Foreign Ownership

This paper evaluates the effects of foreign ownership on the going-concern of Nigerian quoted banks. The  paper is produced based on the ex-post facto research design. Data were generated from the annual reports and financial statement of listed firms from  2011 to 2015. The population of  the study consists of all fifteen  (15) banks quoted on the Nigerian  Stock Exchange. Descriptive statistics,  Pearson correlation,  along  with fixed-effect and random-effect generalised least square (GLS)  regression techniques. Hausman Specification Test had been used as the decision rule of the analysis. The results establish that there is a significant positive relationship between the foreign ownership and going concern of listed Banks in Nigeria. It suggested that banks  should encourage foreign investment as is likely to increase ease of contact to resources,  therefore, safeguarding the supply  of resources precarious to its going concern.

This study explains the phenomenon of factors that influence firm value. Based
on the phenomenon and associated with the theory, the factors that influence
firm value are social responsibility disclosure (CSR), good corporate
governance (GCG) and foreign ownership (KA). The success of a company is
often associated with stock prices and firm value. The stock prices for
companies that have good value tend to be high both short and long term.
The research objective is to provide empirical evidence that CSR disclosure
factors, GCG and KA, influence the firm value. This research was conducted
at manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2015–
2017. The samples were manufacturing companies located on the Indonesia
Stock Exchange selected using a non-probability sampling method,
specifically purposive sampling. Multiple linear regression technique was
used for data analysis. Based on the results of the research, the factors that
influence the firm value are disclosure of CSR, GCG, and KA; and they have
a positive effect on firm value.

This study empirically examines the effect of corporate board structure on foreign share ownership in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Specifically, it examines the effect of the financial expertise of the board of directors, board size, board independence and board meeting on foreign share ownership. The analysis is spanned the period of 2012-2015 for 142 non-financial listed companies on the GCC stock markets. The results demonstrate that foreign share ownership is positively related to the financial expertise of the board of directors, board size and board independence. The implication of this study may help users in making better public policy decisions, and provide guidance for corporate managers on the needs of foreign investors.

With the surge up in foreign direct investments, the percentage of foreign ownership in total has increased within the domestic firms in emerging markets and especially in Turkey. Due to the advantages of foreign ownership, firm profitability is expected to ameliorate as opposed to domestically owned firms. Empirical studies conducted
on this topic demonstrate conflicting results. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of foreign ownership on firm performance for the publicly listed companies in Turkey using a panel of 256 Turkish firms over the 2009-2014 period. “Generalized method of moments” is used as the main methodology, which helps overcoming the endogeneity problem to a great extent. The results derived from this study indicate that foreign ownership improves firm profitability up to a certain level; however, after the threshold limit, the surge up in foreign ownership starts to deteriorate firm performance.

ABSTRACT During the 1990’s, rapid growth in China was accompanied by strong growth in foreign direct investment (FDI). FDI continued to grow until 1997 when it leveled off. It is clear that in 1998, under the shadow of the East Asian Crisis, China fell out of favour. Attempts by China to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO) have recently progressed to the final stages with the signing of agreements with the United States, Europe and Japan. It is hoped that China’s accession to the WTO will accelerate changes in China toward a market economy and attract foreign investment back to China. In this paper we explore the implications of WTO accession for market rates of return and hence on investment in China using the dynamic GTAP model. The dynamic GTAP model is applied to an 11-region by 13-commodity aggregation of the GTAP database, supplemented with foreign income data. The paper also takes into account duty drawbacks. It is found that the effect of accession on rates of return can play an important role in enhancing China’s attractiveness as a destination for foreign investment.

The study seeks to examine the effect of equity ownership structure on firm financial performance in South Korea. I focus on the role of two main dimensions of the ownership structure- Ownership concentration (i.e., the distribution of shares owned by majority shareholders) and identity of owners (especially, foreign investors and institutional investors). Using panel data for South Korea in 2000--2006, I find that firm performance measured by the accounting rate of return on assets generally improves as ownership concentration increases, but the effects of foreign ownership and institutional ownership are insignificant. I also find that there exists a hump-shaped relationship between ownership concentration and firm performance, in which firm performance peaks at intermediate levels of ownership concentration. This study aims to determine the effect of Corporate Governance, which is proxied by Board Compensation, Board Meeting Frequency, Board Age, Foreign Ownership, and Concentrated Ownership on the profitability of commercial banks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in Indonesia with Firm Size as the control variable. Profitability is proxied by Return on Assets (ROA) as a measure of the company's ability to earn a profit from the use of all its resources or assets. This study uses secondary data obtained from the annual reports of commercial banks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) during the 2015-2019 period. The number of samples used was 26 with purposive sampling method, in order to obtain a total of 130 observations. This study uses multiple linear regression methods with the IBM SPSS 25 program consisting of the f statistical test, t statistical test, the coefficient of determination (R 2) and the classical assumption test. During the observation period, it shows that the data in this study are normally distributed. This shows that the data used has met the requirements to use the multiple linear regression equation model. The results of this study indicate that board compensation and board age have a positive and significant effect on bank profitability, and board meeting frequency and concentrated ownership have a negative and significant effect on bank profitability. Meanwhile, the results for foreign ownership show that there is no significant effect on bank profitability.

By estimating stochastic frontiers we investigate the determinants and dynamics of firm efficiency. We use a representative sample of Estonian firms for the period 1993-1999 – and are able to address problems that plague much previous work, such as the endogeneity of ownership. Our main findings are that: (i) foreign ownership increases technical efficiency; (ii) firm size and higher labor quality enhance efficiency, while soft budget constraints adversely affect efficiency; (iv) Estonian firms operate under constants returns to scale; (v) the percentage of firms operating at high levels of efficiency increases over time. As such our findings provide support for hypotheses that a firm’s ownership structure and its characteristics such as firm size, labor quality, soft budget constraints and time of privatization are important for its technical efficiency.

This study empirically examines the impact of effectiveness of both corporate boards and audit committee on foreign ownership in selected non-financial listed companies of the stock markets in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The study was built on fixed effect model and conducted over the period of 2012-2015 for 143 non-financial listed companies on the GCC stock markets. Our results explain that foreign ownership is positively related to the effectiveness of both the boards of directors and the audit committees. The implication of this study may help beneficiaries in making better policy decisions and provide guidance for
corporate managers on the needs of foreign investors.
