In our project, a detailed genetic study and a careful examination of a performance of Luigi Nono’s "A Pierre. Dell’azzurro silenzio, inquietum" - for contrabass flute, contrabass clarinet and live electronics (1985) - intertwine to create a new approach to musical analysis intended specifically for music for conventional notation is inadequate.
The purpose of the project is to provide a reliable and stable record of one instantiation of the work. (The performance took place at the Banff Centre (Canada) on 28 February 2009). This information is being examined in conjunction with data gleaned from a study of sources pertaining to the creative process conserved primarily at the Archivio Luigi Nono: sketches, drafts, fair copies, test and experimental recordings, interviews with Nono’s collaborators, records of rehearsals, as well as a careful examination of the equipment used at the time to manage the live electronic component of the composition.

The essay explores some creative and performative peculiarities of works whose genesis and performance are influenced by the new technologies of sound production and transformation (live electronics in particular). The reflection is lead on the basis of questions around the concept of 'Authorship' [Authoriality], and involves some problematic tangles related to the performance of works, which are usually not notated in the traditional way, or whose writing is often missing or destined for paperless media (i.e. performer’s memory, disk, electronic programs, etc.).
The paradigmatic examples chosen to highlight different typologies and various issues concerning the performance practice of new music – as well as to reflect on some aporias related to the fixation and transmission of the presumed “author’s will” – are mainly drawn from the catalogue of works by Luigi Nono and Luciano Berio (with occasional references to some works by Karlheinz Stockhausen).
In the essay are examined scores (edited, retrieved or unpublished), audio documents and archive materials, as well as direct statements of composers and performers.

This article discusses preparation and development for my audio and video recording of one of the most important pieces for piano and tape from the twentieth century: ...sofferte onde serene... by Italian composer Luigi Nono. The text contextualizes the piece in Nono’s output, discusses important aspects of the composition and proposes learning and performing strategies for pianists interested in this repertoire.

This essay glosses the political conceptualism of Amelia Rosselli through the lens of her ‘new geometrism’, inflected by the open-field poetics of Charles Olson on the one hand, and by the dialectic between non-intentionality and constraint, freedom and imprisonment explored by practitioners of the New Music on the other. The phrase ‘Disintegratedcantons’ in an early riposte to the neoavanguardia links Rosselli’s formal research with a political aspiration (or trauma) : the dream (or nightmare) of a ‘total’ language, poised to host all possible rhythms, yet ultimately giving rise to the discomposing syntheses of transnational clashes. Atomic metaphors in Pasolini’s readings of Rosselli's first published Italian poems elicit the force of these clashes : Rosselli generates a post-Enlightenment poetics, exposing the violent unreason stemming from the programmatic disenchantment of history.

Abordamos neste trabalho os processos criativos de Luigi Nono a fim de esboçar um modo de “compor de ouvido”, ou “com-posição” como posicionamento recíproco com o outro, através de uma escuta engajada. Agregamos a essa teoria seu interesse na experimentação com texto e voz, no processo criativo-colaborativo com os intérpretes e na experimentação em estúdio eletroacústico. Destacamos as revelações encontradas em seus próprios escritos e como suas ideias se concretizaram em suas composições entre 1965-1985, em especial nas obras “A floresta é jovem e cheia de vida” (1965-66) e “A Pierre. Dell’azzurro silenzio, inquietum” (1985). Concluímos que para Nono o compor de “ouvido” é tão importante quanto o compor de “cabeça”.

In this interview with Marco Angius, the music conductor was asked about the role of technology in musical performances, the problems in the use of technological media and the evolution of his artistic-professional trajectory in electro-acoustic musical productions. Mr. Angius offers insight into a number of topics that stem from his interaction with technology, the splitting of the “sign” from sound and the resulting notational and interpretational problems. He also focuses on his work during the re-performance of Prometeo. Tragedia dell’ascolto by Luigi Nono in Parma in 2017. His thoughts come from a privileged point of view, the person who has at the same time the highest “control” over score and performers, and who embodies the medium between the latter and the electronic instruments.

Cet article s’attache à présenter la théorie du théâtre musical élaborée par Luigi Nono et mise en œuvre dans Al gran sole carico d’amore (1975). Il s’agit aussi de saisir la relation essentielle entre la réforme esthétique proposée par le compositeur italien et son engagement politique.

Although its small lenght and volume, the improvisative part in Un volto, e del mare (1969) by Luigi Nono dramatically compromises the actual possibilities of performing the whole Musica-Manifesto n. 1, to which Un volto, e del mare belongs. Actually, this improvisative part reveals a general tendency of the Venetian composer to abandon the written score, supported by the electronic instruments' characteristics and the deep relationships Nono used to build with his performers during long-term collaborations with them. In the 80's, this tendency will lead to the creation of works in which the traditional relations between composer, text and performer will be revolutionized, definitively preventing us from performing those compositions nowadays. Throughout an accurate comparison of the main steps of a 40-year-long executive story, the author underlines the reasons and the consequences of the shown problems, finally coming to suggest some original performative solutions.

aBsTracT – Among all the problems that Musica-Manifesto n. 1 (1969) poses, argu- ably the most evident concerns the apparent incoherence between the two parts of the composition: sound materials, performing rules and performers’ voices factually change. Why did therefore Luigi Nono consider Un volto, e del mare and Non consumiamo Marx as two parts of the same composition? The lack of a writ- ten score makes the situation even more complicated. In such a context, sketches and old recordings, but also letters, interviews and writings, acquire a particularly great importance. Starting from the reconstruction of the historical context and compositional process, and proceeding through a detailed study of the extant sources, the Author proposes a general interpretation of the composition, also including some relevant considerations regarding its execution.

"Intolleranza 1960" (1960-61), dedicated to Arnold Schoenberg, is the first theatrical work by Luigi Nono. The designation ‘Scenic Action’ not only refers to the renunciation of a narrative form of music theatre, but also to the objective of this composition: it is an appeal to take action and to create a self-determined structure in society.
This new revised and corrected edition, conducted on a critical basis by the editor, follows archival researches lasting more than fourteen years and conducted on all existing sources.

The revolution of sound recording, analogue synthesis and the birth of computer music, caused the emergence of a new professional profile, the Musical Assistant – someone who collaborates with composers in the phase of researching, writing, creating new sounds, recording and/or performing live during concerts – whose presence remains hidden most of the time. How can we find traces of this collaboration in analysing electroacoutic music? I propose a unified methodology at the intersection of Music Analysis based on electronic and computer sources and instruments; the ethnographic research, being collaboration based on oral traditions and activities; the philology of music and source criticism. The article focuses on three Musical Assistants: Marino Zuccheri (1950s), Alvise Vidolin (1980s), Carl Faia (2000s). The choice is motivated by the significance of their work with composers such as Luciano Berio and John Cage (Zuccheri), Luigi Nono and Salvatore Sciarrino (Vidolin), Philippe Leroux and Jonathan Harvey (Faia). The collaboration I discuss here does have many facets and is rarely the same from author to author, from project to project. There are however several aspects that emerge such as diachronic versus synchronic collaboration, the mode of thoughts emerging from material and oral sources, intentions, actions, and constraints, psychology and authorship.

Abstract (español): Este trabajo pretende acercarse a la manera en que la música de tradición culta ha respondido al impac-to de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Para ello, estudiaremos tres obras cercanas en el tiempo a los acon-tecimientos, pero de autores distantes tanto en el espacio como en la estética: Il canto sospeso (1955-56) de Luigi Nono, el Treno a las víctimas de Hiroshima (1959) de Krzysztof Penderecki, y el Réquiem de guerra (1961-62) de Benjamin Britten, las cuales abordaremos desde la perspectiva de la memoria, la intermedialidad texto-música, y sus parámetros musicales.

Abstract (english) This essay aims to approach how classical music has responded to the impact of World War II. We will study three pieces of work produced shortly after the event itself, but whose authors space and aesthetics are far removed: Luigi Nono's Il canto sospeso (1955-56), Krzysztof Penderecki's Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima (1959), and Benjamin Britten's War Requiem (1961-62), which we will approach from the perspective of memory, the relationship between text and music, and its musical parameters.

Il 1968 è stato un anno di svolta per la cultura mondiale. In Europa molte sono state le città teatro di grandi proteste studentesche e operaie che hanno richiesto – e in alcuni casi ottenuto – notevoli cambiamenti sociali. Nemmeno Venezia è rimasta estranea all'agitato clima politico e culturale creatosi in quei mesi: del suo coinvolgimento, in particolare legato alle sue funzioni di centro culturale internazionale, il musicista Luigi Nono, un intellettuale fortemente impegnato nelle lotte politiche e sociali di questi anni, è stato un grande testimone e protagonista. Un’esperienza che si vuole qui ricostruire a partire da una breve cronistoria dei fatti veneziani che occuparono l’estate e l’autunno di quell'anno e delle conseguenze che ebbero negli anni successivi.

Bien que distants et indépendants sous de multiples aspects, les chemins créatifs de György Kurtág et Luigi Nono se sont croisés, depuis la fin des années 1970 jusqu’à la mort de Nono en 1990, au carrefour poétique et musical de l’écriture fragmentaire. En témoignent les hommages réciproques qu’ils s’adressent : l’Omaggio a Luigi Nono op. 16 (1979-1981), pour chœur mixte a cappella sur des poèmes d’Anna Akhmatova et Rimma Dalos, et l’Omaggio a György Kurtág (1983-1986), pour voix de contralto, flûte, clarinette, tuba, et transformation électronique en temps réel. Élément minimal autonome et auto-suffisant selon Kurtág, qui l’exploite au maximum, expression du refus du caractère purement discursif de l’œuvre musicale d’après Nono, qui s’en sert pour rompre le cours linéaire des événements, le fragment est le pivot esthétique des choix analogues des deux musiciens. Attirés tous les deux par les fragments poétiques, ou bien enclins à extraire, de pièces en vers en elles-mêmes complètes, des morceaux lyriques qui accompagnent leurs compositions, Kurtág et Nono jouent sur les ambiguïtés du langage verbal et proclament l’affranchissement de la création musicale vis-à-vis de la totalité. Parmi les sources d’inspiration des deux compositeurs, il faut citer Akhmatova et Dalos, « muses » de l’Omaggio de Kurtág à Nono ; Hölderlin, point de repère du quatuor à cordes Fragmente-Stille, an Diotima de Nono et des Hölderlin-Gesänge op. 35 de Kurtág ; mais aussi Kafka et Tarkovski dont le film Nostalghia recèle la célèbre scène de la bougie, paradigme cinématographique de l’existence humaine et artistique de Kurtág et de Nono.

Fragmente-Stille, an Diotima (1979-1980) is a key work in the career of Luigi Nono
(1924-1990). Nono composes his first string quartet so far after a period of silence in
which he has reconsidered and delved into his work as a composer and thought about
the bonds between music and personal and political issues. The deconstruction of the
dichotomy between the intimate and social spheres, the conception of sound as multiple
and based on relationships, and the building of a space and time axis in which
everything is possible, all this appealing to an attentive and risky listening, are the main
lines drawn up by the Nonian quartet.

Mit der Uraufführung seines „stillen Stückes“ vor 60 Jahren hat John Cage den „Paradigmenwechsel vom Klang zur Stille in der Musik des neunzehnten und zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts" (Marin Zenck) auf radikale Weise nachvollzogen und zugleich einen Wendepunkt in seinem eigenen Schaffen gesetzt. Von einem Wendepunkt in seinem Schaffen wird auch oft in Bezug auf Luigi Nonos Streichquartett „Fragmente – Stille, An Diotima“ (1979-80) gesprochen. Wenn sich beide Komponisten der Stille zuwenden, lassen sie Räume des Hörens entstehen, die freilich unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten. Während es Cage, beeinflusst vom Zen-Buddhismus, um die Indeterminiertheit und Nicht-Intendiertheit des Hörens geht, so intensiviert Nono die Stille zu einem „fortissimo of agitated perception“ (Helmut Lachenmann). Der intendierte, intensivierte Hörraum Nonos gewinnt eine Unausweichlichkeit, die ihn und Massimo Cacciari von einer „Tragödie des Hörens“ sprechen lassen. Wie verhält sich aber diese Unausweichlichkeit der Tragödie zum Prinzip des Fragmentarischen, das sowohl die Text- als auch die Musikgestaltung bestimmt? Schließlich stellt sich nach „Il canto sospeso“ (1955-56) erneut und auf neue Weise die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Text und Musik, wenn die Hölderlin-Fragmente im Streichquartett von den Musikern nur innerlich gesungen werden sollen und das verschwiegene Wort so „in reicher Stille“ (Hölderlin) aufgehoben wird.

Montowanie ze sobą rozmaitych wielokrotnie zapośredniczonych cytatów brzmieniowych, stosowanie zapętleń, spowolnień, przyspieszeń i zniekształceń lub odtwarzanie mowy od tyłu (co pojawia się na przykład w Kabarecie Kici Koci, kiedy bohaterki modlą się o wielkie nic złego i „ogełz cin”) przypomina techniki, jakimi w połowie XX wieku zaczęli posługiwać się twórcy muzyki konkretnej. Zrezygnowali oni z wymyślania abstrakcyjnej idei, którą, wyrażoną w symbolice zapisu nutowego, ożywiało dopiero wykonanie, na rzecz uczynienia materiałem wyjściowym konkretnych brzmień, precyzyjnie nagrywanych i poddawanych rozmaitym kombinacjom. Białoszewski zdaje się podobnie traktować materię dźwiękową, chociaż podczas swoich magnetofonowych sesji posługuje się wyłącznie własnym głosem. Sposób, w jaki go używa, kojarzyć się może z kolei z rozwijającą się w tym czasie także bardzo intensywnie dzięki możliwościom rejestracji wykonania poezją dźwiękową, jednak eksperymentów Białoszewskiego nie udałoby się jednoznacznie przypisać do żadnego z jej wykształconych na Zachodzie nurtów. Wykorzystywane przez niego żywe „docieki”, zasłyszane fragmenty rzeczywistości, urywki zdań traktowane jak dźwięki, z których lepi on swoje wypowiedzi, włączone zostają do utworów jak szumy otoczenia do nagrania magnetofonowego. Słyszalna staje się w nich sama pulsująca rzeczywistość. Porównując nagrania Dziennika z innymi zarejestrowanymi utworami usłyszeć można wyraźnie, że Chór Wianczarek z Osmędeuszy wzorowany był na szeptach starszych kobiet, które przyszły obejrzeć ciało zmarłej Zofii Nałkowskiej, zaś naśladowane w Porcie Praskim odgłosy żab, napędzających się wzajemnie we wspólnym kumkaniu jak baby na straganie, są niemalże dokładnym powtórzeniem okrzyków pojawiających się w relacji z wizyty na bazarze Różyckiego. „Jedna zaczyna «cy-try-ny, cy- try-ny». Druga «cy-na-mon». Trzecia, czwarta. I «cy-na-mon-cytry-ny-u-bra-nia, cy-namon-ubra-cy-nia-try-ny-cy-bra-cy-try-na-mon... ke-ke-ke... ke-kra-ke»” – tak poeta odtwarza moment, kiedy podsłuchiwane płazy „wpadają w trans”. Skupiając się na brzmieniu tych strzępków słów, powtarzanych coraz szybciej aż do całkowitego rozmycia znaczenia, Białoszewski wyławia z otoczenia unikalne głosy, którymi na co dzień przemawia tętniące życiem ciało społeczne. Miętoszone w ustach bazarowych bab wyrazy zaczynają być odbierane jako natarczywe dźwięki stanowiące wyłom w dyskursie. Jak twierdzi Michel de Certeau, dzięki tym odgłosom, które jak duchy „powracają w codziennym życiu przez dźwiękowe cytaty, trwa pewna tradycja ciała. Można ją usłyszeć, lecz nie można jej dostrzec. Są to właściwie cielesne wspomnienia” ujawniające się w powszednim społecznym użyciu, ale niepozwalające się sprowadzić do żadnego uogólnionego sensu. Należą one, według rozróżnienia wprowadzonego przez Julię Kristevę, nie do fenotekstu, lecz do genotekstu, czyli nie do poziomu skostniałych definicji i konwencjonalnych struktur języka (rejestru symbolicznego), lecz do jego podskórnego rytmu dynamicznych sił popędowych, warunkujących nieustanne wytwarzanie znaczeń (rejestru semiotycznego). Te wciąż przenikające się nawzajem sfery języka w monologu Szpitala z dramatu Białoszewskiego odpowiadałyby kolejno silnie sformalizowanemu, hermetycznemu dyskursowi przedstawicieli instytucji oraz „spypciałej” mowie i fizjologicznym odgłosom dobywającym się z sali chorych. Taśma, której krążenie nieustannie napędza Pani Koch, w przeciwieństwie do ludzkiego ucha rejestruje bez selekcjonowania zarówno oficjalne formuły lekarzy, jak i niewyraźne szmery pacjentów. Zdaniem Kristevej, rola poezji polega na odzyskiwaniu drożności pomiędzy zaskorupiałą powierzchnią języka a jego żywą materialnością pulsująca w głębi ciała. Schemat procesu wytarzania znaczeń jako ciągły przepływ pomiędzy poziomem fenotekstu i genotekstu najlepiej obrazuje właśnie mechanizm działania taśmy magnetofonowej, obrotowym ruchem nawijanej wciąż z jednej szpuli na drugą.

Die bundesdeutsche Rezeption von Luigi Nonos Komposition »La victoire de Guernica« (1954) macht auf die Verdrängungsmechanismen aufmerksam, die bis in die 1970er Jahre hinein mit der Mitschuld beim Angriff auf die baskische Stadt verbunden waren. Obgleich Nonos politische Ambitionen durch Wahl des Textes von Paul Éluard und durch bestimmte kompositionstechnische Details deutlich werden, werden Uraufführung und Folgeaufführungen durch Kritik und begleitende Programmtexte weitgehend entpolitisiert.
