Le présent article étudie les dispositifs de certains romans graphiques à la lumière des concepts anthropologiques afin d’illustrer leur potentiel en tant qu’outil au service de la rencontre et de la contextualisation du regard de l’Étranger. Nous proposerons d’abord une brève mise en contexte théorique des mémoires graphiques, en plus de les confronter
à l’ethnographie classique et aux supports filmiques de l’anthropologie visuelle. Nous aborderons par la suite la production de savoir ethnographique ainsi que les mécanismes de représentation de la figure de l’Étranger à l’intérieur de deux documents articulés autour du témoignage, de l’observation participante et de la réflexivité : Maus: A Survivor’s Tale (1986 et 1991) d’Art Spiegelman et Palestine (2001) de Joe Sacco.

The author introdusces reportage as a general genere, and then discusses comics reportage in relation to both other forms of this genere and to fiction comics. The roles of the author and the narrator are discussed throught several examples. Finally, the material aspect of reportage comisc is presend as an important componet in making them more "realistic".

Joe Sacco’s almost universally lauded comics frequently reveal issues and people that are overlooked or misrepresented in western media. Whether these are Palestinians, African immigrants in Malta, or Indian villagers, Sacco takes readers on a visual and narrative journey to locations that are disregarded. Given the similarities between Sacco’s consistent modus operandi of illustrating and voicing the global subaltern and the core principles of postcolonial studies, it is odd that a postcolonial approach to Sacco has not been developed. Whereas comic authors such as Marjane Satrapi and
Art Spiegelman have received many such readings, a critical blind spot remains in this regard to Sacco as his works have not been brought into conversation with the fundamental principles of postcolonial studies at length. By examining Sacco’s comics ‘The Unwanted’, Palestine and ‘Kushinagar’, the current article redresses this oversight by contextualising Sacco’s work in relation to postcolonial literary studies. Joe
Sacco’s work troubles readers by confronting them with representations of subjects against which they have constructed institutional barriers, and this article similarly
troubles the way we view Sacco’s texts.

A presente dissertação de mestrado aborda a história em quadrinhos e suas ferramentas gráfico-narrativas quando aplicadas a finalidades jornalísticas. A análise da obra de Joe Sacco – pioneiro dos livros-reportagem em quadrinhos – é feita a partir do estudo de algumas passagens de Palestina. Para situar o jornalismo em quadrinhos em uma perspectiva histórica, são analisados o surgimento do jornalismo ilustrado em meados do Século XIX (sobretudo na obra de Constantin Guys) e reportagens em quadrinhos anteriores à fotografia impressa, como as de Angelo Agostini. Algumas obras de outros autores imediatamente anteriores e posteriores a Sacco também são estudadas, mostrando que o jornalismo em quadrinhos é um gênero em expansão e em desenvolvimento. Também proponho que a fotorreportagem clássica seja entendida como uma narrativa gráfico-sequencial, isto é, de natureza quadrinística. Como exemplo, analiso, entre outras, uma fotorreportagem da revista O Cruzeiro. Este estudo conclui-se com algumas considerações sobre as consequências do jornalismo em quadrinhos tanto no campo do quadrinho quanto no do jornalismo.

Joe Sacco’s graphic novels are often described as comics journalism,
even though many of them evidence a distinctly historical method.
This essay discusses the development of an engagement with the past
in Sacco’s oeuvre and asserts that Safe Area Gorazde is the first longform work where he fully deploys journalism and history together. A
close reading of that work demonstrates that these two approaches are
not combined into a synthesis as many scholars often assume. Instead,
journalism and history largely unfold as separate modes of discourse
alongside one another and as such are doubly performative: they
transform our awareness of the present as well as our understanding
of the past. Sacco was born on Malta but his family soon moved to
Australia and then to the United States, where he studied journalism in
college. He became involved with alternative comics in the 1980s.
While travelling during the early 1990s, he visited the West Bank and
Gaza Strip, and his experience there led to the work Palestine, which
gained him critical attention. That work and the others that followed
established him as a "comics journalist."

Nos adentramos en las posibilidades de la novela gráfica como una plataforma discursiva de crítica social que reactualiza y tensa el otrora paradigma del arte comprometido. A partir de las ideas de Georges Didi-Huberman en Ante el tiempo, iremos desarrollando el análisis sobre la "modernidad del anacronismo", la funcionalidad de la "imagen-combate" y la efectividad de la "imagen-aura" en la propuesta de Joe Sacco. La problemática central del estudio se debate en la "lucha" entre palabra e imagen; esta última, en tanto dispositivo de acceso a la experiencia límite para reconstruir la memoria histórica del acontecimiento.

Edward Said's praise of comics journalist Joe Sacco as a kind of “Marlow” (from Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness) is an analogy that reminds us of the contextualization of current affairs graphic novels in other media. While scholars and laypeople alike have praised serious comics and animated works for their capacity to get readers interested in “the horror, the horror” (iconic words of Heart of Darkness), the failure of such works to “translate” across diverse reading publics attests to the imperfections of conveying traumatic stories with drawings and words. Said's own earlier writing on Heart of Darkness helps to qualify his appraisal of Marlow-like narrations of the forgotten peoples of the world. In Culture and Imperialism (1993), Said explains that author Conrad (through Marlow) ingeniously accomplishes the tragic exposition of European imperialism in “two visions.” First, Conrad acknowledges that his readers (Marlow's “listeners”) are located “in a particular time and in a specific place,” and second, Conrad permits Marlow to use “arabesque meditations” of ideas, and alternating blunt and evasive language, to capture the unrelenting journey of European imperial mastery (Said 1993:23).

This colloquium paper is an attempt to reflect my thoughts on stories, and telling thereof using visual sequential art as the media. It also briefly discusses my understanding of the art form and its parallel evolution over time, in dispersed locations on the face of Earth, sometimes citing a few examples to illustrate the point, and at other times quoting the exemplars of the field to suggest the influence they had on ideas and perceptions of the followers, here mostly being the comic book readers and artists. The paper also towards the end opines on the current surge of graphic novels in the popular yet not so mainstream readership, India being the context.
Following is the sequenced outline of this colloquium, yet the subsections can be read on their own, irrespective of the order; coherence being subject to the familiarity of the readers with the media of sequential art.

This article looks at instances where creators of nonfiction comics insert themselves into their works via avatar characters. Drawing on Bill Nichols's "modes of documentary film," the paper discusses instances of author avatars in the history of nonfiction comics from Henry Kiyama's 1931 Four Immigrants Manga to Joe Sacco's first-person comics journalism in Palestine.

Although comic book characters can age, their memory from one date to another is not threatened by oblivion, or even by a deterioration of faculties that simply does not exist in the imaginary limbo of the white background of the page – a place which, like the human subconscious, is immune to the idea of death. In the comic panel, as on the stone walls of prehistoric cave paintings, beings are immortal and rise up through the mineralized lightness of a fabulous universe. Unlike cinema, where the screen can restore the movement of bodies and transform them into specters, into figures of absence, the comic book lacks a time of its own, a reality imposed before the camera lens to confirm the tragic irreversibility of the word and the gesture. The aerial nature of the comic is characterized by the simultaneous presence of every panel, of all times at once. Consequently, the great Proustian phantom that looms over cinema, the impossibility of retrieving the layers of a withering memory, amnesia, turns on the page of the comic into its opposite: memory in excess, hypermnesia and its correlative, the centrality of the time traveler. How, then, is history and personal memory represented in comic books? By examining the work of Milton Caniff, Enki Bilal, Winsor McCay, Joe Sacco, Art Spiegelmen and Guibert and Lefevere I propose in this book chapter to explore the relationship between personal memory and history in the comic book, and offer a comparative reading of these texts with the work of filmmakers like Alexander Sokurov and Jean-Luc Godard.

This article is devoted to discussing the meaning and function of the depiction of war in graphic novels and its place in the creation of collective memory and historical truth. This proposed perspective is complementary to the study of armed conflict as conducted by political, security and legal sciences. The paper’s main theme is the history of the siege of Sarajevo and the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as portrayed in Joe Kubert’s graphic novel Fax from Sarajevo. The study has been conducted in light of the war image theory, proposed by Susan Sontag in Regarding the Pain of Others. In some instances an additional graphic novel was invoked - Joe Sacco’s Safe Area Goražde: The War in Eastern Bosnia 1992–1995 – to indicate significant correlations in narrative structure. Lastly, the article underlines the place and role of the reporter in visual discourse related to armed conflict.

This book mobilises the concept of kitsch to investigate the tensions around the representation of genocide in international graphic novels that focus on the Holocaust and the genocides in Armenia, Rwanda, and Bosnia. In response to the predominantly negative readings of kitsch as meaningless or inappropriate, this book offers a fresh approach that considers how some of the kitsch strategies employed in these works facilitate an affective interaction with the genocide narrative. These productive strategies include the use of the visual metaphors of the animal and the doll figure and the explicit and excessive depictions of mass violence. The book also analyses where kitsch still produces problems as it critically examines depictions of perpetrators and the visual and verbal representations of sexual violence. Furthermore, it explores how graphic novels employ anti-kitsch strategies to avoid the dangers of excess in dealing with genocide. The Representation of Genocide in Graphic Novels will appeal to those working in comics-graphic novel studies, popular culture studies, and Holocaust and genocide studies.

At the beginning of the 21st century, comics are a medium ‘on the rise’ in scholarship and in schools. This collection of essays, which emerged from a graduate student conference at TU Dortmund University, demonstrates their immense medial, artistic, and cultural potential. Authors from different academic perspectives - Applied Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Narratology, and Postcolonial Studies - take readers on an engaging trip through the world of contemporary comic books ranging from widely popular series to exclusive avant-garde auteur works.

O termo ‘jornalismo em quadrinhos’ é bastante recente, mas Agostini já fazia reportagens em HQ no Séc. XIX. E as relações entre quadrinhos e jornal são ainda muito mais amplas, profundas e duradouras. Uma fotorreportagem é, na verdade, uma reportagem em fotonovela. A caricatura e a charge são reportagens gráficas. A reconstituição gráfico-sequencial de crimes, o infográfico, o mapa cronológico e até a publicidade utilizam recursos quadrinísticos. Do outro lado, muitos heróis de quadrinhos são jornalistas (Tintin, Homem-Aranha, Super-Homem). A página de jornal é presença constante nas HQs. O folhetim literário nasceu nos jornais e foi determinante para a evolução dos quadrinhos seriados modernos. E no jornal, assim como na HQ, o objeto do discurso (no jornal, o cotidiano) é dividido em blocos (as matérias) que são justapostos nas páginas. Ambos são diagramas espaço-temporais.

O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o Jornalismo em Quadrinhos, estilo de produção jornalística recente que une as técnicas de montagem de reportagens com o grafismo das histórias em quadrinhos. Com atenção a detalhes e uso de práticas como as entrevistas, o registro fotográfico e a análise de documentação, os quadrinhos – tradicionalmente associados com fábulas, super-heróis e outros devaneios infanto-juvenis – são tão válidos para a produção jornalística quanto o vídeo, o áudio ou a escrita. Atente para o fato de que não se objetiva provar uma dita superioridade dos quadrinhos ou ignorar suas limitações – é difícil pensar, por exemplo, num jornal diário com todas as notícias no formato de quadrinhos, devido em grande parte à demora com que sua parte artística, o trabalho do desenho em si, é montada. O que se pretende nessa monografia é simplesmente mostrar que os quadrinhos devem ser vistos sem preconceitos como mais uma mídia que serve ao propósito de enriquecer e aumentar a abrangência da produção jornalística. Para tanto, depois de realizada revisão bibliográfica – com destaque para os pensamentos de Muniz Sodré e Luiz Gonzaga Motta sobre narrativa -, serão analisadas as obras Notas Sobre Gaza, reportagem em quadrinhos de Joe Sacco, maior referência no gênero; e a brasileira Juventude: Tempo de Crescer, de Augusto Paim (texto) e Ana Luiza Goulart Koehler (arte), além da série de reportagens publicadas na seção Jornalismo em Quadrinhos da Revista Fórum, de autoria de CarlosCarlos(texto) e Alexandre de Maio(arte). Argumentamos que a linguagem dos quadrinhos usa de recursos narrativos que, ainda que não imediatamente reconhecidos como passíveis de serem usados no Jornalismo, são mais uma ferramenta para a construção do real que é a base mesmo das notícias e reportagens mais tradicionais.

Set against the devastating floods of 2008 in the Kosi region of North Bihar, India, 'The Raft of Hyacinth' is a 24-page graphic narrative done in pen and ink that explores the medium of comic books to tell story of interiors of the oft-neglected region – almost cut off with time and space, as if still tethered to the feudal times. The project attempts to strike at the socio-economic problems that are the underlying cause of the prevalent crime in the region.

As a first step, a set of people of the affected area were interviewed to recollect their memories of the time, which was used to draw inspiration for the final story, which took rounds of reviews and editing. It was followed by extensive research to understand the nuances of the medium, the folklore, and stereotypes of the region, etc. finally moving onto scripting, character development, paneling, review, and final artwork until it was digitized to be printed.

This is a documentation of the work stated above carried out in the year 2016 and it was submitted for partial fulfillment of requirements for the Undergraduate Diploma Jury at DJ Academy of Design, Coimbatore, India and consequently for the award of Diploma. It documents the process of the design project undertaken. The project generally is expected to extend from synopsis, research, conceptualization to mock-up and finally to prototyping. In this case, the final output was a 24-page graphic-narrative booklet.

• Opera fondativa del graphic journalism, Palestine di Joe Sacco non si offre ai lettori come tentativo di imparziale resoconto del conflitto israelo-palestinese, ma come reportage nel quale l'autore, narratore e protagonista media la rappresentazione degli eventi con la propria esperienza e con la propria visione. L'articolo analizza l'opera di Sacco osservando come una stessa persona, storicamente determinata, agisca ai diversi livelli narratologici della storia e del discorso e insieme si costituisca come autore dell'opera. Nelle sue parole e nei suoi disegni il lettore osserva le diverse manifestazioni della sua coscienza e il mutamento della sua consapevolezza politica dal momento dell'esperienza sul campo a quelli successivi del racconto e della raffigurazione. La problematicità che ne deriva sollecita il lettore a prendere posizione rispetto al conflitto e insieme a rivedere criticamente la rappresentazione che ne offrono i media.

Abstract • Joe Sacco's Palestine, the first example of modern graphic journalism, is not conceived as an impartial report of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Instead, it is a reportage where the author, being at the same time narrator and main character, represents certain events in the light of his personal experience and vision. The article offers a narratological analysis of Sacco's work, showing that a single non-fictional person acts at the different levels of story and discourse while at the same time constituting himself as the author of the work. In his words and drawings, the reader is able to observe different manifestations of Sacco's conscience and the evolution of his political awareness, from ground-based experience to its narration and representation. The reader is thus compelled to take a stand about the conflict, and at the same time to critically evaluate the narrative provided by the media.

This article advances a three-fold argument in an equal number of sections. The first and most concise part presents a critical introduction to Alain Badiou’s philosophy of art for a scholarly field, that of comics studies, that has rarely engaged with his thought to this date. This is followed, at somewhat greater length, by a re-thinking of the ontological and formal specificity of comics. I contend that comics are constituted by a visual ontology of subtraction, both with regard to the single panel and a compositional space characterized by a constitutive de-stabilization of time and meaning. The final section fleshes out these theoretical propositions to argue against the reduction of Joe Sacco’s graphic journalism to an ethics of witnessing and understand his comics as a form of what Badiou has recently termed “militant art”, the artistic formalization of a political novelty.

:Esse trabalho tem como finalidade compreender os indícios das táticas e estratégias representadas pelo jornalista estadunidense Joe Sacco em sua visita aos territórios ocupados da Cirsjordânia e da Faixa de Gaza. Como fonte de pesquisa, adotamos a história em quadrinhos “Palestine”, produzida por Joe Sacco, jornalista estadunidense, referente a sua viagem aos territórios ocupados entre 1991 e 1992. O objeto de estudo está pautado nas representações do jornalista estadunidense sobre o conflito entre os populares palestinos e as Forças de Defesa de Israel (FDI) no início da Intifada. Para tanto, as noções de táticas e estratégias são apropriadas em nossa pesquisa por meio do trabalho do historiador francês Michel de Certeau, e o conceito de representação do também historiador francês Roger Chartier como elemento teórico. Para isso, tentaremos observar que antes de produzir “Palestine” como fruto de suas estratégias, Sacco apropriou-se de trabalhos de Noam Chosmky e Edward Said que o influenciaram diretamente em seu trabalho antes de viajar para a Palestina no final de 1991. A apropriação desses trabalhos deram bases a suas críticas ao jornalismo estadunidense e o direcionamento parcial a causa israelense. Além disso, outro indício apropriado por Sacco é o modelo imperialista e colonizador que Israel executa nos territórios ocupados após 1967. Mediante essa perspectiva, Sacco salienta a necessidade de produzir seu trabalho por meio do ponto de vista palestino do o conflito iniciado em 1987, denominado de Primeira Intifada Palestina. As estratégias utilizadas pelo jornalista são observadas no processo de produção de seu trabalho. Sendo “Palestine” uma História em Quadrinhos, utilizamos como métodos o trabalho do quadrinista estadunidense Will Eisner para compreendermos melhor a linguagem das HQ’s.

A ocupação israelense dos territórios palestinos teve início com as imigrações de judeus, a criação oficial do Estado de Israel e os ataques às aldeias palestinas, em 1948. Com esse advento, iniciou-se o processo de limpeza étnica, que visou expulsar a população local a partir de ataques, do agravamento intencional das condições materiais de existência dessas pessoas, e posteriormente, contou com a tentativa de apagamento sistemático dessa população da história oficial do Estado ocupante. Esta monografia pretende compreender como o processo iniciado em 1948, desdobrou-se durante os períodos posteriores, nos conflitos árabes-israelenses; nas relações de Israel com os Estados Unidos e com demais Estados árabes; e na Primeira Intifada, iniciada em 1987, que perdurou durante a época em que os materiais iniciais da fonte deste trabalho, a reportagem em quadrinhos Palestina (2011), foram elaborados originalmente, entre 1991 e 1992. Para tanto, a análise desta fonte será realizada por meio dos elementos estéticos e textuais inseridos em seu material e pela percepção de como essa obra dialoga com o contexto de sua produção e com os aspectos não-ficcionais que integram a sua narrativa.

O objetivo desse trabalho consiste em compreender a visão de mundo do jornalista estadunidense Joe Sacco em seu trabalho “Notas sobre Gaza” após o 11 de setembro nos Estados Unidos. Em 2002, depois de trabalhar em conjunto com Chris Hedge para a revista Harpers, Sacco retorna para a Palestina e produz “Notas sobre Gaza”. Em suas páginas, o jornalista representou os ataques aos vilarejos de Khen Younis e Rafah em 1956 que deixou mais de 270 mortos do lado palestino. A hipótese norteadora dessa pesquisa leva em consideração a possibilidade da existência de discursos diversos além da posição midiática dos grandes meios de comunicação acerca à “Guerra ao Terror” e a necessidade de retomar os eventos de 1956 na Palestina como maneira de repensar as consequências da guerra contra o terrorismo iniciada pelos Estados Unidos e Israel no Oriente Médio. Para isso, o conceito de representações do historiador francês, Roger Chartier, colabora para a compreensão de sistemas de representações produzidos por grupos distintos que visam em suas estratégias comunicarem de maneira eficaz, ou seja, que seja favorável as suas ideologias e a legitimação de suas ações. Sendo “Notas sobre Gaza” fonte e objeto de nossa pesquisa, compreendemos também que o trabalho de Sacco não é único e muito menos um grande trabalho inovador, mas que a sua produção só foi possível mediante as várias camadas de outros trabalhos acadêmicos e jornalísticos que exprimiam as mais variadas representações acerca dos atentados e dos desdobramentos que as ações estadunidense de “Guerra ao Terror” desencadearam na Palestina.

‘Getuigenis in vertaling’, zo luidde de titel van het symposium dat op 28 november 2017 plaatsvond aan het departement Vertalen, Tolken en Communicatie van de Universiteit Gent. Onderzoeksgroepen CLIV (Centrum voor Literatuur in Vertaling – UGent en VUB), CERES (Centre for Reception Studies – KU Leuven) en CMSI (Cultural Memory Studies Initiative – UGent) sloegen de handen in mekaar met de Stichting Auschwitz en brachten een reeks onderzoekers en vertalers samen rond het thema. Het opzet was om het belang, de impact en de ethische dimensie van vertaling te bespreken voor literaire en niet-literaire getuigenissen over politiek geweld.
Dit thematische dossier bevat een selectie van academische papers en een weergave van het forumgesprek met vijf vertalers van Holocaustliteratuur. Samen met het themanummer ‘Translating Testimony’ in Getuigen (Spiessens en Toremans, 2016) vormt het een tweeluik.

Through this article, we focus our attention on the world views of the
American journalist Joe Sacco on Palestinian women during their trip to the Occupied Territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The period
corresponding to her trip to Palestine relates to the events of the First
Palestine Intifada which began in December 1987. The guiding hypothesis of our work is to analyze how Sacco represented Palestinian women in the process of producing Palestine. We take into account the effort that the journalist offers in reporting a partial vision in favor of Palestine and the initiative to give voice to a people that the author himself considers to have no space in the western media. For this, we consider the concept of representations of the French historian Roger Chartier as a theoretical framework for our analyzes. As a methodological instrument, we have guided our observations to the work of Edivaldo Pereira Lima on the bookreport

Two quotes from literary critics form the basis for our examination of a range of literary depictions of human cruelty. Philosopher/literary critic Theodor Adorno wrote that “writing poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric” and critic Lawrence Langer responded to this comment by asking “How should art – how can art – represent the inexpressibly inhuman suffering of the victims, without doing an injustice to that suffering? […] There is something disagreeable, almost dishonorable, in the conversion of the suffering of victims into works of art.” We will read fiction that attempts artistic representation of several different instances of atrocity – the white settlement of South African hinterland, the Stalinist Gulag, the Nazi Holocaust, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, the Partition of India, the massacre in Sabra and Shatila, the war in Bosnia, the Hutu/Tutsi violence in Rwanda, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks – and use them to articulate our own responses to Adorno and Langer. Our goal is neither simply to empathize with the victims nor to rank comparatively the horrors of the historical events depicted, but rather to contemplate both the difficulties and the values – immediate and enduring – of applying the creative impulse in the wake of immense destruction.

Through a close reading of Joe Sacco's Paying the Land (2020), a graphic novel about the struggle of the Dene people in Canada's Northwestern territories, this article shows how Sacco effects a "peripheral realism" that draws the systemic continuities of different phases of colonial modernity into view. The article then describes Sacco's "terrestrial realism," which combines his peripheral realism with the dialectical participation of the reader as well. Finally, in a concluding theoretical discussion, I consider how the practice of drawing allows us to think through a response to modernity's combined and uneven development that is both materialist and decolonial at the same time. Although the former typically insists on singularity and totality, and the latter promotes a contradictory plurality, the peripheral and terrestrial realisms of Paying the Land suggest a way for theorists of world literature to find a point of methodological solidarity that is both in and against capitalist modernity's gravitational force.

This draft is the syllabus for a 200 level course (3 credits) at the Collins Living Learning Center of Indiana University (IU), Bloomington, which I developed as doctoral candidate in the summer of 2001; I never taught this course.

The course was designed to double as a topics-course in intercultural issues and as an introduction to Islam, as it approached American cultural narratives at the beginning of the G. W. Bush presidency through their representations of Muslims.  The primary sources ranged from Arabic and Persian literature, which are bestsellers in their English translations, to Hollywood films, comics, and science fiction.  They were accompanied with a selection of theoretical readings about semiotics.  Field trips to a mosque in Bloomington and the Islamic art exhibit in the IU Art Museum provided opportunities for a reality check on the fictional representations of Muslims and Islamic culture.

O objetivo desse trabalho consiste em analisar as representações do jornalista estadunidense Joe Sacco em seu livro-reportagem publicado no gênero História em Quadrinhos intitulado “Notas sobre Gaza”. Em “Notas sobre Gaza”, Sacco viaja para Palestina entre 2001 e 2002, concomitante com os acontecimentos posteriores aos ataques contra as Torres Gêmeas no 11 de setembro e discorre sobre a Guerra de Suez de 1956 e os ataques cometidos pelo exército israelense contra as aldeias de Khan Younis e Rafah no mesmo período. A hipótese norteadora desse trabalho considera que, apesar de Joe Sacco descrever acontecimentos de 1956, sua narrativa contém elementos que criticam e colocam em exposição a repressão efetuada pelo Estado Israel contra o povo palestino durante o período de produção de seu trabalho (2002-2009). Para conseguir responder a questão, utilizaremos como aporte teórico o conceito de representações do historiador francês Roger Chartier. Metodologicamente, flexionaremos a análise de Jean Starobinski para os estudos de literatura para a análise das Histórias em Quadrinhos enquanto suporte material livresco e juntamente analisaremos elementos da linguagem própria das artes sequenciais baseados em trabalhos como de Will Eisner e Umberto Eco.

Joe Sacco é um autor de histórias em quadrinhos que são verdadeiras reportagens. Elas levaram a mídia a cunhar o termo ‘jornalismo em quadrinhos’. Mas Sacco forma apenas a camada mais visível das relações entre os quadrinhos e o jornalismo, que são bastante antigas e profundas. Numa segunda camada, aprofundando o universo temático, encontraremos diversos outros autores, em diversas épocas, se dedicando a produzir reportagens gráfico-seqüenciais, sejam breves ou longas. E na terceira camada, abordada do ponto de vista estrutural, veremos como a presença dos quadrinhos nos jornais foi determinante para a evolução gráfica de das duas linguagens. Concluímos então que a discussão propiciada pelo trabalho de autores como Sacco podem não só ajudar a difundir a atual maturidade dos quadrinhos, como também nos ajudar a entendê-la melhor.

Nos adentramos en las posibilidades de la novela gráfica como una plataforma discursiva de crítica social que reactualiza y tensa el otrora paradigma del arte comprometido. A partir de las ideas de Georges Didi-Huberman en Ante el tiempo, iremos desarrollando el análisis sobre la “modernidad del anacronismo”, la funcionalidad de la “imagen-combate” y la efectividad de la “imagen-aura” en la propuesta de Joe Sacco. La problemática central del estudio se debate en la "lucha" entre palabra e imagen; esta última, en tanto dispositivo de acceso a la experiencia límite para reconstruir la memoria histórica del acontecimiento.
