Understudied in former research and scarcely documented in historical sources, the populace participating during the ceremony of the coronation in order to enhance legitimation is the subject of this contribution. First, the town itself is shown both in terms of its peculiar roles and changing position within the urban system. Then its highly intricate social structure is analysed within its various social hierarchies including estates (Stände), occupations, religious denominations and ethnicity, with a closer glance at the newly admitted freemen registered in the year of the 1830 coronation. The wide scale of temporary inhabitants from businessmen to peasants flocking into Pozsony with an interest in the celebration as well as the distributed coronation coins is also surveyed. Finally, the functional use of urban space is examined with a focus on the marching route, the best viewpoints from where the celebration could be seen (aristocrats’ palaces and tenement houses) and the inns (hotels) where the masses of visitors could find accommodation for the period of the feast. It is argued that the coronation attracted a large amount of people who played various roles from respectable visitors watching the mass from the balconies or windows of elegants palaces to entrepreneurs making profit from the festivity and lower class participants taking part in the various mundane joys and pleasures taking place in the streets (roasting oxen, convivial consumption of wine and picking up the silver coins dispersed).

A Magyar Királyság és Horvátország közös államiságának több mint közös 800 éves története ellenére még ma is rengeteg megválaszolatlan kérdése van a két ország kapcsolatának. A dalmáciai városok középkori Magyar Királyságban elfoglalt szerepe és az uralkodóval való viszonya is ezen fehér foltok közé tartozik. E könyv a magyar–horvát államközösség kezdeteire koncentrálva az Árpád-kor uralkodóinak hatalomgyakorlásán keresztül mutatja be Dalmácia helyét a magyar államban. A kötet a városok és a királyi udvar kapcsolatainak számos aspektusán keresztül kalauzolja az olvasót, megvizsgálva az egyházszervezeti változások jelentőségét, a magyar főpapok és az egyházi adományok szerepét a magyar uralom fenntartásában, a magyar hatalom dalmáciai képviselőit és az uralkodói reprezentáció elemeit is. Gál Judit a Bölcsészettudományi Kutatóközpont Történettudományi Intézetének a munkatársa, fő kutatási területe Magyarország és a Balkán 11-15. századi kapcsolatainak története.

Tanulmányomban a Belső-Erzsébetváros, azon belül a Klauzál tér és környéke példáján mutatom be azt hogy, hogyan változott a várospolitika a Kádár-korszakban: részben gyakorlati okokból hogyan került egyre inkább előtérbe a történelmi városrészek védelme, és milyen kísérletek, megoldások jellemezték a városrehabilitáció 1980-as évekbeli gyakorlatát. Megkísérlem azt, hogy ezt a gyakorlatot minél több szemszögből láttassam, és ütköztessem a városfelújításban érintettek eltérő nézőpontjait. Célom a makro- és a mikroszint, a felülnézet és az alulnézet szembeállítása: a felülnézetet a fővárosi és a kerületi párt-és tanácsi szervek, illetve a háztömbfelújítást lebonyolító Ingatlankezelő Vállalat vezetése képviseli, az alulnézetet pedig a helyi lakosok. Mindennek kapcsán jól kirajzolódik, hogyan működtek valójában a helyi hatalmi viszonyok, és milyen konfliktusok adódhattak a kerületi és a fővárosi vezetés között. Forrásaim között szerepelnek kerületi tanácsi és pártdokumentumok, pl. pártbizottsági ülések jegyzőkönyvei és mellékletei, egykori városszociológiai felmérések, valamint szakértői és lakossági interjúk.

Győr, a prosperous middling town in Western Hungary, became the scene of an act of physical aggression in 1831 when a barrister of noble status was hit and wounded by the bailiffs of the town council. The ownership of a valuable town house became questioned after the death of the owner who had no descendants. A last will of its previous noble owner and a barrister came from the countryside to seize it on behalf of the collateral relatives while the town magistrate also claimed the property for the urban community. During the lawsuit, one main charge against the town leaders was that they inflamed their bailiffs “against the nobility”. The article examines how far the brutal incident can be interpreted as a social conflict in the highly heterogeneous urban society of Győr.

Title: Advocates in Cluj in the Late 16th Century
Abstract: Based on records preserved in the town archives, the first part of the study focuses on the general presentation of the institution of the advocates in Cluj at the end of the 16th century. In the second part the author details the carriers of György Igyártó, János Kalmár, Imre Horvát, Lukács Trauzner and Sámuel Bélteki, reflecting on the career possibilities of the early modern advocates. The analysis points out that in Cluj at the end of the 16th century the able advocates were among the most respected officeholders of the town. In cases which prejudiced the community of the town, the wealth and goods, or the liberties of the town as a whole the magistrates hired only advocates, who had gained their judicial knowledge in the chancellery of the principality or at foreign universities, who had experience at all levels of the judicial institutions of the country, and had a good reputation countrywide. On the other hand, in the cases concerning the internal peace and order of the town, the material stability and personal safety of its citizens, the town leaders worked exclusively with advocates from Cluj, who were familiar
with the laws and the consuetude of the town, and whose activity was highly appreciated among the citizens. Th e analysis revealed as well that in the case of the latter their activity as advocates facilitated their vertical mobility. At the same time, as György Igyártó’s case exemplifi es, although the office of an advocate could off er the perspectives of a great carrier, it could also lead to breakdown.

A tanulmány arra tesz kísérletet, hogy az 1848 előtti magyarországi egyesületekben a német evangélikus polgárság szerepvállalását felmérje. A szabadkőműves páholyoktól a jótékony nőegyleteken át a pesti casinókig és a természettudományos-orvosi szerveződésekig, illetve a szász városoktól Pozsonyig és Eperjestől Pestig számos egyesületben vizsgálja meg az evangélikusok részvételének súlyát (a vezetőségben, a tagdíjfizető tagságban és a tényleges aktivitást kifejtők körében). Habár egylettípusonként és az egyes városok hagyományait tükrözve a részvételi arányok és mintázatok jelentős eltéréseket mutatnak, összességében mégis a német evangélikusok kiemelkedő aktivitását tapasztaljuk. Ennek okaként a szerző az érdekelt személyek közös kultúráját (külföldi tájékozódását, iskoláztatási szokásait), valamint a köztük előzetesen is meglévő, országos léptékű kapcsolati hálót határozza meg. Ebben az értelemben a tanulmány módszertani kísérletként is értelmezhető, amennyiben az egyesületet társadalomszerveződési alakzatnak felfogva az elemzés során a szokásos, rendi-foglalkozási összetétel vizsgálata helyett a magyarországi késő rendi társadalom egyik karakteres rendies csoportját – mint kulturális fogalmakkal leírható, erős társadalmi ambíciókkal jellemezhető és összetartó országos hálózatot építő tömböt – teszi az egyesülettörténeti vizsgálat tárgyává.

A tanulmány arra tesz kísérletet, hogy bemutassa Budapest közlekedésfejlesztési törekvéseit a metróépítés "csendes" újraindulásától a kelet-nyugati vonal átadásáig. A dolgozat a Fővárosi Tanács VB-üléseinek jegyzőkönyveit használja legfontosabb forrásként, de a Közlekedési-és Postaügyi Minisztérium (KPM), valamint az MSZMP legfontosabb döntéshozatali szerveinek iratai sem hiányoznak belőle.

Title: Caring Husband or Wife Killer? Poisoning, French Disease, and Details of a Procurator’s Career in Early Modern Cluj.
Abstract: The study focuses on certain unclarified aspects of the life of George Igyártó, a procurator in the early modern town of Cluj. Based on his career, we have shown earlier how the prosperous activity and – due to acts of judicial corruption – the downfall of a person, at first in the service of the citizens, then also as official procurator of the town, marked the whole judicial system of Cluj. This time we shall concentrate on a case of a woman, around 1581, whom he accused of wearing carnival costumes on the streets of the town, accused him with adultery and uxoricide. Some witnesses stated that he poisoned his first wife with food containing mercury, being helped by a traditional healer and a surgeon. According to others, the wife was suffering most probably of the French disease, which together with her ignoring the strict medical prescriptions of a surgeon caused her death. As other studies have also shown, the contradictory standpoints of the litigants demonstrate that in times when limited medical knowledge made the diagnosis of the cause of death more problematic than today, the litigants had more chance to influence the decisions of the judges on behalf of their causes. The case also shows how thin and fragile the borderline was between contrasting opinions under the circumstances of the early modern medical system, in our case between an action being interpreted as a murder or as a life-saving effort.

„What (the fuck) is going on in Hungary?” Vajon miért nincs ellenállás a magyar társadalomban a jelenlegi politikai elittel szemben? Vajon vannak-e mélyebb, történelmi okai ennek a tehetetlenségnek? – bombáznak kérdéseikkel külföldi kollégáim, ha egy-egy konferenciavacsorán egymás mellé sodródunk. Ilyenkor legszívesebben elmenekülnék az asztaltól, hiszen minden porcikámmal beágyazott vagyok abba a társadalomba és kultúrába, amellyel kapcsolatban azt várják tőlem, hogy – úgymond – „kiteregessem a szennyesét”. Ám be kell látnom, hogy az ő nézőpontjukból teljes joggal jelenek meg nemzeti közösségem képviselőjeként, úgyhogy kénytelen vagyok olyan válaszokkal szolgálni, amelyek relevánsak lehetnek egy brit, portugál, román vagy ausztrál (stb.) társadalomtudós számára. S miután ezt a kérdést már sokszor föltették nekem, egyszer csak azon kaptam magam, hogy kiselőadásaim kezdenek koherens jelleget ölteni. Úgyhogy arra gondoltam: talán szerencsés volna hozzáférhetővé tenni töredékes gondolataimat – egyfajta problémafölvető munkaanyagként.

The identification of the city hierarchy of our home country raises numerous questions, which arises from the complexity of the settlement structure, as well as from the special urban development of the Carpathian Basin. The starting point has been the fact that there was a strong positive correlation between the position in urban hierarchy and the quantity (complexity) of the urban roles (Beluszky–Győri 2005.). The further aim of the study is to depict the network of cities of the interwar Hungary. First, I will study the emerging methodological issues, and I will also try to find solutions for them. The recent study published by Pál Beluszky and Róbert Győri (2005), which examines the 1910 conditions, provides a base to observe the changes in the mentioned structure until 1930.  An important element of the present hierarchy study is to separate the downtown data from data of the periphery, as the classical homestead principle had already ceased to exist (Mendöl 1993., Timár 2006.).  Another important methodological aspect of the study is the way my computer database is modelling and distorting the whole structure, as well as its levels. Using this method, the study of the interwar urban hierarchy can be put onto new methodological bases, which differ significantly from the earlier domestic research methods.

The study focuses on the advocatorial activity of György Igyártó, a notorious witch-hunter of Kolozsvár/Cluj, from the end of the 16th century. Although previous research has already marked certain aspects of his life, a detailed analysis of his career – based on the data preserved in the town archives – points out some interesting features concerning the possibilities, challenges and difficulties of an early modern advocates life. It also shows how the career of a single person could affect the whole judicial activity of a town. Born as a member of a burgher family, with no specific legal studies, he started his career as advocate of the citizens. As a consequence of his success he was elected official advocate of the town. As procurator of Cluj, he had a determinant role in introducing the practice of the inquisitorial process in the judicial activity of the town. In the meantime he developed a vast social network, and came in contact with the most prominent members of the town magistrate, and of the state, too. In spite of all these he got involved into certain acts of judicial corruption, that marked his career, affecting at the same time the whole judicial system of the town. His case convinced the magistrate to introduce the office of the town’s coroner (director causarum), that gained exclusive competence in intervening on behalf of the town in criminal cases, that jeopardized the citizen’s lives, but were not allowed to plead for citizens in their private legal disputes.

Tanulmányom három eltérő forrásból igyekszik megközelíteni a hosszú XIX. századi Felső-Magyarország egyik legdinamikusabban fejlődő városának – Besztercebányának – háborús megpróbáltatásait. Az alfejezeteket tematika szerint csoportosítottam, felhasznált forrásaim pedig a fennmaradt, kissé szűkmarkúbb adminisztráció és a vármegye, illetve minisztériumok leirataiból álló primer forrásokból, valamint a sokkal színesebb helyi sajtóból áll. Besztercebánya városa,
élen járt a magyarosodási folyamatban, azon városok csoportjába tartozott, melyek a legrohamo-
sabb ütemben magyarosodtak.
Besztercebánya városának háborús évei – csakúgy, mint más nagyvárosok esetében – főképp az ellátási problémák és a jövőben való bizonytalanság jegyében teltek el. Az árak folytonos növelése
elkeserítette a lakosságot és a kispénzű polgárság főleg mellékállások betöltésével foglalatoskodott. A családfenntartó behívása egyenesen az éhezés szélére jutatott egyes családokat. A NagyHáború első fél esztendejében a sajtó a harcokkal foglalkozott, majd főként a háborús kitartással, melyet a kezdeti élelmezési sokk okozott, különösen 1915 tavaszán, mikor is sorra vezették be a jegyrendszert és az árak egyre csak emelkedtek. Az 1916-os évre a háború intézményesült, a lakosság hozzászokott az állapotokhoz, sőt egyre inkább megszokott életét folytatta. 1917 második felére azonban az ellátási problémák egyre súlyosbodtak, az 1918-as évben pedig már gyakorlatilag éhezés sújtotta a lakosság nagy hányadát. Ami a város politikai életét illeti, az események hűen követték a budapesti történéseket, és általánosságban is elmondható, hogy a városi értelmiség a pesti események iránt rendkívül érdeklődő volt, a felvidéki szlovák törekvések pedig csak ritkán
jelentek meg a cikkekben.

Title: The Inquisitors (directores causarum) in the Judicial Practice of Cluj at the End of the 16th Century

Abstract: The two inquisitors of the town (inquisitores malefactorum) are mentioned for the first time in the judicial protocols of the town in 1584, but the first regulation of their activities dates from March 1587. The establishment of the institution was marked by a series of circumstances: the growing efforts of the town officials to tighten the control over the community of the town, the introduction of the inquisitorial procedure, and the judicial activity of a town advocate called György Igyártó. After their competences and duties being delineated in 1587, they were charged to take action against criminals in cases that didn’t involve private accusation, and gained an important role in the management of the town’s revenues as well. The two inquisitors were annually elected among the centumviri. There activity focused on the crimes that endangered the security and the public order of the town’s society – mainly the security of the human life, of the family and the public morality – and to a lesser extent on trials concerning the material belongings of the citizens. The data presented shows that the apparition of the institution stimulated greatly the development of the judicial practice of the town. They were charged to take up the efforts of the town’s magistrate to provide an institutional frame for the persecution and the punishment of the criminals. The growth in number of both the type of the crimes prosecuted and the number of criminal trials started through private or public initiation at the court of the town proves a more effective impeachment of the criminals; furthermore, it clearly indicates the growing role of the justice in the disciplining process of the society. These changes can be listed among other political, social and religious changes of the second half of the 16th century, that are closely linked to the town’s endeavor to gain its independence in every aspect of the town-life.

Title: The Public Prosecutors of Cluj as Guardians of the Town’s Wealth (1584-1660)
Abstract: In our former research we have detailed the history of the institution of the public prosecutors (directores causarum) from Cluj in the late 16th century focusing on their impact on the judicial activity of the town. But little was said about their role in the management of the town’s revenues. A charter of prince Stephen Báthory from 1575 granted the town the privilege that the possessions of citizens deceased without a heir would fall in the town’s hands. Besides the persecution of criminals, the prosecutors had to deal with these possessions as well. Their effort was constantly supervised by the council of the hundred men. The domini divisores (who had the deepest knowledge of the norms of the inheritance in the town and who were in charge of the partages among citizens) were their closest partners. In case they found parts of inheritances that needed to be given to the town, they informed the prosecutors, who acquired the possessions either through legal disputes or through friendly arrangements. Likewise, the prosecutors intervened in situations when the heirs tried to conceal parts of their inheritance. When the interest of the town required it, they got involved as third parties in judicial trials between citizens as well. They also seized properties of criminals who had fled the city before their case went to court, or if the heirs had not shown up in time. They did not succeed in all their efforts. Some cases were rejected either because they didn’t fall under the power of the 1575 privilege, or the last will of the deceased specified it differently, or the missing heirs finally turned up, or simply because they realised that the debt left by the deceased was higher than the income that they expected to get from the acquired possessions. It was also the prosecutors’ duty to acquire the goods left for the town by testaments.
All the acquired possessions were partly real estates and partly goods: clothes, flatware, jewellery and wines. Their accounts show that they had around a dozen of cases annually. Their income (from 50 to 2000+ Forints), compared to other office-holders’ (church wardens, thirtieth customs-officers, tax-collectors) income, in about half of the cases it was a quite modest one, but even in the worse years it still covered twice the expenditures of their criminal trials. Although our data is scarce, the prosecutors were better qualified than common citizens in the questions regarding the norms of the inheritance or the management of the town’s revenues.
The data presented show that the activity of the prosecutors had a sharp influence on the evolution of the legal and social life of Cluj. By establishing the institution the magistrate tried on one hand to give more impetus to the role of the justice in the disciplining process of the society, and on the other hand to assure the material prosperity of the town.

A szocialista időszak hatalomgyakorlási technikája alapvetően átalakította a korábbi döntéshozatali viszonyokat és a döntések társadalmi befolyásának módozatait Budapesten. A szocialista időszakban a döntéshozatalban az állami (kormány­zati, tanácsi, önkormányzati) hierarchia mellett a párthierarchia is szerephez jutott, amely az állami hierarchiával párhuzamosan kiépítette a maga szintjeit, funkciói kialakításában pedig lefedte a nem-párt hierarchia pozíció-, szerve­zeti és tevékenységi struktúráját. A két struktúra a párt hatalmi eszközei révén szervesen összekapcsolódott, s a párthierarchia megfelelő szintje ellenőrizte a felügyelete alá tartozó állami szintet.
