Abstract (Spanish): Este trabajo estudia la notable aportación pardobazaniana al estreno del género policiaco en España, la novela corta “La gota de sangre” (1911), obra que nace de la decepción frente a la fórmula clásica inglesa y explora los aspectos más turbios y reveladores del crimen. “La gota de sangre” contiene una benévola ironía sobre Sherlock Holmes y una rigurosa propuesta de innovación hacia los territorios de la infracción, la puesta en entredicho, la permeabilidad a las razones del desorden. El detective aficionado Selva procede de forma heterodoxa y ambigua, instintiva e intuitiva. Y lejos de tener una conducta intachable, se sale de la legalidad, porque su espíritu ha fermentado arrastrado por la transgresión de la creatividad, seducido por la emoción de vivir y contar. La autora nos ofrece una vívida imagen de su poética. Este detective que asume la ficción como horizonte noético es el escritor y es el lector. El eje de la novela es el cambio producido en Selva por los acontecimientos, la evolución que conlleva su pasión por explorar almas como remedio contra el tedio, proceso que le hace tomar conciencia de sí mismo y descubrir dos vocaciones: la policiaca y la literaria.

Traditionally hailed as a masterpiece of the New Spanish Cinema of the 1960s, Miguel Picazo’s La tía Tula (1964) has been customarily read as a politically oppositional take on the Francoist gender ideology that favored female sexual repression. If Unamuno’s novel from 1921 focused on a protagonist who resolutely denied biological maternity in order to paradoxically found a kind of spiritual matriarchy, Picazo’s film radically undermined Tula’s complex cult of “virginal motherhood”, which was subservient to an overpowering yearning for immortality and spiritual perpetuation that underlay Unamuno’s entire narrative and thought. The movie’s confessed attempt to construct an emblematic figure of provincial Catholic womanhood that was both repressed and repressive is set within an allegedly representative small town of postwar Spain, which significantly departs from Unamuno’s rather abstract socio-historical setting while it recycles the overused nineteenth-century (regenerationist) critique of the Spanish province.
By interrogating the historical-ideological rationale behind this reductionist adaptation of Unamuno’s novel and by critically repositioning the beleaguered image of the female protagonist, this essay seeks to overcome the all-explanatory cliché of sexual repression in the attempt to propose a feminist reading of Picazo’s main character. Furthermore, this suggested hermeneutic shift could enable an understanding of why contemporary American college students seem to consistently see the 1964 Tula as an admirably empowering female figure within the rigid constraints that Franco’s regime imposed to women. Focusing on a close analysis of two decisive cinematic scenes of the movie, this essay tries to explain why and how such a contemporary feminist reading of the film could felicitously go beyond the limitative traditional interpretation that capitalized on the movie director’s avowed politicized intentions of adapting Unamuno’s La tía Tula in the Spain of the 1960s.

Javier Marías’s novels are renowned for revolving around his digressive narrators, who, amongst other subjects, persistently reflect upon language and translation. This article discusses the role of these constant reflections and examines the narrators’ engagement with different forms of translation by using Roman Jakobson’s categorisation (intralingual, interlingual and intersemiotic translation) in four novels that correspond to Marías’s mature novelistic period (Todas las almas (1989), Corazón tan blanco (1992), Mañana en la batalla piensa en mí (1994) and Tu rostro mañana (2002–2007)). It briefly discusses the effects of intralingual and intersemiotic translation on the narrators before moving on to analysing in detail the impact of interlingual translations. The latter is a prominent aspect in Marías’s fiction; its significance is examined through the use of foreign terms and their translations (or lack thereof ), as well as the narrators’ reflections upon them. The ultimate aim of this article is to establish the link between the all-pervasive uncertainty in Marías’s novels and the narrators’ fascination with translation, especially of the interlingual kind.

Federico García Lorca's work has one foot in tradition and the other in modernity, bridging the rural and the urban but also deriving a peculiar force from contradictions between the two. This in-between status may very well be what brought Lorca and, through him, Spanish literature out of the periphery of Europe and on to a world stage. In his first mature work, Lorca interprets ancient traditions (flamenco and folksong), but he does so with a difference, using avant-garde technique or linking desire to a foregone frustration. The balladeer figure in the Gypsy Songbook mediates between an ancient community of gypsies and their "civilized" opponents. In Poet in New York, the poet seeks to mediate the loss of religious faith and the crisis of values triggered by the Great Depression. Lorca's theater starts with modernity's refusal of prescriptions for desire and a commitment to a politics of individual freedom.

Esta es la historia de Chenta Tsai Tseng, o como se lo conoce más en el mundo artístico: Putochinomaricón. Este libro es también la receta de un «arroz tres delicias» ideológico, una especialidad china nacida en Occidente. No es un libro de cocina sino más bien de cómo se elaboran algunos estereotipos.

Esta tesis examina las representaciones de la Guerra Civil española y la dictadura franquista en diez novelas españolas. Los autores, nacidos entre los años 1960 y 1975, pertenecen a la tercera generación, también conocida como la generación de “los nietos de la guerra”. Las obras analizadas fueron publicadas entre los años 1997 y 2008 durante el llamado “boom de la memoria”. Se argumenta en el presente trabajo que estas novelas funcionan en la cultura de la memoria española como medios de memoria cultural, dado que contribuyen a producir, moldear y difundir diferentes imágenes, versiones e interpretaciones del pasado violento del país.

Según Astrid Erll, ciertas combinaciones de formas narrativas constituyen diferentes modos de representación en la literatura. Estos modos de representación pueden, a su vez, dar lugar a diferentes tipos de memoria cultural. En esta tesis se propone que en la novela española de la tercera generación sobre la Guerra Civil y el franquismo existen tres modos principales de representar el pasado. Estos modos son el modo vivencial, el modo reconstructivo y el modo constestatario.     

El modo vivencial representa el pasado como una experiencia vivida. En lugar de examinar el proceso de recordar y contar el pasado en el presente, las novelas vivenciales pretenden transportar al lector al pasado para que este pueda “compartir” la vivencia subjetiva de los protagonistas. De esta manera, las obras convierten al lector en un testigo vicario de los hechos narrados. La función principal del modo vivencial es promover empatía y comprensión hacia ciertos individuos o grupos del pasado.

El modo reconstructivo narra el proceso de investigación y la reconstrucción de una serie de acontecimientos del pasado por parte de un narrador-protagonista situado en el presente. Las novelas examinan la transmisión intergeneracional de memorias y acentúan el papel que el pasado desempeña en la construcción de identidades tanto personales como colectivas. Aunque las obras representan el pasado como una reconstrucción subjetiva y emplean técnicas autoficticias y/o metaficticias, que problematizan los límites entre arte y realidad, al final suelen presentar una determinada versión del pasado como la verdadera. A través de la pesquisa histórica e identitaria del narrador-protagonista, las novelas reconstructivas procuran convencer al lector del valor del conocimiento del pasado para la comprensión del presente.

Al contrario que los modos anteriores, el modo contestatario no pretende ofrecer al lector una historia verdadera del pasado, sino que examina el papel de la literatura en la producción de conocimientos sobre el pasado. Las novelas contestatarias son altamente autorreflexivas. Las obras rechazan la verosimilitud y rompen la ilusión de realidad con el propósito de problematizar prácticas de representación habituales, así como interpretaciones dominantes del pasado. El modo contestatario pone de manifiesto cómo la literatura influye en nuestra comprensión del pasado a través de las formas narrativas y las historias que narra, incitando así a los lectores a adoptar una postura más crítica hacia las representaciones del pasado que circulan en la sociedad.

A partir de la teoría del afecto, este artículo argumenta que Zorrilla crea en su Don Juan Tenorio un «discurso líquido» que cohesiona el significado de la obra y que a su vez sirve para iluminar el poderoso efecto de sus momentos más canónicos. Los fluidos corporales en Don Juan Tenorio son reflejos de la fluidez lingüística en la obra, pero también son trazas líquidas en el texto de la sensualidad sublimada en el discurso que se transforman en manos de Zorrilla en un puente sensorial de comunicación con lo divino. Además, el artículo defiende con ejemplos de recepción literaria que en el texto se produce una «transubstanciación emocional» que facilita la transmisión de las emociones entre lectores de distintas épocas. Al margen de la atención mayoritaria y sin excesiva notoriedad, transcurre la prosa breve y de carácter fantástico de Antonio Muñoz Molina. En una suerte semejante a la de otros grandes autores españoles, han sido sus novelas, especialmente aquellas ligadas a la estética realista, las que han recibido una atención prioritaria. Su producción fantástica, aunque no abundante en cantidad, sin embargo, no desmerece en términos de calidad. El entorno de misterio, que bajo el formato de la novela tiende a desembocar hacia el género de espionaje o policíaco, se demora en la explicación sobrenatural en los márgenes de su prosa breve. En este artículo, me centraré en uno de sus relatos más sugestivos al análisis de lo fantástico, «Si tú me dices ven», incluido en la colección Nada del otro mundo (2011: pp. 195-207). A lo largo de estas páginas abordaré el análisis de los tres elementos que dentro del texto, a mi juicio, remozan la tradición literaria del ghost story en una clave de originalidad. En concreto, atenderé el sentido y el mapa de interrelaciones contrastivas conformado por los siguientes elementos: el río, el teléfono y el bolero, cuya enumeración tal vez pueda parecer azarosa, pero que, como demostraré sirven de cimiento a la expresión fantástica del cuento.

Among many composers of the 20th and 21st century who were inspired by Lorca's poetry, George Crumb stands out with his extensive work dedicated to the Spanish poet. In his musical language, full of symbolism and musical poetics, he not only sets the words into music, but also reaches the intertextual levels of the poetic meaning.

In the disseration „Symbolic and the aesthetic aspects of the musical language in „The Ghosts of Alhambra” by George Crumb”, I first discuss the historical context of the musical settings of Poema del cante jondo as well as Lorca's influence on the music of the 20th and 21st century with a special focus on the works for guitar solo and chamber music with guitar.
In the chapter of the analysis, I discuss the symbolism of poetry and its influence on the compositional technique of George Crumb. I pay close attention to the figurative connections between the music and the word. In the last chapter of this writing, I describe the aesthetic aspects of the musical language such as the timbre, the use of extended techniques, influences from the traditional cante jondo, as well as the dramaturgical structure of the form.

While the early works by George Crumb have been analyzed several times in all of these aspects, disproportionate little has been written about his latest compositions. To the best of my knowledge, the work The Ghosts of Alhambra (Spanish Songbook I) from 2008 has not yet been described thoroughly in any academic paper. Therefore, the following analysis is one
of the first sources to contribute to a deeper understanding of one of the latest compositions by George Crumb.

‘Queer Rebels’ is a study of gay narrative writings published in Spain at the turn of the 20th century. The book scrutinises the ways in which the literary production of contemporary Spanish gay authors – José Luis de Juan, Luis G. Martín, Juan Gil-Albert, Juan Goytisolo, Eduardo Mendicutti, Luis Antonio de Villena and Álvaro Pombo – engages with homophobic and homophile discourses, as well as with the vernacular and international literary legacy.

The first part revolves around the metaphor of a rebellious scribe who queers literary tradition by clandestinely weaving changes into copies of the books he makes. This subversive writing act, named ‘Mazuf’s gesture’ after the protagonist of José Luis de Juan’s ‘This Breathing World’ (1999), is examined in four highly intertextual works by other writers.

The second part of the book explores Luis Antonio de Villena and Álvaro Pombo, who in their different ways seek to coin their own definitions of homosexual experience in opposition both to the homophobic discourses of the past and to the homonormative regimes of the commercialised and trivialised gay culture of today. In their novels, ‘Mazuf’s gesture’ involves playing a sophisticated queer game with readers and their expectations.

in terms of breadth unprecedented analysis of Spanish writers taking sides when faced with the 1936-1939 civil war. While previous works usually discuss some 15-40 names, this study provides segmentation of 250 authors into pro-Nationalist, pro-Republican and neither-nor groups.

In this article, from reference of the modern long poems like "The Prelude" (W. Wordsworth, 1799-1850), "Song of Myself" (W. Whitman, 1855), "Un coup de dées" (S. Mallarmé, 1897), "The Waste Land" (T. S. Elliot, 1922) o "El libro, tras la duna" (A. Sánchez Robayna, 2002), the generalities of the new poetic genre of the long poem are defined: length, hybrid character, autobiographism, the resource on rote learning, the lyrical subject’s ontological disorientation, narrative character, mental travel, search of a space of alignment, irregular and disrupted syntax, rhythmic repetitions… Even though in the Anglo-Saxon field there are some studies about the topic that are canonical, in the Hispanic field there is few ones, except for a couple of articles by O. Paz and a study by A. Sánchez Robayna about the long poem and “Espacio” by J. R. Jiménez, The thesis posed by our study is to demonstrate, from the specific examples described, that such compositions are not set only by the length or the number of verses, but the structure and the idea of composition, that is the subject of the text, along with time, and what distinguishes this type of long-winded speeches poetry from an organic set of poems with some kind of unity.

En este artículo se determinan –a partir del referente de poemas extensos modernos como "El Preludio" (W. Wordsworth, 1799-1850), "Canto a mí mismo" (W. Whitman, 1855), "Un tiro de dados" (S. Mallarmé, 1897), "La tierra baldía" (T.S. Elliot,
1922) o "El libro, tras la duna" (A. Sánchez Robayna, 2002)– las características del “nuevo” género poético del poema extenso: extensión, diégesis, carácter híbrido, autobiografismo, recurso memorístico, desorientación ontológica del sujeto lírico, viaje mental, búsqueda de un espacio de alienación, sintaxis irregular y fragmentada, repeticiones rítmicas… Aunque en el ámbito anglosajón hay algunos estudios canónicos sobre el tema, en el hispánico existen pocos, a excepción de un par de artículos de O. Paz y otro elaborado por A. Sánchez Robayna sobre el poema extenso y “Espacio” de J. R. Jiménez. Nuestro estudio pretende demostrar –a partir ejemplos concretos– que este tipo de composiciones no están configuradas únicamente por la extensión ni el número de versos, sino por la estructura y la idea
de composición, que es la materia del texto –junto al tiempo– y lo que, en definitiva, permite distinguir este tipo de discursos poéticos de largo aliento de un conjunto orgánico de poemas con una cierta unidad.

Gregorio Olías se construye a sí mismo en un proceso en el que el héroe de las películas de aventuras se mezcla con el tipo hard boiled, el poeta bohemio y el ingeniero. Nuestro protagonista emplea este modelo de héroe misterioso, profundo y seductor, que depende sólo de sí mismo y le impone al mundo sus reglas, para moldear su alter ego, Faroni, y escapar así de la vida de sórdida vulgaridad que ha engullido sus sueños. Estas películas, que no excluyen la presencia de otros géneros, como la comedia romántica, el histórico y la ciencia ficción, suponen la principal fuente de influencia de la cultura de masas sobre la obra de Landero. Como corresponde a su estilo, el género de aventuras aparece recreado a partir de la parodia carnavalesca, el simbolismo y la paradoja, de modo que el mundo en el que se desenvuelve el héroe viene determinado por la acumulación de tópicos y la hipérbole.
Gregorio Olias builds himself in a process in which the adventure film hero gets mixed with the hard boiled guy, the bohemian poet and the engineer. He uses this model of the mysterious, deep and seductive hero, who relies only on himself and imposes his rules, to mold his alter ego, Faroni, and to escape from a sordid life which has annihilated his dreams. These films, which include romantic, historical and science fiction genres, constitute the principal source of mass culture influence on Landero´s narrative. As befits his style, the adventure genre and its hero appear recreated through parody, symbolism, paradox, hyperbole and accumulation of clichés.

This Ghostly Poetry es un libro que marca un hito en el campo de estudio de la poesía del exilio literario español de 1939. Audaz, valiente y con una meticulosa argumentación, Daniel Aguirre-Oteiza se adentra en la lectura crítica de determinadas obras y autores de la España republicana que acabaron su producción en el exilio. No resulta tarea sencilla en tanto que para ello se exige entender y superar lo que presenta como carencias de cierta historiografía literaria contemporánea que, consciente o no, ha visto en la producción de tales exiliados una continuidad cronológica de la historia cultural en la España peninsular. Tomando como premisa esta perspectiva temporal, el concepto nación adopta la centralidad de esta retórica y el canon que se delimita a partir de ella busca el rescate de una hipotética cultura con límites fronterizos, de una teleología literaria nacional. Aguirre-Oteiza argumenta que aceptar esta continuidad significaría obviar o forzar la comprensión de los trazos lingüísticos y literarios (deixis, tropos) presentes en textos del exilio; trazos y posicionamientos que evidencian que, en todo caso, tal continuidad no podría establecerse sin menoscabo de una complejidad que debilitase esa actitud teleológica. Este estudio, por tanto, cuestiona las llamadas literatura nacional y literatura del exilio y centra su atención en la problemática definición de ambas.

“Photography Is Death Itself: Ruins, Specter, and the Testimony of Antonio Machado in Juan Ramón Jiménez’s Guerra en España.” Between 1936 and 1954, the prolific Spanish poet, editor, critic, and Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez (Spain, 1881-Puerto Rico, 1958) kept an archive of heterogeneous texts and documents produced by him and others. This archive, published under the title Guerra en España, included photographs, journal entries, newspaper clippings, letters, poems, translations, lectures, interviews, and aphorisms. Jiménez intended for this corpus to serve as the transatlantic testimony of his pro-Republican activities during the Spanish Civil War and his long exile in the US and Latin America. I contend that Guerra en España also contains a “visionary,” poetic testimony to life after death. Guided by the memory of Antonio Machado, the towering Spanish poet who died in exile in 1939, Jiménez’s visionary poetics can be seen as a montage of epitaphic ruins that bears witness to a symbolic near-death experience while it also safeguards his own works against unwanted political uses. The interest of Guerra en España as testimony lies in the unresolved tensions between politics and poetry that are foregrounded by the articulation of its heterogeneous materials. These tensions largely explain the importance that scholars have recently and increasingly granted Jiménez in twentieth-century Spanish intellectual history.

This article is a preliminary exploration of a large (some forty texts) and relatively unknown sample of reactionary uchronias—that is, works of fiction that imagine future revolutions in dystopian terms—published in Spain between the 1870s and the 1950s. Building on the work of Marc Angenot and Matthew Beaumont, among others, it argues that these texts not only provide a precious insight into the mentality of a large section of Spanish society in the transition to modernity but also illuminate the formative process of the modern dystopia. Spanish uchronias are interesting for various reasons: their abundance and variety during a very long period, the evidence of cultural transfers both into and—less often—from Spain, and their peculiar features, such as the important role played by religion both in the plot and in the identity of protagonists. More generally, the study shows the remarkable spread of the dystopian form in the Western world since the end of the nineteenth century and the need for further comparative and transnational analyses that integrate the traditions of “semiperipheral countries” into the general—and overwhelmingly Anglo-American—narrative on the history of utopianism.

Entre 1991 y 1992, cuatro novelas españolas asombrosamente similares entre sí ponen en escena la gran crisis del discurso de la Historia y el de las utopías de la izquierda europea frente al triunfo de la era del vacío. El argumento gira alrededor de un grupo de intelectuales que a fines de los años ochenta recuerdan el pasado cercano –el de la lucha contra el franquismo– con una nostalgia propia de una distancia temporal mucho mayor. En todos los casos, hay un hueco, una zona imposible de narrar, el gran salto entre la sociedad española contemporánea que ha puesto distancia con la dictadura. A través del análisis de las soluciones que cada escritor postula para modelar esta historia, es posible entender En la lucha final –un texto seminal que servirá de base para otros textos centrales en la obra de Chirbes– como parte de una reacción temprana contra la cultura exitista de la España posmoderna, europea y amnésica.

Between 1991 and 1992 there were published four amazingly similar Spanish novels that presents the great crisis of the historical narratives and the utopias of the European Left; facing the era of emptiness. The common plot centers on the crisis of a group of intellectuals that at the end of the 80s, filled with nostalgy, remembers the near past –when they fought against Francoism–as they were recalling a distant time. In all the novels there is a gap, an empty area that it is impossible to narrate. It is the great leap forwards modernity that leaves behind the dark times of the dictatorship. The analysis of the four novels –of the four ways of setting the same plot– allows to understand Rafael Chirbes’ En la lucha final as part of an early response to the celebrated postmodern, European and amnesic Spanish culture.

The poets featured in this volume are Antonio Gamoneda, Olvido García Valdés, Miguel Casado, Marcos Canteli, Sandra Santana, Benito del Pliego, Julia Piera, Ana Gorría, Pilar Fraile Amador, and Esther Ramón.

Tu rostro mañana no sólo es la novela de mayor tamaño y ambición de las que ha publicado Marías hasta la fecha, sino también la de mayor vigencia y atrevimiento políticos. Se distingue de sus novelas anteriores por su claro enfoque ético-histórico; en efecto, cabe leerla como una larga y compleja indagación, dentro del marco concreto de la Guerra Civil Española, sobre el papel cultural, psicológico, político y social de la violencia y su memoria. Así, Tu rostro mañana constituye una contribución original e importante a los debates sobre la memoria histórica que han venido dividiendo a la sociedad española durante la última década.

La revuelta de Mayo del 68 en Francia ha sido un tema muy presente en la producción literaria de varios autores españoles contemporáneos. En este trabajo, se estudia el impacto de dicho suceso en la vida, la obra y el pensamiento del escritor Fernando Sánchez Dragó, fundamentalmente a través de su novela El camino del corazón (1990), así como de otros de sus libros, textos y declaraciones públicas. El eje central del artículo es el tránsito del autor, como si de un Ulises moderno se tratase, desde un marxismo heterodoxo hacia un esencialismo místico; unido al papel que juega la literatura en esta conversión ideológica.
