Hungarian linguistics

The paper aims to seek evidence for foreign models on term-formation in anatomical names. We are experiencing a “paradigm shift” in scientific communication. English is used as the international language of science, replacing Latin, the lingua franca in the Middle Ages, which has survived in scientific terminology. Could English dethrone Latin in such a conservative science as anatomy? We supply a few examples of Hungarian anatomical names applied in clinical practice originating from English models, particularly the acronym LAD in cardiac anatomy and lexical innovations in metaphors for socket of hip bone. We emphasize the importance of calques as the most effective method in term-formation.

Egy nyelv legdinamikusabb része a szókészlet, amely sokkal változékonyabb a nyelvtani rendszernél vagy a hangrendszernél. Az anyanyelvi oktatás egyik feladata megláttatni a diákokkal, hogy a nyelv nem egy stagnáló, hanem folyamatosan mozgásban lévő rendszer. A szókészlet dinamikusságának bizonyítéka az új szavak, kifejezések, jelentésárnyalatok, nyelvtani formák szüntelen megjelenése. A neologizmusokra való reflektálás helyet kap a szlovákiai magyarnyelv-tankönyvekben (Bolgár Katalin–Bukorné Danis Erzsébet: Magyar nyelv

nyelvújulásra és nyelvújításra. Tanulmányomban ezért e tankönyvi részekhez javasolnék kiegészítést mind az elméleti tananyagrész, mind pedig a feladatok, gyakorlatok bővítésével.

Aspects of the Slovak-Hungarian comparatistic morphosyntax
The aim of the publication is the comparing of Slovak and Hungarian morphosyntax
from the aspect of ethnolinguistics and linguistic relativity. Our main
interest is on the representation of the linguistic image of the world in grammar
of two typologically different languages in one language area. Our topic is
reflecting on the xenolinguistics in Slovakia: it is presented, how strange are
grammatical structures reflected by learning the other language or by translating.
The research of the linguistic image of the world is mostly focused on
the lexicon, though, morphosyntactic structures and rules let deeper discover
the logic of a language. We use these methods for discovering this logic in the
compared languages:
1. Colleting of papers on Slovak-Hungarian comparing grammar with their
presenting in longer quotations and funding the theoretical background
with their comparing with the academic and functional grammars of the
above languages.
2. With methods of language typology and relativity analysing the categories
and the word classes in Slovak and Hungarian.
3. Structural and semantic comparing is interpreted from an ethnolinguistic
aspect. Common and parallel elements of Slovak and Hungarian mental
grammar are presented from a global view of examples of the languages of
the world. In this context the signs of interference in bilingual milieu are
traced.
4. Theoretic conclusions can be used in second language acquisition and
translatology.
The fırst, theoretic chapter deals with the methods of linguistic comparison,
the categorization in languages. The theory of the “linguistic image of the world”
will be shortly presented. Further topics are the typology and its influence on
the morphematic structure of Slovak and Hungarian and the differences of
word classes as well.
The next two main chapters are about nominal and verbal phrase, where
we compare the grammatical categories and semantics of morphosyntactically
relevant word classes. These aspects show, how the structures of the
both languages work, which are the analogies, which forms are chosen from
the potential grammatical structures. Although Slovak and Hungarian show
typologically and structural differences, conclusions of semantic grammar
show, that the speakers of these languages have a similar linguistic image of
the world. Speakers of Slovak and Hungarian think about grammatical number, person, time e.g. the same way, even if the formal expression is different. There
is no such sentence structure, which would be impossible to say in one of the
researched languages, despite of the different grammatical system of casus,
e.g. There are differences in the bipolarity of verbal categories of Slovak (perfective
↔ imperfective, reflective ↔ non reflective) and of the more immanent
lexical-grammatical mixture of categories of Hungarian (Aktionsart). After comparing
the system of verbiods, the conclusion is, that the higher frequency of
non-personal verbal forms in Hungarian is a functional replacement of failing
passive constructions. The chapter abut verbs is closed with the comparing of
sentence structures on base of predication and word order.
Our conclusion is, that the linguistic image of the word is related to what
is causal, motivated in language. Not only word derivation show signs of such
motivation, also in grammar can be traced logic, transparency. These structures
are said to be “light” for learners of foreign languages. If there is no transparent,
causal, motivated structure, the phenomenon of interlingual analogy
begins to work. This is practically called “error” from a normative aspect, but
it’s a natural manifestation of the influence of different linguistic images of
worlds. The last chapter is a collection of the differences of language thinking,
different logic of speakers of Hungarian and Slovak which have consequences
on translation and language teaching.

A székely név és csoport eredete minden más, a magyarságon belül létező néprajzi csoporténál izgalmasabb kérdés.  Ennek az a magyarázata, hogy a 13. századi történeti irodalom szerint a székelyek Árpád honfoglalása idején már a Kárpát-medencében éltek, Attila király népe, sőt a hunok leszármazottai voltak. A székelykérdés tehát hagyományosan szorosan kapcsolódik a magyarság eredetének, Kárpát-medencei megtelepedésének/megtelepedéseinek időpontjához/időpontjaihoz, ezért erős emocionális töltéssel is rendelkezik.
A probléma jelentőségének megfelelő a megoldással próbálkozó nyelvészeti szakirodalom nagysága is. Ennek ismertetésétől – mivel célom nem a vita – eltekintek, helyettük hivatkozom a közelmúltban született alapos összefoglalásokra. 
Saját javaslatomra Benkő Loránd és Klima László elképzelései voltak termékenyítő hatással, amelyek egyértelműen a szó magyar képzése mellett foglalnak állást.  Az etimológia ismertetése után megpróbálom a kora Árpád-kori történeti, régészeti és antropológiai adatok, valamint a részben későbbi nyelvészeti források segítségével megvizsgálni azt a társadalomtörténeti kontextust, amelyben a székely szó megszülethetett.

A székely-magyar rovásfeliratok megfejtésében megtalálása óta nagy segítséget jelentett a nikolsburgi ábécé. A korábbi feliratok olvasatának megalkotói azonban nem vették tekintetbe, hogy a 15. század végi ábécé nincs összhangban a korábbi nyelvállapotok hangrendszerével. A tanulmányban az ősmagyar kor végének, a korai ómagyar kor elejének hangállapotához illeszkedő, a korai rovásemlékekből kimutatható grafémákat kapcsoltam a feltételezett korabeli hangokhoz. A tárgyalás során a gondolatmenet a következő szempontok szerint alakult: i) Az ősmagyar kor végének, a korai ómagyar kor elejének hangrendszere és a hozzá kapcsolható rovásgrafémák; ii) Megszűnt fonéma – eltűnt rovásgraféma; iii) Előzmény és következmény fonéma jelölése; iv) Folytatás nélküli rovásgrafémák; v) A latin betűs írás hatása. Az elemzés rámutatott arra, hogy a Róna-Tas Andrástól a 10. századra a nikolsburgi ábécéből létrehozott rovásábécé (Keletkutatás 2017/Tavasz: 5‒16) nem tükrözi a kor fonémarendszerét, így nem alkalmas arra, hogy a korszak rovásemlékeinek olvasatát a segítségével meg lehessen alkotni. [The Nikolsburg Alphabet has been a great help to decipher inscriptions written in the Székely-Hungarian Rovash script since its discovery (Rovash is the Hungarian origin word for runiform scripts). However, the authors of the readings of the earlier inscriptions did not take into consideration the differences between the alphabetical system of the late 15th-century and the the phonemic systems of the earlier language stages. This paper relates the graphemes of the early Rovash inscriptions that match the phonemic system of the late Ancient and early Old Hungarian language periods. The paper is structured by the following focus areas: i) The phonemic system of the Ancient and Old Hungarian periods and the Székely-Hungarian Rovash graphemes related to it; ii) missing phoneme – vanished grapheme; iii) indication of antecedent and resultant phonemes; iv) Székely-Hungarian Rovash graphemes without continuance; v) the influence of the Latin alphabet. The analysis demonstrates that the 10th-century Székely-Hungarian Rovash alphabet created from the Nikolsburg alphabet by András Róna-Tas (Keletkutatás 2017/Tavasz: 5‒16) does not reflect the phonemic system of the same era and therefore, cannot be used for creating readings of Székely-Hungarian Rovash inscriptions of that period.]

A thorough description of the behaviour, functions, semantic content and the part of speech relatedness or identification of morphemes called verbal prefixes (or 'igekötők' in Hungarian) poses many problems for the analyst and that not all of the problems have been solved or discussed extensively and satisfactorily and in the depth required. In our paper we would like to bridge some of the gaps related to clarifying the semantic functions and features of the prefix 'le-' ('downward-') by outlining factors such as direction, motion, lexical content, frame relatedness, metaphorization, based on and supported by a body of experimental data gained from 50 adult native speakers of Hungarian.

Linguistic Analysis of Hungarian Fungus Names

This dissertation examines the Hungarian fungus names, more specifically the folk fungus names, from a cognitive linguistic, a historical, a structural, and a language geographic aspect. On the basis of this exercise the author wishes to join those researches of the Hungarian Linguistics which analyze a semantically homogeneous word group from different linguistic points of view.
The author surveys the characteristics of folk categorization; and she determines the place of the word gomba (en. ‘Fungus’) in the linguistic world view of Hungarians. She reviews the fungus names preserved in historical works from the 16th century until the beginning of the 19th century, when the official fungus name giving appeared; and she values the different data according to their structural features. After that, she critically introduces the specialized literature that deals with some similar common name groups from a structural aspect. She categorizes the folk fungus names following the methods of István Hoffmann, who classified the Hungarian toponyms. Then she values six folk fungus names according to their language geographic features; she places the examined data on maps as well.
A historical and language geographical dictionary is compiled in the appendix of the dissertation. The dictionary contains fungus names from all the available printed sources; furthermore, the time, the place of collection and the name of the collector is given in it, too.
Folk fungus names are the topic of the dissertation, however, the author mentions some characteristics of professional mycological language and scientific fungus names as well, so that she wishes to give a complete picture of Hungarian fungus names.

Tanszékünk OTKA által támogatott regionális köznyelvi vizsgálataival párhuzamosan, 2008 nyarán kezdtem el a népi gombaneveket gyűjteni a Balaton-felvidéki Felsőörsön és Kapolcson, majd az északabbra fekvő Szentgálon és Bakonybélben. Összesen tizenkét adatközlővel beszélgettem a gombagyűjtésről és -felhasználásról, illetve 110 gombafényképet felhasználva rögzítettem az általuk ismert népi gombaneveket. A szövegeket diktafonnal vettem fel, mintegy nyolc óra felvétel készült.
Ezenkívül korábbi Veszprém megyei forrásokat, gombanévgyűjtéseket is felhasználtam. A mai és a régebbi adatokat szótárba rendeztem.

Abstract: This study concerns, from a linguistic point of view, with the Codex Clusii and the Fungorum in Pannoniis which contain spread Hungarian fungus names from the turn of the 16–17th centuries. The author favours attention especially to the Bolete’s names because these fungi are the favourite of the Őrség region even today, 400 years after the mentioned works.

A Demonstratio második kiadása (1771) számos ponton eltér az egy évvel korábbitól. E bővítések érdekesen tükrözik a korszellemet és Sajnovics főnökének, Hellnek a terveit. A bővítések három típusba sorolhatók: a megkezdett vizsgálatok mennyiségi bővítése, érvek az elmélet elfogadtatása mellett, Hell szerepének nyomatékosítása. A későbbiekben Hell a teljes szerzőséget magáénak követelte, Sajnovicsot részfeladatok önállótlan végrehajtójának nevezve. Joggal tehette-e? Ennek eldöntésére megvizsgáltuk Hell két konkrét nyelvészeti elemzését: a kínai rokonítást és a Kar-jelia-kérdést. Megállapítható, hogy ezek igen messze állnak a Demonstratio egészének. nyelvészeti szemléletétől, és más adatok is Sajnovics tényleges munkáját mutatják. Így feltevésünk szerint az ötletet Hellnek, de az elvi és gyakorlati igazolást (és ez bizonyult időtállónak) Sajnovicsnak lehet tulajdonítani.

Very few people know that a possibility of reconstructing protolanguages or protoforms was probably first suggested as early as in the 16th century by Miechowita while discussing the origin of the name of Hungarians and that of Yugra. Miechowita’s “Treatise on the Two Sarmatias” was once an extremely important source of knowledge of the geography and history of East Europe. Although much was written on its significance in correcting more or less unlikely information concerning these subjects his linguistic material was actually ignored. The aim of this study is to examine what was known about East European languages in the early sixteenth century.

Absztrakt

A tanulmány arra tesz kísérletet, hogy felvázolja a grammatikák néhány kapcsolódási pontját a korabeli külföldi munkákhoz illetve egymáshoz, vagyis a családfájukat. Terjedelmi okok miatt elsősorban a XVII. századi munkákról lesz szó, egyes esetekben természetesen kitekintve a későbbi továbbélésekre is.
Az első rész a grammatikák általános szellemi hátterét mutatja be: a közös magyar grammatikai hagyományt, ezen belül a héber grammatikai leírás adaptálását, illetve a német nyelvészeti hatást. A második rész a korai grammatikák egymáshoz való kapcsolódását követi nyomon.

A hashtag is a type of label or metadata tag primarily used on social networking websites and mi-croblogging services. It makes it easier for users to find content of the same topic. Hashtags are created by inserting the hash character (#) in front of a word or phrase (without spaces). The paper presents the process and results of a thought experiment: it aims analyzing the relationship of a new text form (which can be considered as a minimal text), the hashtag and phrasemes. I assumed that hashtags bear the most distinctive characteristics of phrasemes, and they represent a new type of them. After the thorough review of the relevant literature, definitions and characteristics of phrasemes, I concluded that although there are signs of stability of the components of certain hashtags, and a stronger degree of pragmatic and a weaker degree of lexical constraint can be observed in them, and they have common characteristics with the so called situation sentences and collocations, but in general nor real semantic constraints neither real lexical stability (lex-icalization) can be detected in hashtags. To the question in the title of the paper (Hashtags as new phrasemes?) a negative answer can be given, for the time being, but it doesn't exclude that in the future there may be hashtags with more explicit phraseme characteristics.

“Like all educational practice, bilingual education is inextricably bound up with the socio-political context in which it arises and the purposes it serves” (Lo Bianco 2007: 47).

Ruiz (1984) proposes three basic perspectives towards language and its role in society as well as how it influences language planning in different situations: language as a problem, language as a right and language as a resource (Ruiz 1984: 15).

• Language as a problem: For some people, bilingualism and especially bilingual education may have negative effects within the community causing disunity, ethnic problems and political turmoil.

• Language as a right: Some other people feel that prejudices and discrimination need to be erased. These prejudices would include the linguistic ones. According to this orientation all people must have the right to learn and use their native language.

• Language as a resource: For a third group, bilingualism and bilingual education can be an asset for promoting national unity, since different linguistic groups within the country will be able to communicate with each other. Furthermore, bilingual education can empower people and communities to develop international relations.


As Baker (2011: 374) points out bilingual education can be perceived as “both part of the solution and part of the problem of achieving national unity, diversity or unity in diversity.”

Following the premises above, this presentation will prove that there is a political ideology behind different models of bilingual education using real cases in three different countries:

• Hungarian bilingual education in Slovakia: language as a problem
• Occitan bilingual education in the Aran Valley: language as a right
• Russian bilingual education in Kazakhstan: language as a resource

The analysis of vowel realisations in two villages from Háromszék
(Trei Scaune)
A new direction in dialectological research is the study of recorded data with the help of formant analysis. In the case of Hungarian dialects form Háromszék (Trei Scaune) – based on a previous research conducted in 2013 – differences can be identified in the phoneme systems of the dialects spoken in the different research locations.
In my study I investigate the phoneme systems of the dialects spoken in several such locations using recently gathered dialectological audio materials.

This Excel file provides a DRAFT list of Proto-Uralic basic lexicon, incl. reflexes of some proto-forms (those with a green background; missing reflexes will be added in a future release).
Its key sources are D. Sinor's (ed.) "The Uralic Languages" and K. Rédei's UEW (see dedicated sheet for details).
This draft database is intended as a stepping stone for researchers who want to try and understand the origin of Uralic languages by comparing their basic lexicon against other languages and language families.

A romani eredetű szavak használata terén a magyar nyelvben több tendenciát is látunk, egyes szavak eltűnnek, míg mások divatossá válnak – akár természetes és folyamatos nyelvi folyamatok révén, akár a média hatásának következtében. Azt is látjuk, hogy különbség figyelhető meg aközött, hogy egy szót valaki aktívan használ, vagy csak passzívan ismer, mindez pedig nem független annak jelentésétől. Egyes szavak elterjedése kifejezetten helyhez és életkorhoz köthető, míg mások általánosan ismertek életkortól és területtől függetlenül. Nemcsak a szavak ismertsége és használata múlhat ezeken a tényezőkön, de jelentéseik terén is komoly különbségeket fedezhetünk fel. A határon túli és a magyarországi magyar anyanyelvűek beszéde között eltérés figyelhető meg a romani jövevényszavak terén is, ugyanakkor belső területi különbségek is megfigyelhetők. Ezen kívül bizonyítást nyert, hogy ezek a szavak vagy nem tekinthetők ún. luxusjövevényszónak, vagy a luxusjövevényszavak kategóriájának definícióját szükséges pontosítani. Számos szó használati gyakorisága pedig azt támasztja alá, hogy sem a szleng ismerete, sem annak használata nem kizárólagosan a fiatalok beszédére jellemző, ugyanis ez szavanként és jelentésenként is változó.

A magyar nyelvben az igekötők számának növekedése és rendszerük kiépülése valószínűleg összefüggésben áll az igeidők számának csökkenésével. A jelen munkában arra próbálunk választ találni, milyen kapcsolat van az igekötők és az aspektus, illetve akcióminőség-kifejezés között.

A vizsgálatot a  2006-ban kezdődött Veszprém megyei regionális köznyelvi gyűjtés keretében végeztem el. A tanulmány kiindulópontját a földrajzi köznevekre irányuló tizennégy kérdés válaszai képezték (277–290). Ezek alapján igyekszem bemutatni, hogy
a megye településein milyen földrajzi köznevek ismeretesek és használatosak,
ezeknek milyen a területi elterjedtségük. Először a 282., a ’kisebb vízállás, esetleg
vízzel teli kátyú’ jelentésű szavakra irányuló kérdés válaszait elemeztem. Ezek
közül egy földrajzi köznévi lexémát – a kálistát – tágabb kontextusban is megvizsgáltam:
nyelvtörténeti-etimológiai, nyelvföldrajzi, dialektológiai és névtani
szempontból. Munkám és adataim forrásául a kutatás kérdőíves anyaga
mellett a történeti és jelenkori helynév szolgált.

This handout presents the ways of marking countability in Hungarian, i.e. mass/count and individual level sortal classifiers. I suggest that a typology must include languages which exhibit both a lexical mass/count distinction and individual level sortal classifiers. In particular, languages in which classifiers can be both functional heads and sortals derived from count nouns.

Most sociolinguistic analyses of migrants draw heavily on concepts like community and diasporic identity. However, the modes and ways of migration have been going through alteration processes, and that is a major motivation to apply new approaches in investigating the intersection of migration and language. This paper addresses the issue of Hungarian Americans’ narratives about their multilingual identity and life situation with special attention to employment, linguistic repertoire, contacts with other migrants, and communication with people in the country of origin.

Influence of language contacts on the linguistic image of the world

The paper deals with the interaction of language contacts and the linguistic image of the world. The analysed languages: Slovak, German, Hungarian with some references on Romanian. Our aim is the description of the influence of the dynamics of the lexemes on the linguistic image of the world in Slovak and Hungarian. Language varieties in contact zones develop new semantic components of lexemes, the morphology is also affected by interferences.
All these fields can be researched the best way with comparing the structure of languages and with analysing the language contacts. In this paper linguistic relativity, lexical motivation and grammatical interference are brought under one roof as a theoretical basis. We deal with the question, where is the border between structure of languages and linguistic image of the wold. Can morphologic typology used as an example of thinking? On lexical level we involve the theory of motivation in the theory of the linguistic image of the world.
We work with own research outputs of the language usage of Slovaks in Hungary, Hungarians in Slovakia, but also use outputs of other researchers (e.g. A. Benő’s of the Hungarian language usage in contact with Romanian) and try to make a complete view of them. Teaching experience of German to Hungarians and Slovaks, Slovak to Hungarians, Hungarian to Slovaks is also a background of the research.

A XVII. századi magyar nyelvtanírók két hagyományra támaszkodtak: a klasszikus latin grammatikára és a latin nyelvű héber grammatikára. Ezek kategóriáit és terminusait használták és fejlesztették tovább a magyar szerzők. Az előadás példákat hoz a két hagyomány terminusainak kialakulására és változására, majd részletesen vizsgálja a magyar grammatikák szókincsének változatosságát.

We summarize an ongoing series of experiments in English, French, German and Hungarian, investigating the exhaustivity of clefts or cleft-like constructions in all four languages. Data supports the hypothesis that clefts do have an exhaustive component to their meaning, but that the exhaustive component is not at issue.

This paper addresses a hot topic of Hungarian syntactic research, viz. the treatment of “discontinuous” constructions involving auxiliaries. The case is made for a projective dependency grammar (DG) account built on the notions of rising and catenae (Groß and Osborne, 2009). Additionally, the semantic basis of the dependency created by rising is described with a view to analogy and constructional meaning.

The aim of this study is to define linguistic gender[lessness], with particular reference in the latter part of the article to Hungarian, and to show why it is a feminist issue. I will discuss the [socio]linguistics of linguistic gender in three types of languages, those, like German and the Romance languages, among others, which possess grammatical gender, languages such as English, with only pronominal gender (sometimes misnamed ‘natural gender’), and languages such as Hungarian and other Finno-Ugric languages, as well as many other languages in the world, such as Turkish and Chinese, which have no linguistic or pronomial gender, but, like all languages, can make lexical gender distinctions. While in a narrow linguistic sense linguistic gender can be said to be afunctional, this does not take into account the ideological ramifications in gendered languages of the “leakage” between gender and sex[ism], while at the same time so-called genderless languages can express societal sexis...

This paper provides an analysis of Hungarian sortal classifiers, shedding light on the complex interplay between classifiers, plurality and kind interpretation in the language. We build on Schvarcz & Rothstein's (2017) approach to the mass/count distinction, providing further evidence for noun flexibility. We show that Num+N and Num+CL+N constructions have different interpretations; in particular, kind interpretation tells the two apart. We provide evidence against plural-as-a-classifier (Dékány 2011) and number-neutrality (Erbach et al. 2019) views and argue that classifier optionality can be accounted for by the predictions the Nominal Mapping Parameter (Chierchia 1998b) makes with respect to bare singular nouns. We claim that Hungarian nominals are born as kind-denoting expressions which then can undergo a kind-to-predicate shift explicitly triggered by a sortal individuating classifier. We analyze classifiers in Hungarian as functional operators on kinds of type ⟨ , ⟨ , ⟩⟩, which apply to kind denoting terms generating instantiations of that kind.
