For nearly 270 years, between the end of the Roman Empire and the advent of the Carolingian dynasty, the Merovingian territories experienced an intense flowering of religious construction, which recent archaeology has documented with increasing detail. This chapter sheds light on new research and recent discoveries; however, rather than reviewing all of the sites and studies of Merovingian churches and the contemporary sources mentioning them, it gives some new clues and reflections about so-called Merovingian architecture and the broad vision of an architectural form that was expressed in quite simple but majestic designs. These structures, constructed of stone (or wood), reveal a society progressively Christianized under the leadership of bishops, clerics, and monks, as well as by the Merovingian sovereigns. Without any break with classical antiquity, the Merovingian centuries fit into a continuous legacy that transformed the monumental landscape in both cities and countryside. Th...

The CARE project (Corpus Architecturae religiosae Europeae / CARE - IV-X saec.), an international program initiated in 2002, intends to identify and catalog churches built in Europe during the first millenium. 15 countries are involved, 6 other are interested. A joint team of French computer scientists and archaeologists created in 2008-2011 the online computer database shared in 4 langages (italian, spanish, german and english) – an annotated database using a Wiki interface (WikiBridge) and the semantic Web 2.0, with online inputs and queries in SARQL mode and a GIS for instant webmapping. The Corpus of textual and graphical data will gradually be known on the online database (http://care.tge-adonis.fr). Ultimately, this online scientific tool will facilitate comparisons, exchanges and discussions. Country teams work separately. The aim of this session is to allow them to gather these works in progress, to confront experiences, successes, problems with other searchers, in order to progress. The database, which allows an easy processing of different sets of documents, old or very new, such as photographs and 3D, is now tested for other types of data. Its flexibility and adaptability would make it easy to use for other periods.

"The interpretation of the history of Early Medieval States forms an integral part of the cultural identity of the present European nation states. Through the development of research in this field and recent political development those – over a long period built – paradigms have become subject to changes. The topic of this section is based on the needs of the project “Cradles of European Culture” (Program Culture 2007–2013), and we have to ask, whether it is possible to change our traditional view of early statehood in Central Europe and its bindings to the territory within the frontiers of the limes romanum and the subsequent Frankia on grounds of new findings in archaeology and history. Territory of interest are mainly the so-called dependencies according to the Treaty of Verdun from 843.

Individual contributors will be asked, whether they consider it possible on grounds of revision excavations of various sites, with the contribution of findings from a broadly conceived interdisciplinary study to re-define the basic chronology. Further topics are confined to the comparison of the formation of early settlement structures, the comparison of the processes in connection with the hill-forts and the so-called incastellamenta, possibilities of the research of trade and the spread of artistic, building, and production technologies. Important is also the process of Christianisation, which is considered a basic manifestation of the entrance into the realm of European culture."

CO ORGANIZED WITH Sapienza Universita' di Roma-Alma Mater Studiorum-Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro Between the 4th and the 15th century, especially in the period often remembered as the "dark ages", the role and symbolic meaning of light grew significantly throughout the Mediterranean. Light invades cities and enters more and more in daily life, but it is also the incorporeal means of a dialogue with heaven and the expression of a new spirituality and therefore had a huge role during the liturgy which developed inside religious medieval buildings. "Aut lux hic nata est, aut, capta, hic libera regnat" At that time, new experiments allowed the technology of the blown glass to be refined and to create increasingly transparent window panes that allow light to penetrate even in the darkest corners of the buildings. Moreover, even the artificial light generated for centuries by metal or ceramic instruments from the combustion of the most different oils begins to associate itself with glass, a curiously precursory union of the modern light bulb. During the night the buildings begin to be more and more often littered with chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, as the most recent studies on the great Constantinopolitan and Roman churches testified.
