Fanny Lewalds urbanes Arkadien analysiert die Reisebeschreibungen Fanny Lewalds als Werke, die in den wenig erforschten Traditionen der weiblichen und der kritisch-alternativen Italienbeschreibung stehen. 1845, als die junge deutsch-jüdische Schriftstellerin erstmals nach Italien aufbrach, suchte sie, ganz in der Tradition der grand tour, Bildung und Welterkenntnis. In ihrem Italienischen Bilderbuch wie im Römischen Tagebuch beschreibt sie aber keine Museumslandschaften, sondern die Volksfeste und das Theater, das sich auf italienischen Straßen abspielt. Im zweiten Reisebericht, Ein Winter in Rom (1866/67) geht es darum, wie der Erfolg des Risorgimento und der daraus resultierende Prozeß der Nationenbildung italienische Städte verändern. Thema der Studie ist immer wieder Fanny Lewalds Schilderung der deutsch-römischen Geselligkeit, in der kosmopolitische Intellektuelle aus ganz Europa zusammentrafen. Die Aufarbeitung der Salons und Zirkel in der Analyse des Italienischen Bilderbuchs wie des Winters in Rom betritt genauso wissenschaftliches Neuland wie die Analyse von Lewalds Reisebriefen der Jahre 1876/77. In diesen Jahren wurde die ‚Ewige Stadt‘ zur Hauptstadt umgebaut, was unter vielen nordeuropäischen Italienliebhabern zu hitzigen Debatten führte. Im Vordergrund der Analyse der Reisebriefe stehen die veränderte Physiognomie Roms und Lewalds Einschätzungen des Risorgimento samt seiner Protagonisten Mazzini und Garibaldi. Die wenig erforschte Italienrezeption der Gründerzeit wird analysiert und aufgezeigt, dass politisierte und kulturelle Italienrezeption keinen Widerspruch bilden müssen, denn italienische Kunst und Kultur kommen bei Lewald selten zu kurz. Besonders ihre letzte Reisebeschreibung Vom Sund zum Posilip. Briefe aus den Jahren 1879 bis 1881 schafft es immer wieder, den Zauber italienischer Städte lebendig werden zu lassen, was nicht zuletzt durch intensive Beschreibung der sinnlichen Qualitäten des urbanen Lebens gelingt.

Nach der Grand Tour und vor dem Zeitalter des industriell organisierten Massentourismus – also im Vormärz – stößt die Reiseliteratur in neue Dimensionen vor. Bewegung und Horizonterweiterung werden in vielen Reiseberichten dieser Zeit offensiv gesucht. Als Folge davon entsteht ein vieldimensionales Diskursgefüge, in dem sich die thematischen Ebenen und Perspektiven immer wieder überschneiden und Kunst, Gesellschaft und Politik gleichermaßen wichtig sind. Das differenziert das Bild der Epoche, denn die Reisebeschreibungen des Vormärz sind auch dann politisch bewusst, wenn sie nicht primär Politisches diskutieren. Sie sind darüber hinaus auch heiter, neugierig, manchmal sinnlich oder traurig und bedienen also keines der gängigen Klischee vom Vormärz. In den Beiträgen des Sammelbandes werden unterschiedlichste Reisen und Themen sehr unterschiedlicher Autorinnen wie Autoren analysiert. Fanny Lewald, Ida Hahn-Hahn, Louise Aston, Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn, Johanna Schopenhauer, Fanny Tarnow, Betty Paoli, Helmina von Chézys, Therese von Bacheracht, Malwida von Meysenbug, Friedrich Engels, Albert Dulk oder Karl Nauwerck nutzen die Reisebeschreibung als Medium der polischen und persönlichen Selbstverständigung. Dabei geben sie Auskunft über die soziale, kulturelle und politische Realität der von ihnen bereisten Länder und versuchen immer wieder, kritische Inhalte am Zensor vorbei nach Deutschland zu schmuggeln, um über die Verhältnisse im Ausland zu informieren und gleichzeitig für Veränderungen daheim zu werben.
