Secretum Secretorum

Imperial grimoires—that is, manuals on various forms of magic and divination written for or commissioned by royal readers—proliferated across the early modern Persianate world, more than paralleling the grimoire boom in Renaissance Europe. In extreme contrast to their contemporary Latin or English cognates, however, far less imperial in tenor, these Persian occult-scientific manuals have been left almost wholly unstudied. This programmatic article diagnoses the colonialist-orientalist causes for this wild imbalance in comparative early modern Western intellectual and imperial historiography and outlines a philological way forward. Far from being evidence for “the superstition of the Moslem natives,” such manuals are an indispensable aperture onto precisely those processes—common to Islamdom and Christendom alike—by which we define Western early modernity: textualization, canonization, standardization, confessionalization, centralization, imperialization, bureaucratization, democratization and mathematization. Yet they also record the religiocultural and institutional divergences that so distinguish the Islamicate and especially Persianate experience of early modernity from the Latin Christianate. Historians of books, of science and of empire must therefore finally overcome the eurocentrism and occultophobia still endemic in these fields, and cease judging Islamicate imperial occultism by Christianate standards, or simply writing it out of history altogether.

O presente artigo discutirá o lugar das concepções esotéricas nas relações de poder em
algumas cortes medievais. Foi escolhida como objeto de discussão a obra Secretum Secretorum, o
Segredo dos Segredos, texto no qual Aristóteles daria conselhos de governo a Alexandre, o Grande,
conselhos esses de teor esotérico. A análise está centrada em dois grandes eixos, sendo eles sua
circulação entre as cortes imperial e papal, como também as temáticas das quais tratava tal obra.
Acreditamos que a reflexão acerca do trânsito de tal livro entre essas duas cortes medievais, bem
como o conhecimento a ele atribuído podem colaborar para ampliar a discussão acerca do papel do
esoterismo como ferramenta aplicada nas relações de poder envolvendo interesses papais e
imperiais. Compreendendo o esoterismo como instrumento de hierarquização social, onde o seu
conhecimento ou a sua ignorância seriam capazes de causar distinção entre os homens, entendemos
que o Secretum Secretorum, e o poder atribuído aos seus ensinamentos, estavam inseridos nessa
dinâmica de relações de poder voltadas a separar os homens entre "aqueles que não podem saber" e
"aqueles que podem saber".

This article studies the presence and role of Hermes Trismegistus, the mythical sage of Antiquity, in thirteenth-century Castilian wisdom literature and its fundamental works: Bocados de Oro, Libro de los buenos proverbios y Poridat de las Poridades, which had as their direct ancestor in Latin the Disciplina clericalis by Pedro Alfonso. To this end, particular attention is placed on the transformations and re-elaborations that Hermes underwent after passing through Arabic culture, from which the most important works of the sapiential genre derive. Finally, the article also shows how this literature has traces of all the important currents developed by Arabic Hermetism. The article offers a broad perspective of how the Hermetic tradition found an unsuspected place in Spanish literature.

Este artículo estudia la presencia y el papel de Hermes Trismegisto, sabio mítico de la Antigüedad, en la literatura sapiencial castellana del siglo XIII y sus obras fundamentales: Bocados de Oro, Libro de los buenos proverbios y Poridat de las Poridades, que tuvieron como directo precedente en Latín la Disciplina clericalis de Pedro Alfonso. Para ello pondré particular atención en las trasformaciones y reelaboraciones que Hermes había experimentado tras pasar por la cultura árabe, de la que derivan las obras más importantes del género sapiencial. Finalmente, también mostraré cómo esta literatura tiene rastros de todas las corrientes importantes desarrolladas por la Hermética árabe. El artículo ofrece una amplia perspectiva de cómo la tradición hermética encontró un insospechado cauce de difusión en la literatura española.

The Mirror for Princes of Louis I of Hungary: the Secretum secretorum

My paper aims to analyse with new perspectives the pseudo-Aristotle manuscript
of Louis the Great of Hungary, the Secretum secretorum (Oxford, Bodleian Library,
MS Hertford College 2). Th e earlier research on it discovered that the codex could
have been made in the workshop that produced the famous manuscript of Louis, the
Chronica Pictum. Th is fact suggests that the Secretum was a part of the royal library.
In the article, I present the unknown details of the codex, like the structure and chap-
ter divisions (I published the contents in the appendix), comparing it to other three
Secretum manuscripts which comprise a group as determined by Friedrich Wurms.
Th e marks of later modifi cations in the marginal have been hitherto unnoted, as well
as the biographic details of the 17th century English possessor, Edmund Hall. Th e
only illuminated folio, the frontispiece, contains a portrait about King Louis as a
knight-king and I also compare this to other 14th century royal Secretum secretorum
volumes. Th e marginals could prove that it was not only used in the Early Modern
period, but also earlier in the court of Louis. John of Küküllő also made notes in the
margins which were integrated to his chronicle about Louis.

The study aims to offer new insights into the context of the manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, fr. 1822. Keith Busby has recently ascribed this miscellany of Old French moral texts (sole witness of Jofroi de Waterford’s translations) to the Irish city of Waterford. The paper discusses this hypothesis, focusing on the codicological and historical aspects of the manuscripts. Moreover, the article presents my research on the (probably Anglo-Norman) redaction of the Livre de Moralitez transmitted by the codex.

By looking at the representation of Aristotle in the Secret of Secrets, this article shows how the shared cultural inheritance of Classical civilization made the exchange of ideas between Islam and Latin Christendom possible. This sharing also allowed some aspects of pre-Islamic, Sasanian political thought, such as the circle of justice, to be diffused in the Latin west.

A középkori magyar királyok könyvtáráról és az általuk megrendelt könyvekről Mátyás király Biblioteca Corviniájától eltekintve viszonylag kevés ismeretekkel rendelkezünk. A korábbi kutatások alapján az Anjou időszakból Nagy Lajos királynak két bizonyosan számára elkészített kódexünk maradt fent: a jól ismert Képes Krónika és az oxfordi Bodleian Libraryben őrzött pszeudo-arisztotelészi S ecretum Secretorum (MS Hertford College 2 jelzeten) vagyis Titkok titka. Oxfordi kutatóútjaim során lehetőségem volt tanulmányozni a Nagy Lajos képmását is tartalmazó kéziratot, így előadásomban bemutatom a kódexről az eddigi kutatástörténeti ismereteinket és a X.. századi arab eredetű királytükör tartalmi pontjait. Mivel ismert, hogy Küküllei János felhasználta krónikájához a Secretum Secretorum egy példányát, és a korábbi kutatásokból hiányzott a kódex margináliáinak vizsgálata, így bemutatom a kódexben rejtőző kommentárokat (későbbi korok bejegyzéseit is), köztük Küküllei széljegyzeteivel. A másik, korábban csupán Friedrich Wurms által vizsgált terület, az oxfordi kódex kéziratcsoportja. Wurms összegyűjtötte disszertációjában a középkori Secretum secretorum kéziratokat, és az oxfordi kódexet az ún. „átrendezett kéziratok” csoportban helyezte el, amely ezzel együtt összesen négy kódexből áll. A kategórián belül az első egy XIV. század második felében készült itáliai kódex, egy bejegyzés titulatúrája szerint Bölcs Róbert apjáé, II. (Sánta) Károly (1285–1309) nápolyi királyé lehetett. A második kézirat Párizsban, a Bibliothèque national de France-ban található és Jean Juvénal des Ursins, reimsi érseké lehetett. A harmadik egy XV. századi müncheni kódexben van és noha illuminált kézirat, kronológiailag ez áll a legtávolabbi kapcsolatban a Lajos-féle változattal. Ezek vizsgálata közelebb vihet ahhoz a kérdéshez, hogy Lajos kódexét, amely a Képes Krónika műhelyében készült, valójában milyen kéziratról másolhatták és a fennmaradt Secretum secretorum példányok történetében, hogyan helyezhető el?

Denken über Fürsten und Gelehrte: Reflexionen über das Secretum secretorum im 14. Jahrhundert

In einem Workshop, der sich mit dem "Umgang mit Sonderwissen an den Höfen" befassen will, erscheint es sinnvoll, einen der Bestseller der mittelalterlichen Kultur zu besprechen, einen didaktischen Text, der sich in die Kategorie der specula principis einordnen lässt, aber Informationen zu einer Vielzahl von Themen bietet, von der Astronomie über die Medizin bis hin zum Anfertigen von Talismanen. Insbesondere dadurch, dass sich der Text als Brief von Aristoteles, dem Philosophen schlechthin, an Alexander den Großen, einem Monarchen von zentraler Bedeutung in der mittelalterlichen Kultur, darstellt, übernimmt er eine paradigmatische Funktion in der Konzeptualisierung des Verhältnisses von Monarch und Beratern sowie von Meister und Schüler. Verbreitet an den Höfen Europas, diskutiert dieser Text auch, wie Alexander mit den Trägern von unterschiedlichem Sonderwissen umgehen muss. Dieser kurze Aufsatz wird nicht alle Fälle der Verbreitung des Secretum erörtern können, sondern wird über die Konzeptualisierung des Verhältnisses zwischen Macht und Wissen im Text und über das Verhältnis zwischen Fürst und 'Spezialisten', wie es im Text dargestellt wird, nachdenken. Der Fokus richtet sich besonders auf einige Fälle der Verbreitung des Textes in Mittelitalien, wo, obwohl wir uns nicht in der Gegenwart von Höfen befinden, die mit denen in Frankreich oder England vergleichbar sind, das Secretum große Verbreitung fand und eine Seite in der Entwicklung des politischen Denkens darstellt, die noch auf eine vollständige Untersuchung wartet.

The Büchlein der Gesuntheit is a late fifteenth-century compendium of preventive and curative medicine. Examining the four extant manuscripts of the work provides an insight into how the compiler selected, adapted and organized his source materials, and demonstrates that the Büchlein was a structured and focussed treatise. The paper shows that both an earlier medical compendium, the Melleus liquor physicae artis Magistri Alexandri Yspani, and Konrad von Eichstätt's Regimen Sanitatis, were its main sources. The Melleus liquor offers therapeutic advice, the Regimen offers guidance on healthy living, the Büchlein both. When the two source works discuss the same plants as nutrition, medicine, seasoning (or something in between), the compiler of the Büchlein chooses the one or the other as appropriate. The paper also highlights how, in medieval medical compilations, extracts from longer works were separated from the original and took on a life of their own, while a series of shorter tracts became mutually attached and frequently compiled. The Büchlein der Gesundheit is a fifteenth-century compendium of preventive and therapeutic medicine,  created by organizing selected parts of medical treatises-themselves sometimes drawn from larger works-into a new and coherent whole. This practice was quite common in the medical texts of the time, and the compilers might not limit themselves to copying and/or translating their sources, but rather adapt them whenever they saw that the material was fit for their purpose. This paper aims to provide an insight into the way in which the Büchlein was assembled by studying the four extant manuscripts.

A középkori értékrendszerben az uralkodók felé támasztott elvárások (modellek és kiemelt erények formájában) mint például a harciasság, a könyörületesség vagy az igazságosság, változó hangsúllyal szerepeltek a politikaelméleti munkákban és az uralkodói reprezentációkban. Ezek közül a késő középkorra egyre inkább az okosság (prudentia) vagy a bölcsesség (sapientia) erénye került a középpontba, amit a 14. századi „Bölcs” melléknévvel kitüntetett uralkodók növekvő elterjedése is jelez, néhány korai példától eltekintve (mint a 13. századi X. (Bölcs) Kasztíliai Alfonz). Előadásomban ehhez kapcsolódóan vizsgálom a korban meghatározó Nápolyi (Bölcs) Anjou Róbert (1309–1343) király bölcsességet előtérbe helyező reprezentációjának és ideológiájának hatását V. (Bölcs) Károly francia (1364–1380)
uralkodóra és kortársára Nagy Lajosra (1342–1382). A korábbi kutatások megállapították, hogy Bölcs Róbert befolyásolhatta V. Károlyt, aki korának egyik legműveltebb uralkodója volt. Ezzel ellentétben Nagy Lajosról egy korábbi időkre jellemző imázs, a harcos lovagkirály kép alakult ki. Viszont érdemes megvizsgálni, hogy ez a kép mennyire árnyalható annak fényében, hogy Bölcs Róbert halála után a könyvtára Nagy Lajoshoz került, melynek egy példányát, a középkori udvarokban népszerű, Secretum Secretorum-ot a magyar király lemásoltatta. Ez a királytükör jellegű munka az államvezetés és a király személyét illető morális-politikai valamint orvostudományi, asztrológiai és más egyéb vonatkozású tanácsokat tartalmaz a király számára. Az oxfordi kódex címlapján egy Nagy Lajost ábrázoló miniatúra
látható, amit a Képes Krónika miniátora készíthetett, így tovább növeli a kötet jelentőségét a magyar udvari kultúrán belül. Előadásomban elsősorban V. Károly és Nagy Lajos reprezentációjának összefüggéseit vizsgálom a 14. századi bölcs uralkodók sorában és a Secretum Secretorum jelentőségét nemzetközi kontextusban.
