이 연구는 급속도로 변한 도정도구 변화를 단순한 기술발전이 아니라 쌀의 상품화와 그에 따른 농업·농촌의 문화 변동이라고 여기고 이를 연구대상으로 삼았다. 특히 19세기 말 시작된 연료 이용 정미 도입과 식민지시기를 전후로 보급되는 과정 그리고 이에 대한 반작용(reaction)이라 할 수 있는 1920~1930년대 무연료 정미기 발명과 발명가들에 대해서 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 식민지시기 출간된 조선미(朝鮮米)와 정미기에 대한 연구서, 특허문서 및 통계자료 및 신문 기사 등을 1차 사료로 삼아 분석하였다.
이 연구를 통해 연료 이용 정미기 도입과 보급은 기술 발전에 따른 ‘근대화’ 과정이 아니라 조선미(朝鮮米)가 1890년을 기점으로 일본을 소비시장으로 하는 상품화 과정 속에서 이뤄졌음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 조선총독부가 실시한 산미증식계획을 바탕으로 하는 생산량 증가와 이출량 증가 및 미곡검사제도는 연료 이용 정미기 보급을 더욱 추동한 원인이 되었다.
하지만 1920~1930년 식민지 조선의 농촌사회와 농가, 특히 영세농가들은 연료 이용 정미기를 완전히 받아들일 수 없었다. 왜냐하면 1920년대 전반기 조선총독부의 식민지 농정과 농업의 일본 시장 종속화로 인하여 양극화를 격심하게 겪었고 1920년대 후반부터 세계대공황으로 촉발된 농업공황을 거치면서 하위에 속하는 많은 농가가 몰락한 상황이었다. 이러한 상황에서 설비와 운용에 많은 자본이 필요한 연료 이용 정미기는 식민지 조선의 농촌사회와 농가에 부담이었다.
무연료 정미기 발명가들은 이 같은 현실 속에서 연료 이용 정미기의 대안으로 무연료 정미기를 발명했다. 발명가들은 연료 이용 정미기보다 초기비용이 저렴하고 석유가 아닌 인력, 축력, 수력 등을 동력원으로 운용하며 더 나아가 재래 도정도구보다 뛰어난 생산성을 가질 수 있는 무연료 정미기를 발명하고자 했다.
결과적으로 무연료 정미기는 식민지 조선에 폭 넓게 보급되지는 않았다. 그러나 1920~1930년대 무연료 정미기 발명은 식민지 조선의 발명가라는 새로운 행위자들이 연료 이용 정미기 보급이라는 ‘근대화’에 대해 자본과 제국 일본의 시선이 아니라 식민지 조선 농촌사회와 농가의 시선에서 바라본 비판적 고찰을 현실화한 결과물이라 할 수 있다.

Từ sự kiện lịch sử Hạn mặn năm 2015-2016 dẫn tới những thiệt hại to lớn đối với nông dân trồng lúa vụ 3 ở Đồng bằng Sông Cửu Long, bài viết thảo luận nguyên nhân gây ra tình trạng dễ tổn thương của nông dân. Tại sao họ lại dễ bị thiệt hại từ hạn mặn? Sâu xa hơn, tại sao họ lại chấp nhận làm một vụ lúa rủi ro lớn như vậy? Để làm rõ điều đó, bài viết sử dụng dữ liệu định tính gồm phỏng vấn nông hộ và cán bộ địa phương cùng với phân tích tài liệu để chỉ ra những nguyên do tới từ HIỆN TẠI VÀ QUÁ KHỨ và từ phía NÔNG HỘ VÀ CHÍNH SÁCH, THỂ CHẾ. Bốn khía cạnh này cắt nhau. Ở chiều hiện tại, nông hộ thiếu hụt kinh nghiệm ứng phó với hạn mặn, tâm lý chủ quan, sự phụ thuộc vào độc canh lúa, và tâm lý đánh cược với thiên tai từ phía nông dân cùng với môi trường thiếu hụt các hỗ trợ chuyển đổi sinh kế từ môi trường chính sách kết hợp với nhau. Ở chiều quá khứ, đó là chính sách tăng cường nông nghiệp sau thống nhất đất nước cùng với quá trình xây dựng hệ thống thủy lợi ngăn mặn giữ ngọt khiến cho nông dân có cơ hội chuyển đổi từ một vụ/năm lên 2-3 vụ/năm. Từ đó vụ 3 trở thành một điểm nóng, vực giới hạn khiến nông dân đứng trước rủi ro cực lớn từ hạn hán và xâm nhập mặn. Như vậy, tính dễ tổn thương của nông dân trồng lúa vụ 3 trước hạn mặn là kết quả phát triển từ lịch sử tương tác giữa nông dân với tư cách là các chủ thể có năng lực hành động và môi trường chính sách thể chế với tư cách là cấu trúc xã hội.

Rice is the chief food for about two billion people living in Asia. It has been stated to contain substantial quantity of inorganic arsenic which is noxious to pancreatic beta cells and disturb glucose homeostasis. Millions of consumers around the world may have high Arsenic (As) ingestion from imported rice and rice-based foods, due to the rapid expansion of the global food trade. Arsenic revelation has been linked with enhanced blood glucose and insulin levels, or reduced sensitization of insulin cells to glucose uptake. Arsenic is present in diverse oxidative statuses in the atmosphere and enters in the food chain through soil and water. In the agronomic field, irrigation with arsenic contaminated water, having a greater level of arsenic contamination on the topsoil, affect the quality of crop production. The chief crop like rice (Oryza sativa L.) entails huge amount of water throughout its lifecycle. Rice plants possibly accumulate arsenic, predominantly inorganic arsenic (iAs) from the field, in diverse body parts including grains. Inorganic As varieties are carcinogenic to humans and even at low levels in the diet sham a significant risk to individuals. Extreme accepted daily intake of arsenic accumulated rice (2.1 µg/day kg body weight) has been fixed by WHO, which may be outdone responsible on its content in rice and amount consumed. Hence, enhanced dominance of diabetes in South Asia may be allied to the ingesting of arsenic contaminated rice. In this work, we have focused on the likely relation between rice consumption, arsenic accumulation, and risk assessment in South Asia.

In this article, I will examine the myth of the origin of rice (dhānyer janma) in the texts attributed to Rāmāi Paṇḍit, the first priest of the Bengali god Dharmarāj. The myth, which features a form of Śiva as a ploughing god (kr̥ṣak debatā), has long been considered a late interpolation following the spread of the Bengali śaiva culture. In fact, the śaiva (nāth) element is earlier than Dharmarāj mythology and, with all probability, originated in eastern Bengal. This thesis will be discussed along a cross-examination Dharmaite literature, Bengali Nāth texts, epigraphic sources, and a historical study of the hydrogeological shift of the Bengal river complexes. In so doing, the paper offers a unique perspective to appreciate forms of mythopoesis and the dynamics of circulation of narratives and rituals in medieval Bengal with respect to agricultural knowledge and the biodiversity inherent to Bengali cereal culture.

A hydroponic system is seen as an alternative rice cultivation system that possibly be able to overcome common problems encountered in conventional and traditional paddy cultivation such as irrigation systems, limited cultivation area, control of nutrient inputs, control of pests, and loss of community interest particularly the new generation towards paddy cultivation. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted to examine the vegetative growth of two local rice varieties under hydroponic condition. The experiment was a split plot design or 2x2 factorial design, where the main plot is a nutrient solution concentration, NCS with two levels (i.e., 600-700 ppm and 800-900 ppm) and the subplot is a local rice variety consisting of TQR-8 Sri Aman and upland rice variety called as ‘Tadong’. Each treatment was replicated in four plants or pots. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent-samples t-test were employed in the data analysis. RESUMO No final do século XIX com a proposta de criação de " colônias estrangeiras " foi impulsionada a compra e venda de terras para a ocupação da paisagem do nordeste de Santa Catarina. Durante o processo de formação da Colônia Dona Francisca, o arroz pode ser destacado como uma das atividades agrícolas que imigrantes europeus buscaram cultivar entre as picadas e os roçados abertos na paisagem local. A partir de fontes escritas por imigrantes e viajantes é possível identificar algumas das representações sobre o arroz na Colônia. O artigo pretende analisar narrativas acerca de práticas do cultivo de arroz e suas correlações com as estratégias de " domesticação " e transformação da paisagem na Colônia Dona Francisca, Santa Catarina. in boro season during December 2016 to June 2017 to find out the effect of salinity on yield and yield attributes of rice varieties. Seven rice varieties (Pokkali, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan61, BRRI dhan74, Binadhan-8 and Binadhan-10) and three salinity levels viz., control (no salinity), moderate salinity (8 dSm-1) and strong salinity (12 dSm-1) were assigned in two factors completely randomized design with 3 replications. Number of tillers hill-1 , number of panicles hill-1 , panicle length, grains panicle-1 , grain weight hill-1 , 1000 grain weight and straw weight hill-1 were significantly reduced with the increase in salinity levels in all rice varieties by different degree. In response to yield performance, Binadhan-8, Binadhan-10 and BRRI dhan74 were found as tolerant, Pokkali and BRRI dhan47 as moderate tolerant and BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan61 as susceptible up to a certain salinity level.
