History and Theory of the Theatre

Θεατρολογική ανάλυση της κωμωδίας του Xουρμούζη με τη βοήθεια μαθηματικών μοντέλων και της θεωρίας των γράφων. Προσπάθεια ελέγχου της εφαρμογής μαθηματικών μοντέλων στη μελέτη του θεάτρου, όπως επιχειρείται από τη ρουμάνικη σχολή θεατρολόγων (Marcus, Dinu κ.ά.). Ως κείμενο αναφοράς έχει επιλεγεί ο Xαρτοπαίκτης  του M. Xουρμούζη, με στόχο τη δοκιμασία σύγχρονων μοντέλων ανάλυσης σ’ ένα κείμενο που φέρει την κληρονομιά του Shakespeare, του Molière, του Goldoni κ.ά. και κληροδοτεί πολύτιμες εμπειρίες για τους μεταγενέστερους ―  και μάλιστα σε μια καίρια καμπή στην ιστορία του νεοελληνικού πνεύματος. H ανάλυση εκκινεί με τον εντοπισμό των διδασκαλιών του κειμένου, προκειμένου να δειχθεί η  συμβολή τους στην προετοιμασία της δυνητικής σκηνικής εκπλήρωσης του έργου. Στη συνέχεια εντοπίζονται οι σταθεροί άξονες και οι κατηγορίες στις οποίες υπάγονται τα πρόσωπα του έργου, καθώς και οι λειτουργίες που τελούν. Διαγράφονται, έτσι, οι σχέσεις συνεργίας και αντιπαλότητας των προσώπων στην πλοκή, καθώς καταλαμβάνουν τις συγκεκριμένες θέσεις στο συντελεστικό  μοντέλο, αλλά και οι κύκλοι ισορροπίας και αστάθειας. Eφ’ εξής αναλύονται τα ποσοτικά μεγέθη που αφορούν στην κινητικότητα και στην πυκνότητα λόγου των προσώπων. Aκολουθεί μια σειρά ορισμών και τεχνικών υποδείξεων για την κατασκευή ενός αναλυτικού αλγορίθμου υπολογισμού της σκηνικής διαμέτρου. Eξετάζονται χωριστά,  βάσει του μεγέθους της σκηνικής παρουσίας των προσώπων, η σκηνική πληρότητα του έργου και ο βαθμός συνεμφάνισης (συνάντησης) των προσώπων. H ανάλυση οδηγείται, έτσι, στον εντοπισμό της σκηνικής απόστασης των προσώπων, της διαμέτρου του έργου και των πυρήνων που σχηματίζονται βάσει του γραφήματος συνεμφάνισης των προσώπων. Oι επιμέρους αναλύσεις είναι διατεταγμένες κατά τέτοιο τρόπο, ώστε να οδηγούν σε μια σταδιακή αναγνώριση των πολύπλευρων σχέσεων που διέπουν τα δραματικά πρόσωπα σε κάθε τους σχηματισμό, σε μια κλιμακούμενη αποκάλυψη της γενικής στρατηγικής του έργου και της συγκεκριμένης μεθοδολογίας, η οποία στοχεύει σε αντισταθμιστικές αναλύσεις των σχέσεων μεταξύ κεντρικών και δευτερευόντων προσώπων. Oι αντισταθμίσεις αυτές προσδιορίζουν καίρια τη σχεσιοδυναμική των προσώπων κάθε αξιόλογου  δραματικού κειμένου  και μπορούν να μελετηθούν ασφαλέστερα χάρη στις ποσοτικές αναλύσεις. Διαπιστώνεται όμως πως ό,τι ισχύει για τη σχεσιοδυναμική των προσώπων ως προς τις ποσοτικές αναλύσεις, ισχύει ακόμα περισσότερο, για τις ίδιες τις ποσοτικές αναλύσεις ως προς το κοινωνικό- ιστορικό και ιδεολογικό έδαφος του έργου εν συνόλω: καμία ανάλυση δεν κυρώνεται εκτός του πεδίου αυτού και θα πρέπει πάντοτε να προσανατολίζεται προς τα δραματικά πρόσωπα, εκλαμβάνοντάς τα ως οργανικές ενότητες δράσης μιας ενιαίας συμβολικής πραγματικότητας.

The article explores some pre-Christian, Christian and post-Christian celebratory rituals that exist in a Nordic tradition of Christmas feasts, with a particular focus on the Norwegian Yule. A key theme is the presentation and discussion of rituals and performative events in the described celebrations, along with observations on the interesting etymology of words and names, as well as myths and legends, associated with Yule celebrations. The article looks at some roots of theatre in early religious ritual and dramatic elements in folk practice, and at beliefs and customs that have shaped present day Christmas – or Yule - traditions in the North. Στη γενική κατάσταση εξαίρεσης, όπως αυτή της πανδημίας η οποία εξώθησε τους θεατρικούς καλλιτέχνες στα ψηφιακά καταφύγια, ο κίνδυνος είναι η εδραίωση μιας κουλτούρας της υπακοής και της κοινωνικής απόστασης, η φυσικοποίηση της ατομικής «υπευθυνότητας» και του εθελοντισμού και η αποσιώπηση της πολιτικής ευθύνης. Για το θέατρο, ειδικότερα, το διακύβευμα δεν είναι να θεωρηθεί η προσωρινή ψηφιακή στέγη ως μόνιμη, αλλά ως ενδεδειγμένη λόγω μιας δήθεν νομοτελειακής εξέλιξης.

The term “popular theatre” denotes a cultural creation the specific features of which remain constant and characteristic of this theatrical category (Grammatas 2006 : 239-241)  despite any changes that might have taken place over the times. Its basic source of origin is the “ritual”, which, though not identical, relates to the concepts of “ritual” and “custom”, and is often used interchangeably in international bibliography (Puchner 1985 : 40). Beyond any particular conceptual analyses, “folk theatre” is understood as “dramatized rite” (Kakouri 1980 : 59-104), which is “acted” and “realised” in combination with the concept of “performability”, connected both to the meaning itself (actors, action) as well as its usage on the part of the attending conscience (audience). In this meaning, the “popular activities” includes the genetic/anthropological as well as the social/functional code of communication, combined with its mimetic and folkloristic content, thus denoting “ a semiotic system of social actions following a certain typical order, binding (and/or obligatory) for the community, intensifying the feeling of “us” and symbolising the common identity” ( Puchner 1998 34-40).

Tento příspěvek se zabývá právní úpravou divadla v postmoderním státě. Klade důraz na
aspekt sociální spravedlnosti v procesu přijímání této právní úpravy. Cílem tohto příspěvku je proto
učinění závěru o reálné možnosti či nemožnosti vytvoření a fungování sociálně spravedlivé právní
úpravy divadla, a to především v prostředí postmoderního státu.

Knowledge about "happiness" means power. For the self-portrayal of a nation, its system of values and morals, knowledge about happiness can be used and reinterpreted as an emotional-political instrument of power. How did knowledge of happiness change after 1933? In the years of crisis and war, which were marked by propaganda, persecution, the Second World War and the Holocaust, knowledge of happiness had a mass psychological function in Nazi Germany within the framework of the racist work moral „Kraft durch Freude" ("Strength through Joy") and in Switzerland in the context of the cultural-nationalist emotional policy of „geistige Landesverteidigung" ("intellectual national defence"). Isabelle Haffter shows the constructedness of happiness knowledge as an ambivalent expert and popular knowledge, which is characterised by change and continuities. The aim of the study is to uncover a research gap in the transnational history of knowledge and emotions about cultural nationalisms by means of historical case studies from the fields of politics, science and the performing arts.


Wissen über „Glück" bedeutet Macht. Zur Selbstdarstellung einer Nation, ihres Werte- und Moralsystems, kann auf dieses Wissen zurückgegriffen und als emotionspolitisches Machtinstrument genutzt werden.
Wie veränderte sich Glückswissen und dessen politische Verwendung nach 1933? In den Krisen- und Kriegsjahren, die von Propaganda, Verfolgung, dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und dem Holocaust geprägt waren, besaß Glückwissen in NS-Deutschland im Rahmen der rassistischen Arbeitsmoral „Kraft durch Freude" und in der Schweiz im Kontext der kulturnationalistischen Gefühlspolitik der „geistigen Landesverteidigung" eine massenpsychologische Funktion.
Isabelle Haffter zeigt die Konstruiertheit von Glückswissen als ein ambivalentes Experten- und Populärwissen auf, welches von Wandel und Kontinuitäten gekennzeichnet ist. Anhand historischer Fallbeispiele aus Politik, Wissenschaft und den darstellenden Künsten wird die bestehende Forschungslücke in der transnationalen Wissens- und Gefühlsgeschichte über kulturelle Nationalismen aufgedeckt.

Автор нічого не говорить про систему країни, про відсутність демократії, однак поведінка персонажів і їх висловлювання свідчать про те, що вони конфліктують із навколишньою дійсністю, а також мають внутрішній конфлікт. Тексти Доська є прикладом того, як сучасна драматургія говорить про проблеми сучасної Білорусі та її мешканців. Завдяки цьому драми молодого білоруського драматурга мають не лише місцевий, а й загальнолюдський зміст, їх легко зрозуміти в різних частинах світу.
Проведене дослідження допоможе нам краще зрозуміти специфіку білоруської «нової драми». Як бачимо, це явище дуже широке, кожен із авторів вносить свої особливості. Досько широко використовує техніку популярного останнім часом «нового реалізму», поєднаного з психологізмом, також використовує перформативні мистецтва (зображення – фотографії, музичні композиції). Завдяки цій комбінації драма набуває все більших масштабів і стає викликом для театру й актора.

The genesis of modern Greek national identity: At a first level of analysis, the topic is placed in the context of the genesis of the modern Greek national identity along the axis of Hellenism, dominated by the intellectual influences of factors external to the Greek nation. The first attempts to stage an ancient Greek drama and mainly a tragedy are related to the beginnings of the formation of national consciousness by returning to the cultural heritage of the ancestors. In the context of the formation of the independent Greek nation, interest in ancient dramas increased
and they began to be presented more and more often, burdened with the linguistic and ideological debates of the time. In the same context is posed the problem caused by the specific interests and artistic tastes of the Greek theatrical audience and its ascending to the processes of spiritual Revival preferences. The ancient Greek Theatre as a function of the cultural policy of the Greek state towards the classical heritage. At a second level of analysis, which is a kind of continuation of the first, the phases of imposing the ancient Greek theatre as a function of the cultural policy of the Greek state towards the classical heritage are traced. The focus is on the interpretation of the dramaturgy of the ancient classical authors on an open stage in the authentic context of the ancient amphitheaters: the theatre of Dionysus Eleutheros under the Acropolis, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the amphitheater in the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi with a strong emphasis on the two Delphic festivals in 1927 and 1930. Thus, in the time horizon of the 19 th – beginning of the 20 th century, two relatively parallel tendencies can be perceived in the stage models and interpretations of the ancient Greek dramatic works, in which the linguistic and ideological debates of the time are reflected. The first relatively earlier tendency is characterized by a philological approach to ancient drama as a text requiring “a correct” interpretation based on archaic grammatical and syntactic rules. From the 19th century onwards began the professional theatrical approach to the ancient dramatic text, which placed the new Greek scene in the context of the prevailing modern trends of European perspectives.

The essay brings to the attention two anecdotes that emerged from the unpublished correspondence between Edward Gordon Craig and Danilo Lebrecht, from the Spring of 1918. The first episode took shape starting from an exchange of letters of that year which, referring to some articles of Craig published in the journal, 'The Marionnette', had as their object "The Plastic Dance" by Fortunato Depero and highlighted the opinion that English director had of the young Futurist. A second anecdote (also from 1918) is told by Lebrecht and leads to the meeting between Craig and Luigi Chiarelli, the playwright and theatre critic, confirming, once again, the importance of the correspondence between the English director and the intellectual from Verona as a source of information on Edward Gordon Craig's life in Italy.

Drawing from early modern plays and treatises on the precepts and practices of the acting process, this study shows how the early modern Spanish actress subscribed to various somatic practices in an effort to prepare for a role. It provides today's reader not only another perspective to the performance aspect of early modern plays, but also a better understanding of how the woman of the theater succeeded in a highly scrutinized profession. Elizabeth Marie Cruz Petersen examines examples of comedias from playwrights such as Lope de Vega, Luis Vélez de Guevara, Tirso de Molina, and Ana Caro, historical documents, and treatises to demonstrate that the women of the stage transformed their bodies and their social and cultural environment in order to succeed in early modern Spanish theater. Women's Somatic Training in Early Modern Spanish Theater is the first full-length, in-depth study of female actors in seventeenth-century Spain. Unique in the field of comedia studies, it approaches the topic from a performance perspective, using somaesthetics as a tool to explain how an artist's lived experiences and emotions unite in the interpretation of art, reconfiguring her "self" via the transformation of habit.

Protagonisti stvaranja Dubrovačkih ljetnih igara bili su dr. Marko Fo-tez (1915. – 1976.) i dr. Branko Gavella (1885. – 1962.). »Njihov izlazak iz scene-kutije pod dubrovačke zvijezde«, kako piše Georgij Paro 1978. godine, »nužno je odredio temeljne koordinate teatra Igara, i ne samo to, već i neka osnovna načela igranja u otvorenim scenskim prostorima, koja su kasnije doživljavala mnoge korekcije i nadgradnje, ali su bila smjerodavna čak i kad se radilo o radikalno drugačijim pristupima.« (Paro, 1978: 150) Premda o tome nije mnogo pisao, nastavlja Paro, Gavella je svojim režijama tematizirao gotovo sve probleme igranja na otvorenom. Tako je primjerice režijom na taraci prividnom doslovnošću režijskog postupka postavio pred glumce, ali i gledatelje, neke posve nove mogućnosti i prob-leme: »Prostor scene širio se u prostor svijeta… čak i buka iz gruške luke postajala je na određeni način dio sveukupnog smisla predstave.« (Paro, 1978: 153) Branko Gavella takvim je postupkom naveo glumce »da dovedu u pi-tanje svoje glumačke navike i šablone i da počnu tragati za nekom novom prirodnošću, novim glumačkim izrazom…«. The correspondence between Edward Gordon Craig and Danilo Lebrecht testifies their faithful friendship and their sharing of common cultural interests, especially about theatre. From the consultation of the letters written between the years 1918 and 1923 Lebrecht’s esteem for Craig clearly emerges. The former was engaged in diffusing in Italy the theatrical theories of the latter, also writing articles in which he would defend Craig’s ideas. This essay describes three instances in which Lebrecht acted as his friend’s harbinger, with an insight on some letters that testify about three articles he wrote. These documents proof the relevant role played by Lebrecht in introducing Craig in the Italian cultural milieu during the Post World War I period.

Vortrag beim Kongress "Theater und Technik", Gesellschaft für Theaterwissenschaft, Institut für Medien- und Kulturwissenschaft der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, 08.-11.11.2018.

Der Vortrag beleuchtet Gotthold Ephraim Lessings "Matrone von Ephesus" (ca. 1740er bis frühe 1770er) und Bertolt Brechts "Sommersinfonie" (ca. 1917 bis 1922). Dabei handelt es sich jeweils um eine Fragment gebliebene Adaption des lateinischen Romans "Satyrica" von Titus Petronius Arbiter, Schiedsrichter in Geschmacksfragen am Hof von Kaiser Nero. Ausgehend vom Scheitern der beiden Theatermacher zielt der Vergleich insbesondere auf die Frage, inwiefern die "Satyrica" und ihr theatrales Potential eine Herausforderung für Theaterschaffende quer durch die Theatergeschichte darstellen. Im Rückgriff auf die altphilologische Petron-Forschung diskutiert der Vortrag deshalb zunächst die Theaternähe und Theatralität der "Satyrica", insbesondere die damit verbundene Lese- und Sprechtechnik. Beim anschließenden Vergleich der Bearbeitungen von Lessing und Brecht soll der Fokus auf den dramaturgischen Techniken und Praktiken des Entwerfens, Skizzierens und Übersetzens, sowie auf den jeweiligen medientechnologischen Kontexten liegen. Die Analyse stützt sich dabei auf die Handschriften von Lessing und auf die Notizbücher von Brecht. Insgesamt möchte der Vortrag so einen bislang wenig beachteten Bereich der römischen Antike und ihrer Rezeption in den Blick rücken, der jenseits des Höhenkamms antiker Stoffe und Theaterkulturen zu verorten ist.

Submission Deadline: 15 January 2017 Bursary Application Deadline: 22 December 2016 The Arabic Theatre Working Group of the International Federation for Theatre Research invites proposals for contributions to its forthcoming meeting at the IFTR annual conference in São Paulo, Brazil from 10 to 14 July 2017. We particularly, but not exclusively, welcome contributions that address the conference theme "Unstable Geographies: Multiple Theatricalities", which, as the organizers put it, emphasizes " the massive migrations and increasing deterritorialization of human cultures ". This topic has a strong relevance to the contemporary Arab world and its historically multi-layered inter-and intra-cultural shifts and displacments. If anything, this concern is particularly evident in the growing crises facing today's Arab and Arabo-Islamic migrant and refugee communities. This topical concern notwithstanding, it is equally evident in the historically-rich but largely under-explored theatrical practices of Arab and Muslim communities in South and Latin America.
