Semiotique

Ces dernières années, dans le domaine de la participation citoyenne aux politiques de la ville, bon nombre de chercheurs en philosophie politique et en sciences sociales ont plaidé pour un décentrement du discours et de l’argumentation, pour une communication démocratique plus « inclusive », plus « sensible », davantage en prise sur les environnements, sur les dimensions expérientielle et matérielle des problèmes urbains. Le message semble avoir été reçu. Visites de groupes dans les quartiers, reportages vidéo ou photo, expositions de dessins, jeux de construction, fonds de cartes à recouvrir d’icônes et de gommettes autocollantes, ateliers visant à imaginer « la ville de ses rêves », activités de théâtre-action, jeux de rôle et jeux de plateau, etc., sont en effet devenus des incontournables de la « boîte à outils » des professionnels de la participation. Dans cet article, plutôt que de nous intéresser aux différents « outils » dans leurs spécificités, nous voudrions interroger plus généralement la prolifération des méthodes cadrant les contributions citoyennes dans le domaine de l’image ou de l’imagination, et repliant la parole ordinaire dans ses fonctions d’ostension et de figuration, c’est-à-dire dans ses fonctions « indexiques » et « iconiques » (Charles Sanders Peirce). L’hypothèse qui nous guide est celle-ci : en lieu et place d’un enrichissement des processus de communication, on assisterait plutôt à un véritable « tournant sémiotique » dans les pratiques de démocratie participative ; un tournant à travers lequel l’image profane en viendrait peu à peu à se substituer au discours citoyen et à éluder, avec lui, les prétentions d’articulation, de problématisation, de synthèse et de généralisation chez les « participants ordinaires ».

È estatico ogni discorso che, costruendosi nel linguaggio e col linguaggio, rappresenta nondimeno una fuoriuscita da esso, un bloccarsi della semiosi, un venir meno delle distinzioni che fondano il senso. Trattasi dunque di un’impostura? Dell’evocazione impossibile, fra le maglie dell’immanenza, di una dimensione trascendente nella quale e verso la quale la prima si sfaldi, perdendo la consistenza di strutture e opposizioni? Rispondere affermativamente sarebbe forse semplicistico, sarebbe considerare l’estasi come puro effetto ottico, come sorta di trompe-l’oeil mistico. In realtà, come ogni trompe-l’oeil, anche l’estasi rinvia a qualcosa di più della propria semplice rappresentazione. Essa rimanda ai pregiudizi inconfessati di un’ideologia semiotica, alla trama nascosta, al negativo segreto che regge tutta la concezione moderna del senso e del linguaggio. Il discorso mistico, che corre parallelo e invisibile, spesso represso, a volte perseguitato, lungo tutta la storia delle religioni, esprime allora questo dubbio: e se il senso non fosse distinzione, separatezza, dualità? Se l’immanenza articolatoria che lo viviseziona non fosse che illusoria? A questo punta ogni racconto dell’estasi: al sospetto che i fondamenti della modernità, anti-mistici per definizione, non siano altro che una delle possibilità dell’umano, e che una storia non detta, in filigrana, si dipani accanto e sotto al moderno come traccia sbiadita di un altro percorso, di un altro modo d’intendere e di dire.

Un livre qui traite d'un point de vue théologique et culturel, la signification d'une icône représentant la Fête Impériale du Pentecôte, peinte par le Père Protos. Arsenie Boca, sur le voile de l'église du village de Drăgănescu.
L'icône émerge, apparemment, de l'ermitage byzantin de la peinture de l'église, mais à partir de la signification de l'icône dans le cycle des 12 fêtes impériales, et en utilisant la signification et la connexion entre les éléments utilisés par Père Arsenie dans la conception de cette icône, cet ouvrage actuel essaie d’argumenter une hypothèse assez audacieuse dans d'autres contextes théologiques, mais, à mon avis, la seule plausible pour la manière tout à fait unique dans l'histoire de l'iconographie dans laquelle cette icône a été peinte.
Le style du livre est moins académique et plus familier, s'adressant au grand public, mais la nouvelle perspective qu'il apporte sur l'évolution de l'Église au cours des deux mille ans du christianisme peut être un sujet de méditation académique sur l'évolution de l'histoire, de la culture et de la religion. Tout cela à la lumière d'une possible révélation divine du Père Arsenie Boca, par laquelle on essaie également à justifier le titre du livre.

Di tutte le annunciazioni che popolano la storia umana e le sue svariate tradizioni, al semiologo non interessa la fonte in sé, il numinoso che all’umano si rivolge per significargli di volta in volta la propria presenza, intenzione, sensibilità; interessa, piuttosto, il modo in cui a seconda delle epoche storiche, dei contesti culturali, delle vicende sociali, ma anche delle sensibilità individuali, uomini e donne hanno utilizzato i materiali del mondo, quelli dell’immanenza, per forgiare i significanti del divino. Ovvero, specularmente, il modo in cui hanno immaginato, e creduto con fermezza, che tali materiali divenissero d’un tratto appannaggio di una divina intenzione di comunicare, stoffa della rivelazione, parole annuncianti. Al teologo, non al semiologo, spetta immaginare la ricostruzione della totalità a fronte della quale si dipana il messaggio divino nella sua vicenda immanente. Al semiologo tocca invece un compito che è insieme più modesto e più costrittivo; innanzitutto raccogliere e inventariare queste tracce: in quali circostanze gli uomini e le donne hanno raccontato e raccontano di un loro incontro con il divino? Utilizzando quali segni? Piegandoli a quali necessità comunicative? Il compito successivo, più arduo, è analizzare questi segni, con gli strumenti di cui dispone la metodologia semiotica, per capire se si possano in qualche modo catalogare, suddividere in tipologie, distribuire in atlanti che, anche al di là e a dispetto delle differenze d’origine storica e confessionale, manifestino nondimeno dinamiche comuni nella costruzione e nell’elaborazione del linguaggio.

Semiotics (sometimes spelled “semeiotic”) is the name first given by John Locke, and later reprised by Charles S. Peirce, for the “doctrine of signs,” or the study of how some things can stand for other things to still other things. This deliberate inquiry can be contrasted with “folk semiotic” accounts, which assume that there is some intrinsic feature about, say, the human voice or a painted board that makes them capable of signifying. Such a naive assumption does not withstand serious scrutiny. From a philosophical standpoint, what makes something a sign is an involvement in a specific sort of triadic relation. This relation is found in human/nonhuman and deliberate/nondeliberate signs alike. Semiosis, the action of signs, is what permits communication, but it is wider than communication. For example, if while in an adjacent room I smell that the turkey in the oven is ready, my pet dog can smell it too, and the turkey is not trying to “tell” us anything. But if the cook in the kitchen tells me it is ready, I receive that message, while my dog hears the sounds but is none the wiser (in contemporary semiotic parlance, my dog and I couple our Umwelten via indices, but the symbols at hand generate interpretants only in my anthroposemiosis). In spite of the fact that it has a long and distinguished history (especially during the medieval period), general inquiry into signs became an organized research program only in the mid-20th century. Today, in addition to philosophers, semiotics attracts a wide range of scholars, such as ethologists, cognitive scientists, linguists, art historians, logicians, media theorists, literary critics, computer programmers, biologists, sociologists, and so on. From a methodological standpoint, then, parochialism is not an option. The scholarly literature can nevertheless be fruitfully divided into theoretical and applied strands. Not surprisingly, most philosophers drawn to semiotic questions work in the former strand. Semiotics is not to be confused with “semiology,” a (now largely defunct) project that originated in the lectures of the linguist Ferdinand de Saussure and which was active in the 1960s, mainly in France. Semiotics, by contrast, is a vibrant tradition that continues to flourish worldwide. Although some persist in employing the term “semiotics” when discussing narrow studies that focus exclusively on cultural codes, such terminological misuse masks the fact that a study of signs is broader than a study of language. A sustained philosophy of signs, then, promises (as Locke initially surmised) to yield truly novel insights.

Les masques médicaux qui se sont imposés comme dispositif pour contraster la contagion de COVID-19 affectent lourdement la présentation et la perception du visage, en en altérant radicalement la phénoménologie et la sémiotique, et en en frustrant la singularité. La production culturelle globale a souvent réagi à ces contraintes inédites, soulignant l’importance éthique de l’intégralité et de la singularité du visage contre toute tentative de fragmentation, segmentation, et classement. L’article propose une lecture sémiotique générale des tendances culturelles qui, dans les sociétés contemporaines, opèrent au contraire vers une chosification du visage, et que la pandémie de COVID-19 n’a fait qu’accentuer. L’article se concentre, en particulier, sur les nouveaux procédés de traitement automatique des images faciales, dont il démasque la rhétorique d’accomplissement technologique. En conclusion, l’article suggère que la protection et la libération du visage en tant que rempart de l’humanité ne peut que passer par l’envisagement d’une nouvelle ère appelée « Prosopocène », qui garantirait un visage inaliénable à chaque forme de vie contre toute dé-figuration humaine ou robotique.

Comment représenter l’identité d’une ville avec un logo ? L’analyse sémiotique de 161 signes et de 14 entretiens qualitatifs permet d’identifier quatre types de logos de villes. Ils la désignent, l’affirment avec emphase, la repré- sentent, ou mettent en scène une relation. L’article propose aux chercheurs et managers urbains de comprendre comment le logo renvoie à deux niveaux l’imaginaire d’une ville, selon quatre modalités sémiotiques décrites et discutées.

How can a city represent its identity with a logo? The semiotic analysis of 161 signs and 14 qualitative interviews identifies four types of city logos. They indicate the city, bombast it, represent it or symbolise a person-city rela- tionship. The article suggests that researchers and urban managers understand these signs as a symbolic system composed of two levels of urban imaginary, in accordance with four described and discussed ways of meaning.

Un vento di protesta sta scuotendo il mondo intero. È un vento che soffia da lontano, ma in questi ultimi tempi si è fatto impetuoso. Le elezioni presidenziali in Iran nel 2009, i moti di rivolta in Tunisia, Egitto, Siria, per tutto il Medio Oriente; l’occupazione simbolica di Wall Street; il “15 de M” spagnolo, con la Plaza de Sol gremita di dimostranti; i sollevamenti contro il TAV Torino-Lione in Italia, le lotte degli operai e quelle dei disoccupati; il sommovimento politico contro governi vecchi e inefficienti. Pare che a un certo punto della storia il mondo si sia acceso, e continui a pulsare con luce intermittente sin da allora: fuochi di protesta divampano, si diffondono, divorano regimi, governi, leggi; alcuni si propagano da una parte all’altra del globo attraverso la nuova scintilla di Internet, altri si sopiscono ed estinguono.
Lo studioso può, come ogni altro, entusiasmarsi di fronte a tanta energia umana, a tanto desiderio di rinnovamento, allo spettacolo del motore della storia che sembra come per incanto prendere abbrivio e non arrestarsi più; lo studioso può appassionarsi a tutto questo e forse deve. Però lo studioso deve, innanzitutto, capire e aiutare a capire. Perché la protesta si scatena in certe circostanze e non in altre? Cosa muove gli individui, i gruppi, i popoli a sognare uno stato di cose differente, ad accorgersi dell’inadeguatezza delle proprie esistenze, a produrre linguaggio e azione per cambiarne i connotati? Che cosa fa scattare in alcuni la molla della protesta, e cosa spinge invece gli altri a tacere, a sopportare, ad accettare? E poi come si costruiscono i modi della protesta, secondo quali leggi, quali regolarità, quali innovazioni?
Comprendere i modi attraverso cui individui e gruppi attualmente costruiscono i testi della protesta e come tali testi si volgano in testimonianza sociale più o meno efficace pare un compito imprescindibile per una semiotica che si voglia sempre più al centro della società contemporanea e delle pressanti richieste di conoscenza che da essa promanano.

The Epic of Gilgamesh, the first literary narrative known thus far, makes great contributions to the cultural history with its content full of myths, and it enables signification of the past and the future. Kadın Destanı, a restructured form of the Epic of Gilgamesh, assesses this signification process covering a period from ancient times to the present day through different perspectives and implies the cyclical characteristic of myths. As a contemporary narrative, it refers to a few past millennia and reflects the signification produced by the woman myth, indicating that re-signification is a possibility. Moreover, it positions the woman myth on the focal point of the narrative and directs its criticism in line with this center. Kadın Destanı questions the social status of women who are not portrayed as active subjects in epics. The narrative refers to the historical progress of the woman myth as a part of social perception regarding women, and it reflects this signification system as its topic suggests. The impression that life cannot be repaired but only reproduced through return to the origin is a widely held view (Eliade 1963, 30). Narratives with myths utilize this impression and aim to show that significations may be reproduced. To create the impression that the woman myth cannot be improved but recreated through a semantic perspective, Kadın Destanı establishes a bond with the Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest literary narrative.
The study aims to analyze the processes of signification by Kadın Destanı as a contemporary narrative through literary semiotics. The study is divided into three sections as; Kadın Destanı and the Epic of Gilgamesh, Myth and The Woman Myth and Analysis. In the analysis section, Kadın Destanı is reviewed within two segments based on two sub-narrative programmes constituting the main narrative programme. The narrative programmes are evaluated based on narrative profile, actantial profile and modal profile. The results are presented in the conclusion section. This study aims to assess the signification process by examining the narrative Kadın Destanı which reviews the woman myth from a critical perspective and demonstrates that the woman myth may be re-signified. The semantic value of the narrative indicates that the women-related perception of reality may be terminated, and women-related signification can be exceeded in patriarchal societies.

À partir des travaux de C. S. Peirce sur les habitudes et les changements d’habitudes, cet article présente le cycle des différentes phases qui se succèdent lors des interactionsavec un objet.
Les concepts Peirciens de croyance, d’habitude, de doute, de recherche et de changement d’habitudes sont organisés en un cycle dont les différentes phases sont explorées et affinées. Cette modélisation permet de comprendre les différents niveaux d’interactions entre les actions individuelles et les normes ou perte de repères des communautés interprétatives.
In fine, cette étude aborde la question de l’impact de la classe créative sur la définition des usages et des styles de vie.

Les réflexions actuelles centrées sur les questions de remédiation mettent en lumière certains rapprochements avec l'Appropriationnisme, mouvement artistique des années 80 qui, visant l'invention minimale, s'efforçait d'interpréter ou plus simplement de copier des oeuvres déjà faites. Mais si l'Appropriationnisme, en tant que métadiscours sur les valeurs artistiques, sollicitait une rediscussion du cadre de l'énonciation et interrogeait en particulier le statut d'auteur, la remédiation d'aujourd'hui veut être attentive aux transformations des formes soumises aux « corps technologiques ». Soucieuse de la vie intime des formes, elle laisse dans l'ombre la discussion sur l'énonciation. Dans cette communication, on voudrait relier les deux approches, artistique et scientifique, et soumettre une oeuvre majeure de Sherrie Levine qui s'appropriait celle de Walker Evans et fut, à son tour, reprise par Michaël Mandiberg, à cette double interrogation sémiotique.

Fin dalla sera dell'elezione al pontificato di Jorge Mario Bergoglio, il 13 marzo del 2013, è stato evidente a tutti che una rivoluzione era in atto nella Chiesa: una rivoluzione annunciata fin dal nome - Francesco - scelto dal nuovo Papa e dal primo, storico discorso pronunciato dal balcone su piazza San Pietro.La comunicazione è apparsa fin dall'inizio la spina dorsale di un progetto destinato a cambiare la storia della Chiesa Cattolica e non solo.
Questa raccolta di studi, la prima nel suo genere, analizza i vari aspetti della comunicazione di Papa Francesco, mostrando come essi non siano altro che i "capitoli" di un grande racconto complessivo, che intende raccogliere un'eredità millenaria e proiettarla nel futuro.

The article analyzes the phenomenology and semiotics of religious processions. On the one hand, these rituals succeed in congregating several individual agencies, thus helping them to obliterate the frontier between the sacred environment of the place of worship and the profane environment of the space surrounding it. Consequently, in religious processions, subjects experience an enlargement of the environment of the sacred that encourages them to believe in its omnipresence, in the reassuring belief that their entire existence takes place (literally and metaphorically) under the protection of transcendence. On the other hand, "accidents" caused by the persistence of individual agencies within the collective one constantly "threaten" the symbolic efficacy of religious processions: the tentative expansion of the sacred environment into the profane one results in a symmetrical expansion of the latter into the former. The collective agency of rituals disintegrates into the individual agencies of routines until subjects not only no longer believe that transcendence extends its protection also over the profane environment, but on the contrary, fear that such protection is fragile in the sacred environment as well. Rituals do not only turn into routines but collapse into the re-emergence of the insecurity of transition.

Résumé

Dans cet entretien, nous avons demandé à Sémir Badir (Université de Liège) d’expliquer en quoi consiste une sémiotique de l’exemple. L’approche sémiotique est ensuite située par
rapport à une approche rhétorique. Les avantages et les limites des deux approches sont analysés et l’entretien se referme sur les bénéfices d’un dialogue entre rhétorique et sémiotique, dès lors qu’il permet un questionnement de l’épistémologie de chacune des
disciplines.

Abstract
In this interview, we asked Sémir Badir (University of Liège) to explain what is a semiotics of example. The semiotical approach is then compared to a rhetorical approach. The advantages and disavantages of both approaches are analyzed and the interview concludes on the benefits of a dialogue between rhetoric and semiotics, as far as it allows epistemological reflections on each discipline.

Present-day economically developed societies devote unprecedented attention to food. The culinary discourse, in all its facets, gains increasing centrality in cultures. Institutions, media, and common people are obsessed with what they eat. In Italy, a country already aware of itself as regards food, gastronomy turns into the main concern, the most debated and cared of system of norms. Social phenomena like Slow Food and Zero Kilometer originate in Italy and then conquer the world, claiming that improving the quality of food is the way for a better planet. But what is the deep cultural meaning of this massive trend? What lies behind the culinary reason? Aesthetic neutralization of socioeconomic conflicts, chauvinistic marketing of stereotypes, and anti-intellectual subversion of sensorial hierarchies, the article contends.

""Sin da Sémiotique et Sciences Sociales (in particolare il saggio “Pour une sémiotique topologique”) di Algirdas Julien Greimas, la semiotica, e specialmente quella strutturale-generativa, si è sforzata di comprendere il senso dello spazio non solo nei testi letterari (rispetto ai quali abbonda una tradizione semiotico-narratologica di studio dello “spazio del racconto”), ma anche nelle situazioni sociali. Non mancano nella letteratura studi che applichino metodologie strutturali allo studio dello spazio mistico o ascetico così come esso viene evocato dal linguaggio verbale (Bergamo, De Certeau, Marin, Pozzi, etc.), mentre meno ricca è la bibliografia sullo studio socio- o etno- semiotico dello spazio mistico o ascetico in sé (Hammad, Leone in stampa).
Prendendo le mosse da questo quadro disciplinare, la relazione si soffermerà su un elemento poco studiato della semiotica dello spazio in generale, e di quella dello spazio mistico-ascetico in particolare: i materiali (ma vedasi Floch 2006). Lo spazio infatti non si compone solo di disposizioni topologiche, arrangiamenti formali, configurazioni cromatiche, ma anche di materiali, ovvero, semioticamente, di articolazioni culturali della materia del mondo, tutte dotate di precise connotazioni.
La domanda cui dare risposta è dunque la seguente: quali sono i materiali dello spazio ascetico? L’ascesi può forse compiersi in uno spazio costruito coi materiali della modernità, per esempio in un luogo fatto di plastica? E ancora: quale rapporto le diverse culture religiose impongono alla relazione fra il vuoto e il pieno nella costruzione materiale dello spazio ascetico?""

Le travaille sémiotique de A. J. Greimas et de son école a reconnu dans les sémiotiques visuelles une importante modalité de signification, appelée « semi-symbolique ». Dans cette modalité, chaque catégorie au plan de l’expression est liée à une catégorie différente au plan du contenu. Par exemple, dans le « Jugement universel » de Giotto, il y a une opposition entre la droite et la gauche au plan de l’expression, qui correspond a une opposition entre judicandi et judicati au plan du contenu. La musique a la possibilité de construire l’architecture structurale du plan de l’expression selon des oppositions catégorielles qui ressemblent à certains systèmes visuels comme la peinture ou le cinéma : les oppositions entre le haut et le bas, l’antécédent et le conséquent, aussi bien que les symétries typiques des canons font de la musique un système plastique (qui possède sa propre spécificité). L’écriture musicale, en tant que sémie substitutive, révèle la plasticité du système entier. La disponibilité d’oppositions catégorielles au plan de l’expression mène à la possibilité de l’utiliser pour véhiculer de pareilles oppositions au plan du contenu. Par exemple, la plus part des madrigalismes dans la musique de la Renaissance utilise le même mécanisme, et aussi la rhétorique des affects.
La structuration semi-symbolique dans un système plastique n’implique pas un actant-foyer, un spectateur ou bien un auditeur qui connaît le code, parce que l’ouvrage pose le code chaque fois selon une articulation différente. Au contraire, un système plastique présuppose un foyer qui peut reconnaître cette structuration élémentaire et s’interroger sur les différentes possibilités d’interprétation. Cela n'implique pas la connaissance a priori d’un code, mais plutôt d’un fond culturel
commun, une encyclopédie, qui nous permet de reconstruire les opérations de codage.
On peut donc parler avec Roman Ingarden d’une autonomie ontologique du texte musical, qui présuppose un auditeur phénoménologique qui remplisse les différents niveaux textuels avec les significations nécessaires. À cet égard, Umberto Eco parle d’un lecteur-modèle impliqué par le texte, lecteur qui explore les différentes interprétations permises par l’ouverture de l’œuvre artistique, en écartant celles qui sont interdites.

Nossa pesquisa propõe, em linha gerais, lançar as bases de um panorama historiográfico da semiótica dita da Escola de Paris. Avançamos a hipótese de que a semiótica francesa pode ser entendida como um paradigma científico nos termos de Kuhn e que a década de 1980 se configura como o período de ciência normal para a disciplina. Buscamos mostrar, a partir de uma análise preliminar de todos os números dos Bulletins dos Actes sémiotiques, de que forma a série foi se estruturando e como ela testemunha da evolução do fazer em semiótica. O caráter heterogêneo e variado dos Bulletins constitui justamente um testemunho dos debates teóricos e dos desenvolvimentos institucionais da disciplina no período, fornecendo assim os indícios necessários para a configuração da semiótica enquanto paradigma de pesquisa científico.

Abstract: In broad terms, our research aims at establishing the basis for an historiographic outlook of French school semiotics. We hypothesize that semiotics may be seen as a scientific paradigm in Kuhn's terms and that the 1980s see a period of normal science in this field. From the preliminary analysis of all of the issues of the Bulletins (series within the Actes sémiotiques), we show how the series is structured and how it witnesses the evolution of the work in semiotics. Its heterogeneous and varied character constitutes exactly a testimony of the theoretical debates and the institutional development of the discipline in the period, offering thus the necessary indications for the configuration of semiotics as a scientific paradigm of research.

A contemporary scholar’s duty is not only to reflect on what happens to a society when it expels any instance of negation, such in the case of dictatorships, but also on what happens to a community when collective empathy is constantly frustrated by operations of cleavage and relativizing. Isn’t this individualism of contrarian reactions also being conducive to a sort of moral paralysis, in which the continuous juxtaposition of competitive claims disrupts any attempt of moral project? In other words: what happens to a society when it is no longer able to hold a minute of silence for its victims of terror without individual voices to break the void? The narcissism that pervades social media is a mighty force, which sometimes works to the detriment of social cohesion.

After pinpointing the semiotic mechanism of relics, the essay exemplifies the danger of their being turned into fetishes with reference to the Tractatus Garsiae, a hilarious medieval parody that wittily uncovers the semiotic proximity between the collection of fetishized relics and that of fetishized money. The subsequent section points out how reliquaries have been adopted as an antidote to the fetishizing of relics, whereas the fourth explains how that works through a theoretical analysis of the human anthropology of wrapping. After indicating, in the next section, some possible directions of further analysis (in order to deepen the typological and comparative knowledge of reliquaries), the essay concludes by focusing on a case study of a pragmatically felicitous instance of a reliquary: the semiotic “open work” of Francis Xavier’s 17th-century reliquary in Goa.

Pour le fondamentalisme religieux, l’articulation du champs sémantique de la nourriture consiste essentiellement dans l’identification d’une séries de frontières, les plus contraignantes possibles, distinguant les fidèles des infidèles, les inclus des exclus, les amis des ennemis. Le fondamentalisme de la laïcité, lorsqu’il essaie d’écraser une minorité en humiliant ses frontières alimentaires, n’échappe point à cette définition. Cependant, il existe une façon différente de construire l’identité religieuse par la référence à la nourriture. Ce parcours, dont on retrouve des traces dans la lecture talmudique de la Torah, mais qui prend son essor surtout après l’invention augustinienne d’une « bouche intérieure de l’âme », prescrit une identité qui ne se bâtit pas par l’interdiction de telle ou telle nourriture mais pas la promotion d’une technique alimentaire intérieure, symbolisant le rapport à garder avec la transcendance et sa parole. A partir de la théorie aristotélicienne du goût, ultérieurement articulée par la médicine galénique, l’exégèse et la spiritualité chrétiennes médiévales développent un imaginaire de plus en plus complexe et subtil de la mastication, jusqu’à la synthèse que, par le biais de Pierre de Jean Olieu, Albert le Grand, et Thaddée de Florence, en proposera Dante dans le Convivio. Le message ultime que cette tradition lègue à la culture occidentale survit, mutatis mutandis, dans l’idéologie du sens qui caractérise le projet sémiotique : comprendre le sens d’un texte c’est le briser, en mâchant son écorce par une certaine technique de mastication, c’est-à-dire par une certaine analyse, afin d’en atteindre la moelle, le sens ultime.

In 2006, acclaimed Italian film director Nanni Moretti released Il caimano [“the Caiman”], a surreal depiction of Silvio Berlusconi’s career as controversial businessman and politician. In one of the last sequences, an indicted Berlusconi leaves the courthouse of Milan, while his supporters besiege its premises and set them on fire. Admired for his capacity of prophetically foreseeing the developments of Italian society (2011 film Habemus Papam, by the same director, somehow ‘predicted’ the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI), Nanni Moretti’s apocalyptic vision was confirmed by reality on March 11, 2013, when a group of deputes and senators from PDL, Silvio Berlusconi’s political party, ‘besieged’ the Court House of Milan in order to interfere with the new trials the political leader was involved in: an affair of prostitution of minors, known as “the Ruby case”, and the alleged corruption of a senator. Since when Silvio Berlusconi has been the center of the Italian both political and juridical arena, and with the increasing representation of his trials in Italian and international media, the courthouses of such trials, and particularly that of Milan, have turned more and more into the theater of a socio-political showdown, in which what matters though is not only what takes place in the Court, but also, and perhaps even more, what happens in the area surrounding its premises. Here pro- and –anti Berlusconi partisans gather daily in order to manifest their stand to both the citizenry and the media; here media professionals are stationed 24/7, waiting for the next scandal; and here a dramatic battle line between the political power and the juridical one inexorably materializes with all the violent evidence of its proxemics. The essay analyzes through semiotics a series of verbal and especially visual texts representing the courthouses of Silvio Berlusconi’s trials, with the goal of understanding what this imagery reveals of the current trends of Italian socio-political and juridical arena. More broadly, the essay compares this case study with other instances of courthouses besieged by crowds, so as to semiotically seize the delicate equilibrium of the judiciary proxemics between totalitarian and populist ideologies of law.

The present paper argues that the semiotic concept of iconicity, as is defined in the theory of Algirdas Julien Greimas, is extremely useful in order to understand the relations between voyeurism, considered as one of the key-elements of the contemporary episteme, and violence, as is represented through both visual and non-visual media. Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar’s film Tesis is adopted as a case-study and analysed in-depth as a meta-logical reflection on the very peculiar filmic genre called snuff, wherein the concept of iconicity is indispensable in order to single out the semiotic devices which create an obsessive link between a scene of violence and the desire of observing it.

D’entrée de jeu, je définirai la sémiotique comme l’étude des pratiques sémiotiques, c’est-à-dire l’étude des manipulation, compréhension et interprétation des productions sémiotiques et culturelles. Une telle définition a l’avantage de mettre l’emphase sur les processus mis en jeu par une sémiose, sur les modalités d’attribution des objets de pensées aux signes, le maintien de ces attributions ou leur transformation . Les cas auxquels je veux m’arrêter ici portent sur des situations d’illisibilité, quand un signe quelconque apparaît opaque, qu’il semble en fait en état de désémiotisation. Comment décrire un tel état, comment surtout montrer ce qui est requis pour sa sémiotisation ?

L’intelligence artificielle appliquée aux images complexes relève d’un défi : conçue avant tout selon le modèle narratif de la trajectoire, elle peut facilement gagner n’importe quelle partie d'échecs avec un humain, mais elle est en difficulté en conduisant une voiture, du moins pour le moment. En effet, appliquer la logique déductive ou inductive à des systèmes extrêmement complexes peut donner lieu à des obstacles insurmontables. La sémiotique, qui hérite de la sagesse de la sérendipité orientale à travers le filtre de la philosophie moderne de Voltaire, Peirce, Eco, entre autres, peut jouer un rôle fondamental dans la refonte de l’intelligence artificielle contemporaine, qui devra nécessairement inclure une réflexion sur la sérendipité, et donc sur l’abduction, pour relever les défis de systèmes complexes et, notamment, de la « vision artificielle ».
La conférence retracera l’histoire de la philosophie de la sérendipité, mettant en évidence l’importance qu’y joue un élément en particulier, le visage, à partir d’un portrait de femme adoré par l’écrivain anglais Horace Walpole — inventeur du mot « sérendipité » — jusqu’à aux visages perçus, lus, et interprétés par l’intelligence artificielle contemporaine.

The objects of semiotics are always spatial. But this spatiality is manifold. We must distinguish three main levels: 1. spatiality of the content (diegetic) which has been extensively studied; 2. spatiality of the expression (of the signifier), mainly studied for the form of expression; but in some cases (for instance screens) a spatiality of the substance of the expression is also important; 3. spatiality of the enunciation, both of emission and reception. I call "natural" the case in which the space of content and that of perception of the text are conjoined. Many informatic applications are able to carry out a spatial (and also temporal) embrayage by themselves. But this embrayage has also been joined by the inverse one, so that the net allows for total débrayage, the representation of each "natural" place in an abstract and "anonymous" form. Screens are now able to present every place, just because they are no place. They are able to become trans-spaces,beyond the sense of place.

Cette étude porte sur les éditions photographiques de Félix Thiollier (1842-1914), les livres qu’il a travaillés en tant qu’éditeur mais aussi auteur, illustrateur, photographe. Industriel érudit ayant décidé de vivre de ses rentes, Thiollier publie à partir de 1881 plus de quarante ouvrages traitants d’art, d’archéologie, parfois de tourisme et de thèmes régionalistes. Le mémoire s’attache à définir la structure de cet ensemble ainsi que le cadre méthodologique qui permet d’étudier l’éclosion de son sens, à travers la prise en compte des relations entre le texte, les images, le graphisme et la typographie des livres.
En analysant les réseaux culturels dans lesquels Thiollier gravite aux quatre coins de la France, la thèse identifie la personnalité unique de cet éditeur capable de mettre en relation différentes sphères sociales, et se mêlant indifféremment aux réseaux techniques, artistiques et scientifiques de son temps. L’étude permet de présenter les enjeux idéologiques qui enserrent la production des œuvres et contribue à conditionner leurs formes. D’apparence traditionnelle mais accueillant les dernières techniques de reproduction d’image, les livres de Thiollier témoignent de l’influence de la mystique chrétienne, du libéralisme postrévolutionnaire et s’inscrivent dans le prolongement du mouvement catholique libéral finissant, alors que celui-ci tente de réinventer la tradition, de construire un progressisme dans le conservatisme en interrogeant les hiérarchies esthétiques et sociales en vigueur.
En prêtant une attention particulière à la fois aux conditions de production des œuvres, aux réseaux d’acteurs et aux discours de légitimation, nous proposons une analyse des complexes discursifs que sont les ouvrages de Thiollier, qui étudie leur matérialité tout en comprenant la pragmatique des forces qui a conditionné leur émergence.

This study covers the photographic editions of Félix Thiollier (1842-1914), the books he has worked as an editor and / or author, illustrator, photographer. Industrial entrepreneur and amateur scholar who decided to live on his income, Thiollier published from 1881 onwards more than forty works dealing with art, archeology, sometimes tourism and regionalist themes. The thesis seeks to define the structure of the meaning of this set as well as the methodological framework which allows to study the emergence of this meaning, through the consideration of the relationships between text, images, graphics and typography of books.
By analyzing the cultural networks in which Thiollier gravitates in Saint-Étienne as in Paris, we identify the unique personality of this publisher, capable of bringing together different social spheres and mixing indifferently with the technical, artistic and scientific networks of his time. The study makes it possible to present the ideological issues that surround the production of works and help to condition their forms. Traditional in appearance but welcoming the latest image reproduction techniques, Thiollier's books testify to the influence of Christian mysticism, of post-revolutionary liberalism and are part of the extension of the ending liberal Catholic movement, while trying to reinvent tradition, to build a progressivism in conservatism by questioning the aesthetic and social hierarchies in effect.
By paying particular attention to both the conditions of production of works, the networks of actors and the discourses of legitimation, we propose an analysis of the discursive complexes that are the works of Thiollier, who studies their materiality while understanding the pragmatics of forces that conditioned their emergence.

RESUMEN:
El artículo parte del cuestionamiento de la autorreferencialidad de la disciplina, acusada con frecuencia de hermetismo intelectual, y propone tomar en serio esas acusaciones, con el objeto de reconocer que hay que sacar a la semiótica de su ensimismamiento. Para ello, parte de la pregunta “¿para qué sirve la semiótica?”, retomando la ya bien conocida
definición de semiótica de Juan Ángel Magariños de Morentín (2008), y destacando de ella la operatividad que la arroja al mundo. Es a través de las operaciones, y no sólo a través de los conceptos, que se pueden explicar las significaciones que rigen en un determinado momento histórico de la vida de una determinada sociedad. Así, la semiótica
viene a constituir el instrumento metodológico dotado de rigor científico específico para analizar las significaciones reales y, especialmente, para colaborar en la transformación de lo socialmente instituido, función enactiva que permite postular a la semiótica como de naturaleza definitoriamente social. El artículo también toma prestados de Cornelius Castoriadis el concepto de imaginario social y la oposición minoría instituyente/mayoría instituida (1983; 1989), para analizar dos aspectos del imaginario social instituido contemporáneo que condicionan las modalidades a través de las cuales nos significamos a nosotros mismos en nuestra existencia cotidiana: la marca y la publicidad. Nos
encontramos en presencia de un imaginario propiamente imaginarizado: un imaginario carente de espesor simbólico, que no se plasma en una verdad social que todos debamos acatar, sino que se mantiene en la superficie de su propia naturaleza imaginaria. Hacia allí debe dirigirse una semiótica de intervención social, hacia el desvelamiento, a través
de esa práctica, de la naturaleza instituyente de unas actuaciones sociales e individuales aparentemente inocuas, la no-verdad que existe en ellas.

ABSTRACT:
This article starts from questioning the self-referentiality of Semiotics -often accused of intellectual hermeticism- and proposes taking these accusations seriously in order to recognize that this discipline should be removed from its tendency to self-absorption. To achieve this aim, we asked ourselves "What is the use of Semiotics?" taking into account
the well-known definition of Juan Ángel Magariños de Morentín (2008), and highlighting the operativity that throws it to the world. It is through operations, and not only through concepts, that anyone can explain the meanings that rule a particular historical moment in the life of a given society. Thus, Semiotics becomes the methodological instrument
endowed with a specific scientific accuracy to analyze real meanings and, specially, to collaborate in the transformation of the socially instituted, an enactive function that allows its postulation as a socially defined matter. Regarding this, this article borrows the concepts of social imaginary and the institutional minority/instituted majority opposition (1976) from Cornelius Castoriadis, to analyze two aspects of the contemporary socially instituted imaginary that subordinates the modalities through which we mean ourselves in our daily existence: brand and advertising. We are in the presence of a properly imagined imaginary: an imaginary lacking in symbolic thickness, not embodied
in a social truth that we all should hold to, but remaining on the surface of its own imaginary nature. A Semiotics of social intervention must be directed towards the unveiling of the instituting nature of apparently innocuous social and individual actions, and of the non-truth that exists in them.

O artigo parte do questionamento da auto-referencialidade da disciplina, muitas vezes acusada de hermetismo intelectual, e propõe levar essas acusações a sério, a fim de reconhecer que a semiótica deve ser removida de sua auto-absorção. Para isso, parte da questão "o que é uso da semiótica?", Retornando à já conhecida definição de semiótica
Juan Ángel Magariños de Morentín (2008), destacando-s aoperabilidade que o lança no mundo. É através das operações, e não apenas através de conceitos, que se pode explicar os significados que regem um momento histórico particular na vida de uma determinada sociedade. Assim, a semiótica se torna o instrumento metodológico dotado
de rigor científico específico para analisar significados reais e, em especial, colaborar na transformação da instituição social, uma função enactiva que permite a postulação da semiótica como uma natureza socialmente definidora. O artigo também toma emprestado
de Cornelius Castoriadis o conceito de imaginário social e a oposição da maioria institucional / maioria instituída (1983, 1989) para analisar dois aspectos do imaginário social instituído contemporâneo que condicionam as modalidades através das quais nos
referimos em nossa existência diária: a marca e a publicidade. Encontramo-nos na presença de um imaginário propriamente imaginado: uma falta imaginária de espessura simbólica, que não está incorporada a uma verdade social que todos devemos respeitar,
mas permanece na superfície de sua própria natureza imaginária. Para isso, uma semiótica da intervenção social deve ser direcionada para a revelação, através desta prática, da natureza institucional de ações sociais e individuais aparentemente inócuas, a nãoverdade que existe nelas.

È oggi tendenza assai diffusa quella di considerare i cuccioli, umani o animali che siano, come sorte di vite in potenza, la cui caratteristica primaria è una primigenia illibatezza d'animo. Così i bambini in fasce, liberi dal giogo della socializzazione, sono letti e divulgati nei termini di una speranza primordiale, ancorché vessati inconsapevolmente da una responsabilità non richiesta, quella di essere associati alla retorica del “classe dirigente che verrà”, del “futuro”, e simili. Si profila però,
fra le pieghe di quest'immaginario teso a celebrare i neonati come portatori di una benevolenza assoluta, un contro-immaginario più inquietante, anche se certamente più veritiero: il cucciolo come
contenitore vuoto, pronto a essere abitato da questa o quella educazione, da questa o quella ideologia, in ultima analisi dal Bene o dal Male. A dare conto di questa visione collettiva è in primis il cinema, che fa di frequente dell'infante una figura criptica, le cui intenzioni e possibilità risultano parzialmente o del tutto indecifrabili da parte del mondo contrappostogli degli adulti. A partire da questa premessa si staglia lo sterminato panorama di un certo cinema horror ove i bambini, o in alcuni casi i neonati, data la loro sostanziale verginità socio-psichica, si fanno contenitori di un male metafisico previa possessioni (che riducono il cucciolo a una sorta di simulacro – o capsula –
enunciazionale), o in casi meno gravi rapporti comunicativi “aumentati” con entità maligne. Caso emblematico è Rosemary's Baby (Polanski 1968) ove il cucciolo, appena nato, diviene involucro atto a contenere il demonio in persona, o L'esorcista (Friedkin 1973) ove similmente un antico demone abita la pelle di una bambina, o ancora Il sesto senso (Shyamalan 1999) in cui il bambino di turno è una sorta di medium fra il mondo dei vivi e quello dei morti, e così via. Dall'altro lato,
contro le forze del male, si assiste all'impotenza del mondo adulto, desideroso di contrapporre il riempimento demoniaco dei cuccioli che ritiene suoi con misurate quantità di bene. Ecco quindi
intersecarsi due assiologie di fondo, e cioè quella assolutistica e manichea che vede il male e il bene come poli diametrali, ma anche quella dell'adulto speculare al cucciolo, ove il primo si arroga il
diritto (sussunto per ordini anagrafici) di inserire un educazione nel secondo. Quest'ultimo paradigma, interiorizzato come un unicum dalle società occidentali, è stato più volte messo in discussione in termini di immaginario, come nel celebre caso de Il signore delle mosche (Golding
1954), romanzo che vede la creazione di una micro-società gestita da ragazzi – lessema “ombrello” che racchiude in sé una variabile fascia di età solitamente intesa fra l'infanzia e l'adolescenza –, ma
anche in generale tutto il “cinema per ragazzi” di derivazione spielberghiana (si pensi a E.T. l'extraterrestre, Hook – Capitan uncino, A.I. Intelligenza artificiale,...), in cui il mondo degli adulti è relegato in una posizione marginale e i sistemi di valori sono interamente gestiti da bambini e adolescenti (la cui “cucciolosità” si perpetra in un regime anagrafico non più chiaramente definito), capaci di esplorare il mondo mediante una purezza esclusiva, come nell'iconico caso de I Goonies (Donner 1985) o di Gremlins (Dante 1984), dove la salvezza del mondo è affidata proprio a ragazzi, e dove inoltre il modello del cucciolo contenitore è riproposto in versione proto-animale dal
gremlin, abitabile dal bene assoluto (in questo senso simile, anche in termini fisiognomici, al tòpos del gattino), o dal male più mefitico (che lo ri-pertinentizza anche figurativamente). Obiettivo di
questo saggio è dunque tracciare una semiotica del cucciolo cinematografico – in primis umano, ma anche animale – come figura attanziale in cui si incapsulano nel contempo assiologie e ideologie.
Per far ciò ci si avvarrà di analisi testuali circoscritte da un lato all'universo del cinema horror, trasversalmente (come dimostra, ad esempio, il filone del J-Horror da cui molto cinema occidentale
ha attinto, come nei casi di The Grudge (Shimizu 2004) e The Ring (Verbinski 2002)) costellato di cuccioli, e dall'altro al cinema (dei e) per ragazzi. Le analisi testuali permetteranno di individuare i
tratti distintivi dell'immaginario dei bambini intesi come figure archetipiche incontaminate, ma anche e sopratutto inquietanti poiché sostanzialmente imperscrutabili, di identificare stilemi formali
e programmi narrativi che li rendono tali.

L’évolution du monothéisme au sein d’une culture polythéiste est étroitement liée à l’institution de la dialectique entre monolâtrie et idolâtrie.  D’une part, une divinité parmi les autres devient le centre d’un culte de plus en plus exclusif. D’autre part, la progression de cette exclusivité procède parallèle à la stigmatisation de toute vénération alternative.  L’édification de la monolâtrie s’incarne à la fois dans les textes sacrés, qui désignent le dieu unique, interdisent les autres, prescrivent le culte légitime et condamnent les déviations, et dans la liturgie, où toute référence à une multiplicité de la transcendance est soigneusement évitée.
Le travail liturgique de la monolâtrie, cependant, n’est pas uniquement positif. Il consiste dans une réglementation des signes du culte, mais il relève également d’une tension destructrice.  Pour l’édification de la monolâtrie, fixer les formules pour l’évocation de la transcendance unique est aussi central que détruire tout signe la polluant par la représentation d’une divinité rivale.
