Gli autori tracciano un quadro della Cultura dei vasi a bocca quadrata dell’Italia nord-orientale alla luce dei risultati
emersi dalle nuove ricerche sul campo, che hanno consentito anche una revisione dei dati storici noti per il territorio.
Gli esordi di questo nuovo scenario culturale sono stati individuati al momento solo dal punto di vista tipologico nei siti di Lugo di Grezzana (Verona), Quinzano Veronese (Verona) e Fimon - Pianezze (Vicenza). Evidenze più significative provengono
dalla fase piena e finale della Cultura quella che storicamente viene identificata con lo “stile meandro-spiralico” e/o lo “stile ad incisioni ed impressioni”. Le recenti ricerche hanno infatti consentito una migliore definizione cronologica dei due aspetti, che
pur esprimendo una profonda differenza culturale, sembrano aver interagito e coesistito. La Cultura dei vasi a bocca quadrata si esaurisce in quest’area del Paese in modi non ancora del tutto chiari.
Per quanto riguarda i dati paleoeconomici, la ridotta presenza di siti analizzati nell’Italia nord-orientale e la difficoltà nell’individuare
delle differenze regionali, hanno reso necessario un ampliamento dell’area presa in esame. Le specie vegetali attestate
a fini agricoli comprendono un discreto numero di cereali e di leguminose, il lino e il papavero, ovvero sia specie derivate dal “pacchetto neolitico iniziale” proveniente dalla Mezzaluna Fertile, che specie secondariamente acquisite.
Per quanto riguarda invece la fauna, gli aspetti precoci della Cultura sembrano proporre una certa continuità nello sfruttamento delle prede selvatiche, cui si affianca l’allevamento di domestici più o meno rilevante a seconda del sito, a dimostrazione che l’attività di gestione del bestiame domestico non è ancora del tutto affermata. Con il II stile della Cultura sembra realizzarsi un incremento delle attività di allevamento e un apparente declino delle risorse selvatiche. In particolare nella fase successiva sembra evidenziarsi un incremento progressivo della rilevanza dell’allevamento ovicaprino che si affianca a
quello dei bovini e dei suini ed indica forse un cambiamento non solo nelle scelte economiche legate allo sfruttamento di
altri prodotti precedentemente considerati meno importanti, ma anche nelle caratteristiche dell’ambiente e delle modalità
insediative.
The authors trace a picture of the Square Mouthed Pottery (SMP) Culture in north-eastern Italy in the light of the
results emerging from new excavations, which have also made it possible to review old data regarding the area.
At the moment, typological aspects related to the beginning of this new cultural setting have only been identified at the sites of Lugo di Grezzana (Verona), Quinzano Veronese (Verona) and Fimon - Pianezze (Vicenza). There is more significant evidence relating to the main and final phase of the culture, historically identified as the “meandro-spiralico” style or the “ad incisioni ed impressioni” style. Recent research has indeed allowed better chronological definition of the two aspects, which albeit representing profound cultural differences, would seem to have interacted and coexisted. The SMP culture exhausted itself in this area of the country in a manner which has yet to be fully clarified.
As far as palaeo-economic data is concerned, the limited presence of sites analysed in north-eastern Italy and the difficulties in identifying regional differences have made it necessary to extend the area taken into consideration. The plant species known to have been used for agricultural purposes include a significant number of cereals and pulses, flax and poppy, hence both species deriving from the “initial Neolithic package” coming from the Fertile Crescent, and species acquired subsequently.
As regards fauna on the other hand, the early phases of the culture would seem to suggest a certain continuity in the exploitation of wild animals, combining with the rearing of domestic animals, which was more or less important depending on the site,
demonstrating that animal husbandry was not yet fully established. In the style II phase of the culture there would seem to have been an increase in the rearing of animals and an apparent decline in the use of wild resources. In particular, in the later phase
there was apparently a progressive increase in the importance of rearing sheep and goats, alongside the rearing of cattle and pigs, perhaps indicating a change not only in economic choices linked to the exploitation of other products previously considered to be less important, but also in the characteristics of the environment and settlement patterns.

La necropoli di Macchie Don Cesare nel territorio di Salve (LE) ha aggiunto nuovi dati alla conoscenza dei costumi funerari dell’eneolitico meridionale: ha rivelato, infatti, la pratica dell’incinerazione sotto tumulo affermatasi tra la metà del IV e il III millennio a.C.
I tumuli di Salve, fatti di terra e di pietre, ricoprivano monumenti realizzati con tipologie diverse, alcuni con articolazioni complesse al loro interno, altri molto semplici costituiti solo da una piattaforma basale su cui poggiavano i vasi con i resti incinerati o questi stessi sparsi sulla superficie, privi di contenitori. In nessuno dei tumuli era presente il corredo.
Ma, accanto all’incinerazione, nella necropoli è attestato anche l’uso dell’inumazione come nei tumuli 6, 9 e 7: nei primi due si trattava di ossa non combuste; nel tumulo 7, invece, all’interno di una cista litica che pure conteneva alla base tre incinerati, erano stati deposti circa 50 individui in seguito sottoposti a manipolazioni. Essi, a differenza degli incinerati avevano con sé il corredo i cui componenti, vasi in ceramica e oggetti di ornamento, sono molto simili a quelli rinvenuti a Grotta Cappuccini di Galatone.
E’ un quadro composito quello che restituisce la necropoli di Salve: documenta la pluralità di tradizioni esistente tra comunità che vivevano nel medesimo territorio e che condividevano la medesima cultura ispirata ai canoni di Gaudo e Laterza.
L’architettura dei tumuli, inoltre, rinvia a modelli diffusi che – se pure con tipologie varie – caratterizzavano il paesaggio funerario di molte regioni europee, inserendo il Salento in quel “mondo interconnesso” che era l’Europa del III millennio a.C.
Geomorfologia, paleobotanica, antropologia, analisi archeometriche contribuiscono a ricostruire una visione d’insieme in cui la dimensione funeraria risulta ancorata a dati di realtà che ne affiancano gli aspetti ideologici.
Non ultima, la cronologia: la serie di datazioni ottenuta dai vari tumuli fornisce importanti aggiornamenti sull’eneolitico meridionale, spostandone l’insorgenza alla metà del IV millennio in linea con quanto avviene nel resto della penisola.

La presencia de pino piñonero (Pinus pinea) en la cubierta forestal del Sur de la Península Ibérica, se deduce de los estudios arqueológicos prehistóricos y protohistóricos. Apesar de ello, existe todavía un notable déficit en la bibliografía actual para adjudicarle un papel en la dinámica natural vegetal.

The small, intramontane San Giorgio Basin in southwestern Sardinia has yielded plant macrofossils dominated by sphenophytes, but with subsidiary pteridosperms, ferns, (?)noeggerathians and cordaitanthaleans. They belong to the upper part of the Crenulopteris acadica Zone or possibly the Odontopteris cantabrica Zone, indicating a late Asturian or Cantabrian (late Moscovian) age. They therefore correlate with the post-Leonian deposits in northern Spain, the Nýřany Member in Western and Central Bohemia, and the Llantwit Beds in South Wales. The presence of post-tectonic deposits of this age is further evidence of the widespread influence of the Leonian Phase of tectonic activity in middle Asturian times, whose effect can be observed across Europe. The San Giorgio Basin is therefore a late Variscan rather than post-Variscan basin.

The Crato Formation paleoflora is one of the few equatorial floras of the Early Cretaceous. It is diverse,
with many angiosperms, especially representatives of the clades magnoliids, monocotyledons and eudicots,
which confirms the assumption that angiosperm diversity during the last part of the Early Cretaceous was
reasonably high. The morphology of a new fossil monocot is studied and compared to all other Smilacaceae
genus, especially in the venation. Cratosmilax jacksoni gen. et sp. nov. can be related to the Smilacaceae
family, becoming the oldest record of the family so far. Cratosmilax jacksoni is a single mesophilic leaf
with entire margins, ovate shape, with acute apex and base, four venation orders and main acrodromous
veins. It is the first terrestrial monocot described for the Crato Formation, monocots were previously
described for the same formation, and are considered aquatics. Cratosmilax jacksoni is the first fossil
record of Smilacaceae in Brazil, and the oldest record of this family.

This brief report deals with the content and destiny of a research project, which was planned and carried out in 1940–1941 by the Laboratory of Conservation and Restoration of Documents and the Institute of Oriental Studies, Academy of Sciences of the URSS, involving paleobotanist Vsevolod Petrov and prominent arabist academician Ignatiy Krachkovskiy. This project was aimed at investigation of the materials that had been used for paper production in Central and so called Middle Asia from the 6th to the 15th centuries. More than 80 paper manuscripts from the Dunhuang, Khara-Khoto, Kashgarian and Arabic collections of the Institute of Oriental Studies were analyzed. The project wasn’t accomplished, as the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War and the Blockade of Leningrad roughly changed the plans and lives of the scientists, and all research records along with laboratory equipment were destroyed.
