HISTORICAL SEISMICITY

In the first days of the month of February of 1964, a meteorite is sighted in Caracas and
neighboring regions early on the morning, coinciding (?) with a seismic event of low
magnitude and epicentre in the state of Miranda. This event causes besides the population’s
surprise reflected in the newspapers, an even unpublished epistolary exchange, among the
geologist Dr. Guillermo Zuloaga, member of Creole Petroleum Corporation ́s board of
directors, and the seismologist Günther Fiedler, director of the Observatory of Seismology
and Terrestrial Tides of Caracas in a desire of obtaining answer to this phenomenon.
The present paper contributes data for the verification of a probable induced earthquake,
product of the meteoric impact in region of Paracotos, state of Miranda. This relationship
showed, based on the analysis of newspapers; in the Zuloaga-Fiedler ́s letters; and the
seismological data coming from the Cajigal Observatory included a fraction of the
seismogram obtained in a newspaper; besides consulted astronomer ́s references.

Lo studio del terremoto del 10 settembre 1881 nell’Abruzzo
meridionale si colloca nell’ambito di una più ampia ricerca
dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia sugli eventi
sismici che hanno interessato l’area abruzzese tra il XIX e il
XX secolo. Nello specifico, l’interesse per il terremoto in oggetto
risiede nella peculiarità della posizione geografica dell’area
epicentrale. Infatti, questa non è da individuarsi – come
solitamente avviene per la maggior parte dei terremoti abruzzesi
al di sopra della soglia del danno – nella regione appenninica,
bensì nell’ampia fascia pedemontana e collinare “esterna”
alla catena montuosa, a est della Maiella, nel cuore della
provincia di Chieti. Questa regione è attualmente ancora poco
definita per quanto attiene il comportamento sismogenetico.
In particolare, i) non sono note le faglie responsabili degli
eventi sismici con lo stesso dettaglio disponibile per l’Abruzzo
interno; ii) non è chiara l’origine del grande terremoto del 3
novembre 1706 – cioè non è noto se la faglia che l’ha causato
sia anch’essa da ricercarsi a est della Maiella o meno; iii) al
contrario del settore appenninico, non è possibile formulareipotesi sui territori ove potrebbero attendersi forti terremoti
in futuro. Nel complesso, questi aspetti – tra i vari di interesse
per la difesa dai terremoti – sono da considerarsi sufficienti
ad indirizzare ricerche specifiche sui settori abruzzesi prossimi
all’Adriatico.
L’evento sismico, conosciuto nei repertori sismologici e
parametrizzato in CPTI04 con intensità epicentrale (Io) 8 e
magnitudo (Maw) pari a 5,6, era noto attraverso due fonti
principali, potremmo dire uniche: De Rossi e Baratta. Esso
fu responsabile di sensibile danneggiamento in una ristretta
area tra le attuali province di Chieti e Pescara, con forti danni
in un’area compresa tra Orsogna, Lanciano e Castel Frentano.
In particolare, De Rossi raccolse relazioni a lui pervenute da
corrispondenti o da giornali locali, essendo la zona epicentrale
all’epoca priva di osservatori sismici. Annotazioni dettagliate
sul patrimonio edilizio di Orsogna prima e dopo il terremoto
sono invece reperibili in Costantini, testimone diretto dell’evento.
Tali contributi costituiscono la principale base informativa
del Catalogo dei Forti Terremoti Italiani5, nel quale il
terremoto è riportato con una massima intensità nell’abitato
di Orsogna (8.5) ed un’area di danneggiamento comprensiva
di 18 località. Tra queste, Arielli, Guardiagrele e Poggiofiorito
subiscono effetti valutati con un’intensità pari a 8.
La conoscenza dell’impatto dell’evento ci appare tuttavia
incompleta, in quanto la distribuzione delle località dotate di
informazioni è discontinua, come risulta anche dalla semplice
consultazione delle mappe: per le adiacenze dei due abitati
di Orsogna e Guardiagrele, fortemente danneggiati, si osserva
l’anomalia dell’assenza di punti d’intensità; inoltre, verso la
Maiella e verso sud le informazioni sono scarse o del tutto
assenti.
Ciò considerato, dopo la necessaria rilettura critica della bibliografia
citata in CFTI2, lo studio è stato condotto mediante
nuove acquisizioni e finalizzato a meglio caratterizzare il danno
del 1881 ai vari abitati. L’esito della ricerca è sintetizzato
in una nuova distribuzione del danno, con un sensibile incremento
del numero delle località per cui si hanno tracce degli
effetti del sisma e una più calibrata attribuzione dell’intensità.

The 11 May 1624 Fez earthquake is one of the worst natural disasters in the history of Morocco, and caused serious damage in the city of Fez and its surroundings. It occurred in one of the most active seismic zones in the country, and in an area that is now densely populated. The 1624 earthquake occurred at a crucial time in the history of Morocco (decline of the Saadian dynasty and outbreak of internal wars) which explains the lack of sufficient information on the extensive devastation that resulted from the earthquake. We consulted several Moroccan and European sources, whenever possible first hand. A complete historical review of testimonies and journals of the time describing this particular earthquake has been carried out. Correlation these effects with the local geological setting and the most recent seismological data shows that the focal region of the 1624 Fez earthquake is likely to be located somewhere along the E—W trending Rides Prérifaines, the main frontal thrust of the Rif. An evaluation of the magnitude of the earthquake is proposed, on the basis of existing empirical relationships. Understanding this earthquake may improve the seismic hazard assessment of the region.

This work focuses on the predictive character in the field of environmental safety of the Dynamic Atlas of Rome,
and on the historical seismicity of the city. A tool based on the knowledge of the constructive implications induced
by the historical building and urban process.

This work presents a contribution for a catalogue of the earthquake-resistant traditional techniques representing the urban, architectural and the structural aspects used in the Casbah of Algiers. These techniques were highlighted by a detailed historical research in documentary sources (written and graphic sources, files, etc.) together with an archaeological investigation on the site and a comparison to the modern seismic design codes. The Casbah of Algiers suffered the effects of several earthquakes from its establishment to today. The first reported earthquake goes back to 1365 and the last one is that of May 21 2003. It is of interest to mention no research in historical seismicity in Algeria has been conducted, expect for some well known destructive events. The data have been reviewed only for the 20th century. In1716, an earthquake whose intensity was estimated at IX damaged seriously the Casbah of Algiers. Following that earthquake disaster, it is deferred that the authority...
