Lower Danube

Since 2009, the Institute of Eco-Museal Research Tulcea together with partners from research laboratories from France and Romania has developed the project Société et environnement durant le Néolithique dans le Delta du Danube (Delta du Danube) [Society and environment in the Danube Delta during the Neolithic]. From 2010, this project has also obtained the support of the Foreign Affairs Ministry in France, who created the “Danube Delta” archaeological mission. This article presents the results of the first research campaign within the above-mentioned project in the Eneolithic site at Mila 23, Taraschina point (Tulcea County).

Abstract: The papers in my hands contain a memorandum written by William Linsday, Secretary of Legation at St.Petersburg, 1788-1791 first published by Jeremy Black in Archives, London, XXII (1996), no.95 (Oct.) and by Paul Cernovodeanu in Revista de Istorie, t.7, no.7-8, July-Aug., Bucharest, 1996. The memorandum describes for the first time the coasts of the Black Sea, trade and commercial opportunities in the Black Sea after the treaty of Küçük Kaynarca in 1774.In this paper I underline the new details and aspects regarding the Southern coast of the Black Sea and emphasize the Turkish names of ports and settlements on the Southern coast of the Black Sea.

The current technological study conducted on the ceramic corpus (Gumelniţa A2) of Carcaliu (Dobrudja) is a part of a multidisciplinary Franco Romanian project, devoted to the populations’ dynamic (during Neolithic and metal Ages) of agro-pastoral communities from the Lower Danube. This approach has its roots in anthropology techniques; it is the material expression of social relationships. In Carcaliu, first results on the study of shaping and finishing "chaînes opératoires" shows the existence of a local ceramic production framework. This production reflects a mastery of varied and complex know-how. These initial observations will be compared with data from Chalcolithic settlements from Lower Danube. It will be then possible to define the relationships among the communities established in such a zone of interference.

Tells are one of the main forms of habitat during the Chalcolithic period in the Balkans. The tell from Taraschina, in the Danube Delta, has a special position. The site is now partially submerged in the waters of the delta. In order to document the entire stratigraphic sequence, the French-Romanian scientific team studying this tell had to apply specific methods. This article presents the first results of the coring documenting the stratigraphy and organization of the Chalcolithic habitats from Taraschina.

My intention here is to reassess the early life of Dalmatius and propose a possible birthdate; then explore his promotion to Caesar, and the reasons for it, in order to provide a somewhat fuller image of the young man whose star had risen in the last years of his uncle’s reign and yet met an ignominious end in the summer of A.D. 337; and finally, to revisit the consequences of that end, particularly the turbulent atmosphere and its bearing on an alleged Sarmatian campaign that summer by Constantius and his handling of military revolts in the East.

Between 2014 and 2016, Ukraine's Danube Biosphere Reserve (DBR) administrators devoted extensive time to lawsuits in which they defended the legality of commercial fisheries in reserve territory. Two cases are discussed in order to examine what impact litigation had and why administrators pursued litigation when dominant accounts of law in Ukraine suggest that avoiding the courts might be a more likely response. It analyzes court documents and interviews gathered during anthropological research about nature conservation in the Danube Delta by combining insights from political ecology, agrarian studies, and socio-legal scholarship on Ukraine. Even though administrators lost their cases and had to rezone the reserve, engaging in litigation helped them defend fishing commons against further enclosure by environmentalists, state officials, and business people, and to minimize predatory behavior that could exclude delta residents. This demonstrates litigation's important but often overlooked role in challenging the outcomes of natural resource-related internal state territorialization.

This paper analyzes how a herd of feral cattle emerged in the core zone of Ukraine’s Danube Biosphere Reserve and why it still exists despite numerous challenges to the legality of its presence there. Answering these questions requires an analytical approach that begins from the premise that animals, plants, substances, documents, and technologies are active participants in making social and political worlds rather than passive objects of human intervention and manipulation. Drawing together insights from multispecies ethnography, animal geography, amphibious anthropology, and studies of nature protection in former Soviet republics, the author argues that the feral cattle exist because they are part of an amphibious multispecies assemblage in which relations among cattle, elements of the delta’s wetland ecologies, legal norms, and the Reserve managers’ documentation practices have aligned to create an autonomous space for cattle to dwell with minimal human intervention.

Знахідки монет другої половини XIV – початку XІХ ст. на території Ізмаїла (за матеріалами колекції Ізмаїльського історико-краєзнавчого музея Придунав’я). The finds of coins of the second half of XIV – beginning of XIX centuries on the territory of Izmail (based on the materials of the Izmail local museum of Danube region).

The article focuses on the finds of coins on the territory of Izmail, which are stored in the Izmail local museum of Danube region. Part of the coins was found during the archaeological researches on the territory of the Izmail fortress in 1989 and 1991, the other part was given to the museum by private individuals. The numismatic finds in Izmail can define periods in the medieval and modern history, when this area was inhabited.

For a while now, lithic raw material studies have been focused mainly on the geochemical and petrographic characterization of specimens from host‐rock deposits (primary geological position) and archaeological sites, and on identifying the supply source. For the Lower Danube Valley, chert occurrence and availability in alluvial deposits (secondary geological position) was assessed through field surveys and external morphology analysis of the collected samples. These investigations have shown that cherts are available in most of the gravel deposits from the Lower Danube Valley, in various forms, sizes and states of preservation. Those cherts were transported from the Bulgarian Tableland over short (Ciuperceni) to long (Ghizdaru) distances by the Balkan paleo‐rivers and deposited as alluvial fans in southern Romanian (Frăteşti Formation), and reworked and redeposited as terrace deposits by the Danube. The evidence also shows that the Upper Palaeolithic people living in the sites along the Lower Danube Valley used these allochthonous sources to extract chert clasts fitted for their needs of tool knapping.

Dans la période juin – septembre l’Institut de Recherches Eco-Muséelles Tulcea a réalise des fouilles de sauvetage dans l’habitat de type Babadag de Niculiţel – Cornet. Cette étude propose de présenter deux fosses où on a découvert des vestiges ostéologiques humains. Des fosses de ce genre ont été découvertes aussi dans l’habitat du Cornet en nombre de
quatre et aussi dans la région de la culture Babadag, où ce phénomène est bien documenté. Jusqu'à présent on n’a pas découvert dans la culture Babadag des nécropoles à proprement – parler, distinctes de l’habitat. Les fouilles contiennent des squelettes intacts ou incomplets qui se trouvent en connexion anatomique totale ou partielle ou qui sont dissipés au fond de la fouille.
On n’a pas observé quand même une éventuelle intervention ultérieure dans la fouille, c’est pour ça qu’on suppose que les corps ont été déposés en divers états de décomposions ou ont été déposés successivement avant de combler les fosses.
