The primary objectives of this paper are to cover the historiography of three areas concerning Siberia after the Revolution of 1905 through the Russian Civil War:  first, the Siberian migration under the Stolypin agrarian plan after the Revolution of 1905; secondly, Siberia as a place where both political and administrative exiles were sent prior to the Provisional Government releasing those in exile; finally, the impact of the Czechoslovak Legion’s alliance with Aleksandr Kolchak and his White Army in the Russian Civil War.

Blue Depths, Andrey Platonov's Russian Revolution poems, were written between 1914 and 22. While full of youthful passion, they are not his best writing, but they show where this master of Russian fiction, his greater poetry, got his start. The philologist Alexsey Varlamov best summarizes the importance of this poetry collection:

“Platonov the poet has remained less famous than Platonov the novelist or playwright. Partially assembled in the first and only poetic collection of the author’s, Blue Depths (1922), early Platonovic lyrics, for all their sincerity, spontaneity, openness and confidence of intonation, amaze with their ‘non-Platonovisms’ — that is, their sleekness, skill, initial sophistication, and yet, at the same time, their inevitable secondhandedness and imitation of [Alexsey] Koltsov, [Ivan] Nikitin, [Afanasy] Fet, [Nikolay] Nekrasov, [Valery] Bryusov, [Alexander] Block… There is no way to speak of them in the words of Andrey Bitov about Platonov’s prose — ‘He started at zero.’ In contrast to the crude, unusual, original and primordial Platonovic style, which immediately manifests itself in his prose, Platonov the poet seems to be an excellent student of literary studies, who conscientiously learned classical Russian versification. Sometimes this apprenticeship is replaced by mastery (amazing for a young man of 19-20 years), as for example, in the poem ‘Steppe’ with its detailed and accurate picture of this space that later became the scene of action in Chevengur” (Andrey Platonov, Thé Life of Wonderful People. Steppe

At the confluence of sky and earth
is a blue undulating range.
Murky before its veil is
the calm leveling steppe.

Along the ridge noiseless winds
roll wave after wave,
beneath them sands in file
course — and through the grasses seethe.

Varlamov goes on to say the following: “Over the years, Andrey Platonov’s lyrics have become more complex, saturated with various meanings. In them are intricately entwined the aesthetics of the proletariat and the avant-garde, very accurately described by [V. Alexandrov] Keller in the article ‘Andrey Platonov’ published in 1922 in the magazine Dawnings: ‘For everything he is theirs, close. So you will not understand whether he came out of these leaves of grass, or they came out of him. The blue depths of the world are open to him and open in him, to those who can see <...> Whether he will achieve wide fame, I do not know. Certainly, he will not shove inside the literary shops of St. Petersburg and Moscow and shout about himself. And not doing so is impossible these days. But those who need Platonov will find their way to him. And many need him’ ” (p. 20).

In the end, Platonov’s poems draw on and fuel the capacity of the times: the transitioning from the old Russia to the newly freed nation full of youthful hope.

Th e publication focuses on the role and place of the Russian emigration between the two wars in the Harmanli region. Th is is a little-known page in the history of this region. A handful of articles that indirectly address the issue of white immigration in Harmanli are known. In the 1920s,
a Russian military school and a mixed secondary school were located in Harmanli District. A Russian General commited suicide in Harmanli, and his compatriot managed to protect BGN 5 million from Mityo Ganev’s gang. For decades Dr. Alexei Uspensky had been treating for fr ee the residents of the village of Elena, located in the Harmanli region. White-immigrant offi cers were among the fi rst players at Harmanli Sokol Football Club. One of them – Friedrich Klüd even reached the national team of Bulgaria. Th e publication covers those and other events of the life of Russian emigration in Harmanli between the two world wars in an attempt to draw a line between facts and legends.

17. yüzyıl boyunca yapacakları savaşlara finansman sağlamak için teker teker borç batağına saplanan Avrupalı monarşiler gibi Osmanlı ve Rus monarşileri de 18. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren sermayedar savaş baronlarının pençesine düşmüşlerdi.  Kafkasya, amansız birer rakip hâline getirilen bu iki imparatorluğun savaş arenalarının başında geliyordu. 19. yüzyılın sonu ve 20. yüzyılın başları arasındaki bir asırlık sürede Kafkasya Dağlıları, başkalarının savaşlarının kurbanları olmuş, sürekli değişen dengeler içinde kâh stratejik ittifaklar kurarak, kâh savaşarak özgürlük ve bağımsızlıklarını korumaya çalışmışlardı.  Bu süre zarfında istisnasız her nesli toplu sürgünler ve soykırımlara uğrayan Kafkasya halkları vatanlarını savunmak için mücadele ederlerken kendi istemleri dışında başka güçlerin savaşlarının da baş aktörleri hâline gelmişlerdi.  En az dış güçlere karşı verdikleri mücadeleler kadar birbirlerine karşı da savaşmak zorunda bırakılan bu halklar, insanlık tarihinin en trajik hikayelerinden birisinin konusu olmuşlardı.
Cem Kumuk, Kafkasya Dağlılarının yaşadıkları tecrübelerin önemli kilometre taşlarını bu paylaşım mücadelesinde yer alan ülkelerin arşivlerinden derlediği ve daha önce hiç yayınlanmamış pek çok belgeyle okurların ilgisine sunuyor.  Çalışmasını özellikle ideolojik kaygılar ve kaynak eksikliği yüzünden üzerinde yeterince çalışılamamış olan ihtilaller ve dünya savaşları dönemi üzerinde derinleştiren Kumuk, bu döneme dair ezberlenmiş “doğruları” değiştirecek belgeler ortaya koyuyor.  Kafkasya Dağlılarının son iki asırlık tarihine eleştirel bir bakış açısıyla yaklaşan Kumuk’un bu çalışması, Kafkasya Tarihi okurları için yeni bir kilometre taşı hâline gelecek.

В статье рассматривается вопрос о наградной системе антибольшевистских режимов востока России применительно к деятельности Временного Сибирского, Временного Всероссийского и Российского правительств. Делается вывод о том, что практика награждений носила противоречивый и разнонаправленный характер. Попытки адаптировать традиционную русскую наградную систему к радикально изменившимся обстоятельствам приводили к девальвации этих наград в глазах общества и армии. В данных обстоятельствах стала проявляться тенденция к учреждению новых, оригинальных знаков отличия. История учреждения новых орденов отразила идейно-политическую неоднородность антибольшевистского движения и низкую эффективность деятельности государственного аппарата. Несмотря на существенное внимание, уделявшееся лидерами антибольшевистского движения вопросу о наградах, целостная и эффективная наградная система на востоке России в период гражданской войны так и не сложилась.
The article deals with the award system of anti-Bolshevik regimes in Eastern Russia with regard to activities of the Provisional Siberian, Provisional All-Russian and Russian Governments. The study concludes that the award practices were of a contradictory nature. The attempts to adapt the conventional Russian award system to the dramatically changed conditions led to devaluation of these awards in the eye of public and army. Under these circumstances, the tendency to establish new, unique badges of merit has occurred. The history of establishing new orders reflected the ideological and political discontinuity of Anti-Bolshevik movement and the low efficiency of state machine activities. Despite the great attention paid by the leaders of Anti-Bolshevik movement to the issue of awards, the integral and effective award system has never been established in Eastern Russia during the Civil War.

Марченя П.П. Крестьянское сознание как доминанта Русской революции / П.П. Марченя // Научный диалог. – 2015. – № 12 (48). – С. 303–315. 
Крестьянское сознание рассматривается в качестве доминантного фактора политической истории всей Русской революции первой трети XX века. Утверждается, что крестьянское со- знание, архетипы которого коренились в русской поземельной общине, служило матричным для массового сознания в целом. Отмечается, что именно крестьянское / массовое сознание играло решающую роль в историческом выборе России в ситуации системного кризиса, поставившего под вопрос дальнейшее существование Империи как особой формы единения власти и масс. Автор полагает, что в конкурсе исторических проектов боровшихся за власть политических партий судили массы, искавшие «свою» власть в системе архаических координат «свой—чужой». По мнению автора, в этом поиске и заключается функциональный смысл «Русской смуты» как болезни Империи, связанной с угрозой прерывания исторической преемственности цивилизационных императивов и проблемой цивилизационной идентичности элит и масс. Доказывается, что отсутствие резонанса с системообразующими параметрами сознания общинного «мира» у политических элит, претендовавших на наличие «исторической альтернативы», означало невозможность их реального политического будущего. Точка зрения автора состоит в том, что большевизм оказался единственной политической силой, адекватной массам. Peasant consciousness is considered as the dominant factor in the political history of the whole Russian revolution of the first third of the XX century. It is argued that peasant consciousness, the archetypes of which was rooted in the Russian land community, was a matrix for mass consciousness as a whole. It is noted that Russian mass consciousness played a crucial role in the historical choice of Russia in the situation of systemic crisis that called into question the further existence of the Empire as a special form of the unity of power and mass. The author believes that the competition of historical projects fought for power of political parties was judged by the masses who seek “their own” power in the archaic system of coordinates “friend or foe”. According to the author, this finding is the functional meaning of “Russian Confusion” as the disease of the Empire, associated with the threat of interruption of historical succession of civilizational imperatives and the problem of civilizational identity of elites and masses. It is proved that the lack of resonance with the core parameters of the consciousness of community world in the political elites, claiming the presence of “historical alternatives”, meant the impossibility of their real political future. The author’s point of view is that the Bolsheviks were the only political force that wass adequate to the masses.

После Октябрьского переворота в 1917 г. около 30 000 бывшие поданики Российской империи, не принявшие большевистский режим, оказались в Болгарии в качестве эмигрантов. В то же время в балканскую страну хлынула другая, еще более крупная волна беженцев - тысячи болгары, бежавшие вместе с семьями из Греции и Турции, в чьих пределах после Первой мировой войны остались исконно болгарские земли. Чтобы спастись от этнической чистки, проводимой соседними странами, большинство беженцев из Восточной и Западной Фракии, добрались до родины в одной рубашке. Русские эмигранты тоже бедствовали, но подали руку помощи братьям по судьбе. Об одной такой кампании по сбору средств в конце 1924 и начале 1925 г. рассказывает выходившая на русском языке в Болгарии газета "Кубанец - Алексеевец" - издание Кубано-Сергеевского военного училища, которое в то время находилось в маленьком городке Тырново-Сеймен в Хасковской области. Три года спустя Болгарию потрясло сильное землетрясение. Погибли 123 человека, более 600 были ранены,  а 73 000 здания - разрушены. Командир Донского корпуса в Болгарии ген.-лейтенант Федор Абрамов выдал приказ о сборе денежных средств №6/ 22.04.1928 г., в котором подчеркивает: "Большое бедствие постигло приютившую нас Болгарию. Много сел и городов разрушено землетрясением до основания... Нужна помощь. Наш долг немедленно оказать ее, в меру наших сил и возможности.
... Одновременно с высылкою денег прилагать список тех казаков, которые отказались внести свою долю на помощь болгарам. Пусть каждый из русских вспомнит, что Болгарское Правительство ежемесячно отпускает в помощь русским ветеранам, инвалидам, учащимся студентам, на содержание русских гимназий, детских садов и санаторий для туберкулезных - всего до миллиона лев в месяц. Это великая жертва со стороны болгарскаго народа.

В своей публикации в мае болгарская газета "Мир" сообщает о конце кампании в помощь пострадавших от Чирпанского землетрясения и общая сумма средств, собранная казаками и предоставленная Болгарскому красному кресту.

Beginning in 1914 with the outbreak of the Great War, excessive hardship and continuous turmoil permeated the lives and decisions of people living in the Russian Empire as they attempted to navigate through a world war, two revolutions, a Civil War, and a multifaceted restructuring of nearly all aspects of existence by the time the Soviet Union officially established itself in 1922. This paper explores how David Burliuk, the proclaimed “Father of Russian Futurism” and a prolific painter, writer, performer, and participant in numerous imperial avant-garde circles, responded to this near-decade of revolutionary upheaval. Despite his progressive vision of Russia’s future, ties to socialist politics, and hope to continue participating in the modern art scene, Burliuk considered the fighting and the new Bolshevik government to be a threat to himself, his family, and his work. He abandoned Moscow in 1915, increasingly moving eastward along the Trans-Siberian Railroad as the Civil War progressed. From 1918 to 1920, Burliuk attempted to continue his avant-garde enterprises by painting, forging new connections with other artists, and going on tour even as he relocated from town to town through Siberia, eventually reaching Vladivostok on the Pacific coast. Burliuk spent five years living on Russia’s periphery, two of them in Siberia in self-imposed exile, as he debated whether he could continue as a leading avant-garde figure in Russia or if he should abandon his life for another country. Ultimately, he concluded that the Bolsheviks and the incessant chaos posed too much of a threat for constructive cultural production, emigrating from Vladivostok to Japan in 1920 and from Japan to New York City in 1922, where he found a suitable environment to work until his death in 1967. His experiences in Siberia and reflections on Russia’s revolutionary period provide valuable insight into both the art world and how people perceived life in the newly-formed Soviet Union.

Статья рассматривает формирование жанра некролога в первые годы Советской власти, а также отзвуки ранних текстов в последующей советской историографии. Некрологические тексты играли важную мобилизующую роль в советской культуре периода Гражданской войны, причём не только для коммунистов, но и для других политических групп. Посмертная героизация затрудняла использование некрологов как исторического источника, поскольку эти тексты задавали рамки последующих нарративов.

В статье исследуются причины и обстоятельства возникновения буддийского теократического государства Лубсан-Самдан Цыденова (1850-1922), выдающегося религиозного деятеля из среды монголоязычного народа буряты, принявшего тибетский буддизм в середине XVII века до вхождения в состав России. На базе ряда малоизвестных рукописных источников на тибетском, монгольском и русском языках предпринята попытка детальной реконструкции событий в сибирском Забайкалье в годы Гражданской войны, приведших к созданию буддийской теократии, а также обстоятельств жизни самого Лубсан-Самдан Цыденова. Анализируя личные записи Цыденова, а также текст конституции Кудунской теократии, автор статьи выявляет идейные основы буддийского государства, а также дает полную картину его структуры и механизмов функционирования. В статье делается вывод о том, что Кудунский проект возникает на стыке традиционных буддийских представлений о дхармическом государстве и модернистских идей о республиканской форме правления и конституционной демократии. Кроме этого, теократию Лубсан-Самдан Цыденова следует рассматривать и в контексте реакции буддийских кругов на попытки светских бурятских националистов начать строительство бурятской государственности, основанной на принципах национального самоопределения. В статье делается вывод о том, что буддийские ламы были глубоко вовлечены в политические процессы, происходившие в регионе в годы Гражданской войны, и что на примере Кудунской теократии мы видим, как буддизм мог служить продуктивной почвой для государственного строительства в эпоху политического кризиса в России первой четверти XX века.

The paper examines causes and circumstances of establishment of the Buddhist theocratic state by Lubsan-Samdan Tsydenov, an outstanding Buddhist figure. Tsydenov belonged to the Mongol-speaking Buriats that accepted Tibetan Buddhism in the middle of the 17th c. prior the date they became subjects of the Russian Tsar. On the basis of some hitherto unknown Tibetan, Mongolian and Russian written sources a detailed reconstruction of the events in Siberian Transbaikalia in the period of the Civil war that have led to establishment of the Buddhist theocracy is undertaken. Analyzing personal notes of Tsydenov as well as the text of the Constitution of Kudun valley Buddhist state the author highlights the ideology of the Buddhist state and gives an exposition of the structure and mechanisms of functioning of the state institutes. In conclusion, the author forwards the idea of the Kudun theocracy as a syncretic fusion of the traditional Buddhist understanding of the Dharma state and modernist conceptions of republican institutes and constitutional democracy. In addition, the Kudun theocracy should be considered in the broader context of the response of the Buddhist circles to the attempts of the Buriat secular nationalists to build the Buriat statehood based on the conception of national self-determination. It is concluded that the Buddhist lamas actively participated in the political events of the time during the period of Civil war in Russia and that Buddhism could serve as a fertile soil for state formation in the age of the early 20th century Russian political crisis.

В статье рассматривается вопрос о том, как большевики в конце 1917 – начале 1918 гг. смогли взять под контроль самоуправление Москвы, изучаются первые шаги новой власти в управлении муниципалитетом, исследуются их действия по трансформации системы управления городом. На основе архивных материалов, прессы, а также воспоминаний муниципальных деятелей-большевиков автор делает вывод, что радикальные социалисты отказались от думской модели самоуправления из-за обострения борьбы со своими оппонентами, неготовности идти на компромисс, необходимости централизации управления, общности компетенции органов самоуправления и Советов.

В статье делается попытка рассмотреть восприятие Гражданской войны в России студентами российских вузов в возрасте от 18 до 22 лет. Респондентам было предложено ответить на ряд вопросов полуоткрытого и закрытого характера, касающихся основных характеристик Гражданской войны как исторического явления, причин её возникновения, особенностей, следствий, участников. Выявленная в ходе исследования дифференциация мнений, где умеренные оценки в вопросах о причине Гражданской войны, ответственности участников и увековечивания памяти её участников соседствуют с крайне противоположными ответами в области личного отношения к сторонам, может говорить об отсутствии целостного понимания процессов тех лет.

В статье изучается процесс организационной и функциональной трансформации органов управления местным хозяйством в первые годы Советской власти, когда в ходе споров и конфликтов на местах и в центре, в условиях соперничества НКВД и ВСНХ
появились и получили оформление коммунальные отделы. Делается вывод, что были утеряны многие функции и приобретены новые, в первую очередь жилищная сфера, произошел почти полный разрыв в кадровом отношении, изменился порядок формирования, но в организационном плане очевидны элементы преемственности с дореволюционной эпохой. К концу гражданской войны органам местного хозяйства удалось сохраниться как обособленной хозяйственной структуре в виде коммунальных отделов под контролем и управлением ведомства внутренних дел. Автор также констатирует, что за время гражданской войны городской уровень управления ослаб и оказался гораздо более бюрократизированным.

The article studies the process of organizational and functional transformation of local government in the first years of Soviet power. During disputes and conflicts on the local level and in the center, under conditions of rivalry between the NKVD and the Supreme Economic Council, communal departments appeared and took shape. It is concluded that many functions were lost and new ones were acquired, primarily the housing sector, there was an almost complete personnel gap, the formation order changed, but in terms of organization elements of continuity with the prerevolutionary era are obvious. By the end of the civil war, local authorities managed to survive as a separate economic structure in the form of communal departments under the control and management of the interior department. The author also notes that, during the civil war, quality level of urban government sharply worsened and turned out to be much more bureaucratic.

Based on Russian and Swiss materials, this article examines the history of the Russian Red Cross Society during the Civil War. The arrival of the Bolsheviks to power led to the breaking up of the Russian Red Cross Society (RRCS) into a multitude of national and political associations, each claiming it as their material and symbolic heritage. When the Civil War began, these fragments of the RRCS no longer existed as effective sanitary organisations. But in autumn 1918, as epidemics threatened troops and civil populations alike, the RC institutions had to be set up again urgently. In view of their experience and infrastructure, the so-called Moscow, Omsk, and Kiev RC organisations quickly became decisive players in the Civil War with the Red Army and the White Armies of Kolchak, Denikin, and then Wrangel. In many fields, these RC organisations acted as a substitute for the State. They were responsible for nursing, nutrition, and evacuation. On the external front, their mission was to recover the assets of the former RRC: the Russian soldiers arrested abroad, the exclusivity of the RC emblem and the material assets of the RRCS.
In conclusion, this article argues that the Russian Civil War was also, for the entire international RC movement (the International Committee of the Red Cross and the League of Red Cross Societies), a dramatic theatre of modern humanitarian action in terms of practices and of laws that had to be invented. Due to its fragmentary nature, a mixture of identity, social, and ideological conflicts, in which civil populations were in the foreground, and in which national and international players intermingled, the Russian Civil War was a forerunner of the “new wars” of the late 20th century.

It is established that Party-army relation followed a "separated" pattern in the Soviet Union as opposed to an "infused" pattern in China. This article explores the historical origin of this difference in the revolutionary periods. By analyzing the biographies of communist military elites, it argues that this discrepancy took shape before the revolutionary takeover and resulted from the differentiated intensities of warfare across Russia and China. In China, the numerous civil wars and military defeats, radicalized the old military structure and boosted societal militarization; thus, eroding the mutual exclusion between the military and revolutionaries. The effect was lesser in Tsarist Russia than in prerevolutionary China, making the old military a conservative and professional corporate that the Bol-sheviks could not completely subordinate to Party control.

This article examines the problem of city management after the Bolsheviks coming to power. The author notes that at the end of 1917 the Bolsheviks tried to limit bodies of city self-government by administrative issues and to depoliticize it. Then the Bolsheviks handed city economy over to the city councils. In 1918 radical socialists failed to establish a unified policy on the question of whether to preserve the organizational unity of municipal economy or disperse it among different departments of city councils.

Publishing in the Soviet Ukraine of the 1920s was the art of the possible: on the one hand, the state controlled and in most cases directly supervised the periodicals that catered to the public, on the other hand, this control had its limitations and was met with a certain will to self-expression and autonomy among editorial teams. This led to the appearance of complex negotiated narratives that, while giving lip service to the ideological line of the party, inscribed enough subversion “between the lines” (at times, as it happens, even contrary to the author’s intentions). It is especially interesting to trace this negotiation in the construction of such highly ideological theme as the Civil War and its aftermath.
In this paper, I suggest looking at the “middle class” of the literary production between the mass press’ low end and the “heights” of more self-sufficient literature: the illustrated magazine. Several types of it were published in the Soviet Ukraine of the 1920s as part of the modernisation project, in its own turn negotiated between the intelligentsia and the party. The vast archive of the Civil War as found in these magazines includes memoirs, ideological treatises, fictionalised documentary and outright fiction, and even contemporary reportage and news chronicle. Most of the texts suggest a rather crude picture of the War fought between the apostles of progress (the Bolsheviks and thinly veiled nationalist activists from a broader range of leftist parties) and reactionary forces (from monarchists to conservative nationalists) and a great transformative power that the writers ascribed to the War. I argue that it is in the figure of the Undecided that the negotiation is most evident and the plurality of voices from the 1920s can be reconstructed. This artificially constructed discursive figure that includes characters ranging from covert Bolshevik sympathisers in disguise to back-stabbing traitors was one of the few spaces where the middle range writers, themselves often undecided at best, could express the complexity of the situation they faced and were trying to comprehend.
