Music and Painting

Esteban Benzecry (compositor argentino, nacido en Lisboa en 1970) reúne en su primera sinfonía, por única vez, sus  expresiones artísticas favoritas: música y pintura. 
La sinfonía llamada “El compendio de la vida” fue compuesta en 1993 y estrenada por la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional en el Auditorio Belgrano de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, bajo la dirección de Pedro Ignacio Calderón en setiembre de 1994.  Su particularidad reside en que cada uno de sus cuatro movimientos se relaciona y lleva el nombre  de cuatro cuadros que componen una serie, del mismo compositor. Las pinturas estaban expuestas en el hall del Auditorio en ocasión del estreno, además de impresas en el programa de mano del concierto.
Este trabajo analiza cada movimiento de la obra y cada pintura de forma particular para luego deducir los elementos técnicos musicales que se utilizaron para realizar la transferencia de un lenguaje artístico a otro. Los datos obtenidos fueron validados mediante entrevistas al artista/compositor, artículos periodísticos, y el sitio web oficial. El abordaje metodológico es de carácter intersemiótico, utilizando para ello las teorías de Souriau y Genette, tomando como guía investigaciones que abordan casos de similares características de la Dra. Cintia Cristiá.

This thesis discusses the history of aesthetic relations in painting that's derived from music. It's attained from the Painting Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts - Helwan University in Cairo, in 2007,  & written in the Arabic Language. Paul Klee is not only one of the most important paintesr  of the 20th century, but also had a strong affinity for music. He wrote music reviews, played the violin excellently as an amateur and was in contact with many composers. With his works and his theoretical writings, such as the teaching materials at the Bauhaus, he still inspires numerous composers today. This volume presents texts on Klee's musically influenced and music-influencing works, in particular his preoccupation with Johann Sebastian Bach and the reception of his creative thinking in contemporary music from Pierre Boulez to Harrison Birtwistle. Previously unknown sources, numerous illustrations and reinterpretations help to provide new perspectives.

En la actualidad, sólo dos chilenos han sido galardonados con el Premio Nobel, Gabriela Mistral y Pablo Neruda; mundialmente famosos por representar una poética latinoamericana. Sin embargo, artistas de carácter popular también lograron prestigio internacional como voces poéticas tradicionales, como el caso de Violeta Parra. Universalmente conocida por la canción ‘Gracias a la vida', fue su obra visual la que le llevó a la cúspide del arte moderno occidental cuando expuso en el Museo del Louvre, siendo presentada como recolectora, investigadora y difusora de la cultura oral Chilena.  A partir de una investigación interdisciplinaria,  este trabajo intenta ofrecer una estética del perfil multifacético de Parra, el cual no ha sido suficientemente investigado. En la primera parte se presenta una breve reseña de la obra de la autora, así como las influencias artísticas e históricas. En seguida se expondrá una breve discusión sobre la faceta y fundamento interdisciplinario de Parra y cómo esto problematiza los cánones artísticos. A continuación, se examina brevemente una pintura y una canción para finalizar luego con reflexiones sobre estas habilidades y estéticas de profundas implicancias propias de un artista mayor. La deconstrucción del contenido poético, musical y visual, ofrece indicios importantes sobre cómo ciertas problemáticas Latinoamericanas están presentes en la obra de Parra, y cómo algunas de ellas se interrelacionan a través de las correspondencias de sonidos, palabras y colores. Sin embargo, el objetivo principal de este breve artículo es sugerir reflexiones sobre la contribución de Parra a la noción de identidad, chilenidad  -y quizá americanismo

Der musikalische Ton hat einen direkten Zugang zur Seele. Er findet da sofort einen Widerklang, da der Mensch "die Musik hat in sich selbst", heißt es in Kandinskys 1912 publizierter Schrift 'Über das Geistige in der Kunst'. "Jeder­ mann weiß, daß Gelb, Orange und Rot Ideen der Freude, des Reichtums, einflößen und darstellen" (Delacroix). Diese zwei Zitate zeigen die tiefe Ver­wandtschaft der Künste überhaupt und der Musik und Malerei insbesondere. Auf dieser auffallenden Verwandtschaft hat sich sicher der Gedanke Goethes konstruiert, daß die Malerei ihren Generalbaß erhalten muß.

The artistic thinking of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis — the Lithuanian composer, artist, photographer, and writer — was truly universal. Having decided to write the first opera in the Lithuanian language, Čiurlionis, following the ideas of R. Wagner, strove to create an ideal work of art. The preserved documents and sketches testify to the combination of the elements of sound, color, and light in one artwork. This article attempts to show how the main ideas were unrealized in his opera, but are embodied in the late work of the composer and artist.

Catalogue de l'exposition présentée à la Galerie d'art graphique, au Centre Pompidou, du 4 mars au 18 mai 2020. Rétrospective qui retrace le parcours artistique relativement bref de Wols, né à Berlin en 1913 et mort à l'âge de 38 ans en 1951. Photographe, peintre, dessinateur, graveur proche du surréalisme, féru de musique et de philosophie, Wols est considéré comme l'une des figures fondatrices de l'abstraction lyrique et un représentant incontournable de l'art informel en Europe. Mais son oeuvre très singulière transgresse largement ces catégories formatées. Moholy-Nagy lui recommande d'émigrer à Paris en 1932, où il rencontre Gréty Dabija qui l'introduit au climat surréaliste. Il y rencontre Jean Arp, Giacometti, Calder et Léger... Due to the fame of Delacroix's sitters, what is depicted in his double portrait of Chopin and George Sand has gained much more attention than how it is depicted. But it is exactly through close examination, especially of the characterization of gazes, the manner of painting and the peculiar position between portrait and history, that an interpretation emerges concerned with the connections between the material and the immaterial, or, in this special instance, between painting and music.

The paper analyzes Giorgione's painting The Three Ages of Live from the Galleria Palatina in Florence and argues that it can be understood as an artistic approach to express the musical harmony and its ideal, the musica mundana, through the medium of painting.

José Vassalo Pereira (1944-2016) was a physicist, mathematician, university professor and business manager, who, at the same time, was also a painter. A man of vast culture, also a great connoisseur of music, his pictorial work reflects his vast knowledge in the most diverse areas. However, living in an increasingly isolated way, in his «Ivory Tower», at Quinta de Santo António (in Rio de Mouro), we can say that he never exhibited his work during is life and only after his death its paintings could be known by the general public.

Το ξεκίνημα του 20ου αιώνα στον χώρο των τεχνών σηματοδοτείται από μια
πληθώρα νέων αισθητικών ρευμάτων και προσεγγίσεων, που ακολουθούν τις
ραγδαίες κοινωνικό-πολιτικές εξελίξεις της εποχής. Με την έλευση της
Βιομηχανικής Επανάστασης η κοινωνία, ήδη από τις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα σταδιακά
αναπρογραμματίζεται και έτσι η νέα πραγματικότητα που δομείται, βαθμιαία
διεισδύει και στον χώρο των τεχνών, δημιουργώντας νέες διακλαδώσεις
καλλιτεχνικών ρευμάτων με έντονο το στοιχείο της πρωτοπορίας και της αλλαγής. Οι
αλλαγές αυτές αποτυπώνονται σποραδικά στην τέχνη ήδη από τα μέσα του 19ου
αιώνα, με ορισμένες «εκλάμψεις» ριζοσπαστισμού, οι οποίες βάζουν τα θεμέλια για
τον μεγάλο 20ο αιώνα, όπου πλέον γίνεται έκδηλη η αύρα της ρήξης με το παρελθόν.
Σε γενικότερα πλαίσια οι αλλαγές που έφερε ο νέος αιώνας, μπορούν να
χαρακτηριστούν από μία ροπή προς το «αφηρημένο» και την αποδόμηση του
ακαδημαϊκής φόρμας. Ειδικότερα, μια ιδιόμορφη σχέση παρατηρείται μεταξύ
μουσικής και ζωγραφικής. Η απομάκρυνση της ζωγραφικής από την παραστατική
απεικόνιση του υλικού κόσμου τη συσχετίζει έντονα με τη «χειραφέτηση» της
μουσικής διαφωνίας που χαρακτήρισε αυτήν την περίοδο. Έτσι, η αφαίρεση στη
ζωγραφική και η εγκατάλειψη της τονικότητας στη μουσική, που συντελέστηκαν
σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα, καθόρισαν την πορεία του 20ου αιώνα και εγκαθίδρυσαν τον
μοντερνισμό στις τέχνες. Συγκεκριμένα, θα γίνει αναφορά σε δύο σημαντικούς
εκπροσώπους αυτών των πεδίων, τον Άρνολντ Σένμπεργκ και τον Βασίλι Καντίνσκι,
οι οποίοι με την απομάκρυνση από την κλασική ακαδημαϊκή δομική φόρμα
καθιέρωσαν νέες εκφραστικές και διανοητικές μεθόδους στα αντίστοιχα καλλιτεχνικά
πεδία, με την εδραίωση του εξπρεσιονιστικού ρεύματος.

This text proposes to use the two notions of analogy and homology as a key to understand some dimensions of the reception of works of art. It is studied here, in particular, the phenomenon of inter-artistic evocations not justified by the knowledge of the historical and cultural context of production. We recognize the various types of possible homologies between works of different artistic fields and the various phases of the expressive morphogenesis that originated them. And then, we present a homological model of the inter-artistic imaginary that takes into account both the archetypes and the processes of constitution of the sense.

, apresento e comento os resultados da pesquisa "Dramaturgia e Multissensorialidade: Metodologia de elaboração de audiocenas para ambientes online a partir da série Composições, de W. Kandinsky", financiada com recursos do Edital Universal CNPq de 2016. Durante três anos, foram executadas as seguintes atividades: 1) análise da série de 10 pinturas "Composição", por meio tanto dos textos produzidos por W. Kandinsky, quanto da recepção crítica de suas obras; 2) a partir das análises, elaboração de 10 orquestrações, uma para cada uma das pinturas do ciclo supracitado; 3) cada orquestração constituiu-se em roteiro para a produção de um vídeo que capta movi-mentos dentro dos quadros. 4) Ao fim, os vídeos, que conjugam as orquestrações e os movimentos no quadro são disponibilizados na rede mundial de computadores. Entre os resultados, além dos vídeos, cabe ressaltar a explicitação de uma poética multissensorial que trabalha nas fronteiras entre som e imagem. Tal poética se arti-cula em uma escrita exploratória que combina o traço do desenho e a grafia musical, trabalhando nas fronteiras entre o visível, o audível e não visível. A busca de Kandinsky por uma "arte sintética", a partir da releitura, entre outros diálogos, do conceito wagneriano da Gesamtkunstwerk, proporciona um espaço de reflexão e experimentação dessa poética multissensorial, que impulsionaria uma estética geral ou ampliada, a qual não apenas trabalharia com artes em contato, como também com a possibilidade de uma correlação entre processos criativos de diversas tradições composicionais.
