Critical edition of music

Concerto in G Major for oboe, strings and basso continuo by Antonín Reichenauer (c. 1694-1730), which is edited for the first time, is a significant and rare sights instrumental works by Czech composers of the late Baroque. The work was composed probably in the third decade of the 18th century for Count Wenceslas Morzin band for whom Reichenauer worked at that time. This ensemble was one of the best bands in the Czech Republic and as "Maestro di Musica in Italia" for him composed music also Antonio Vivaldi, who dedicated this Morzin a collection of the Concertos op. 8 with the famous "Le quattro stagioni". Also, the Reichenauer's handwriting on the Concerto in G major is obvious direct influence of Vivaldi's music. This critical edition prepared a music historian and musician Lukáš M. Vytlačil to satisfy the scholarly community and also meet the needs of musicians. The score is therefore complemented by Czech and English commentary, complete facsimile copy of the Dresden manuscript and instrumental parts. The concerto is possible without transposition also play on the flute.

Vol. IV:11 in the Complete Edition of Niels W. Gade's works.

The volume comprises works by Niels W. Gade (1817–1890) for male choir and works for equal voice, all of which have instrumental accompaniment. A number of the works were composed for and performed by Danish choral societies during Gade’s lifetime. Large national choir festivals with hundreds of participating amateur singers took place in 1874, 1883 and 1890. At all three occasions, new works by Gade were performed, for instance Viborg Domkirke, a cantate in five movements, which depicts the storm-tossed existence of the cathedral in the Jutland city of Viborg.

Another major work in the volume is Aartidsbilleder, published as Bilder des Jahres in a piano-version in 1876. For the first time, this work is now available in the version that Gade himself conducted several times in the Musical Society in Copenhagen, namely with string quartet, piano four hands, soloists and female choir. During Gade’s lifetime the work was received positively, especially in Denmark, Germany and the United States of America. According to a reviewer at the first performance in 1871, the composition ‘will achieve a rank among the best works of the composer’.

The present volume furthermore contains five occasional works for male choir, three of them religious works for and the two remaining ones composed in 1842 for C.E.F. Weyse, Gade’s organ teacher. The new volume is edited by Bjarke Moe and contains fourteen works, many of which have never been published before.

"Intolleranza 1960" (1960-61), dedicated to Arnold Schoenberg, is the first theatrical work by Luigi Nono. The designation ‘Scenic Action’ not only refers to the renunciation of a narrative form of music theatre, but also to the objective of this composition: it is an appeal to take action and to create a self-determined structure in society.
This new revised and corrected edition, conducted on a critical basis by the editor, follows archival researches lasting more than fourteen years and conducted on all existing sources.

“Memory of a dear place” is the title given to this collection of three enchanting pieces for violin and piano. The “place” in question was the country estate of Brailov that belonged to Tchaikovsky’s patron and friend Nadezhda von Meck. He stayed there in idyllic seclusion in May 1878 and completed this work. These pieces were composed very close in time to his Violin Concerto, and they too demonstrate Tchaikovsky’s matchless gifts as a Romantic master of melody. For this edition, the Russian Tchaikovsky specialist Alexander Komarov offers the highest degree of editorial precision, having drawn on all the relevant sources from both Russian and international archives. In the course of his work he has also been able to disprove beyond a doubt the view held up to now that the title Souvenir d’un lieu cher was only added after Tchaikovsky’s death.

Vol. IV:9 in the Complete Edition of Niels W. Gade's works.

Gade's interest in choral music spanned his entire career. This volume presents more than 40 of his shorter works for mixed chorus, both without and with accompaniment (piano, organ, harmonium or, in one case, brass ensemble). They occupy a no less prominent place in his oeuvre than his large-scale choral works with orchestra. Written between 1839 and 1885, they were intended for many different areas of application: songs for school chorus stand alongside liturgical music, pièces d'occasion, chorales and freely composed works for amateur choirs. The best-known are his Five Songs (op. 13) on poems by Emmanuel Geibel and Ludwig Tieck and the motet O du, der du die Liebe bist, both composed in Leipzig in 1846.

This is a threefold transcription of Baude Cordier's "circle canon," two versions in rondeau form and one in perpetual canon. Included with the music transcriptions are full translations from Medieval French to English of all the accompanying texts as well as an English text underlay for the music.

Also included is a full explanation of the various mensurations and colorations that appear in the piece.

The design of the scores attempts to illustrate the rondeau form overlaying the canonic conceit.

This article presents a study and edition of the four-part motet Circumdederunt me by Hernando Franco (ca. 1530-1585), a musician born in peninsular Spain who worked as chapelmaster in Portugal, Santo Domingo, Cuba, and Guatemala before being appointed to that role at the Cathedral of Mexico (1575-1585).

Alongside the famous violin concerto, numerous other violin works by Tchaikovsky have found their way into the standard repertoire for violin. An outstanding example is the Valse-Scherzo, which sparkles with witty playfulness. He composed it in 1877 for the violinist Josef Kotek, a close friend and student. Our editor, the Russian Tchaikovsky scholar Alexander Komarov, has ensured that this Henle Urtext edition is absolutely faithful to the sources. He was able to consult all of the sources in the Russian archives and to bring clarity to the work’s complex genesis. This edition is the prelude to an edition of all of Tchaikovsky’s works for violin and piano, including the Sérénade mélancolique op. 26 and Souvenir d’un lieu cher op. 42.

A transcription of a lesser known masterpiece from the early 16th century. The only known work by composer Johannes Mittner, this Mass, and particularly its Sanctus movement, demonstrates one of the largest mensuration canons from the Renaissance - five voices from one.

La teoría reciente de la edición musical ha privilegiado las llamadas ediciones críticas como el estadio más elevado entre las alternativas existentes para el tratamiento de un texto musical. Si bien la edición crítica admite sin ambages que la intervención del texto por parte del editor resulta inevitable, también la considera hasta cierto punto indeseable. Este trabajo procura precisamente examinar el paradigma de la edición crítica con base en casos extremos de edición musical, donde se fuerzan los límites comúnmente admitidos de intervención del texto, poniendo a prueba dicha teoría. Para ello ensayamos un modelo de edición basado en lo que Paul Henry Lang llama “interpretación imaginativa”, estudiando sus consecuencias en un par de casos particulares.

Esta publicación, en forma de libro con partituras y CD-Audio, trata de llenar el hueco que el desconocimiento, sumado al olvido, podrían haber convertido en permanentes. La vida y obra de Antonio Chover Salom (1922-2014) es uno de esos ejemplos paradigmáticos que hacen precisa la recuperación del patrimonio musical español, comenzando por las figuras de la cultura más reciente de nuestro país. El fin de este trabajo es devolver a la memoria colectiva el compromiso de un compositor que eligió la guitarra como uno de los medios más expresivos para transmitirnos su universo sonoro, fruto de una época y una sociedad concreta.
Antonio Chover estuvo comprometido con su natal Tavernes de la Valldigna (Valencia) mediante la dinamizac ión cultural de la localidad en la posguerra y a través del estudio del folclore de la región, que publicó con el proyecto musicológico de su maestro, Manuel Palau. Tras conseguir el título de composición en el Conservatorio de Valencia obtuvo destino como Director de la Banda Militar de Cádiz, ciudad a la que se vinculó durante más de 40 años. Allí impartió clases de guitarra, armonía y composición y mantuvo una especial relación con el Conservatorio “Manuel de Falla”, que le otorgó la Medalla de Oro en 1989 sin formar parte de su claustro en ningún momento.
El hecho de poseer unos enormes conocimientos de los procedimientos tradicionales de la armonía, el contrapunto y la composición y el conocer a fondo la guitarra le permitieron conseguir obras idiomáticas que, sin embargo, mantienen una base compositiva muy sólida. Puede definirse su música para guitarra como una creación original que, partiendo de la tradición, va a ir conformando un estilo particular de expresarse. Para ello recurre al lenguaje fundamentado en la tonalidad pero altera sus reglas, acude a la música popular pero la reviste de modernidad, declama sobre una base lírica pero la distorsiona hasta hacerla personal. El lenguaje guitarrístico de Antonio Chover se concreta en un universo sonoro particular que, en su conjunto, forma un corpus homogéneo que es preciso recuperar, entender y disfrutar.
Este trabajo ha podido ser publicado gracias al patrocinio de la Diputación de Valencia y del Ayuntamiento de Tavernes de la Valldigna, y al empeño de la familia de Antonio Chover Salom por mantener presente su vida y obra para el futuro.

El disco ha sido grabado en agosto de 2017 en Estudios MECA, en San Asensio, y el técnico de sonido ha sido Javier Rojas Ruiz.

Todas las grabaciones de este CD han sido interpretadas por Carlos Blanco Ruiz con una guitarra Manuel Ramírez de 1911 —“la abuelita”— que perteneció al guitarrista Francisco Calleja. En las interpretaciones a dos guitarras la segunda guitarra (canal derecho) también ha sido interpretada por el mismo músico pero se ha empleado una preciosa guitarra —excelentemente trabajada con taraceas de madera y nácar en la pala y puente pero sin marca de guitarrero— con la indicación de “Seleccionador: A. Chover” y firmada por éste en la etiqueta. Este instrumento ha sido cedido por la familia para la ocasión.

This study is about the life and work of Leopold Koželuh, very popular composer, piano virtuoso and respected teacher, who was one of the leading persons of musical life in Vienna on the border of 18th and 19th Century. From the many musicians from the Bohemian Lands Koželuh received the highest post at the Habsburg viennese court. Last part of this paper is review about the complete edition of his piano sonatas, which was prepared by Christopher Hogwood.

Είναι γνωστό ότι πολλά από τα πρωτότυπα έργα Ελλήνων συνθετών για σύνολα πνευστών παραμένουν λιγότερο ή περισσότερο ανεκτέλεστα. Η διαπίστωση αυτή αφορά και σε έργα μεγάλης αισθητικής αξίας, που δεν έχουν κατορθώσει να αποτελέσουν τον πυρήνα ενός «κανονικού ελληνικού ρεπερτορίου» για σύνολα πνευστών. Τα διαθέσιμα έργα είναι λίγα σε σχέση με την αντίστοιχη παραγωγή χωρών του Εξωτερικού. Αλλά και η προσπέλαση σε αυτά και η εκτέλεσή τους παρουσιάζει επίσης δυσκολίες: αρκετά σώζονται αποκλειστικά σε χειρόγραφη, δυσανάγνωστη μορφή με λάθη· πολλά υπάρχουν μόνο σε δύσκολα προσβάσιμες συλλογές· δεν υπάρχουν κατάλογοι που να διευκολύνουν την έρευνα ούτε έχει προχωρήσει η ψηφιοποίησή τους· συχνά λείπει η παρτιτούρα ή τα μέρη. Ακόμα, σπανίζουν οι διαθέσιμες τεχνικού και ερμηνευτικού επιπέδου ηχογραφήσεις και λείπει ένα σύστημα αξιολόγησης του επιπέδου δυσκολίας και περιγραφής των έργων που να διευκολύνει τον ενδιαφερόμενο ερευνητή ή διευθυντή ορχήστρας.
Η παρούσα εργασία παρουσιάζει τη διαδικασία ανάδειξης του «Αρχαίου Ελληνικού Εμβατηρίου» του Νίκου Σκαλκώτα, ενός αγνοημένου πρωτότυπου έργου για ορχήστρα πνευστών. Η συνθετική παραγωγή του συνθέτη για σύνολα πνευστών, παρότι σημαντική, παραμένει ερευνητικά αλλά κυρίως ερμηνευτικά αναξιοποίητη. Μετά από μια σύντομη αναφορά στις υπόλοιπες συνθέσεις του Σκαλκώτα για μικρότερα ή μεγαλύτερα σύνολα πνευστών, παρουσιάζονται τα βήματα επεξεργασίας του έργου και της κριτικής προσαρμογής του στις ανάγκες μιας σύγχρονης ορχήστρας πνευστών και τίθενται ερωτήματα σχετικά με τις τεχνικές ενορχήστρωσης και μεταγραφής του συνθέτη, καθώς και ζητήματα εκτελεστικής πρακτικής του «Εμβατηρίου».

Desde al menos el siglo VI, se estableció la costumbre de rezar en las vísperas de los últimos siete días de Adviento (del 17 al 23 de diciembre) siete antífonas, una por día, conocidas con el nombre de antífonas de Adviento, antífonas mayores o, simplemente, antífonas de la O, por comenzar todas con esta letra. Pese a su protagonismo litúrgico, como antesala de la Navidad, en casi todas las iglesias las antífonas de la O se cantaban en canto llano o en contrapunto improvisado, siendo muy pocas las versiones polifónicas conservadas. La Catedral de México es una de las escasas instituciones del mundo hispano que ha conservado el ciclo polifónico completo, único por su rareza, tratamiento musical y cronología. No consta el autor, ni tampoco la fecha del ciclo, aunque una inscripción data su uso en 1787 y lo vincula con el desconocido músico Martín Bernárdez de Rivera, maestro de capilla interino en la década de 1780.
El objetivo de este trabajo es doble: por un lado, presentar un estudio de las particularidades de estas obras en su contexto histórico, litúrgico y estético y, por otro, discutir la pertinencia del tradicional concepto del género "antífona" -en relación con el ciclo novohispano- exclusivamente como texto, olvidando su contexto. Como apéndices, presento una transcripción completa del ciclo anónimo (apéndice 2) y otra de la antífona O Emmanuel que Ignacio de Jerusalén (1707-1769) compuso en 1750 con ocasión de su oposición al magisterio de capilla de la catedral mexicana (apéndice 1).

Includes a scholarly edition of a piano composition by Swedish Romantic composer Elfrida Andrée. An analysis of its sociocultural context considers how the composer - and this composition - questioned expectations typically applied to female composers of her time.

Podstawą edycji jest pięć arii Carla Dittersa von Dittersdorfa należących obecnie do kolekcji Gabinetu Zbiorów Muzycznych Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej w Warszawie o sygnaturach RM 7866–7868 i RM 4300 / 2. Kompozycje powstały w latach sześćdziesiątych–dziewięćdziesiątych XVIII wieku i były częścią zbiorów opactwa norbertanów we Wrocławiu.

Arie zostały utrzymane w ty­powej dla epoki fakturze homofonicznej, przeważnie w formie da capo. Podstawowa obsada instrumentalna kompozycji – dwoje skrzypiec, altówka i sekcja basowa – w ariach Ascendit Deus in iubilatione i Surrexit Christus de sepulchro została rozszerzona o partie fletów i ro­gów, natomiast w Lauda Sion Salvatorem dodano partię fagotu, w niewielkim stopniu samodzielną. Teksty świeckie włoskich arii operowych zastąpiono tu łacińskimi kompilacjami tekstów psalmowo-liturgicznych, fragmentów hymnów i sekwencji z marginalnymi ingerencjami w strukturę muzyczną.

Prezentowane arie wymagały od śpiewaków znacznych umiejętności technicznych, na co wskazuje szerokie ambitus partii wokalnych, koloraturowe pasaże, dość liczne ozdobniki, tryle czy duże skoki interwałowe. Repertuar ten najpewniej był wykonywany przez świeckich muzyków działających w opactwie.

El estudio de la creación musical de Laureano Fuentes Matons (Santiago de Cuba, 1825-1898), a cargo de la musicóloga Iránea Silva Santiago, es el tema de este quinto volumen de la colección «Patrimonio Musical Cubano», que está dedicada a la preservación, estudio y difusión de los documentos —manuscritos e impresos— que contienen música compuesta para actos civiles y religiosos en la sociedad cubana durante los siglos XVIII al XX.
La vida y obra de Laureano Fuentes, compositor, intérprete y musicólogo cubano, aparece reseñada en varias ocasiones en el ámbito historiográfico, pero su vasta producción musical ha permanecido inédita casi en su totalidad. Es considerado el compositor más importante del siglo XIX en Santiago de Cuba por lo abarcadora de su obra —que comprende casi todos los géneros al uso en su época tanto en el ámbito profano como religioso—, y por la calidad de las mismas. En el presente volumen (que pretende ser el primero de una serie dedicada a este autor), se da a conocer una parte de su repertorio mariano, en especial un Stabat Mater dolorosa, obra de excelente factura, representativa de la creación musical religiosa decimonónica de gran formato (coro, voces solitas y orquesta) en Santiago de Cuba.

This substantial volume contains all of the works that Tchaikovsky composed or arranged himself for violin and piano. The three larger violin works opp. 26, 34, and 42, which G. Henle Publishers also offers in individual practical editions, are particularly well-known and popular. By contrast, the three brief single movements with which Tchaikovsky presents charming adaptations of his own pieces promise to be genuine discoveries. Tchaikovsky’s violin works have long suffered under corrupt musical editions heavily reworked later by violinists – all the more important, therefore, that the editor responsible for this Urtext edition is Russian Tchaikovsky specialist Alexander Komarov. He consulted all of the relevant original sources in international archives, thereby guaranteeing the highest reliability of this musical text. Ingolf Turban, a violin virtuoso of the first order, supplied stylistically appropriate markings in the violin part.

The Fr. José Maurício Nunes Garcia (1767-1830) is one of the most important Brazilian composers in the first half of the 19th century. This article presents the modinhas composed by him, indicating the location of the oldest scores and offering his modern edition – one of these songs, titled Estas lágrimas sentidas, had his manuscript recently identified by this author. The present text also offers some subsidies for the execution of these modinhas, facilitating the access and the interpretation of the repertoire by both Brazilians and foreign singers. This is intended to be an important contribution to the task of deconstructing, or overcoming, the somewhat condescending or disinterested stance of some interpreters and researchers when talking about modinha specifically. A critical edition of 10 concertato motets for 3 to 5 voices by Kaspar Förster jnr (1616-1673). The edition is free to download as a pdf. It is also available in print (35 PLN + shipping, i.e. c. € 8).
Förster was born in Danzig (Gdansk) and studied in Rome for Giacomo Carissimi in the 1630s. From c. 1637-1652 he was a singer at the Polish court, and from 1652-1667 Hofkapellmeister in Denmark. He died in Oliwa 1673.
Förster's music is Italianate in style, with smooth vocal melodies and a sectionalized motet style with a variation of styles and textures. His music is highly expressive, with a harmonic language where he develops the Roman tradition in new direction. He was an important mediator of the new Italian musical style in Northern Europe.

El artículo relata el proceso de recuperación de una ópera inédita de José de Nebra, Venus y Adonis (Madrid, 1729), desde la investigación documental en archivos y el estudio crítico de fuentes hasta la preparación de una edición crítica para el estudio y una edición práctica destinada a la interpretación. El proceso concluye con la interpretación, en salas de conciertos, de la obra y su grabación y transmisión por diversos medios. El artículo incluye una reflexión sobre los criterios y
límites de la recuperación de patrimonio musical histórico.

This paper deals with the process of recovery of an unpublished opera by José de Nebra, Venus y Adonis (Madrid, 1729), starting from the documentary research in archives and the critical study of sources and continuing with the preparation of a critical and practical edition for both study and performance. The process concludes with the performance, in concert halls, of the work and its recording and transmission by various media. The article includes a reflection on the criteria and limits of the recovery of historical musical heritage.

The Moravian music collection in Christiansfeld is one of the largest privately owned, Danish collections including works dating back to the foundation of the town in 1773. At the end of the eighteenth century Christiansfeld, which the Moravian community built within very few years, was a place where music both in church and outside the auspices of the church was of a high standard in terms of both the quality of the music as well and the performances. Many flocked to the town, not only to shop but also to attend concerts, church services with hymn-singing and anthems and to be given a tour around the town by a tourist guide.

Danish Centre for Music Publication has edited a collection of twenty-two, very different sacred anthems or short cantatas which have never been published before. The works show not only the rather high standard of playing of the town’s ensemble, but also that many of the around 700 inhabitants must have participated in the music performances. The selected works that are representative of the entire music collection range from large double choir anthems to arias for a vocal soloist and orchestra. In addition to strings and organ (and harpsichord), the ensemble also included trumpets, natural horns, oboes, traversos and bassoons; they even had harps. Thus they could assemble a wide array of different sizes of orchestras. Today, many of the composers are somewhat obscure (Johann Ludwig Freydt, Johann Christian Geisler, Christian Gregor, Johann Gottfried Weber), but the resent selection includes also works by more famous composers such as Daniel Gottlob Türk and Johann Heinrich Rolle.

The works not only provide us with a fine insight into the musical activities of the Moravian community but they also give us a greater understanding of why contemporary society was so fascinated by the results of the congregation which, besides trade, industry and education, also embraced the importance of music in everyday life.

A critical edition of 12 concertato motets for 1 to 3 voices by Kaspar Förster jnr (1616-1673). The edition is free to download as a pdf. It is also available in print (40 PLN + shipping, i.e. c. € 9).
Förster was born in Danzig (Gdansk) and studied in Rome for Giacomo Carissimi in the 1630s. From c. 1637-1652 he was a singer at the Polish court, and from 1652-1667 Hofkapellmeister in Denmark. He died in Oliwa 1673.
Förster's music is Italianate in style, with smooth vocal melodies and a sectionalized motet style with a variation of styles and textures. His music is highly expressive, with a harmonic language where he develops the Roman tradition in new direction. He was an important mediator of the new Italian musical style in Northern Europe.

In 1602 the collection entitled Rime by the Neapolitan poet Giovan Battista Marino was published in Venice. This work immediately attracted the attention of a large number of contemporary composers: some madrigals by Marino, in particular, received numerous musical settings. Conversely, other poems by the Neapolitan were set to music only once and, moreover, by a very little known composer, Vincenzo Liberti from Spoleto. The article provides the sparse biographical information available for this musician, describes the contents of his two printed collections of madrigals (published in Venice in 1608 and 1609) and presents – for the first time – a critical edition of one of them, based on a text by Marino.
