Revolts

The Theses LVI belong to a series of hitherto unpublished early manuscripts of the Dutch humanist and jurisconsult Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) that were acquired by the University of Leiden in 1864. It is not certain when the Theses were written, but preliminary research on the physical manuscript and the sources cited indicate two possible windows. The first is around 1602-1605, that is roughly at a time when Grotius was also working on his Commentary on the Law of Prize and Booty (De Iure Praedae Commentarius). The second dating places the genesis of the manuscrbipt around 1613-1615.
In the context of Grotius’ writings, the Theses LVI assume an important position for several reasons: They raise questions about state formation, the duty of citizens to the state and the right of political resistance in far greater detail than in any other work of the celebrated Dutch humanist. The Theses LVI also feature important reading notes that yield priceless insights into the sources that Grotius directly consulted and their influence on his ideas. The manuscript grants modern scholars a unique glimpse into the working mind of its author. Cosa significa protestare per le strade, perché occupare uno spazio nella città? Veniamo da un recente risveglio, da anni che hanno riportato la politica nelle piazze e nelle strade. In tutto il mondo uomini e donne sono scesi in piazza manifestando un'urgenza condivisa di resistenza, di riappropriazione degli spazi e della capacità di agire e fare politica a partire dalle vite. Come comprendere la specificità di queste esperienze? Perché chiamarle rivolte urbane e non rivoluzioni? Quali sono gli strumenti per leggere una rivolta senza astrarre, generalizzare, neutralizzare? Stare per le strade è la pratica di 'stasis' che crea lo spazio per la rivolta e contemporaneamente dispone un modo affettivo di vivere lo spazio urbano. Durante una protesta, la corporeità è esposta in tutta la sua intensità appassionata e vulnerabile. Il corpo al centro permette di cogliere la relazione che questi eventi intessono con gli spazi urbani, il nuovo senso della politica che propongono e i rapporti tra uomini e donne nel momento della protesta.

This paper addresses the question about what happened to Kino's "neat little house and church" that was built at Guevavi in 1701. Archaeological evidence from recent excavations, along with documentary data, suggest this structure was destroyed as a result of an O'odham rebellion.

Nell’intera opera sia di Walter Benjamin che di Furio Jesi si incontrano spesso dei binarismi di pensiero, delle alternative dialettiche, degli aut-aut, che ci si propone in questo lavoro di analizzare in quanto obiettivo polemico tanto del filosofare benjaminiano che del pensiero jesiano. Sia Benjamin che Jesi sembra, infatti, che vogliano dimostrare chiaramente come i due possibili e antitetici momenti di una dialettica, in realtà, anche se contrastanti e opposti l’uno all’altro, soggiacciono alla stessa logica, alla stessa grammatica di fondo. Lo stesso porre due polarità come dialetticamente contrapposte e antagoniste, crea sì un movimento che si basa su l’attrito e lo scontro, ma, allo stesso tempo, ci irretisce in quello stesso movimento e processo, creando una potentissima logica e onto-logica che ci impedisce di vedere un fuori da questo stesso movimento e processo.

This article analyses the significance of written documents during late medieval revolts. Although literacy was by modern standards quite limited, wirrten documents nevertheless enjoyed an an aura of credibility and reliability. Thus reports on the public destruction, seizing, and defiling of unpopular
documents or the issuing of new ones are frequent in accounts of late medieval revolts. Indeed, even illiterates could distinguish between types of documents by their material form, i.e. their colours, seals or display type. The ability to read was therefore not necessary to comprehend symbolic
acts in connection with the written word. Thus, the article sheds light on the performative aspects of documents: the showing or destroying of a document implied communication.

This article studies the causes of the revolutions developed in some Arab countries in 2011. They are known as «the Arab Spring». It also delves in the examination of their results and, more specifically, in the role assumed by Islamic political parties and movements. It also keeps attention to the influence that they have had in the new Constitutions within a period of tense political transition

During the eleventh century various Italian nobles, churchmen and cities rebelled against Imperial rule. To counter this, the Salian emperors enacted various measures to assert their authority including the construction of relationship networks and an imperial identity. This paper will argue that the developing imperial identity can be seen in the changing language used to describe collective action within the cities of Italy. It will focus in particular on the use of the term cives within imperial charters and narrative sources arguing that this term was not selected for its social connotations, but rather for its political and rhetorical value. I will argue that the term held connotations of an inviolable connection between the Emperor and his cives and that this could be used both positively to justify imperial rule and negatively to undermine rebellions.

What grounds gave birth to December’s revolt and most importantly, what new grounds has the revolt given birth to in return? The political background of the events of those days and their repercussions are dis-cussed extensively in the next part of this book. What we have tried to do here is to take a look at the actual, physical grounds of the uprising and its legacies — to read it, that is, through its inscription in the urban space of the city of Athens. To look at urban struggles in new sites of confrontation that have opened up there since; everyday reminders that December lives.

Il 1920 è un anno di svolta nella storia del primo dopoguerra italiano. Scandito dalle agitazioni nelle campagne, dall'occupazione delle fabbriche, dalle elezioni amministrative e dall'avvio dell'offensiva fascista, costituisce la conclusione di un ciclo di rivolte e proteste che era iniziato nel 1917. Le ribellioni, le barricate e gli assalti ai carabinieri e alle guardie regie della primavera-estate del 1920 rappresentano un punto di osservazione privilegiato per comprendere le forme più radicali della violenza squadrista che precedono l'ascesa squadrista. Qual è la genealogia della violenza popolare? Che cos'è il "massimalismo"? La categoria di "brutalizzazione della politica" è utile alla comprensione del primo dopoguerra? Per rispondere a questi interrogativi, il libro si sofferma in particolare sui tumulti di Viareggio - scaturiti dall'uccisione, per mano di un carabiniere, di un guardalinee durante il tafferuglio nato al termine di una partita di calcio -, sulla rivolta di Ancona e più in generale sul movimento popolare contro la spedizione militare in Albania. Ricostruendo le pratiche politiche, le ideologie, le relazioni sociali e i linguaggi di queste sommosse e rivolte, Italia ribelle fornisce una contributo inedito allo studio della violenza popolare proponendo uno scavo analitico delle culture repressive che hanno caratterizzato gli apparati dello Stato liberale.
