Sonette), but published them only in 1886. The Sonnets have with few exceptions a historiographical character. We present a translation of the Sonette into Portuguese as well as commentaries about their content and their philosophical significance. We also comment rather briefly on Pettenkofer’s career as an empirical chemist and later as a somewhat heterodox hygienist.

Quais são os pontos dissonantes e coincidentes entre ciência empírica e Metafísica? Onde elas andam juntas e onde caminham separadas? O texto explorar ainda as diferenças e sutilezas entre ciência prática e teórica e como se relacionam com a nossa humanidade.

The aim of this article is to understand the processes of construction of knowledge on the Brazilian nature in the eighteenth century, based on the case study of Francisco António de Sampaio and his work on natural philosophy. I seek to study these processes as being the result of dynamics of circulation of knowledge, exchanges and negotiations, and the establishment of power relations. The objective is to demonstrate how these dimensions were fundamental for the production of scientific knowledge in colonial spaces, as well as for their circulation and validation by the metropolitan’s savant society.

Os estudos de Galileu são reconhecidos por diversos historiadores, especialmente devido sua proposta
de geometrização do comportamento dos corpos físicos em sistemas mecânicos. Porém, consideramos
que esse processo não se restringiu às discussões exclusivas ao âmbito da Filosofia Natural, mas também quanto
à validação da relação desta com a geometria, sofrendo a influência de agentes e dinâmicas sociais, dentre as
quais encontramos um Galileu político, intervindo em espaços como as Cortes Italianas e o Collegio Romano.
Assim, este artigo tem como objetivo analisar os vínculos estabelecidos por Galileu com esses agentes sociais
que intervieram e promulgaram a legitimação das matemáticas nos estudos da Filosofia Natural.
