Gruppe 47

This paper investigates one of those key decision points in post-war German society, which has only been superficially explored until now. The changing concept of God in the Trümmerliteratur of Germany’s post-war literary revival led the way for a re-examination by many Germans of their religious beliefs and whether it was even worthwhile to give the possible existence of a God a second thought. They reconsidered whether a faith in a “Märchenbuchliebergott” as coined by Wolfgang Borchert, was still a tenable model for post-war German society. Central to the paper are the literary works of Borchert, who, with a slim published oeuvre, investigates the many different facets of God through his wartime experiences and the consequences he faced upon his return home. This paper demonstrates that Borchert comes to the conclusion that the concept of God gives humans a convenient excuse for their brutality, while the real God is ineffable and can only be found in the act of searching; a deistic vision of God that rejects the revelations of religion and theology. These discussions have lain dormant since the early 1950s, as Germany’s Wirtschaftswunder emerged from the rubble. However, in recent years, Germans born after the war have begun to re-evaluate the literature of the period and in
particular that of Borchert as a necessary balm that allowed them to heal from the trauma of the war.

Questo lavoro si propone di introdurre la figura di Ingeborg Bachmann, presentandone due testi poetici e i relativi commenti pubblicati nella Frankfurter Anthologie in traduzione inedita italiana. I testi sono il punto di partenza per una ulteriore riflessione sulla poetica della Bachmann, cui si aggiungono delle ipotesi traduttive inedite delle poesie presentate.

L'opera di Wolfgang Hildesheimer (1916-1991) sta progressivamente scomparendo dalla coscienza letteraria odierna, quasi a conferma della definizione che l'io di Vergebliche Aufzeichnungen (1962) dà della propria scrittura: uno sforzo tanto onesto quanto inutile. A metà degli anni Settanta, nel noto discorso The End of Fiction, l'autore prende le distanze da certe tendenze della letteratura contemporanea, parlando della fine dell'epoca delle grandi finzioni narrative a seguito della cesura storica dei campi di sterminio, una realtà questa, che egli aveva conosciuto da vicino durante la sua attività di interprete a Norimberga e alla quale, come ebreo, era sfuggito grazie all'emigrazione della famiglia in Palestina. Qualche anno dopo, Hildesheimer estremizza la sua posizione e sceglie il silenzio, affermando l'impossibilità della letteratura in un mondo «senza amore». La poetica dell'assurdo, soggiacente a tutta la sua produzione letteraria, trova in questo giudizio disincantato e radicale sulla storia la sua espressione più decisa. La sempre più marcata (auto-)marginalizzazione dell'autore è legata a tale giudizio, che, d'altro canto, testimonia ex negativo un'idea molto alta della scrittura letteraria: essa segna l'opera di Hildesheimer, la quale, radicata nella tradizione occidentale, si delinea come un progetto estetico ed etico di resistenza alla violenza e alla sua rimozione dalla memoria collettiva e culturale.

Pur rifiutando posizioni conservatrici e restando sempre sensibile alle problematiche del suo tempo, Hildesheimer non ha creduto nell'efficacia della cosiddetta letteratura impegnata; sul solco della grande letteratura modernista europea, di cui è stato importante traduttore, e qualche anno dopo il successo delle Lieblose Legenden (1952), ha scelto piuttosto una scrittura della coscienza per avvicinarsi a quella «dimensione Auschwitz» apparentemente scomparsa dalla realtà ma ancora presente - questa almeno la sua convinzione - se non nel conscio, almeno nel subconscio. L'attenzione alla soggettività, intesa non come rifugio dalla realtà bensì come il luogo della sua sedimentazione più profonda, caratterizza anche la partecipazione di Hildesheimer al discorso musicale e artistico, cui ha contribuito in modo significativo e, per quegli anni, nuovo, coniugando indagine soggettiva e ricerca storica di fonti e documenti.

Questo numero di «Cultura Tedesca» rappresenta il primo studio italiano sistematico su Hildesheimer e propone un percorso di analisi su un'opera ancora capace di interessare e il cui valore letterario la critica internazionale, in particolare tedesca, ha riconosciuto da tempo. Il percorso ha preso avvio da un convegno tenutosi presso l'Università di Pisa nel dicembre 2016, in occasione del centenario della nascita dell'autore. L'assunzione di un'ottica necessariamente storica e interdisciplinare, così come la trattazione di testi e temi finora scarsamente studiati, fanno del volume un contributo originale alla ricerca sull'autore e sulla letteratura tedesca del secondo Novecento.

The essay focuses on the friendship and collaborative relationship between Heinrich Böll and the founder and mentor of the 'Group 47', Hans Werner Richter. The subject of the essay does not only entail the Group’s role in the career of the future winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Heinrich Böll but above all, the different conceptions of Böll and Richter concerning the role of intellectuals in the Bundesrepublik society in the Fifties and Sixties of the Twentieth Century. Their visions become irreconcilable on the issue of politics, for example, in support of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and then-candidate Willy Brandt. Analysing the correspondence, the diaries and the essayistic production of both, it is evident that both established a 'habitus' (in the sense of Pierre Bourdieu) of German intellectuals in the literary field, which had left its mark on the world for the years to come.

In Heiner Müllers großem Revolutionsstück "Der Auftrag" findet sich der Satz: „Ich fürchte mich vor der Schande, auf dieser Welt glücklich zu sein.“ Niemandem war diese Schande wohl vertrauter als dem großen revolutionären Moralisten Alfred Andersch. Sein Werk und sein Leben verhandeln mit der Schande des persönlichen Versagens nach 1933 unser aller menschliches Versagen in den gesellschaftlichen Zeitfragen, in die wir bis ins kleinste Detail verstrickt sind und die von unserem Handeln abhängen. In Zeiten, in denen endlich die Frage diskutiert wird, warum die heutige deutschsprachige Literatur so „brav und konformistisch“ sei, lohnt es, sich ein Beispiel am Nonkonformisten des Wortes und der Tat zu nehmen, an Alfred Andersch.

This paper looks in detail at how the Gruppe 47 has been presented in the media since its official demise in 1967, and considers why the group still has a high level of symbolic capital decades after its active participation in the German literary field. Focusing on previously unresearched TV documentary material from the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, it posits that the group’s enduring importance in the German cultural landscape can be traced to the way it has been narratively and visually reconstructed within the mythologizing, emotive, and widely resonant terms of the Heimat discourse. Drawing on various philosophical and conceptual approaches to Heimat and applying them specifically to the context of a country’s perceived cultural tradition, I conceive of the Gruppe 47 as a “cultural Heimat” for the economically and culturally dominant white, middle class German literary field. In so doing, I show how a specifically literary culture can be repackaged in the age of mass media to carry important debates about national identity and symbolize the search for an elusive collective cultural heritage.
