The fractionation of nitrogen (as ammonia/ammonium) and phosphorus (as phosphate ions) present in the dairy manure digestate was investigated using a nanofiltration membrane NF270. The filtration and separation efficiencies were correlated to pH across the range 3 < pH < 11. Filtration at pH 11 enabled higher permeate flux of 125-150 LMH at 20 bar, however rejection of ammonia was high at 30-36% and phosphate was 96.4-97.2%. At pH 3 and pH 7, electrostatic charge effects led to higher permeation of ammonium and thus more efficient separation of nitrogen. The rejection of phosphorus was relatively constant at any given pH and determined as 83% at pH 3, 97% at pH 7 and 95% at pH 11. The effect of small and moderate doses of morphine (MF) on NK cell lytic activity (cytotoxicity, NKCC) ((51)Cr release test) and the number of circulating large granular lymphocytes (LGL) was evaluated in i.v. catheterized Pietrain crossbred pigs. Simultaneously, plasma cortisol (COR) (RIA method) was measured. Blood samples were collected 15, 60, 120, 180, and 240 min after i.v. injections of 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg/kg of MF alone or MF pretreated with naloxone (NX, 1.0 mg/kg, i.v., 15 min before MF). It was found that MF induced dose- and time-dependent changes of NKCC. MF in a dose of 0.5 mg/kg evoked 4-fold increase in NKCC (in comparison to saline) without changes in the number of LGL/NK cells. CD30+ cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders (CLPDs) include lymphomatoid papulosis, borderline cases of CD30+ CLPDs, and primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (PCALCL). Prior studies have shown CD30+ CLPDs have an excellent prognosis.We sought to present the single-center experience of Stanford University, Stanford, Calif, in the management of CD30+ CLPDs.A retrospective cohort analysis of 56 patients with CD30+ CLPDs treated at our institution was performed.No patients with lymphomatoid papulosis died of disease, and overall survival was 92% at 5 and 10 years. Disease-specific survivals at 5 and 10 years for PCALCL were 85%. Disease-specific survival at 5 years for localized versus generalized PCALCL was 91% versus 50% (P = .31). PCALCL was highly responsive to treatment, but the relapse rate was 42%. In all, 3 patients progressed to extracutaneous stage of disease. No clinical or histologic factors analyzed were predictive of worse outcome in lymphomatoid papulosis and PCALCL.Similar to prior reports from multicenter European groups, the single-center experience at our institution demonstrates CD30+ CLPDs have an overall excellent prognosis; however, cases of PCALCL with poor outcome do exist.

Due to the increasing volume of waste all over the world in the current decade, the outcome and effect of discharging produced water on the environment has lately become a significant issue of environmental concern. Produced water is conventionally treated through different physical, chemical, and biological methods. In offshore platforms because of space constraints, compact physical and chemical systems are used. However, current technologies cannot remove small-suspended oil particles and dissolved elements. Besides, many chemical treatments, whose initial and/or running cost are high and produce hazardous sludge. In onshore facilities, biological pretreatment of oily wastewater can be a cost-effective and environmental friendly method. Both glucocorticosteroids and phosphodiesterase (PDE) type 4 inhibitors have modulatory effects on PBMC cytokine secretion. In this study we compared the effect of glucocorticoids and PDE inhibitors on IL-10 and TNF-alpha production by PBMCs from nonatopic versus atopic individuals. PBMCs were incubated with glucocorticoids (beclomethasone dipropionate and mometasone furoate) or media alone for 24 hours. PDE type 4 inhibitors (Ro20-1724 and rolipram) were then added to the cells preincubated with media. After stimulation with PHA, incubation was continued for 48 hours. The cytokine content of the cell supernatants was determined by ELISA. PDE-4 inhibitors and glucocorticoids caused a concentration-dependent inhibition of the secretion of both TNF-alpha and IL-10. PDE-4 inhibitors were over 20 times more potent in suppressing cytokine secretion by PBMCs from atopic than nonatopic donors, and approximately 5 times more potent in preventing TNF-alpha than IL-10 secretion. The accurate diagnosis of malaria starts with clinical suspicion, confirmed by reliable laboratory results. A hospital-based study, described here, was carried out in a malaria mesoendemic area in eastern Sudan, where the inhabitants are semi-immune to malaria, and the fever threshold of parasitemia is not above the detection level of microscopy. Thus, we hypothesized that patients with symptoms highly suggestive of cerebral malaria (CM), but aparasitemic by microscopy, may have submicroscopic parasitemia. Patients in our malaria clinic were screened by microscopy, and 120 individuals were selected for the study, including febrile patients with and without microscopically detectable parasitemia, and apparently healthy individuals. In the two former groups there were patients with severe anemia and deep coma. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for parasite detection and ELISA tests for measuring serum antibody levels were carried out on all blood samples. A majority of the febrile patients who were parasite negative by microscopy showed the presence of a Plasmodium falciparum infection by PCR. The occurrence of P. falciparum infection with parasitemia below the detection level of microscopy was recognized more often in patients with CM symptoms than in those with severe malarial anemia (SMA), and in older rather than younger patients. Patients clinically suspected (CS) of having CM (CSCM) mostly were infected with a single clone, and a large proportion of them acquired antibodies (Abs) against merozoite surface protein (MSP) antigens (Ags). The therapeutic response to quinine treatment was comparable between patients with CSCM and CM. In conclusion, uniquely in this setting, CM can be associated with sub-patent parasitemia; thus, a diagnostic tool more sensitive than microscopy is needed.

The neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the steroid hormone estrogen exhibit potent effects on hippocampal neurons during development and in adulthood. BDNF and estrogen have also been implicated in the etiology of diverse types of neurological disorders or psychiatric illnesses, or have been discussed as potentially important in treatment. Although both are typically studied independently, it has been suggested that BDNF mediates several of the effects of estrogen in the hippocampus, and that these interactions play a role in the normal brain as well as disease. Here we focus on the mossy fiber (MF) pathway of the hippocampus, a critical pathway in normal hippocampal function, and a prime example of a location where numerous studies support an interaction between BDNF and estrogen in the rodent brain. As rich spatiotemporal dynamics are exhibited in the human brain, it is quite complicated in nature. Sudden electrical disturbance of the brain occurs in a temporary manner and it causes epileptic seizures. Seizures may be sometimes confused with other events and sometimes it may even go unnoticed. Prediction of occurrence of an epileptic seizure is quite difficult and it is very difficult to understand the course of action. To analyze this widespread disorder of the brain, Electroencephalography (EEG) is used. It is indeed one of the best techniques to probe the activity of the brain and it is highly useful to diagnose the neurological disease. Tons of information is obtained by the EEG monitoring system and analyzing it visually is quite difficult. Therefore, the dimensionality of the EEG data is reduced with the help of dimensionality reduction techniques like Mutual Information (MI) and Matrix Factorization (MF). The values reduced through dimensionality reduction are then classified with the help of Linear Layer Networks for the classification of epilepsy from EEG Signals. Results show that when MI is used to reduce the dimensionality and classified with Linear Layer Networks an average classification accuracy of 96.60% is obtained.
