Roger Casement

Roger Casement made two journeys to Argentina: the first was in 1907 and the second was in 1910. Little is known about either trip beyond a few fragmentary references in letters and some encrypted entries in the contested Black Diaries. Nonetheless, these traces would suggest that Casement was connected into a vibrant Irish-Argentinian network that played a vital role in the independence struggle before and after 1916. Through reconstructing evidence of these visits and locating his friendships within Ireland's broader transnational struggle, this essay excavates a dimension of informal diplomacy that prepared the ground for the emergence of Irish foreign policy after 1919.

Biography (in French) of Félix Fuchs, Governor General of the Congo Free State and Belgian Congo.
Le présent ouvrage ouvrage, conçu comme une biographie, analyse essentiellement la carrière coloniale de Félix Fuchs, qui couvre environ les années 1888 à 1915. Au niveau même de celle-ci, l'accent est mis sur les moments où Fuchs exerce les fonctions de Gouverneur Général. A ce propos, soulignons dès l'abord que Fuchs, s'il ne porte le titre officiel de Gouverneur Général du Congo belge que du 20 mai 1912 au 31 décembre 1915, a néanmoins déjà exercé cette fonction de manière intérimaire dès 1891, c'est-à-dire sous l'Etat Indépendant du Congo.

Bryan MacMahon’s 1966 Easter Rising Pageant, Seachtar Fear, Seacht Lá (Seven Men, Seven Days) is currently written out of the master narrative of 1916’s cultural history. When mentioned, its radical inclusion of female, queer, and post-independent Ireland’s politically “dissident” voices —  those of socialists, loyalists, feminists, and World War I enlistees — is never acknowledged. MacMahon’s secular and inclusive production departs from the masculinist and narrowly ideological precedent set by Pearse’s pageants. Seachtar’s singling out of Connolly, its writing back of women into 1916, its suggestively-worded evocation of the 1965 return of the remains of Roger Casement, and its skepticism regarding the platitudes of nationalist historiography all amount to a plea to resuscitate the Rising’s elided socialist, feminist, and even queer agendas. In addition, it provocatively enfolds contemporary Ulster loyalism.

This is the exhibition curated by Professor Laura Izarra in 2016 on Roger Casement and the Brazilian photographer, Silvino Santos. The exhibition borrowed heavily from the exhibition that I curated with Professor Izarra on Roger Casement that was exhibited in a series of spaces across South America and Europe.

Este trabajo, con algunos retoques, corresponde al último apartado del tercer capítulo de mi ensayo El Perú escindido (Ediciones Irreverentes, 2012), obra en la que intenté abordar, confrontándolas, las propuestas estéticas e ideológicas de dos de los autores más representativos del Perú del S. XX: José María Arguedas y Mario Vargas Llosa. El análisis de la que hasta entonces era la última novela de Vargas Llosa, "El sueño del celta", pretendía apuntalar, a través del comentario de algunos de sus aspectos, una de las ideas principales desarrolladas en el mencionado capítulo 3: la consideración de toda la producción intelectual del nobel de literatura como un espacio coherente en el que sus diferentes manifestaciones tenían como denominador común la defensa de una determinada teoría de los valores.

It will be held in the Royal Dublin Society at 6 o'clock on Friday 28 September.

As far as I can tell, Oscar Wilde was the first person to make a comment about biofiction.  In this paper, I examine what led Wilde to think about biofiction, and I demonstrate that many contemporary authors of biofiction have adopted his aesthetic approach, whether they know his work or not.  I focus on William Styron's The Confessions of Nat Turner, Colm Toibin's The Master, Colum McCann's TransAtlantic, and Mario Vargas Llosa's The Dream of the Celt.

Esta tese versa sobre os Bora, habitantes do rio Igaraparaná, afluente do rio Putumayo, na Colômbia. Os Bora fazem parte do complexo cultural dos autodenominados “Povos do Centro” na Amazônia Ocidental. O trabalho encontra-se dividido em duas partes. Na primeira, composta de dois capítulos, aborda-se o tema das transformações históricas vividas pelos Boras desde os primeiros contatos com o mundo não-indígena. Apresenta- se a divisão nativa da história em uma série de Tempos que se encontram diretamente relacionados a determinados bens: machados de metal, caucho, peles de animais, coca e “projetos”. Tais épocas ou Tempos são eles mesmos englobados por dois macro-períodos, conhecidos como Tempo dos Animais e Tempo da Abundância. A segunda parte da tese, por sua vez dividida em cinco capítulos, trata da maneira pela qual a passagem do Tempo dos Animais para o Tempo da Abundância se evidencia em mudanças no parentesco, na organização social e nas práticas rituais, que ocorrem especialmente a partir do final do boom caucheiro. O objetivo da segunda parte é menos o de compilar narrativas históricas sobre o período do que analisar em detalhes os dados que mostram como os Bora produziram, eles mesmos, tais transformações. Dá-se especial ênfase aqui à oposição complementar e assimétrica entre chefes e órfãos, duas categorias centrais para se compreender o mundo dos Povos do Centro do passado e do presente. Argumenta-se que foi em torno desse eixo relacional que os Bora operaram o processo que lhes permitiu, após o holocausto caucheiro, Amanhecer novamente.

This essay reviews four recent studies relevant to late nineteenth-century imperialism. The titles and authors are: The Dawn Watch: Joseph Conrad in a Global World, by Maya Jasanoff; British Humanitarianism and the Congo Reform Movement, 1896-1913, by Dean Pavlakis;
The Politics of Dissent: A Biography of ED Morel, by Donald Mitchell; and Rubber Justice: Dr Harry Guinness and the Congo Reform Campaign, by Catherine Guinness. The essay focuses principally on the figure of E.D. Morel, the activist-writer and driving force behind both the Congo Reform Association and Union of Democratic Control. This year marks the centenary of Morel's release from prison for a breach of the Defence of the Realm Act.

RESUMO: O presente artigo percorre várias narrativas de exploradores da região do Putumayo (Amazônia) em diferentes momentos históricos, identificando uma série de elementos que se repetem em todas elas. Especificamente, encontramos a imagem da floresta como um submundo, em contraposição com a civilização, e a figura do explorador como uma espécie de herói que desce nele e cumpre um percurso transformador que o leva, eventualmente, à redenção ao voltar no mundo civilizado. Trata-se da epopeia da descida do homem branco no submundo da floresta. Além da floresta, no submundo o explorador vai encontrar aos índios "selvagens" que fazem parte integral dele, a partir do diálogo com estas figuras podem se entender vários mecanismos sobre a forma como o branco interpreta sua relação com a alteridade neste contexto específico. Mais precisamente, o texto propõe analisar a persistência de certas ideias preconcebidas sobre a floresta e seus habitantes, e como elas dificultam o diálogo entre os sujeitos envolvidos e influenciam a intepretação da realidade encontrada pelo explorador branco. ABSTRACT: This article treats several narratives of explorers of the Putumayo region (Amazonia) in different historical moments, identifying a series of elements that are common in all of them. Specifically, we have the image of the jungle as an underworld, in opposition to the civilization, and the figure of the explorer as a kind of hero who descends on it and fulfills a transformative journey that, eventually, leads him to the redemption by returning to the civilized world. It is the epic of the descent of the white man in the underworld of the jungle. In addition to the forest, the explorer will find in the underworld the "wild" Indians who are an integral part of it, from the encounter with these figures can be understood several mechanisms on how the white understands, in this specific context, its relationship with the otherness. *

Course Description: The 1990s witnessed the legitimization of what we now refer to as the biographical novel. Many prominent mid-twentieth century intellectuals critiqued and sometimes condemned this form of fiction, but by the 1990s, it had become so popular that it was no longer possible to ignore or disregard it. In this seminar, students will specifically read biographical novels from the 1930s through the present. There has been very little scholarship about the nature of the biographical novel. This is a great opportunity for you, as you can be one of the first to create a system of knowledge to make sense of this aesthetic form, and that is what we will do during the course of this semester.
