Kemalism, Modernity and Representation

The role of the charismatic power and charismatic leadership increases during the authoritarian modernization of traditional society. Authoritites use different methods to construct and fabricate their images of charismatic leadership. During the one-party period in Early Turkish Republic the leader of the state exalted his personality through the transmission of his images, translating it into political cult. Urban reconstruction and architecture played an important role in this process. Turkish authorities constantly reinvent important public spaces. One of these significant places is Taksim square at the heart of Istanbul. From the very first days of the establishment of the republic until now this area is a subject of constant negotiation between the authorities and other actors of power in order to ascribe meaning and symbols to this place. Using the example of Taksim square as an illustration of construction of charismatic leadership in traditional societies, this paper will demonstrate the history of representations of power in authoritarian regimes. Large range of textual and visual materials (archival documents, memories, newspapers and journals) are examined.

One of the most distinguished intellectuals, major figures of National Struggle and major women writers of the Turkish Republic, Halide Edib had major contributions to the Turkish Theater. Mostly known for her novels and articles, the writer’s contribution to the Turkish theatre as a playwright, translator, director,actor, theatre critic were emphasized, the effect of her political views, her public persona in Turkish history and her other literary works that inspired her to write the play were analyzed. Her  unstaged  play Masks  and  Sous  (later developed as Masks Or Souls in a different version by the writer) was deeply analyzed in various ways. A method was suggested for a possible production of the play, the text was edited and simplified and a stage reading production was presented at the 20 th.Istanbul Theater Festival. The goal  was to present Halide Edip Adıvar to the theatre community from a different perspective and rediscover  her.

ÖZET
Türk Modernleşmesi, 1700’lü yıllarda, Yirmisekiz Çelebi Mehmet Efendi’nin Avrupa’daki Fransa Elçiliği dönemindeki (1720-1721) gözlemlerini içeren raporundaki önerilerin Osmanlı yönetimine tavsiye edilmeye başlanması ile tarihlenen yıllara değin uzatılabilir. Varlığının son 150-200 yılında Batılılaşmaya ve/veya Modernleşmeye hasredilen değişim, dönüşüm ve yeniden yapılandırma sürecinin, endüstri devrimi ile hızla kapitalistleşen dünya sistemine uyum için yeterli olmaması sebebiyle, Osmanlı devlet ve toplum yapısının sistemsel olarak varlığını devam ettirmesi mümkün olmamıştır. Bir noktadan sonra ancak siyasi manevralar ile ayakta kalabilen devlet, ekonomik gücünü yitirmiş, sosyal ve kültürel dokusunun canlılığını koruyamamış, birey, aile, mahalle, toplum ve devlet yapılarının birbirini tamamlayan, bütünleyen, destekleyen ve güçlendiren yüzlerce yıllık örgüsünün çözülmesiyle karşı karşıya kalmıştır.
Bu çözülmeye karşı durmak için Osmanlı çeşitli Modernleşme adımları atmıştır. 1826’da Yeniçeri Ocağı yerine modern ordunun kurulması, bürokratik yapıdaki köklü değişimler, hukuk kodifikasyonlarının şer’i hukuktan uzaklaşarak Batı hukukuna yakınlaşması, Tanzimat (1839) ve Islahat (1856) fermanları, 1876’da I. Meşrutiyet’in ve 1909’da II. Meşrutiyet’in ilanı, sosyal hayatta, gündelik yaşamda, giyim-kuşamda, görgü kurallarında, eğitimde, bilimde, sağlıkta, tarımda, sanayi üretiminde, madencilikte, ulaşımda, insanın yaşamını kuşatan bütün alanlarda yaşanan değişimler, bu adımlardan bazılarıdır. Bu açıdan modernleşme süreci, epistemolojik, yani varlık, bilgi ve değer alanlarının da dönüşmesini ifade eder.
Cumhuriyet sosyolojisi, bu çözülmeyi incelerken dayanak alınacak özellikleri kendi yaklaşımları içinden ortaya koymuştur. Bunun iki farklı yaklaşımını, İstanbul Sosyoloji Geleneği’nin temsilcisi Cahit Tanyol (1914- ...) ve Yorumbilgisel Sosyoloji Geleneği’nin temsilcisi Şerif Mardin (1927-2017)’in düşünceleri ile karşılaştırmalı olarak ele alacağız. Bu sürecin tahlili, modernleşme girişimindeki yetersizliklerimizi, yanlışlıklarımızı veya sonuçsuz girişimlerimizi, verdiğimiz sosyal, kültürel, hukuk kodifikasyonu ve kimlik ödünlerinin nasıl sonuçlara yol açtığının listesini de ortaya koyar.
Nihayetinde, modernleşme, bize Batı-merkezci olarak dayatılan bir süreç midir, bizim yapamadığımız bir sürecin adı mıdır, yoksa modernleşmeyi yanlış mı anladık, içselleştirdik ve uyguladık, veya bunların hepsini eş-zamanlı olarak bir arada mı yaşıyoruz? Bu sorunun cevabını, Cumhuriyet dönemi Türk Modernleşmesi’ni bizatihi yaşayan, ülke tarihine tanıklık eden, çalışmalarıyla bu konuyu etraflıca ele alan, tespitler, yorumlar ve öngörüler ortaya koyan iki önemli sosyal bilimcinin, sosyoloğun çalışmaları üzerinden arayacağız.

ABSTRACT
The Turkish Modernization can be extended to the years after the recommendations of the Ottoman administration in the 1700s, when the recommendations of Yirmisekiz Çelebi Mehmet Efendi in the European Embassy in France (1720-1721) were observed. Change in the last 150-200 years of existence by Westernization and/or Modernization, conversion and reconstruction process; due to the inadequacy for adaptation to the rapidly capitalized world system with the industrial revolution, the systematic existence of the Ottoman state and society was not possible. State that can survive only after a but point with political maneuvers, has lost its economic power completely, did can not maintain the vitality of social and cultural structre, it has been faced with the dissolution of  hundreds of years of knitting of the individual, family, neighborhood, community and state structures that complement, integrating, support and strengthen each other.
In order to stand against this dissolution the Ottoman has taken several modernization steps. Establishment of modern army in 1826 instead of Janissaries, radical changes in bureaucratic structure, convergence of law with the Western law, Edicts of Tanzimat (1839) and Islahat (1856), Announcement of the First Constitutional Monarchy in 1876 and II. Announcement of the Constitutional Monarchy in 1909, in social life, in everyday life, clothing-finery style, in etiquette, in education, in science, in health, in agricultural, in production, in mining, in transportation, changin processes in all areas that surround the life of people, are some of these steps. From this point of view, the process of modernization also refers to the transformation of epistemological, that is, areas of existence, knowledge and value.
The sociology of the Republic revealed the features to be based on in its analysis from its own approaches. The tradition of two different approaches, Cahit Tanyol (1914-…), representative of the İstanbul Sociological Tradition, and Şerif Mardin (1927-2017), representative of the Hermenuetic Sociological Tradition, will put them in comparison with their thoughts. The analysis of this process reveals the inadequacies of our attempt to modernization, our inaccuracies or inconclusive attempts. This analysis also gives the list of results that this social, cultural, legal codification and identity concessions that we have made.
In the end, modernization is a process that has been imposed on us as a West-centric, is the name of a process that we cannot, otherwise, we understood, internalized and implemented modernization wrongly, or all of them live together simultaneously? We research the answer to this question with works of the two important social scientist and sociologist who witnessed the history of the Turkish Modernization in the Republican era, witnessed the history of the country, discussed this issue thoroughly with their works, and revealed the findings, comments and predictions.

Özet Bu çalışmanın temel amacı Kemalist modernleşme sürecinin niteliğini tartışmaktır. Bu doğrultuda makale öncelikle Tanzimat döneminden itibaren Osmanlı İmparatorluğunda gözlenen siyasi değişikliklerin Türk modernleşmesindeki yerinin ve anlamının üzerinde duracaktır. Daha sonra ise Kemalist modernleşme sürecinin ve Cumhuriyetin Osmanlının bir devamı olup olmadığı temel sorunsalına ayrıntılı biçimde değinilecektir. Tüm bu tartışmalarla bağlantı olarak son olarak ise Türk modernleşmesinin kendine özgü bir yapısı olduğu sonucuna varılarak erken Cumhuriyet dönemindeki Kemalist modernleşme sürecine dair yapılan eleştirilere değinilerek Kemalist modernleşmenin günümüzdeki etkileri tartışılacaktır. Abstract The main purpose of this work is to discuss the nature of the Kemalist modernization process. In this respect, the article will primarily focus on the place and the meaning of the political changes observed in the Ottoman Empire since the Tanzimat period in Turkish modernization. Later on, the basic problem of Kemalist modernization and whether the Republic is a continuation of the Ottoman Empire will be elaborated. Finally, in connection with all these discussions, it is concluded that Turkish modernization has its own unique structure and the contemporary effects of the Kemalist modernization will be discussed by referring to the criticisms of the Kemalist modernization process in the early Republican period.

Résumé : Le kémalisme, idéologie officielle de la république de Turquie, a pris pour modèle la société et les institutions européennes. Cependant, pour légitimer les importantes réformes des années trente aux yeux de l’opinion, le pouvoir culturel a choisi de les faire passer pour un retour aux anciennes traditions turques du Moyen Age pré-musulman et musulman. C’est pourquoi, dans les discours historiques scolaire et académique, l’accent a été vigoureusement porté sur le versant asiatique et médiéval du passé des Turcs.
De la sorte, Atatürk lui-même a été présenté, non pas comme un légataire des valeurs occidentales qu’il avait contribué à importer en Turquie, mais comme l’héritier de certains héros de l’histoire turque médiévale. Le kaghan Bilge, qui a dirigé au VIIIe siècle les Turcs dits Célestes en Haute-Asie, est censé représenter les pures valeurs de la turcité, non influencée encore par l’islam. Quant au sultan seldjoukide Alparslan, qui a vaincu les Byzantins en Anatolie orientale et a ouvert ce pays aux Turcs, il est considéré comme le créateur de l’actuelle Turquie musulmane.
Dans le récit historique, ces deux héros sont explicitement présentés comme les prédécesseurs d’Atatürk. Des procédés rhétoriques et discursifs permettent à la fois de projeter les préoccupations du présent sur ce passé médiéval et de légitimer le présent par le passé. Chacun des deux héros porte des valeurs différentes - la turcité “pure” et la turcité musulmane - qui ont leur propre fonction dans l’idéologie kémaliste et dans la mémoire collective.
Summary : Kemalist ideology, which is the official thought of contemporary Turkey, has been strongly inspired by existing European models. But in order to legitimize the radical reforms of the thirties, it seemed necessary to present them as a return to old Turkish traditions. Thus, the historical discourse strongly emphasized Asian and medieval chapters of Turkish past.
Consequently, Atatürk himself is not presented as a heir of European values he contributed to bring to Turkey, but as a successor of some medieval heroes. Bilge, khan of the Göktürk tribe in Central Asia (viiith century), is presented as an embodiment of « pure » Turkish values, i.e. without any islamic influence. Alparslan, sultan of the Seljuks (xith century), who defeated the Byzantines in eastern Anatolia and made the Turkish settlement possible in this region, is seen as the very founder of present muslim Turkey.
In the historical narrative, both heroes are explicitly presented as heralds of Atatürk. By the mean of rhetoric and discursive processes, political concerns of present times are projected onto this medieval past, and the present is legitimized by the past. Each heroe embodies a different virtue (the « pure » Turkish spirit and the « muslim » Turkish spirit) which have their own function in State ideology and in collective memory.

While considering the present political scenario of Turkey, the ruling party AKP or Justice
and Development Party have governed the republic for more than two decades. During this
rule, the republic’s founding ideology- ‘Kemalism’ has been vehemently criticised and
delegitimized. Departing from Kermalism, the governing AKP advocates a very different
ideology, that is, the long lasting Turkish conservative centre-right tradition. The current
AKP connects with the former radicals educated in Turkey’s own tradition of political Islam
through a flawed concept of a modern society held together by conservative values. Whereas,
the Kemalist version of secularism is “assertive and secularism”, which means, it does not
only support the idea of religion and state as two distinct realms, but considers the state
authority responsible to limit the influence of religion in social life. The shift of ideology can
be observed in the aforesaid films and somehow these popular texts can become important
focus of study of contemporary Kemalism. The films chosen for this study are are Nefes or
The Breath (2009), Dag or The Mountain (2012), Dag 2 or The Mountain 2 (2016), Wolf
(2018) and a web series Boru (2018). The important political events that the films try to
address are being observed in this project in the light of the popular films and their reception
both among Turkish and global audience. The explicit and implicit presence of Mustafa
Kemal Ataturk is observed and traced in this study. Before delving into the research I have
decided to go through the history of the Republic for a better observation of the political
events and their sources that are portrayed in these films and how under the rule of Mustafa
Kemal a modernization process took place and what shape it took after his death. To observe
the aesthetics of the popular war films and web series a study of the history of Turkish
cinema and web series has been included in that chapter. The presence which has been
discussed in this project is of a certain kind which can be detected for definite period. For this
span of time, we have already seen in the first chapter the tumultuous situation Turkey is
going through since the 2000s. It is a period of deep political polarization basically on two
issues which became important unresolvable questions after the death of Ataturk- what role
should religion play in the public square and what role should a powerful state play in the
private life of the citizens. Even after 75 years of his death Mustafa Kemal is the ever present
figure in the struggle of Turkey in search of its own identity.

Pieter Verstraete is an independent theater scholar who, for the past 6 years, had been working and researching in Turkey. The political development of the last years has had many effects, e.g. on the daily lives, on the arts and culture, on journalism. Verstraete is not only one of those who had to leave the country but also an expert on contemporary Turkish theater. In this very personal and moving text, he shares his impressions of the last two years and gives a brief insight into a few of the artistic consequences.

Nie zuvor wurde in der zeitgenössischen Musik die Auseinandersetzung mit fremden Traditi-onen so umfassend gefördert wie heute. Die Konfrontation des Diversen verlangt jedoch von ihren Dialogpartnern ein neues, selbstkritisches Verständnis innerkultureller Prozesse. Am Beispiel der Türkei, wo westliche Musik sinnbildlich für die Kultur des Abendlandes steht, werden Möglichkeiten und Gefahren einer globalen Neuen Musik analysiert.

Culture has an indisputable place in the establishment of politics. Thus, political party logos which has an important place in mass communication, feed on cultural symbols and contain promises about the future by emphasizing habits in social memory. In Turkey, Six Arrows logo of Republican People's Party and the values it represents,are tried to be explained per changing political agenda by civil society. In the name of democratization, the diversified approaches within the scope of the logo support the continuity of economic and cultural debates within the scope of Kemalism and lead to a democracy dilemma rather than democratisation of politics. The historical origins and the reasons of criticisms towards Kemalism as ethnic nationalist in terms of cultural, as corporatist in terms of economy policies and the explanations brought to the logo by the civil society will be examined in context of political and cultural representations of the logo to bring a satisfactory research and clarification within the context of the logo. The logo will be evaluated in terms formality, relations, integrity its cultural ties and messages. The answers will be sought to the criticisms, which are towards economy and culture policies of Kemalism in context of democracy.

Öz Kültürün siyasetin kurulması konusunda tartışmasız bir yeri vardır. Bu sebeple kitle iletişiminde önemli yeri olan siyasal parti logoları, kültürel sembollerden beslenirken, toplumsal hafızadaki alışkanlıklara vurgu yaparak geleceğe dair vaatler içerir. Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devleti'nin en köklü sembollerinden birisi olan CHP'nin logosu Altı Ok ve temsil ettiği değerler, değişen gündeme göre sivil toplumu oluşturan siyasiler, araştırmacılar ve gazeteciler tarafından tekrar açıklanmaya çalışılmaktadır. What Kemal Ataturk understood and all the filthy Satanic sheikhs of Mecca, Medina, Riyadh, Jerusalem, Amman, Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo, Algiers, Tripoli, Tunis, etc. cannot understand is the conclusion about the gradual collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the key role played by the Anglo-French Freemasons and Zionists in this ominous process, which spread terror and death throughout the Ottoman territories that the Satanic Western Zionist and Freemasonic mass media mendaciously and ludicrously call "Middle East".

New Turkey rhetoric falls into the time period when the republic was declared by abolishing the sultanate and the Turkish revolution occurred between the two world wars. It is possible to come across this discourse frequently in the Western and national press. Ataturk has been regarded as the architect of the new Turkey. Thus, the new Turkey and Atatürk's ruling period have been identified as closely interrelated. The notion of democracy was overlooked during the process of founding the new Turkey, fascist and communist ideologies which were leaning towards authoritarianism and totalitarianism came to power. The new Turkey where Ataturk’s reforms were implemented decisively was influenced by the political atmosphere of the era. After the world-wide economic crisis in 1929, the quest to stabilize the politics and economy of the young republic was intensified. The principles of Kemalism were shaped in this process, party state integrity was achieved, but the search for  emocracy was not finalised. In the 1930s, when democratic values were  verlooked,
articles evaluating national sovereignty, liberalism, parliamentarism and democracy in national and foreign press were published. As a stark contrast to the turbulent period in the history of the world, many articles that praised democracy were published in Turkey. Despite the one-party state, the commitment to democracy by Turkey and Ataturk was praised. The existence of democracy in the new Turkey is explained by the hetoric that opposition is allowed within one party. Atatürk himself made a detailed analysis of democracy, desired the development of democratic consciousness in Turkey, and even encouraged the opposition by appointing his sister in the establishment of a new party. Those in important offices such as Recep Peker, Mahmut Esat Bozkurt, Şükrü Kaya shared Atatürk's views on democracy and drew the boundary of individual freedom with national expediency. The purpose of this article is to try to understand the implementation of democracy attempts of the new Turkey which was seeking a stable direction during a period when the target set by Ataturk to raise to the level of civilised nations was shifted to far right and far left sharply between the two world wars.

Yeni Türkiye söylemi, saltanatın kaldırılarak cumhuriyetin ilan edildiği ve Türk inkılabının uygulandığı iki dünya savaşı arası zaman dilimine işaret eder. Batılı ve ulusal basında bu söyleme sık sık rastlamak mümkündür. Atatürk ise Yeni Türkiye’nin mimarı olarak nitelendirilmiştir. Dolayısıyla Yeni Türkiye ile Atatürk’ün iktidar dönemi iç içe geçmiş, özdeşleşmiştir. Yeni Türkiye’nin inşası sürecinde demokrasi gözden düşmüş, otoriter ve totaliter eğilimli faşist ve komünist ideolojiler iktidara gelmişlerdir. Atatürk devrimlerinin kararlılıkla uygulandığı Yeni Türkiye, dönemin siyasal atmosferinden etkilenmiştir. 1929’da yaşanan dünya ölçeğindeki ekonomik buhran sonrasında, genç cumhuriyetin siyaset ve ekonomisine istikrar kazandırma arayışı yoğunlaşmıştır. Kemalizm prensipleri bu süreçte şekillenmiş, parti devlet bütünlüğü sağlanmış, ancak demokrasi arayışları sonlanmamıştır. Demokratik değerlerin gözden düştüğü 1930’lu yıllarda ulusal ve yabancı basında milli egemenlik, liberalizm, parlamentarizm ve demokrasiyi değerlendiren yazılar kaleme alınmıştır. Dünya tarihinin çalkantılı bu dönemine tezat bir şekilde, Türkiye’de demokrasiyi öven birçok yazı kaleme alınmıştır. Tek parti yönetimine rağmen, Türkiye’nin demokratik bir ülke olduğu ve Atatürk’ün demokrasiye bağlılığı takdir edilmiştir. Bu yazının amacı, Atatürk’ün hedef olarak belirlediği Muasır Medeniyetin ibresinin keskin bir kırılma ile en sağa ve sola kaydığı iki dünya savaşı arası dönemde, kendine istikrarlı bir yön arayan Yeni Türkiye’de demokrasi kavrayışını 1930’lu yılların ulusal ve yabancı basınında yer alan demokrasi okumaları ışığında anlamaya çalışmaktır.

With the inauguration of the presidential system in Turkey, theatre as an institution is at a historical crossroads. By 15 July 2018, just before the controversial emergency law was lifted, two decrees restricting the autonomy of artists working at state theatres, operas and ballets were issued. The first decree replaces a law from 1949 which secures autonomy over budgeting and programming. The second places all state theatres under direct control of the president. During the summer, the institutions were temporarily closed until they were harmonized with the new political system. With this structural change, a lengthier political process of shifting powers and centralization is being consolidated. But there has also been a more fundamental epistemological shift going on in Turkey's ideological consciousness, which is deeply rooted in a history of the public sector and of state institutionalism.

Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kuruluşunda oluşturulan stratejik kimlik nasıl kavramsal olarak betimlenebilir ? Bu makalede, bu sorunun cevabını vermeye çalışacağız. Stratejik kimlik kavramını Michel Foucault’nun ‘devletin yükseltilmesi’ önermesini temel olarak kullanacağız. Söz konusu yükseltme, -konjonktürel ve taktiksel davranış modellerinin ötesinde- yapısal olarak tanımlanmış stratejik kimliğin niteliğine dokunmadan, kimliğin içrek dinamiklerinin nicel olarak geliştirilmesi ile gerçekleşmekte. Çalışma çerçevesinde Cumhuriyetin stratejik kimliğinin oluşturulması sürecini ve söylemini 17inci yüzyılda Avrupa’daki Westfalyen devrimi ile karşılaştıracağız. Paralel olrak da, Cumhuriyet’in kuruluşunda ‘oluşturulan hafızayı ve mitleri’ resmi ve popüler söylemler doğrultusunda analiz etmeye çalışacağız. Kanımızca, bu mitolojinin değişmesi, basit bir söylem değişikliğinden öte, yapısal olarak stratejik kimliğin değişmesi anlamına gelir. Bu da devletin yükseltilmesi nosyonunun, niteliksel değişimine sebep olur ki, bu değişiklik, hangi içrek dinamiklerin geliştirilmesi kararının ve stratejik kimliğin temel aldığı casus belli konseptinin değişmesine de neden olur.

The aim of this course is to analyze and discuss the historical course of ideological approaches that have emerged in Turkey since the late-Ottoman/early-Republican period. In order to take this course, students are expected to know various concepts and have a certain knowledge of the main political divisions in Turkey. In order to achieve this goal, various concepts related to social sciences will be repeated in the first week and how they will be used throughout the course will be explained. Again, at the beginning of each lesson, what various political ideological forms are will be evaluated in an objective sense and the relevant subject will be conveyed following a certain choragic line.

The Turkish Cultural Revolution has been a steady of debate and controversy for scholars coming from different disciplines of social science since the founding elites attempted to build the new secular society upon a disintegrating cosmopolitan empire in 1923. One of the off shoots of this modernization project championed by a group of elite soldiers under the leadership of Atatürk was the so-called Turkish music revolution. In this paper, I am defining the imagination of a nation and its cultural modular forms in an underdeveloped oriental milieu as that of Turkey as daydreaming because I would argue that the so-called music revolution of this total cultural fabrication throughout the 1930s, 1940s resulted in confusion, feelings of anxiety, artistic and cultural volatility, and, thereby, paved the way for an opportunity to navigate in a space between the Occident and the Orient spatio-temporality in parallel to ethno-racist discourses.

Kurucu elitleri yeni seküler bir toplumu dağılmakta olan kozmopolit bir uygarlığın üzerine inşa etmeye teşebbüs ettiklerinden dolayı Türk Kültürel Devrimi sosyal bilimler disiplininin farklı alanlarından gelen pek çok akademisyen için değişemeyen tartışmalı bir konu olmuştur. Atatürk liderliği altındaki bir gurup elit asker grubu önderliğinde yürüyen bu modernleşme projesinin bir alt uzantısı Türk müzik devrimi olarak da bilinir. Bu makalede, Türkiye'nin ki gibi geç, az gelişmiş şarklı bir alan içinde zuhur eden bir ulusun ve onun kültürel formlarının tahayyülünü gündüşü olarak tanımlıyorum çünkü 1930'lar ve 1940'lar boyunca zuhur eden bu topyekûn kültürel dizaynın müzik devrimi etno-ırkçı söylemlere paralel olarak kafa karışıklığı, endişe hisleri, sanatsal ve kültürel uçuculuk ile sonuçlanmıştır ve nihayetinde Garp ve Şark zamansal-alansallığı arasında bir seyrinin önünü açmıştır.

Abstract
Can national liberation movements envisage self-rule without statehood? This research examines the politics of a national liberation movement that claims to do just that.
The research focuses on the incessant quest for self-rule in Kurdistan in general and the politics of dominant Kurdish liberation movements in Turkey and Syria in particular – with regard to the kind of political community they aspire to found.
The research reveals that a salient aspect of Kurdish politics has been its detachment from state-building, and that this aspect dominates the politics of Kurdish movements in Turkey and Syria. Likewise, their project for self-rule in Kurdistan envisages a political community that differs greatly from its competitors; i.e. the hegemonic nation-state and its main opposition Islamic Ummah.
I note that the Kurdish model draws heavily on the growing literature in political theory about the inadequacy of representative institutions and the risks of appealing to the notion of national sovereignty. I emphasize that the project shifts the origin of sovereignty from ‘the imagined community’, i.e. the nation, to residential communities (note the plurality). I also highlight that the Kurdish model of political community is built upon the exercise of political power through direct and semi-direct forms of democracy. Popular councils and assemblies within municipalities appear as the ultimate regulatory institutions. Sovereignty, thus, is dispersed and fragmented throughout autonomous, yet co-existing, and ideally horizontally organized political entities such as towns and cities. Accordingly, the primary form of political organization is not territorial state, but autonomous municipality.
I argue that the claim to self-rule in the model is not in the name of the nation, but of communities of settlement, e.g. villages, neighbourhoods, towns, and cities. In a world of nationstates, the Kurdish movements’ politics is an interesting example of post-nationalist and post-sovereign claims.

Günümüzde LGBTİ+’ların sağ politik zeminde günahkâr olarak damgalandığı ve kriminalize edilerek ötekileştirildiği bu dönemde LGBTİ+lara ilişkin iktidar tarafından topluma fobik bilgiler aktardığı görülmektedir. Muhalefet tarafında Kemalist siyasi liderlerin ise iktidarın bu tutumu karşısında insan haklarının ihlal edilmesinden şikâyetçi olduğu söylenebilir.

Hem insan haklarına yapılan müdahale hem de keyfi siyasi açıklamalar LGBTİ+ların temel ifade ve yaşama haklarını da zorlaştırmaktadır. Yakın tarihte yaşanan Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’ne rektör ataması sonucu öğrencilerin ve akademisyenlerin tepkisi keyfi siyasetin varlığını somut bir biçimde gösterdi. Olaylar sırasında LGBTİ+ bayraklarının merkez medyada terörize edilecek şekilde yansıtılması ve 15 Mart günü kadınların yürüyüşü sırasında LGBTİ+ bayraklarının polisler tarafından alana alınmaması gibi örnekler son zamanlarda LGBTİ+ların sağ çevrelerce sözlü ve uygulamalı olarak baskı altına alındığını göstermektedir. In this early 80-pages essay I provided a comprehensive picture of the ideological roots and of the meaning of Kemalism, devoting nearly half of the work to the economic policies of the Kemalist regime. Finally I proposed for Kemalism the definition of "authoritarian-pedagocic regime".

Tutunamayanlar (2015) romanı Turgut Özben’in Selim Işık’ın ardında bıraktıklarını okuyarak geçirdiği dönüşümün hikâyesidir. Bu dönüşüm, Türkiye toplumunun, Cumhuriyet modernleşmesinin baş döndürücü hızının yarattığı şaşkınlık ve çaresizliğinin kolektif bilinçaltındaki yansıması olarak okunabilir. Oğuz Atay, başkişisi Özben’in Türkiye’nin geç-Modernleşme pratiklerine yabancılaşması sonucu vuku bulan dönüşümünü, karakterin müntehir arkadaşının ardında bıraktıklarını okuması yoluyla bir bağlama oturtmasını sağlar. Bu bağlamda geç-Batılılaşma ve Batılılaşmacı düşüncenin köklerini teşkil eden kapitalist Modernitenin gündelik pratikleri ve düşünsel altyapısı, 1960’larda zuhur etmiş ve ideolojik kökenlerini Kemalist söylemle temellendiren sol görüşlü aydınlar, milliyetçi resmî tarih doktrini ve bunun ikonları Özben’in ironi ve parodi yoluyla değersizleştirdiği hedefler haline gelir. Guattari’nin yaklaşımından bakılırsa kapitalist-Modernitenin despotik makinelerinden sıyrılma amacı güden, Bakhtinci karnavalesk unsurların diyalojik çok-sesliliğinden güç alan ve göçebe hareket sonucu vuku bulan bir “şizo-özne” inşası biçiminde belirginleşir. Bu çalışmada Turgut Özben’in dönüşümü Deleuze ve Guattari’nin yersizyurtsuzlaşma kavramı çerçevesinde analiz edilecek; metnin biçiminde görülen yersizyurtsuzlaşma ise Mikhail Bakhtin’in karnavalesk ve diyalojizm kavramları ile Deleuze ve Guattari’nin terminolojisi arasında paraleller kurularak aktarılacaktır.

This chapter explores Yugoslav Muslims’ view of Turkey in the interwar period. More precisely, the chapter shows how imagining Turkey was a truly transnational venture—that is to say, conflicting discourses on Turkey and its inhabitants were fashioned through interactions among people, goods, and ideas happening largely across, and beyond, state borders. Trans/international and local at the same time, the act of imagining Turkey thus became a practice of reflection on several thorny issues affecting Muslim individual and collective trajectories, and of expressing anxieties and expectations concerning the place of Muslims in a post-Ottoman world.
