Maria Todorova claims that Edward Said's orientalism differs from balkanism since the Balkans were never colonized in the traditional (political and economic) sense. Yet the colonial politics of representation and colonial psychology have been fully operational there. This article interprets the work of two world-renowned psychoanalysts from the Balkans, Julia Kristeva and Slavoj Žižek, as part of a continuum of centre-to-periphery representation predicated upon the West/East geopolitical split. Their respective work thus becomes relevant not only to Said's orientalism but, more specifically, to Todorova's concept of balkanism, as elucidated in her seminal work, Imagining the Balkans.

This article draws on case studies of nine working-class students at Southern, an elite university. 1 It attempts to understand the complexities of identities in flux through Bourdieu’s notions of habitus and field. Bourdieu (1990a) argues that when an individual encounters an unfamiliar field, habitus is transformed. He also writes of how the movement of habitus across new, unfamiliar fields results in ‘a habitus divided against itself ’ (Bourdieu, 1999a). Our data suggest more nuanced understandings in which the challenge of the unfamiliar results in a range of creative adaptations and multi-faceted responses. They display dispositions of self-scrutiny and self-improvement — almost ‘a constant fashioning and re-fashioning of the self ’ but one that still retains key valued aspects of a working-class self. Traditional Exam cell activity mostly includes a lot of manual paper work. The aim of the project is to build a centralized system so that all the examination activities can be done effectively and efficiently for both students and staff. The final system would constitute a computerized module aimed at replicating offline exam cell process. The system is a new concept which came into existence because of a large amount of data being on paper. The automated system for exam cell department will benefit both the students as well as exam cell department staff to easily handle the entire task related to exam cell in contrast to the existing manual system. This system will make the procedure of exam cell in an organized manner. Using this, paperwork and confusions can be reduced and the rate of work done can be increased. All the activities such as Exam form filling, ATKT form filling, photocopy and revaluation form filling, Form filling for RLE, Form LOR, MOI, Name Correction form etc. can be executed properly and easily using this automated system. With the help of this system, students can submit their forms online and will have no need to stand in a long queue waiting to submit their forms. The admin can also generate the Transcripts and Letter of Recommendation, and can also verify, confirm the photocopy and revaluation of each applied student by using the CLOUD COMPUTING Technology.

The psychoanalytic understanding of suicide has greatly expanded in the past 30 years, and the older therapeutic approach has been modified. Although the turning of murder on the self inferred by Freud 90 years ago remains a cornerstone, current practice concentrates on the identification of a precipitating event, the escalation of intolerable painful affect that the patient cannot moderate, the self-perception of helplessness, the evolution of hopelessness as a secondary affect, increasing fantasies of suicide as a means of escape, and ego regression (self-deconstruction), leading progressively to suicide. Recent clinical research, advances in the study of cognition, and neurobiological studies have contributed to the reorientation and enrichment of the psychoanalytic perspective on suicide. The treatment of a university student who had fallen into a suicide crisis is discussed from the psychoanalytic point of view, and evidence for the efficacy of this treatment is reviewed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thought-experiment presented by Bernard Williams in 'The self and the
future' continues to draw the attention of writers in the debate about personal
identity. While few of them agree on what implications it has for the
debate, almost all agree that those implications are significant ones. Some
have even claimed that it has consequences not only for personal identity,
but also concerning the viability of thought-experiment as a method. This
paper surveys what these consequences might be at both levels - as a
substantive contribution to the debate on identity, and as to what it shows
about the usefulness of thought-experiments. It argues ultimately that
thought-experiments like Williams's do provide a useful philosophical tool
as long as we temper our expectations of them, and that it offers some support
to a view of personal identity but one which is at odds with Williams's
own view.
