While excavation is the most visible and iconic activity of an archaeologist’s work, it is only a part of it: the laboratory is the place where archaeologists devote the most time to processing their finds analyzing their data and suggesting interpretations. Since this aspect of archaeology takes place out of the public eye, it is also the least well known. To make this work more visible, archaeologists from the Université du Québec à Rimouski set up their laboratory at the Musée régional de Rimouski in October 2021 and carried out their post-excavation work there in public, while interacting with
visitors. This article looks back at this experience of public archaeology.

L’étude présentée a comporté trois volets.
The coasts of Gaspe Peninsula, and more generally of Maritime Quebec, are particularly exposed to coastal erosion and flooding. Because of the historical importance of the St. Lawrence as a shipping lane and the establishment of populations along its shoreline, heritage stakes (archaeological resources, buildings, monuments and places of memory) are particularly sensitive. The study presented was three-fold. The first stage identified the state of preservation of a dozen known coastal archaeological sites located in risk areas, while the second evaluated the archaeological potential of areas exposed to coastal hazards, where five new sites of interest were identified. The third stage focused on built heritage exposed to these hazards: 39 buildings or exposed heritage sites were identified. A review of management methods for heritage resources exposed to coastal hazards is proposed in conclusion.

In its sixth-century state, the episcopal complex of Byllis included an area where the bishop’s economic and agricultural activities were concentrated. This insula episcopalis took shape around a courtyard formed by the levelling, towards the end of the fifth century, of buildings on the south side of the decumanus that gave access to the liturgical spaces of the cathedral. In their place was built a large building with a floor dedicated to habitation. To the north, the courtyard was bordered by a warehouse and a winery whose facade extended that of the cathedral complex. Belonging to the last phase, an irregular building closed the courtyard to the southwest, leaving only a passage to the cathedral. Dedicated to the service of the bishop, this sector constituted a coherent urban unit, dependent on the episcopal see but distinct from the liturgical space, cut off from the public space but possessing its own direct access to the cardo bordering on the early Byzantine ramparts.

This article offers reflections on the experience of a long-term archaeological investigation in an academic context and is interested in the evolution of the objectives, expectations, and interests of its various actors. The project combined research, education, and development, seeking a balance among these three dimensions of the project that fed each other. This balance allowed a place for the interests of each of the actors: those of the university professor-researchers and students, those of the local municipality and its tourism promotion agency, and those of the general public. Over time, the education mission of the project has taken on a more important role and the development has gradually taken the form of an archaeological performance. The authors question the long-term viability of this type of development.
