Mémoire d'étude de Master 1 à l'Ecole du Louvre, sous la direction de Béatrice de Chancel-Bardelot et Jean-Christophe Ton-That

Le but de cette étude monographique est d’apporter de nouvelles connaissances et d’émettre des hypothèses sur la frise dite « des abbés d’Ennezat » conservée au musée d’art Roger-Quilliot de Clermont-Ferrand et provenant de la collégiale Saint-Victor et Sainte-Couronne d’Ennezat. Il s’agira de replacer cette peinture monumentale sur bois du XIIIe siècle, reflet et témoin précieux de l’art gothique auvergnat, dans l’histoire et la production artistique de ce territoire. Ce travail de recherche s’inscrit également dans le projet culturel et scientifique du musée et vise à conforter une prochaine et nécessaire restauration de l’oeuvre.

During the last two centuries before the Renaissance of the arts in Italy in the 15th century, different waves of classical trends marked the artistic creation of both Byzantine and western worlds. Between 1220 and 1260 in particular, a parallel development of the revival of ancient forms is noted in both of the above-mentioned traditions. Various artistic expressions later developed independently.
The various artistic tendencies of the period under discussion are well known by the critics but usually Byzantine and Western cultures are studied separately. In the present paper, it is interesting to expose some aspects of the revivals of ancient art in both worlds, namely Byzantine and Latin, during the 13th and 14th centuries. In this way, it will, firstly, be possible to establish a more appropriate method for examining the origin of this extensive wave of ancient revival that took place during the 13th century. Secondly, it is useful to note how this Proto-Renaissance gave way under the weight of more conservative Byzantine forms in 14th century Byzantine painting and, thirdly, it is instructive to show an interpretation of how, in the West, namely in Italy, the classical forms developed unimpeded from 1260 onwards so that they eventually continued into the great Renaissance.
For this purpose, I shall first briefly expose the historical and political situation of the Byzantine Empire vis-à-vis the European world during the period under consideration. I shall then touch upon the artistic phenomena, pointing out the most characteristic cases.

The study focuses on the republican murals painted on the walls of two cities, Belfast and Derry, in May 2009. The idea for the study was born during a trip to Northern Ireland during which I had the opportunity to observe the murals and to talk with some of the authors and with persons who had actually experienced
the events represented in the murals.
The nationalist murals have been studied by the author under different perspectives: language, iconography, political symbolism and social environment. Murals are, for sure, the community’s reaction to the British political and violent domination on Northern Ireland and they become instruments of rebellion representing
a collective request for freedom and independence. But they also represent a more complex phenomenon as they embody values and perspectives of the entire nationalist community in Northern Ireland. The study analyses the murals both as single artworks and as a collective phenomenon.A strong focus is given at all the political and social themes represented in the murals and at the different linguistic and iconographic styles of communication
as well as how different themes and styles combine. The nationalist murals are also examined under an artistic perspective with a special focus on the figure of the “artista armato”, the artist as a warrior that uses art as an instrument for communicating higher, collective (moral, social, religious, political) values. This
perspective brings the author to draw and analyse a parallel between the phenomenon of nationalist murals and Futurist art: a comparison based on the themes represented in the artworks, on the placing of the art pieces and on the social role of the artists.
If words, pictures and colours used in the nationalist murals become, as analysed in the study, the voice of the Catholic community in Northern Ireland, a voice not so often listened in the EU, it becomes crucial to understand what the artists
want to communicate, why and how. This study aims also to open up to a new research perspective based on a multidisciplinary approach through the integrated use of semiotics and semantics in ethnography in order to offer a more complete and holistic interpretation of the phenomenon of the Northern Irish republican
murals.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT
In this article, we examine the iconographical and textual evidence of Judas's damnation. Are his byzantine and post-byzantine representations in Hell corresponding to the canonical or extra-canonical sources and if so, in which degree? Firstly we consider the dominant iconographic theme of Judas on the Devil's lap and secondly we focus on the images deviating from the conventional type and indicating in a more or less evident way either the punishment imposed to the traitor, or the exact reason for his damnation. Lastly, we examine two remarkable post-byzantine representations of Judas' Suicide that through their atypical iconography add a further dimension to his fate in the afterlife.

RÉSUMÉ FRANÇAIS
Dans cet article nous examinons le témoignage iconographique et textuel de la damnation de Judas. Ses représentations byzantines et post-byzantines en enfer correspondent-elles aux sources canoniques ou extra-canoniques et si oui, à quel point ? En premier, nous abordons le thème iconographique dominant de Judas dans le giron du Diable, et deuxièmement, nous distinguons les images qui dévient du type traditionnel pour indiquer de manière plus ou moins évidente soit le châtiment infligé au traître, soit la raison exacte de sa damnation. Pour finir, nous examinons deux représentations remarquables du Suicide qui de par leur atypie iconographique ajoutent une dimension supplémentaire au sort de Judas dans l'au-delà.

RESUMEN ESPAÑOL
En este artículo examinamos la evidencia iconográfica y textual de la condena de Judas. ¿Se corresponden sus representaciones bizantinas y post-bizantinas en el infierno a las fuentes canónicas o extra-canónicas y, si es así, hasta qué punto? En primer lugar abordamos el tema iconográfico dominante de Judas en el regazo del diablo; en segundo lugar, distinguimos las imágenes que se desvían del tipo tradicional para indicar de manera más o menos evidente ya sea el castigo infligido al traidor o la razón exacta de su condenación. Finalmente, examinamos dos representaciones notables del suicidio de Judas que por su rareza iconográfica añaden una dimensión suplementaria a la suerte de Judas en el más allá.

Résumé : La maison du 1, rue du Bouclier, abritant actuellement l’hôtel du Bouclier d’or, a été reconstruite en 1552. Acquise par Ulrich de Turckheim en 1570, elle a été ornée de peintures murales dégagées en 2010. Au rez-de-chaussée, le décor héraldique, inspiré des vitraux de cabinet, se conjugue avec les motifs de prédilection de la Renaissance et, à l’étage, une colonne polychromée fait face à une colonne feinte. Ce décor a été complété par le peintre Edgar Mahler, bien connu pour ses façades librement inspirées de la Renaissance. Malgré une intervention un peu poussée, visant à la création d’une atmosphère adaptée à la nouvelle fonction du lieu, l’iconographie demeure d’un grand intérêt pour l’étude des décors civils de la fin du XVIe siècle.

Zusammenfassung : Das Gebäude, 1, Rue de Bouclier, welches zur Zeit das Hotel „Zum Goldenen Schild“ beherbergt, wurde Im Jahre 1552 erbaut. Erworben durch Ulrich de Turckheim im Jahre 1570, wurde es durch Wandgemälde verziert, die 2010 freigelegt wurden. Im Erdgeschoss verbindet sich durch Buntglasschränke inspiriertes Wappendekor mit bekannten Motiven der Renaissance und in den höheren Stockwerken steht eine vielfarbige einer falschen Säule gegenüber. Dieses Dekor wurde durch den Maler Edgar Mahler vervollständigt, der für seine frei an die Renaissance angelehnten Fassaden bekannt ist. Trotz eines weitgehenden Eingriffs, der darauf zielte, die Atmosphäre an die neue Funktion des Gebäudes anzupassen, bleibt die Ikonographie von großem Interesse für das Studium des bürgerlichen Dekors Ende des 16. En 1925, à Bambari, André Gide et Marc Allégret assistent à une danse d’initiation ganza des Banda de l’Oubangui-Chari. Pendant qu’Allégret filme le spectacle, Gide rédige des pages désabusées sur cette mise en scène organisée pour les Blancs de passage. Mais l’écrivain à sa manière, les administrateurs et les missionnaires auxquels on doit la reconnaissance
ethnographique des populations banda à la leur, ont toutefois en commun de rêver à l’authenticité d’une cérémonie inexistante, qu’ils doivent nécessairement situer dans un passé révolu. Pourtant, des images de la première moitié du siècle – photographies, scènes filmées, dessins réalisés par des Européens qui ont traversé hâtivement ces régions – permettent
d’apercevoir une dynamique précoce, mise en branle par des groupes banda lorsqu’ils modifient la danse ganza pour y incorporer des éléments étrangers et entamer un processus de resémantisation d’artefacts initiatiques qui est encore à l’oeuvre aujourd’hui. Cet article présente
certaines de ces images coloniales : leur analyse révèle les regards successifs qui ont pesé sur ces sociétés centrafricaines, mais elle permet aussi d’avancer des hypothèses sur le destin récent de ces artefacts. Ceux-ci continuent, en l’absence de contextes initiatiques disparus, d’être reconstitués, modifiés et resignifiés. Leur exhibition suscite dans les populations des réactions ambivalentes où l’appréciation, ou la nostalgie du passé peuvent côtoyer la panique à l’égard du danger que représentent des objets de sorcellerie.

André Gide and Marc Allégret witnessed a ganza initiation dance of the Banda of Oubangui-Chari in Bambari in 1925. While Allégret filmed the spectacle, Gide jotted down a few pages expressing disappointment at the performance organized for Whites passing through. But the French writer
and, for different and sometimes conflicting reasons, the administrators and missionaries to whom we owe our earliest ethnographic information on the Banda, were both dreaming of the authenticity of a non-existent ceremony that, for them, was necessarily part of a remote past. By contrast, the images from the first half of the century – photographs, filmed scenes, drawings
executed by Europeans who passed quickly through these regions – show that very early on some Banda groups had begun to modify the ganza dance so as to introduce extraneous features and begin a process (which is still evolving) of resemanticizing the initiatory artefacts. This article presents some of these colonial images: an analysis of them reveals, above all, the gaze that, time and again, has weighed on Central African societies, but also allows us to advance some hypothesis on the more recent destiny of these artefacts, which, in the absence of the original initiatory contexts, continue to be reconstructed, sometimes modified, and to be given new significance. Their display arouses ambivalent reactions in the populations, where appreciation of and nostalgia for the past combine with panic at the danger represented by objects of witchcraft.

Cet article analyse la présence iconographique des martyrs dans l’espace urbain en Iran, et particulièrement de Téhéran, en prenant en compte les dimensions historiques, techniques et institutionnelles, mais aussi les demandes sociales et politiques à l’encontre de ces espaces urbains contrôlés par les pouvoirs en Iran. Il interrogera aussi les modalités d’apparition d’autres martyrs, liés à d’autres conflits dans lesquels est impliqué la République islamique d'Iran.

À l’intérieur de l’édifice du Valentin, sur l’abside que Gino Severini achève de peindre en 1934, le ton est donné : sur fond d’or, la Sainte Vierge à l’Enfant relie Rome la catholique et Lausanne la protestante, signalées à droite par St-Pierre du Vatican, à gauche par la Cathédrale du chef-lieu vaudois... et par la récente tour Bel-Air (1931), symbole du cosmopolitisme d’une ville alors en plein redimensionnement. La peinture murale de Severini est audacieuse à maints égards : à la fois byzantinisante et « cubiste », elle est singularisée par un fond d’or unique en Suisse romande et se distingue par une certaine complexité de composition et par sa monumentalité — « une merveille », dira le futur cardinal Charles Journet. L'œuvre prend sens dans le contexte de la rénovation ambitieuse de l’église par l’architecte Fernand Dumas, membre du groupe de Saint-Luc, et constitue une porte d’entrée de choix sur l'actualité intellectuelle, religieuse et artistique de la Suisse romande de l’entre-deux guerres.
