Roman legions

The paper is dedicated to a new beneficiary inscription from the Roman province of Dalmatia found in Kifino Selo, near Nevesinje in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republika Srpska). It is executed on the front of a limestone altar with a widened and profiled base. The upper part is modelled in a similar way with a triangular gable with floral decoration and lateral acroteriae. The dedication to Jupiter the Best and the Greatest was offered by a Roman consular beneficiary (beneficiarii consularis) at the time of his active military service in the Legion I Adiutrix. The altar was probably erected in a temple, shrine or at a beneficiary station near the Roman road leading from Nevesinjsko polje towards Narona and the Adriatic coast to the south or northwest, in the depths of the provincial territory. Based on the paleographic and stylistic features, the inscription can be dated to the end of 2nd and the 3rd century AD.

A Clausewitzian analysis of the Imperial Roman Army.

Using the Year of the Four Emperors (69 AD) as a case study, the Roman Army of the Principate is examined in its ability to live up to the standards laid down in Karl von Clausewitz's seminal military manual, 'On War'. This is done in an attempt to establish, as objectively as possible, whether the Roman Army lived up to its professional reputation.

Plumbata, mattiobarbula and martzobarboulon were the names of a javelin with a lead weight. It was a part of standard military equipment of Late Roman soldiers. Vegetius, Maurice and Anonymous Reformer describe the рlumbata as a throwing weapon with a range of throw superior to the javelin. Archaeological remains of plumbata looks like small barbed head on the iron stem and barrel shaped lead weight. Their length could vary from 98 mm to 275 mm long and weight from 130 gm to 350 gm. Modern reanactors reconstructed plumbata as a shot javelin with special way of usage. It was held in the tail and throw away by untwisting. Due to the good weight respecting to the small size, the energy consumption during the plumbata flight was smaller than that of the javellin. It helps to use the plumbata as the effective weapon of the first strike and explains Vegetius’s recommendations to this weapon as well.

The studies concerning the Roman army highlights mainly the training and organisation as defining elements for the success in battle. However, besides the training and organisation, there are other things that influence the soldier’s behavior in battle. The aim of this article is to emphasize that the soldiers’ morale, closely linked with training and organization, can make the difference on battlefield. There will be presented both the intimidation techniques used on battlefield and the elements that lead to strengthening morale.

Les pierres tombales des légionnaires romains du Haut-Empire et leurs inscriptions permettent de nous renseigner sur l'origine géographique des soldats, la troupe à laquelle ils appartenaient, leur âge ainsi que le nombre d'années de service. Eventuellement leurs grades successifs et évolutions de carrière.

  A travers l'exemple de la pierre tombale du légionnaire Caius Valerius Crispus, soldat de la  Légion VIII  Augusta, nous allons étudier l’extrême mobilité du légionnaire romain à travers un Empire aux dimensions considérables.

  Pourtant l'inscription saisie par le marteau du sculpteur est assez concise, 3 lignes seulement. Elle ne nous donne comme information géographique que le lieu de naissance de ce soldat,  Berta, lieu-dit de Macédoine. L'endroit de la découverte de la pierre tombale, quelque part sur la Kranz-platz de Wiesbaden (Allemagne-Land de Hesse), l'antique Aquae Mattiacorum, donne l'endroit approximatif du lieu de sépulture de ce soldat ; la pierre ayant probablement été ré-employée après l'époque romaine.

  Entre la Macédoine et l'Allemagne actuelles que de chemin parcouru ! Que de contrées traversées et d'expériences vécues ! L'inscription n'en dit pas un mot, encore moins les circonstances de la mort de ce soldat décédé à l'âge de 40 ans, après 21 années de service. Toutefois, la légion, elle, laisse des traces. Le récit des campagnes militaires s'est inscrit sous la plume des auteurs antiques, le passage des légions s'est insinué, parfois durablement, dans la pierre, sous forme de constructions civiles et militaires que les archéologues  redécouvrent. Ces bâtisseurs étaient des invétérés bavards puisqu'ils ne pouvaient s’empêcher de laisser l'empreinte de leur nom dans la pâte fraîche des tuiles mises à sécher avant cuisson…

  En récoltant, çà et là, les indices de son passage, nous allons pouvoir suivre, comme un jeu de piste, la carrière de Caius Valerius Crispus à travers l'Europe d'aujourd'hui. Pour rendre plus agréables, mais aussi plus concrets les paysages croisés dans cette dure vie, nous illustrerons d'une grande quantité de clichés, plans, dessins, cet essai. Issues d'ouvrages de vulgarisation scientifique, de rapports de fouilles, mais aussi d'expérimentations menées par l'association Légion VIII Augusta, ces illustrations permettront au curieux comme au passionné de mieux s'immerger, par des regards furtifs, dans le quotidien d'un légionnaire romain.

מאז הרפורמות של קאמילוס (Camillus) במאה ה-4 לפנה"ס, במשך כ-500 שנה סיפחה רומא תחת שליטתה עוד ועוד אזורים וארצות, עד לקבלת השליטה המלאה על כל הים התיכון. בשיא כוחה, נעו גבולות האימפריה הרומית מבריטניה, לים השחור, ועד צפון אפריקה. ללא ספק היו אלו ההצלחות הצבאיות הרבות אשר הביאו לרומא את ההגמוניה בים התיכון. מה אם כן היה סוד ההצלחה של הלגיונות? במחקר זה נבדוק את אמנות הקרב של הרומאים בתקופת הרפובליקה המאוחרת והאימפריה המוקדמת, וננסה לאפיין, עד כמה שניתן במסגרת מצומצמת זו, את הנקודות העיקריות של נושא זה. חשוב לזכור, כפי שנראה גם בהמשך, שלכל קרב היו את התכונות הייחודיות שלו, ולכן השימוש במילה "לאפיין" הינו בעייתי, אם כי בכל זאת ננסה להעניק מסגרת מוגדרת כלשהיא.
בפרק הראשון נציג את המסגרת של סוגי מבני הלחימה שהלגיונות הציבו לקראת כל קרב. הפרק השני הינו גרעין המחקר, בו נבדוק את דרך הלחימה של הלגיונר עצמו, הגורם החשוב ביותר על השלכות הקרב, וכן ננסה לבדוק את כלל ההתנהלות של מהלך העימות הפיזי. בפרק השלישי נבדוק את הגורמים הנוספים שנלחמו לצד הלגיונות בקרב, קרי חיל העזר והארטילריה. פרק זה מחולק ל-2 חלקים עיקריים: הדיון בפרשים והדיון ברגליים. הפרק יראה שלחילות הללו, ברוב המקרים, לא הייתה חשיבות רבה על הכרעת הקרב, למעט קרבות בעלי בעייתיות טופוגרפית וההצלחות בעקיפה ותקיפת אגפי האויב. גם הפרק הרביעי, המוקדש לפיקוד הלגיונות, יחולק ל-2 חלקים: הדרך בה הגנרל שלט על הנעשה בצבאו במהלך הקרב והעביר את פקודותיו, וכן דיון על חשיבותו של הגנרל עצמו בצבאות הרומיים.

Entre 260 et 363, les Romains développèrent des éléments de distinction pour construire leur identité face à un Autre appelé Barbare. Bien qu'officiellement opposé à la romanité, le Barbare pouvait y entrer en étant recruté dans l'armée romaine selon différentes modalités dépendant des conditions de sa rencontre avec l'Empire. De ce recrutement des Barbares naquit la notion de barbarisation. Se manifestant dans divers champs d'opérablilité, la barbarisation de l'armée romaine tardive fut un phénomène pluriel et inégal en fonction du champ étudié.

Fragments of a huge inscribed bronze tabula are presented here, which can be dated to the end of the year AD 14. The document contained regulations regarding the privileges of soldiers and veterans as well as the financing of the latter. These regulations were made after the mutinies of legions at the Rhine and Danube frontiers, which started after the death of Augustus.

En la residencia palatina, el soberano del más grande imperio occidental ni siquiera se permite pasear por sus jardines sin ser vigilado.  El poder genera ambición por ocuparlo, y no había mayor poder en la Antigüedad que el emperador. Las campañas fronterizas contra los germanos o los partos suponen un peligro adicional. Nunca sus enemigos extranjeros tendrán otra oportunidad como esa para tratar de acabar con su vida. En realidad, no existía un lugar totalmente seguro. Los pretorianos surgieron con una única y difícil misión, proteger su vida y la de su familia allí donde se encontraran.

Estrictamente escogidos entre los mejores soldados de todo el imperio. Entrenados diariamente para cumplir su cometido. Miles de soldados de elite estaban las órdenes de la casa imperial, acuartelados en el Castra Preatoria. Los pretorianos surgieron como unidad militar el 27 a.C. y se mantuvieron en su puesto hasta el 312 d.C., más de tres siglos de Historia donde compartirían funciones con los guardias germanos y los más expertos jinetes de la guardia real antes de que Constantino dictara su disolución. Ningún soberano fue tan audaz como para presentarse en combate sin tenerlos cerca. Si sus oponentes amenazaban con obtener la victoria ese era el momento para que actuaran mientras el resto de soldados contemplaban como conseguían cambiar el destino de la batalla hasta destruir a sus enemigos. Su preparación era la mejor, sus medios ilimitados y su capacidad no tenía igual. No existían soldados más diestros entre las tropas romanas.

Criticados por los autores clásicos, odiados por el pueblo, temidos por el Senado y envidiados por el resto del ejercito legionario, su actuación estuvo marcada por el heroísmo y la traición. Su poder creció hasta convertirse en la llave de la política Roma y no tardaron en aprovecharse de ello. A lo largo de sus tres siglos de historia en la época imperial romana, la función principal de la Guardia Pretoriana fue la protección de la figura del emperador allí donde este se encontrara, ya fuera actuando permanentemente como su escolta y guardia personal  en el palacio imperial o como última línea de defensa en el ámbito militar. Pero como cuerpo de élite del ejército romano acantonado en la capital del Imperio también se les encomendó el mantenimiento y, en su caso, restablecimiento del orden allí donde fuera necesario. Así, la Guardia Pretoriana se conformaría como una de las piezas clave en la historia imperial romana como uno de los actores principales no solo a nivel militar sino también a nivel político, papel este último muy alejado de las funciones iniciales para las que fue creada pero que poco a poco fue cobrando especial relevancia tanto por su cercanía a la figura de los sucesivos emperadores como por su acantonamiento en la capital imperial. Consciente de su poder, no fueron pocas las ocasiones en que los pretorianos utilizaron su posición e influencias para dirigir y aprovechar los habituales cambios políticos en la cúspide del poder . Pero, aun siendo menos conocida, no sería menor la importancia bélica que en los campos de batalla protagonizarían los pretorianos en numerosas ocasiones como unidad militar y que a la postre les consagraría como uno de los pilares fundamentales del régimen imperial prácticamente desde su creación, en tiempos de Augusto , hasta su desmantelamiento llevado a cabo por el emperador Majencio.
Como cuerpo de élite del ejército, reconocidos como los mejor entrenados y preparados como demostraron en no pocas ocasiones, y en base a su especial misión recibían una paga superior al del resto de soldados; y su tiempo de servicio era varios años menor, por lo que resultaban ser la envidia del resto de unidades militares y en particular de aquellos que servían en el limes del imperio . Es por ello que trataremos aquí de realizar un estudio esquemático sobre su formación, estructura, actuaciones, etc. con el fin de ahondar en el conocimiento de esta institución muchas veces denostada por algunas de sus intervenciones.

This is a reference guide to Roman legionary fortresses throughout the former Roman Empire, of which approximately eighty-five have been located and identified. With the expansion of the Empire and the garrisoning of its army in frontier regions during the 1st century AD, Rome began to concentrate its legions in large permanent bases. Some have been explored in great detail, others are barely known, but this book brings together for the first time the legionary fortresses of the whole empire. An introductory section outlines the history of legionary bases and their key components. At the heart of the book is a referenced and illustrated catalogue of the known bases, each with a specially prepared plan. A detailed bibliography provides up-to-date publication information. The book is accompanied by a website providing online links to sites relevant to particular fortresses and aerial views of all of the known fortress locations.

Le rôle joué par l'armée romaine sur le territoire de la Lorraine actuelle a été longtemps sous-estimé. De nombreuses sources historiques, épigraphiques et surtout archéologiques témoignent pourtant de la présence des légions et de leurs auxiliaires depuis la guerre des Gaules jusque dans la première moitié du Ve siècle ap. J.-C.

Die Rolle, die der römischen Armee auf dem Territorium des heutigen Lothringen spielte war lange Zeit unterschätzt, obwohl viele historische, epigraphische und archäologische Quellen die Präsenz der Legionen und ihre Hilfstruppen seit dem Gallischen Krieg bis in der ersten Hälfte des fünften Jahrhunderts nach Christus bezeugen.

Die Auswertung der Altgrabungen im Bereich einer Ziegelei in der Flur Liebrüti östlich von Kaiseraugst (AG, Schweiz) hat ergeben, dass dort die Ziegel der Legio I Martia bereits Anfang des 4. Jahrhunderts verbaut waren und wohl auch produziert wurden. Manche Öfen brannten bis ans Ende des 4. Jahrhunderts ungestempelte Ziegel aus dem gleichen Ton; diese spätesten Produkte sind der Legion aber nicht sicher zuzuweisen. Die Verbreitungskarte zeigt, dass primär für die Provinz Sequania produziert wurde. Der leistungsfähige Vertrieb entlang der Reichsgrenze erfolgte auf dem Ober- und Hochrhein; ins Hinterland wurde teils über Land geliefert. Auch gleichzeitige zivile Produzenten (Amasonius) lieferten unüblich weit.
An analysis of old excavations in the Liebrüti brickyards east of Kaiseraugst, attributed to the Legio I Martia, shows that although the first tiles bearing its stamps were available at the beginning of the fourth century, production of unstamped tiles continued until late in the fourth century. These latest products,
however, cannot be safely attributed to the legion. The geographic distribution shows a production destined to the Sequania province, the efficient distribution along the border relying mainly on the Rhine waterway, while the hinterland
was supplied overland. Contemporary civilian brickmakers (Amasonius) also delivered over unusually long distances.

This dissertation examines the military and social roles of centurions in the Roman legions during the Republic and Principate.  It combines textual accounts of centurions from such authors as Caesar, Tacitus, and Cassius Dio, as well as epigraphic and archaeological evidence for centurions themselves, including funerary monuments, dedicatory inscriptions, and the physical remains of legionary camps.  I evaluate this evidence, moreover, with reference to contemporary military and critical social theory (which integrates concepts of civil-military relations, performance, and symbolic systems), considering the centurion not only in the context of the Roman legions, but in broader Mediterranean warfare and society.

I argue that centurions were at once the linchpin of the legions’ social and military, hierarchy and the chief representatives of the Roman Emperor’s power at the periphery of the empire. By showing the critical functions of the intermediate members of Rome’s legions, this research challenges scholarship that assumes the supremacy of elite military and political values in shaping Roman attitudes towards warfare and imperialism. I show, moreover, that military authority in the Roman army was often quite fluid, and I identify various contexts in which it was disputed or redefined.

The dissertation is organized into six chapters.  The first chapter describes the centurion’s disciplinary role in the Roman army.  Centurions were responsible for both discipline and punishment in the legions, and by analyzing their reputation for severity, I reassert the significance of corporal punishment in developing Roman military culture.  Chapter Two investigates the centurion’s idealized behaviour in warfare, and how it affected views towards leadership and personal authority in the Roman legions.  The third chapter demonstrates how these seemingly contrasting ideals of severe discipline and outrageous aggressiveness in combat were complementary rather than contradictory practices in Roman attitudes towards warfare, and that this perceived balance was crucial to the development of the legion’s ranks and organization during the Principate.

Chapter Four evaluates legionary centurions’ rank and social status in the legions, including their career paths, military expertise, and training.  Using papyrological and epigraphic evidence in particular, I show how centurions identified themselves as part of a corporate body, distinct from both the rank-and-file and aristocratic leadership.  The fifth chapter explains their intermediate position in the legion’s social hierarchy between soldiers and aristocratic commanders, and how this position was important to integrating new soldiers into the Roman military community.  Finally, Chapter Six assesses the political and administrative roles of centurions in imperial administration, arguing that they were the chief representation of Roman power among local populations at the periphery of Rome’s empire.

In organizing the chapters according to the centurions’ various statuses and functions (e.g., combat, institutional discipline, camp management, diplomacy, regional administration), the dissertation concomitantly traces the social, political, and institutional development of the centurionate from Republic to Principate, including its cultural representations.  I demonstrate that although the centurions’ traditional role on the battlefield increasingly gave way to more bureaucratic duties, they conversely became more emblematic of Roman martial traditions in their vestments, equipment, and cultural image – a military anachronism, and reflective of a broader trend in which the vestiges of an idealized Republican army endured in the professional legions of the later Principate.  This dissertation, therefore explores not only the functions, but the identity and self-image of these officers.

This dissertation contributes to scholarship in two fundamental ways.  Primarily, it is the first study that combines and analyzes such a broad array of textual, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence for centurions, including duties, characterizations, and expectations. In doing so, the dissertation offers the first comprehensive, scholarly study of legionary centurions in the Roman Empire. Second, the dissertation demonstrates that this analysis of Roman intermediate ranks and social positions is crucial to understanding how attitudes towards discipline, violence, masculinity, and personal authority were manifested both within the Roman military community and throughout the Roman Empire.

Souvent qualifiée de « célèbre » ou de « fameuse », cette unité est sans doute la moins bien connue des légions césariennes.

Au détour d'une phrase de sa biographie de César, Suétone nous apprend qu'il a formé à ses frais une légion appelée Alauda (Alouette). Ses soldats étaient des pérégrins issus de Transalpine, qui n’ont reçu la citoyenneté romaine que bien après leur enrôlement. Comme aucune autre source  n’en parle jamais, à commencer par César lui-même, cette légion atypique a fait l’objet de nombreuses  hypothèses. En s’appuyant sur des sources épigraphiques d’époque impériale, on a ainsi supposé qu’elle devait correspondre à la Legio V mobilisée par César dans sa campagne africaine.

Un réexamen des sources permet toutefois de remettre en cause la pertinence de cette identification. Tandis qu’aucun élément ne permet d’affirmer qu’il a existé une Legio V Alaudae du vivant de César, un faisceau d’indices fait clairement pencher la balance en faveur d'une origine hispanique de la Legio V du Bellum Africum. Il y a en réalité de fortes chances pour que la « légion » gauloise évoquée par Suétone n'ait jamais été considérée comme une légion régulière de l'armée romaine.

La deuxième partie de ce travail de recherche s’efforce de comprendre qui étaient les soldats d’Antoine désignés par le terme « Alaudae » dans plusieurs textes de Cicéron. La façon dont cet auteur s’y prend pour critiquer leur accession à la troisième décurie judiciaire, sous l’impulsion d’Antoine, permet de déduire qu’il s’agissait sans doute de soldats d’origine italienne et non de Transalpins fraîchement promus citoyens. La  Legio V Alaudae pourrait avoir été créée par le triumvir, mais après les événements de 44 et 43 av. J.-C.

La troisième partie de cette étude se penche sur l’épineuse question des Legiones Quintae qui ont existé dans la période charnière entre République et Empire. Les données épigraphiques nous permettent de savoir qu’elles ont été associées à différents surnoms : Alaudae, Gallica, Macedonica et Urbana. Cette ultime partie s’intéresse ensuite plus particulièrement à la Ve légion impériale qui fut stationnée en Hispanie puis en Germanie, dont les sources semblent indiquer qu’elle n’a véritablement porté le nom de Legio V Alaudae qu’à partir du règne de Claude.

Five monuments discovered so far at Novae have venerated Liber Pater and Dionysus. In one of his recent publications, Professor Tadeusz Sarnowski presented the opinion that the numerous dedications to this deity discovered at Novae may be evidence of local wine production.  This assumption is not without grounds. Nevertheless, a broader view of the Bacchic cult, both in the chronological and territorial extent, may be of some help for future investigations.

מאז תחילת הלחימה המאורגנת בעידן שלאחר תחילת התיעוד ההיסטורי, אף אחד מהארגונים הצבאיים לא היו כה דומיננטי בעת העתיקה כמו הפלנקס היווני/מקדוני והלגיון הרומי. הפלנקס היווני הצליח לבלום את הפלישה הפרסית לאירופה, והפלנקס המקדוני, בראשותם של פיליפ ה-2 ואלכסנדר הגדול, השתלט על הבלקן וכן כבש את המזרח והאימפריה הפרסית, ואף הגיע עד לאזורים של הודו ואפגניסטן. הלגיון הרומי, מצידו, עד לתקופת המלחמות המקדוניות, הצליח להשתלט על כל איטליה, סרדניה, סיציליה, חלק גדול מספרד, ואזורים בדרום גאליה וצפון אפריקה, ובהמשך ההיסטוריה הרומית השתלט על כל הים התיכון. אין ספק שהמפגש בין שתי שיטות הלחימה המצליחות ביותר של העת העתיקה אמור להוות נושא מרתק לחוקרי הטקטיקה הצבאית ולקלאסייקאים כאחד. כיצד קרה שדווקא הלגיון ניצח והביא את רומא להיות המעצמה הגדולה ביותר במערב? כיצד סדרה של קרבות הכריזה על עליונותו של הלגיון, ובכך גם על הכוח הצבאי החזק והמצליח ביותר שראה העולם העתיק? במאמר זה אנו נעבור בצורה דקדקנית על העדויות השונות של העימותים בין שני הצדדים ונבחן מבחינה טקטית את כל הקרבות שבין שני הצדדים.
נושא זה מעניין גם מכיוון שלשתי שיטות הלחימה היה מקור זהה. הפלנקס הופיע ביוון במאות ה-8 או ה-7 לפנה"ס לאחר עידן הלחימה ההומרית, אשר הייתה מאופיינת בלחימה יותר מפוזרת, דו-קרבות, ואולי גם שימוש מסוים במרכבות. עדות למבנה כזה קיימת מהמזרח עוד מהאלף ה-3 לפנה"ס, על מצבת אבן הגיר המפורסמת המוכרת כ-"מצבת הנשרים" ("Stele of the Vultures"), אשר מראה צבא שוּמרי במבנה פלנקס ברור . בין אם היוונים אימצו שיטה זו כחלק מההשפעות המזרחיות של התקופה האוריינטלית או בין אם הייתה זו התפתחות מקומית והדמיון נובע מכך שהייתה זו הדרך הטובה ביותר להלחם במבנה מוגן ומאורגן, הפלנקס הפך במהרה לכוח המשמעותי ביותר של היוונים, וההופליטים הפכו לחיילים ושכירי החרב האיכותיים ביותר של התקופה. הצלחת הפלנקס הביאה לאימוצו בידי עמים אחרים כגון האטרוסקים, וכן הרומאים עצמם במאה ה-6 לפנה"ס. לרוע המזל, ההיסטוריה לא השאירה עדויות לעימות בין הלגיונות של הרפובליקה התיכונה לפלנקס היווני הקלאסי, אך קיימות עדויות, אותן נבחן בהמשך, ללחימה של הלגיונות בפלנקס המקדוני/הלניסטי. מעניין הוא שהן הרומאים והן המקדונים שינו את צורת לחימתם הקודמת המאופיינת בפלנקס הקלאסי לאחר כישלונות, אך שניהם בהחלט ביססו את שיטותיהם החדשות על מבנה הפלנקס: הרומאים הצליחו, בעזרת שיטת הפלנקס, לכבוש חלקים גדולים של איטליה, בעיקר מהאטרוסקים, אך שיטה זו לא הייתה מספיק טובה על מנת לבלום את הפלישה הגאלית בתחילת המאה ה-4. בעקבות הפלישה באו הרפורמות הרומיות המשויכות לקאמילוס (Camillus), אם כי ייתכן ואלו כללו גם לאטינים אחרים, ובעקבות זאת שיטת הפלנקס נעלמה, ובמקומה הוקם הלגיון המניפולרי (Liv. 8.8). עם זאת, נראה שהרומאים בכל זאת עדיין לא סמכו לחלוטין על השיטה החדשה, והשורה האחרונה של המניפולות, הטריירי, עדיין נלחמה בצורה שהזכירה יותר את הפלנקס, דבר שנמשך מעבר למלחמות המקדוניות ועד סוף המאה ה-2 לפנה"ס. בכל מקרה, אין ספק שמבנה מאורגן זה היה התפתחות ישרה של הפלנקס, ולמרות שאין זה המקום להרחיב על כך, ניתן לומר שללגיון היו מאפיינים דומים רבים למבנה הקודם. גם הפלנקס המקדוני, כאמור, התפתח מהפלנקס הקלאסי, אך למקדונים לא היה מרחב פעולה רב לרפורמות. התבוסה הקשה לאילירים ב-359 והמחסור בכספים אשר לא אפשר לרכוש שכירי חרב לא השאירו לפיליפ ה-2, המלך החדש, הרבה ברירות – לייצר צבא מצליח או להיכבש. כמובן שבתקופה זו מבנים עמוקים היו כבר דבר מוכר (Xen. Hell. 6.4.12), ופיליפ אף למד על שיטות לחימה עדכניות מאפמינונדס (Epaminondas) עצמו בזמן שישב בשבי בתבאי (Dio Chrys. Or. 49.5), וכן הכיר את הגנרל האתונאי איפקרטס (Iphicrates), אשר השתמש בחניתות ארוכות ומגנים קטנים (Nep. Iph. 1,3); אולם, הפלנקס המקדוני שיצר מהצורך המיידי היה בהחלט דבר חדש ויוצא דופן. כך, היותו של פלנקס זה התפתחות ישירה של הפלנקס היווני מראה לנו, כפי שצוין, שהקרבות בין הצבאות הרומיים וההלניסטיים היו מבוססים על שיטות לחימה שהתפתחו ממקור זהה.

En el año 750 a.C Rómulo, primer rey de Roma, creó las primeras legiones al dividir a los ciudadanos entre hombres fuertes y los no aptos para el combate. Así pues vemos como desde la fundación de Roma el aspecto militar ha tenido un aspecto importante para el desarrollo de su civilización.
El presente documento se realizó como un ejercicio comprensivo con la finalidad del entendimiento de la cultura romana a través de uno de sus lentes, el militar.

The present study aims at clarifying the morphological attributes, functionality, and circumstances of discovery regarding a unique ceramic type identified in the surrounding area of Napoca, as well as within the legionary fortress and the canabae at Potaissa. Only four such vessels
are known in Roman Dacia so far, and the majority of them come from Potaissa. Based on all their physical characteristics, but especially their handles, the vessels can be classed as “three‑handled wine jugs”, reminiscent of volute kraters.

In this paper we present a study on the figure of women in a space so characteristic of the Roman world as are military camps. Although the historiographical tradition has treated the issue of the quartering of the legionaries as places where these soldiers lived, in the last decades, thanks to the performance of archaeological interventions, it has been possible to document objects of a feminine nature that allow us to propose new lines of research on the approaches so far established. The methodology used is based on a study of literary and archaeological sources, since its analysis will help us to understand and delimit the role and relevance that the female gender could have in the Roman warlike contingent.

The survey of the Legio area, conducted on behalf of Tel
Aviv University in 1998-2000, recovered numerous finds
related to settlement sites in the region, and enabled us to
suggest the locations of a Jewish village, a Roman
military camp and a Roman-Byzantine city in a welldefined
geographical area, characterized by an abundant
water source throughout the year and an important road
junction in the northern Land of Israel. The paper
presents the finds of the survey, focusing on the Roman
military camp at Legio. The location of the camp was
detennined with the assistance of the survey finds and
analysis of the routes of Roman roads and aqueducts, and
tl1e distribution of cremation burials. The size of the camp
was ascertained on the basis of old maps, aerial
photographs and the ceramic finds of the survey. The
paper takes into account the results of other surveys and
excavations conducted in the area and the discovery of
roof tiles with stamps of the legions stationed at the camp
site. The smmnary presents preliminary conclusions,
within the limitations of the study, relating to the Roman
military presence at Legio.

The study of the Roman army’s integration in the provincial system is a difficult terrain to deal with. The first, obvious, limit concerns how the different civilizations reacted to assimilation into the Roman influence: The Romanization process was either embraced or imposed after the subjugation, causing different social responses depending on the cultural features of the defeated.
Given these differences, it is important to deliberate on what role the Roman army had in the integration process of the Egyptian province. In fact, Roman soldiers represented the first embodiment of Roman culture outside the Italian peninsula, the first element the local population came in contact with in the aftermath of the conquest. Given this, it is interesting to investigate whether the legionaries were aware of their cultural ‘task’, or if they were only acting as the military representation of the occupying power.
The cultural effects of this research are evident: the examination of the Roman perception by the local population has, in fact, ambivalent implications. Firstly, it requires a deep analysis of Roman ideology, namely how Roman elite justified their domination over so many different civilizations. Such a concept is nowadays defined as Roman Imperialism. This aspect can be extrapolated from ancient authors’ testimonies, though we need to keep in mind that the concept of Imperialism has modern, post-capitalist origins, and cannot be semantically detected in the Greco-Latin world. Once the Roman mind-set has been analysed, it is necessary to switch to the local population. The second part of our investigation will therefore be conducted by collecting a series of selected evidence ranging from epigraphic data to papyri. The common denominator of such sources is the perspective on everyday life that connected soldiers and civilians. The final aim is to present, with reasonable precision, how the scenario of reciprocal interactions formed the image of the Roman soldier deployed in the provinces.

"This article explores two questions about the tactical mechanics of the Roman manipular legion. Firstly, what frontages did the Roman legion field in set-piece battle? Given that Hellenistic forces deployed in standardized formations, the length of Hellenistic infantry lines can be used to calculate the opposing Roman formation. This in turn permits consideration of the nature and tactical function of the gaps between the maniples.
The paper deduces that Roman legions presented fronts between 320 and 570 meters in five set-piece battles. The range of frontages suggests that modest inter-manipular gaps were maintained even when the heavy infantry lines clashed."

The study is divided into four chapters and it is based on the analysis of literary, epigraphical and archaeological sources which testify to the presence of Roman military units in the Dalmatian area from the reigns of Augustus to Hadrian. The first chapter deals with the historical development of Roman garrison in Dalmatia, and it is primarily based on the study of literary and epigraphical sources which provide the basis for the reconstruction of the military, and—consequently—the administrative history of Dalmatia during the mentioned period. Special attention is devoted to the subject of the Pannonian War of Tiberius, the Illyrican War of AD 6–9, the question of the division of Illyricum, as well as the Tiberius’ inscriptions on road construction.
The pivotal part (the second and the third chapter) is devoted to the military units; that is, to the legionary and auxiliary units that have left a trace on the Dalmatian soil. The discussion in these chapters is mostly based on the analysis of the epigraphical sources. Both of the chapters are set in the way in which the first part deals with the history of military units, while the second part is dedicated to the analysis of different elements of the inscriptions of Roman soldiers (origin of soldiers, hierarchy, years lived and served in the army, soldiers’ nomenclature, and so on). Both chapters contain thorough catalogues which include the reading of all inscriptions of Roman soldiers and Roman military units in Dalmatia, dated to the period from Augustus to Hadrian.
The fourth chapter handles the military strongholds which were occupied by the mentioned units. It is primarily based on the study of aerial photographs and satellite images, but also—in a smaller degree—on the data provided by the archaeological excavations. Three garrisons in the hinterland of coastal colonies are especially separated: (1) Burnum and the garrison on the Liburnian frontier; (2) Tilurium and the garrison in the hinterland of Salona; and (3) the garrison in the hinterland of Narona.

This article is the first systematic attempt for collection and arrangement of the early Roman coin finds from Novae – a large legionary fortress on the Lower Danube excavated without interruption since 1960. It contains a complete identification of all published coins from the site excavations as well as a thorough check of inventory books in Svishtov Museum. No less than 252 coins (total 407 with the suburbia finds) of the Early Principate period (Augustus to Trajan) are catalogued and further analysed. A small hoard of six Claudian and Neronian aes-coins (down to AD 64/5) found in the street sewage by the legion’s Principia is also discussed. A comparative analysis of coin denominations which occur at Novae is applied. Of particular value for the current analysis is the chronological overlapping of small finds (terra sigillata from North Italy and Gaul, imported glass, amphorae, etc.) associated with the Julio-Claudian and Flavian coins excavated in sectors X, XI and XVIII. Paper provides insight for the early phases of habitation and emphasizes on the purely military character of Novae until Hadrian.

Görev yaptıkları bölgelerin güvenliğinden sorumlu olan Roma lejyonları, aynı zamanda bu bölgelerdeki imar faaliyetlerini de yürütmüşlerdir. MS 1. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren imparatorluğun doğu sınırı olarak kabul edilen Fırat (Euphrates) Nehri’nin batısında konuşlanan lejyonlar da öncelikle askeri yollar ve nehrin kolları üzerine köprüler inşa etmişlerdir. İnşa yazıtlarına ve tespit edilebilen buluntulara göre, İmparatorluk Dönemi’nde bölgede lejyon tarafından inşa edilmiş üç köprü bulunmaktadır. Bu köprüler yol ağının
kesintisiz biçimde devam edebilmesini sağlamıştır. Köprülerin bulundukları yol güzergahları, mimari üslupları ve inşa malzemeleri, imparatorluğun askeri hareketliliğinin ve doğu sınır politikasının anlaşılması için önemlidir. / The Roman legions, who were responsible for the security of the regions they served, also carried out construction activities in these regions. From the second half of the 1st century AD the legions stationed to the west of the Euphrates River, which was accepted as the eastern border of the Empire, primarily built military roads and bridges over the branches of the river. According to the construction inscriptions and the finds that can be identified, there were three legion-built bridges in the region during the Imperial Period. These bridges ensured that the road network could continue without intervention. The road routes, architectural styles and construction materials of the bridges are important for understanding the military mobility and eastern border policy of the Empire.

A lo largo de su historia el Imperio romano tuvo que hacer frente a numerosas revueltas, debido al enorme territorio que controlaba. De entre los pueblos que las protagonizaron, los hebreos se contaban entre los que con mayor insistencia lucharon por recuperar su independencia. En cuanto a los diversos conflictos que enfrentaron a judíos y romanos, la que, a la postre, seria recordada como la Primera Guerra Judeo-romana (66-73 d.C.) pasó a la historia como el más importante de todos. Ello se debe tanto a que requirió de la participación de dos futuros emperadores al mando de las tropas romanas que debían restablecer la paz en la provincia de Judea, Vespasiano y su hijo Tito, como al hecho de que la ciudad de Jerusalén y el Gran Templo que albergaba acabaron completamente destruidos.

En el año 66 d.C. numerosos factores se unieron al odio que sectores radicales hebreos sentían hacia sus conquistadores romanos, provocando la caída del procurador de Judea, Gesio Floro, y la derrota del Legado de Siria, Cestio Galo, en Beth Horón, quien acudió con sus tropas a pacificar la región sin conseguirlo. El movimiento fue cobrando fuerza tras estos éxitos, y Jerusalén se convirtió en el epicentro del independentismo judío. Roma no podía permanecer pasiva ante estos acontecimientos y Nerón envió allí a Vespasiano, un general experimentado, para acabar de una vez por todas con el problema. La resistencia implacable que demostraron los rebeldes y los problemas políticos que, durante ese tiempo, se produjeron en Roma, provocaron que la conquista final quedara en manos de su capaz hijo Tito quien, a la postre, consiguió conquistar Jerusalén y acabar con la revuelta. El gran triunfo que se celebró en Roma para conmemorar la victoria era lo que la nueva dinastía Flavia necesitaba para afianzar su poder. Sin embargo, la campaña no finalizó hasta el año 73 d.C., tras la toma de la fortaleza de Masada, donde los últimos insurrectos prefirieron suicidarse antes de ser derrotados. El enfrentamiento se saldaría con una enorme pérdida de vidas, tanto entre los soldados romanos como entre los insurrectos judíos y la población civil. Gracias a la obra de Flavio Josefo, podemos reconstruir lo sucedido para poder así conocer con detalle uno de los grandes episodios de la Historia Antigua.

Camp F at Masada, southern Judea, is part of the siege works constructed by the Roman Army against the Jewish rebels during the Jewish Revolt. It is divided into two areas and chronological stages: the larger outer Camp F1, is dated to the time of the siege against Masada, until its fall in 73/4 AD and the inner Camp F2, is dated between 106 and 113 AD or even later in 115–117 AD. A group of luxury and common mostly drinking vessels were discovered in the 1995 Excavations in Camp F at Masada, concentrated in several units that probably served as the senior officers living quarters and headquarters, and the common soldiers dwellings. Their analysis will be used to study cultural and social implications as a reflection of the personal drinking habits of high ranked commanders and legionaries of the Roman army.

şi în contextul provinciei Moesia Secunda.

Table ronde proposée en partenariat par le groupe Guerres, Espaces et Représentations (GER – Bordeaux Montaigne), le Groupe de Recherche en Histoire de la Guerre (GRHG – UQAM) et la Revue des Études Anciennes

Depuis le milieu du xxe siècle, l’histoire de la guerre a connu de profonds renouvellements. L’historiographie de l’Antiquité n’a pas été laissée de côté par ce mouvement caractérisé par un retour de l’événement et de l’acteur, ainsi que par une ouverture, sans cesse accrue, de l’histoire de la guerre aux méthodes et aux notions d’autres historiographies et disciplines. Les conflits, leurs acteurs, tout comme les façons dont les sociétés antiques s’organisent pour la guerre et les manières de combattre ont fait l’objet de nouveaux examens renouvelant parfois considérablement notre compréhension de la guerre dans les contextes antiques. Et on assiste aujourd’hui à une multiplication sans précédent des études et des travaux qui s’inscrivent dans ce champ de recherche. Cette table ronde propose de revenir tant sur les expériences déjà menées et les débats en cours, que sur les méthodes, les concepts et leurs circulations au sein du champ de l’histoire et entre disciplines pour comprendre comment ils ont permis de faire évoluer notre regard sur la guerre antique et d’ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives dans l’étude du fait guerrier.

In this paper we address an exceptional papyrus, PSI IX 1026, unique because of its contents, as it reflects the transfer of non-citizen soldiers from the Misene fleet to the legion X Fretensis, and mentions the deliverance from their sacramentum.
