Lower Austria

Stift Göttweig is located approx. 4 km south of the city Krems an der Donau on the hill "Göttweiger Berg" in the foreland of the Dunkelsteinerwald on c. 420 m. The monastery has been founded by bishop Altmann von Passau in 1083 at the latest and was redesigned in the 18th century according to plans by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, who brought the monastery to its present form of landscape-defining appearance. In 2019, geophysical examinations of the entire area were carried out using georadar. The collected data answered architectural questions and created a sustainable basis for planning potential future construction projects and earth movements in the area.

In the castle of Traismauer, a picturesque city in the heart of Lower Austria at the mouth of the river Traisen into the Danube, the new exhibition ‘Treasures of Traismauer’ (’Traismaurer Schätze’) opened recently.
Traismauer, ancient ‘Augustianis,’ was one of several Roman forts along the right bank of the Danube. With a chain of defensive buildings and the connecting Limes road, the Romans secured their northern border. Outstanding remains of this place are preserved to this day and were recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The exhibition presents the visitors with a holistic picture of the Roman settlement, showing well-known and several recent archaeological discoveries from Traismauer’s Roman period, researched by commercial archaeologists from companies like ARDIG and the Bundesdenkmalamt (Austrian Federal Monuments Authority).
But not only ‘treasures’ from Roman times can be visited in the rooms of Traismauer Castle. Dedicated Traismauer residents have searched for traces through the city and tracked down patterns on houses, squares, and nature. Furthermore, contemporary program booklets, original music scores by great composers such as Strauss and Ziehrer, and many other treasures that make the hearts of music lovers beat faster are on display.

Das berühmte Barockstift Melk in Niederösterreich und die wenige Kilometer entfernte Schallaburg bilden Antipoden. War es das Stift, das im Mittelalter Geschichte schrieb, so war in der Reformationszeit die Schallaburg ein Zentum des Protestantismus; das Stift zerfiel. In der Barockzeit kehrte sich diese Entwicklung wieder um.

Das Horner Becken ist ein deutlich abgegrenztes Sondergebiet des Waldviertels. 1 Der für die Lebensverhältnisse sehr günstige landschaftliche Charakter dieser Gegend hat seit prähistorischen Zeiten immer wieder bevorzugt Menschen angelockt, die dann hier ihre Spuren hinterlassen haben. 2 Zu den bestvertretenen Zeiten gehört die jüngere Steinzeit und da bereits die frühe Phase, die sogenannte Linearbandkeramische Kultur. Die Hinterlassenschaften dieser Zeit sind-nicht nur im Horner Becken sondern auch im ganzen Manhartsbergbereich-umfangreich und zahlreich, sodass bereits die frühesten Forscher diesbezügliche Belege in ihren Sammlungen verwahren konnten. 3 Heute sind diese Relikte – soweit noch erhalten – größtenteils in musealer Verwaltung und es gibt darüber auch zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen aus rund hundertfünfzig Jahren, die natürlich jeweils dem Zeitgeist entsprechen. 4 Ein Mangel dieser Berichte ist – allgemein betrachtet – das Fehlen möglichst genauer Lokalisation der Funde, sodass oftmals kaum mehr als der Name einer Katastralgemeinde als Fundort bekannt ist. 5 Eine nähere Zuordnung ist damit praktisch unmöglich sofern nicht private Aufzeichnungen der Finder noch verfügbar sind. Die großen Forscher des Waldviertels haben solche Unterlagen hinterlassen und es gibt handschriftliche Vermerke unterschiedlicher Qualität von Ponz von Engelshofen, Johann Krahuletz, Franz Kießling und Josef Höbarth. Ein Problem ist es, das solche Aufzeichnungen von den Verwahrern meist eifersüchtig behütet werden und, wenn überhaupt, nur nach langwierigen Verhandlungen eingesehen werden dürfen. Verfasser hatte diesbezüglich kaum jemals Erfolg und wenn, dann meist erst nach vielen Jahrzehnten. Eine planmäßige Feldforschung war daher nur in Hinblick auf eigene flächendeckende Suchgänge möglich. Die vielgerühmte Waldviertler Forschungstradition beschränkte sich auf die veröffentlichten Texte, die aber bis in die Sechzigerjahre des vorigen Jahrhunderts hinein meist recht allgemein gehalten sind. Somit ist es sehr schwierig und unsicher, alte und neue Ergebnisse zusammenzuführen und erfolgte seitens des Verfassers eine Verknüpfung nur dann, wenn diese anhand der Quellen wirklich zweifelsfrei war. Ansonsten hat Verfasser nicht nur die eigenen Ergebnisse besprochen und veröffentlicht sondern auch – soweit möglich – für viele Zeitgenossen die fachliche Auswertung ihrer Funde durchgeführt. 6 Zur Publikation boten sich mehrere Zeitschriften an, hauptsächlich die seitens des Bundesdenkmalamtes heraus gegebene Zeitschrift " Fundberichte aus Österreich " , in der ab Band 10/1971 in beschränktem Maße auch Abbildungen veröffentlicht werden konnten und die dazu notwendigen Zeichnungen durch das Bundesdenkmalamt auch finanziert wurden. 7 So entstanden für Ostösterreich seitens des Verfassers an die tausend Berichte und Aufsätze, in welchen auch prähistorische Siedlungsplätze anhand der Funde charakterisiert wurden und mittels Maßangaben, Parzellennummern und Flurbezeichnungen nachvollziehbar dokumentiert oder lokalisiert wurden. 8 Die durch rund drei Jahrzehnte damals geschehene Kommassierung des Landes brachte allerdings zahlreiche Erschwernisse oder machte manchmal eine sichere Zuordnung fast unmöglich. Durch diese massiven Eingriffe in die Landschaft und in die Besitzverhältnisse wurden die Fluren oft drastisch verändert, Parzellen umgestaltet, Parzellen-und Flurbezeichnungen geändert und führte die Nivellierung des Reliefs zur Zerstörung, Überlagerung und Verschleppung des urgeschichtlichen Kulturgutes. Die Landschaft sieht dadurch heute auch oft ganz anders aus und auch die neuen Parzellennummern und Flurbezeichnungen erschweren die Zuordnung älterer Berichte. Wer diese Veränderungen nicht kennt oder nicht zur Kenntnis nehmen will, wird mit den seinerzeit veröffentlichten Dokumentationen nicht erfolgreich arbeiten können. Auch aus letzterem Grund werden hier einige Corrigenda zu einer jüngst erschienenen Kompilation gebracht, die sachlich und fachlich notwendig sind, weil ansonsten Falschinterpretationen ungeprüft seitens der Forschung weitergeschleppt werden könnten. Dies ist möglichst zu verhindern, weil Schlussfolgerungen, die auf falsch verstandener oder weitgehend ungenau zur Kenntnis genommener Grundlage aufgebaut sind, nicht zwingend realitätsbezogen sein müssen. Franz Pieler 9 hat in seinem 2010 erschienenen Buch " Die Bandkeramik im Horner Becken (Niederösterreich) " großzügig und ohne bei den dafür zuständigen, noch lebenden Forschern 10 rückzufragen, in kurzer Zeit fremde Forschungsergebnisse zusammengefasst und dabei nicht mit negativer herber Kritik gespart.

From c. the 2nd half of the 1st cent. AD to 488 AD, Noricum formed part of the Roman Empire. While particular regions of this province (e.g., the limes zone) have been in the focus of archaeological research for decades, in-depth analyses of other areas (i.e., the rural hinterland) often remain absent. This state of research applies especially to the section of the former ancient Roman Province in what is now the federal state of Lower Austria. Archaeological settlement activities in the 'limes' zone's hinterland are investigated and re-evaluated by the author's PhD-project 'Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum: Archaeological Studies on Roman Settlements in the Hinterland of Northern Noricum' to improve this unsatisfying research situation. In the following chapter, due to the multi-layered contents of the dissertation project, specific reference will be made to one particular aspect of the dissertation as an example, namely, characterizing the ancient Roman settlement dynamics in the study area.

Early Medieval earrings with three spheres.

The article focuses on early medieval bronze wire earrings with three hollow spheres made of sheet metal, two of which were placed on the suspension loop, while the third one sat on the lower part. Earrings of that description are typical for the Middle Danube Region, they date to the 9th and probably the first half of the 10th century AD. Wire earrings were quite popular then, for they were simple and cheap ornaments. They were produced in numerous workshops, mostly to meet the local demand. There are two subtypes: those with eyelet and hook fastening and those without fastening construction. The distribution of these subtypes shows regional differences: Earrings with eylet and hook construction are limited to south of the Danube, whereas in the region of today Moravia and Southwest Slovakia, this fastening construction was not utilised. On one hand this portrays the partition of the Middle Danube Region between Great Moravia and Carolingian Lower Austria, on the other hand it gives a clue – for the period when those earrings where universally worn – to the functioning of the Middle Danube Region as a communication channel, where different cultural currents met and spread. That, of course, was also the case with items other than female jewellry, but with them the phenomenon doesn’t show that clearly.

In 2010 and 2011 part of the cemetery surrounding the Romanesque church of St. John the Evangelist („Propsteikirche“) was excavated on the Propsteiberg in Zwettl (Lower Austria).

The excavation uncovered 275 graves, mostly without grave goods, of which a third were child burials. A small number of graves contained religious objects such as rosaries, a prayer book or rings with Christian symbols. Funeral crowns were also observed, in most cases in the graves of children.

Four burials contained upside-down ceramic pots, a feature which has previously been recorded several times in eastern Lower Austria and in the adjacent regions of South Moravia. Two of these graves included wooden chalices or a wooden paten beneath the ceramic pot and can therefore be identified as the graves of priests. This unusually high number of priests’ burials may reflect the presence of the college of canons in the vicinity. For this reason it seems possible that the churchyard was also a cemetery for the members of the collegiate chapter.

The part of the churchyard dealt with here was closed in the late 18th century, as far as the archaeological finds are concerned, but may have continued into the 19th century, as written sources indicate.

Early Medieval burial mounds near the „Schan-
ze“ of Thunau am Kamp. The Early Medieval barrow cem-
etery is situated next to the hillfort of Thunau near Gars
am Kamp in the Lower Austrian Waldviertel region. For
over a hundred years, this site has been one of the most
widely known of Lower Austria. In the years 1972–1975
H. Friesinger carried out systematic excavations in the area
of the grave mounds, approximately 150 m north-west of
the Early Medieval rampart. In all, seven graves were dis-
covered. The construction of the graves was not uniform:
Grave mounds with and without rectangular astone perim-
eter occurred as well as graves without any visible mound.
The bodies were all oriented roughly West-East, no crema-
tion graves were found. The inventory from the graves con-
sists of iron knives, an arrowhead and one head ornament
ring. Pottery was not found in the graves, but only in the
space between the mounds. The burial mounds belong to
the first Early Medieval settlement phase on the site, dating
to the first half of the 9th century AD. Consequently, we
discuss the known barrow cemeteries of Lower and Upper
Austria and their position within the „Southern Bohemian –
Austrian tumulus region”.

""Zusammenfassung
Diese Arbeit bietet mit der Analyse eines repräsentativen Ausschnitts der bekanntgewordenen Sammelfunde von der Schweighofer Mauer (KG Ertl) einen Überblick über den von einer Landsiedlung der MSG im Grenzraum Niederösterreich/Oberösterreich zu erwartenden Siedlungsabfall. Bei den Kleinfunden sind ein punktverzierter, ehemals wahrscheinlich mit Birkenteer inkrustierter Bäreneckzahn sowie die Fragmente einer Flachhammer-Axt und eines Schuhleistenkeils erwähnenswert, bei der furchenstichverzierten Ware neben den allgemein Mondsee-typischen Formen scharf profilierte Gefäße mit tiefem, feinem Furchenstich sowie ein gerundeter Krug mit Furchenstich auf dem Standboden. Die auffällige Lage des Fundorts auf einer ausgesetzten Felsklippe zeigt eine frappante Übereinstimmung zu weiteren Plätzen in der Region und wird als Ausdruck einer aus eher kleinen Personengruppen bestehenden, möglicherweise verstärkt jagdlich orientierten Gesellschaft interpretiert. Die gleichfalls gut mit diesen Vergleichssiedlungen parallelisierbare chronologische Entwicklung vom Ende der frühen bis in die fortgeschrittene Mondsee-Gruppe weist darauf hin, dass auch die am Ende der Besiedelung stehende Kerbleistenkeramik noch zur Mondsee-Gruppe gezählt werden kann. Sie zeigt bereits deutliche Anklänge zur Chamer Gruppe und dürfte sich durch einen Einfluss der Boleráz-Gruppe herausgebildet haben, der sich auf der Schweighofer Mauer auch durch mindestens einen wahrscheinlichen „echten“ Import fassen lässt. Am Umbruch vom Jung- zum Endneolithikum wurde diese Gruppe von besonders kleinflächigen Höhensiedlungen dann im Gefolge von wirtschaftlichen oder gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen verlassen.

Late Neolithic waste material from the “Schweighofer Mauer”, Ertl, Lower Austria (Jakob Maurer)
This article offers an overview of the settlement waste material to be expected from a rural settlement of the Mondsee group in the Lower/Upper Austrian border area on the basis of an analysis of a representative sample of the known finds from the so-called “Schweighofer Mauer” (“Schweighof wall”, Ertl village). Worthy of mention among the small finds are a bear canine decorated with stab marks and probably formerly encrusted with birch pitch and fragments of a thin-sectioned hammer/axe and a shoe-last axe. Among the pottery with channelled decoration are not only the typical Mondsee forms, but also strongly contoured vessels with deep, delicate furrows and a rounded jug with channelled decoration on its base. The striking location of the finds site on an exposed cliff is remarkably similar to other sites in the region and is seen to indicate a society, which consisted of generally small groups of individuals and probably had an intensified focus on hunting. The chronological development from the end of the early stage to the advanced stage of the Mondsee group, which corresponds to the settlements mentioned, indicates that the notched edged pottery of the last settlement phase can also be seen as part of the Mondsee group. This pottery already echoes that of the Cham group and probably developed under the influence of the Boleráz group, which in its turn is recognisable at the Schweighofer Mauer by at least one probably “genuine” import. This group of small-scale, high-lying settlements was abandoned in the course of economic or societal changes during the transition from the Late to the Final Neolithic periods.

A small early La Tène period cemetery with six cremation and 34 inhumation burials was found in Oberndorf in der Ebene, Lower Austria. The grave goods are of average standard, compared to other contemporary cemeteries in the same region. In addition to pottery, the women were given various items of jewellery and in some cases tools such as spindle whorls. Male burials included objects such as belt elements, fibulae and occasionally weapons such as spears. Fragments of textiles are sometimes found attached to dress accessories. The simple linen and wool tabbies match the contemporary early La Tène period textile culture, known in the surrounding regions. Due to their position on the body, the textile remains preserved on metal grave goods can be associated with garments in which the deceased was dressed for burial. The textiles suggest a change in burial customs and textile culture between the Hallstatt and the La Tène period; in comparison to the early Iron Age, there seems to be less of a variety of different textile types, weave structures, patterns and qualities. To put this in context with social structures, we can suggest that the decrease of grave goods and the simplification of textile qualities can be associated with a change in the social system between the Hallstatt and the La Tène Period – a flattening of the social pyramid.

The paper deals with a group of graves in Eastern-Austria and South-Moravia dating from the 15th to 16th century which contain upside-down ceramic pots. In some burials beneath the pots wooden or waxen chalices and in one case also a patene were found, so that these burials can be interpreted as priest's burials.

Roman period bronze vessels in moravia and in lower austria north of the danube

It is already 42 years ago that Roman bronze vessels in Moravia and on the territory of Lower Austria north of the Danube were comprehensively evaluated by J. Tejral. The finds to be treated come from various types of archaeological contexts (settlements, graveyards, disturbed graves, surface finds, hoards). One of our goals is to make a general evaluation of these archaeological environments as known from the Middle Danubian Barbaricum.

Das zweibändige Werk, erschienen in der vom NÖ Landesarchiv herausgegebenen Reihe „Geschichte Niederösterreichs“, geht der spannungsreichen Epoche vom späten 18. Jahrhundert bis zum Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs nach. Mehr als 50 Autorinnen und Autoren beschäftigten sich am Stand aktueller Forschungen mit den politischen, wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Entwicklungen Niederösterreichs, die in ihrer Breite das Bild einer regionalen Gesellschaft auf dem Weg in die Moderne zeichnen.
Der erste Band widmet sich Verwaltung, Militär, Politik, Wirtschaft und Infrastrukturen. Er stellt die Frage nach Formen von Macht: Wie wurde sie aufgebaut, wie um sie gekämpft? Schon Joseph II. wollte einen Staat, der bis in die Dörfer hineinreichen sollte. Dies gelang erst mit neuen Verwaltungsstrukturen, von der Gemeinde bis zur Bezirkshauptmannschaft. Hinzu kamen die Steigerung von Produktion und Handel sowie Eisenbahn, Bildungswesen und Sozialversicherung. In der Revolution 1848 und durch politische, konfessionelle und gewerkschaftliche Organisationen strebten die Menschen nach Mitbestimmung.

During the archaeological aerial survey in 1996 and 2005, only parts of the crop marks were visible as linear structures. The entire double circular trench system was only later on aerial photographs of the company Geodis Brno in the years 2006 and 2011 recognizable. The rondel lies at an altitude between 172 and 185 m approximately 340 to 460 m northwest of the northern edge of the village on the right side of the terrace of the river Dyje/Thaya below the hills "Brunner Berg" (250 m above sea level) and "Waltersberg" (350 m above sea level). The rondel consists of two slightly irregular circular trenches. The results of the geomagnetic measurements are in complete agreement with the aerial photographs. The outer trench reaches a diameter of 120 m, the inner trench a diameter of about 80-90 m. The trenches width is 5 m, the winglike trench edges are about 2 m wide. Along the inner edge of the inner ditch, another palisade grave was found. Among the few ceramic fragments are a rounded rim of a cup or small pot and other fragments of vessels of the Moravian - East-Austrian group (MOG Ia) of Painted Pottery culture to mention. As an exception, an arrowhead made of a silicite also appeared here, which proves a settlement activities of the bell-beaker culture or the Aunitzitzer culture. Analogies of the double rondel with trench flanks are in neighbouring Lower Austria in the vicinity of the villages Kleinrötz, Pranhartsberg 1 and Steinabrunn in the Weinviertel. This fact points to close relations with the Rondellen in the east of Austria and the unity of the cultural development in the oikumene (Lower Austria - South Moravia) of the phase MOG Ia.

Das Werk des in der Ersten Republik und der Tschechoslowakei tätigen Architekten Karl Lehrmann (1887-1957) hat stärkere Beachtung verdient, umso mehr es sich bei ihm durch eine langjährigen Lehrtätigkeit an der Staatsgewerbeschule, der heutigen HTL Mödling, um einen einflussreichen Multiplikator architektonischer Vorstellungen gehandelt hat. Bauten sind in Mödling, Wien und der Tschechischen Republik erhalten und mit dem Entwurf des Perchtoldsdorfer Notgelds hat Lehrmann auch einen Platz in der österreichischen Geldgeschichte.
