Augustine’s Sermon 4 on Esau and Jacob is long (860 lines) and consists of a complex division in 37 chapters. This division makes it difficult to identify quickly and easily the rhetorical arrangement which must have been an important factor in making this sermon a success in the context of Augustine’s struggle against Donatism. This same division has been handed down through the centuries. Once the existing, complex division into 37 chapters is relinquished, it is possible, on the basis
of linguistic and Scriptural indications, to establish the existence of a new, simple division into 3 parts. A frame exists in these three parts that runs from creation (Gen. 1) to judgement (Mt. 25), in which Augustine discusses the stories of (the blessings of) Esau and Jacob (Gen. 25 and 27) in the context of the absence or presence of love (for which he employs 1 Cor. 13). Seen from this perspective, Esau represents the bad people who consciously permit themselves to be separated from the Church through the absence of love (a reference to the Donatist schism), while Jacob stands for the good people, who highlight the unity of the Church by availing themselves of love: by not acting on their own authority and expelling sinners, but by leaving judgement to God and by accepting them lovingly. The new division clearly reveals this message.

An investigation of Ælfric's shame-vocabulary allows us to divide his shame concept into three areas: being (a)shamed, active shaming, and the shameful. The prototypical scenario of shame is humiliation or exposure before others. However, Ælfric asks his audience to imagine this kind of public, worldly shame in relation to failures to live up to Christian ideals; he thus encourages the ethicization and psychologization of shame. In addition, readers are invited to read to find Christian moral symbolism in narratives of shaming, while the emotive label of ‘shameful’ cues rejection and disgust towards what is wrong and pagan. Ælfric's appeals to shame promote self-scrutiny and the performance of a Christian identity. With respect to Anglo-Saxon shame in general, Ælfric offers a case-study in the flexibility of shame and its importance as a mode of knowing and performing the self.

This draft paper starts from Ælfric's Letter to Brother Edward, in which he expresses profound disgust against women who have beer-parties while sitting on the privy. It notes that when Ælfric depicts disgusting bodies they are usually male bodies and reflect his concern with deviant forms of masculinity. Ælfric himself shows a fastidiousness which is linked to his authority as a teacher and ecclesiastic. However, although he does not often dwell on disgusting female bodies, he does seem to connect them to human leakiness, mortality and fallenness.

Ce numéro a été réalisé par des théologiennes de l’ÉPUdF en Région parisienne, pasteures ou animatrice biblique. Une connivence s’est construite autour du geste de ratage du clown, évoqué par l’une d’elles. L’équipe s’est mise au travail, stimulée par cette image, mais sans la figer en modèle interprétatif. Rater est le contraire de réussir. Pour le clown, la réussite mène à la mort inévitable : plus de jeu possible, rien à inventer. Rater, au contraire, ouvre un chemin de vie. Tout reste à imaginer. Le ratage est alors jubilation, il entraîne le clown dans des voies jusque-là impensables : le « Pourquoi m'as-tu abandonné ? » de Jésus en croix à son Père, ne signifie-t-il pas le ratage même de Dieu, combien fécond ? On peut voir alors l'Évangile en découler comme sa fécondité même.. La Bible raconte- t-elle des ratages débouchant sur une fécondité ? Dieu lui-même peut-il rater ?
Dominique Hernandez relit en Genèse 2 la création de la femme. Dans l’indigna- tion actuelle au sujet de la subordination des femmes, sa sensibilité au jeu des termes, à leurs nuances, dans un récit que l’on croyait connu, est précieuse. Elle réfléchit à l’acte de création, aux limites posées à l’humain, au secours vital qu’est son vis-à-vis pour lui.
Florence Couprie pense le deuil. Elle lit le dernier chapitre du Deutéronome et s’étonne : la montée de Moïse sur le Mont Nebo pour contempler le pays promis, après quarante ans au désert, ne débouche pas sur le passage, sur l’entrée, mais sur la mort du serviteur de Dieu. Sa marche s’arrête là, au seuil de l’arrivée. Est-ce un ratage, et quelle est sa fécondité ?
Sophie Schlumberger a retenu, en Marc, un récit qui perturbe la ligne narrative : la guérison d’un sourd qui de plus bégaie ; l’épisode, par sa composition, fait en quelque sorte bégayer Jésus lui-même. Elle propose un canevas d’animation biblique pour un culte où, à l’image du récit, on se laissera porter par d’autres.
Agnès Adeline se penche sur la prédication inaugurale de Jésus à Nazareth : la plus brève de l’histoire de l’homilétique ! Mais la grâce reconnue à sa parole tourne vite au vinaigre, déjà le récit esquisse un horizon de Passion. Jésus tra- verse souverainement l’hostilité. Ratage qui a sa fécondité ?

Genèse 2,18-24; Deutéronome 34,1-12; Marc 7,31-37; Luc 4,16-30

Quatre théologiens de la région de Neuchâtel, en Suisse, se sont donné pour tâche de travailler sur des textes bibliques déjà « commentés » par de grands écrivains. Ils ont fait le pari que les œuvres littéraires en question permettraient au prédicateur d’enrichir son message. Ils ont choisi quatre auteurs faisant ex- plicitement référence à un texte biblique, mais d’origines très diverses.
Ainsi nous présentent-ils un classique de la littérature américaine, Herman Melville, lequel inclut au début de son Moby-Dick ou le Cachalot rien moins qu’une prédi- cation sur le psaume que Jonas adresse à Dieu dans le ventre du grand poisson.
Avec la deuxième étude, on passe à l’Europe centrale représentée par Joseph Roth et sa transcription de l’histoire de Job au début du XXe siècle. À noter que ce roman est paru en français sous plusieurs titres, dont Le poids de la grâce et de Job, roman d’un homme simple (utilisé ici). Comme l’œuvre couvre l’entier du livre de Job, il a fallu en choisir un passage. Avec Job 42,7-17, Philippe Nicolet complète l’exégèse de ce chapitre qu’il avait entamée au numéro 81 de Lire et Dire.
Une équipe suisse se devait d’avoir un de ses auteurs au programme, d’autant que la littérature suisse – et plus particulièrement suisse romande – fait très souvent référence à des thématiques et textes bibliques. C’est finalement L’évangile selon Judas de Maurice Chappaz qui a été retenu. Ce texte cite à plusieurs reprises le miracle « négatif » du figuier desséché de Marc 11, texte difficile qui n’avait jamais encore été traité dans notre revue.
Avec la dernière étude, on découvre un conte de l’espagnol Miguel de Unamuno intitulé Le bandeau. Il y est fait référence à Jean 1,4-5. Il a donc été choisi de travailler les treize premiers versets du prologue de l’évangile selon Jean.
Ce cahier aborde ainsi quatre textes bibliques que personne n’avait travaillé pour Lire et Dire, et pour cause : ils sont tous quatre redoutables. On verra que leur traitement littéraire ouvre des pistes très intéressantes et incite à oser reprendre en chaire ces textes magnifiques. J’aimerais encore noter que les quatre au- teurs se sont transmis et retransmis leurs textes – confinement oblige – jusqu’à satisfaction de toute l’équipe. Un grand merci à eux pour ce magnifique travail.

Jonas 2; Job 42,7-17; Marc 11,11-14.20-24; Jean 1,1-13

Masalah kehadiran umat katolik di gereja sudah terjadi sejak lama. Pada abad ke-19 diadakan survei nasional dan jajak pendapat di Inggris untuk mengukur proporsi penduduk yang datang ke gereja katolik pada hari minggu. Hasil survei menunjukkan bahwa umat yang hadir pada hari minggu biasa hanya 10-15 % penduduk dewasa. Pada hari-hari khusus, seperti natal dan paskah, umat yang hadir sekitar 25%.1 Minimnya tingkat kehadiran umat di gereja juga terjadi di Keuskupan Agung Medan (KAM). Dari hasil penelitian dan jajak pendapat Sinode VI KAM tahun 2016, diperoleh data bahwa hanya 34,3% umat yang selalu datang ke gereja pada hari minggu. Kehadiran umat yang lain bervariasi, mulai dari sering, agak jarang, jarang, sampai sangat jarang.2 Hal ini mengindikasikan lemahnya pemahaman dan penghayatan iman umat di KAM.3 Alasan lemahnya penghayatan iman umat ini bermacam-macam. A twelfth-century manuscript preserves an English homily known as the
History of the Holy Rood-Tree. In it, the three Rods of Moses perform a number of miracles, including turning the skin of several Ethiopian men and their sons white. The Ethiopian mothers, however, remain Black. The History is perhaps the earliest surviving English text to create a hierarchy of skin colour, and to explicitly state that white skin is more beautiful than black skin. This article frames the History as an early chapter in
the history of European depictions of Blackness. The Ethiopians know and respect God, and the History represents their Blackness as abject yet affording insight into God that white characters do not have. At the same time, they implicitly desire whiteness, in an uncanny precursor to the internalized feelings of inferiority that Frantz Fanon described for modern Black people. The History reminds us of the truth of Fanon’s claims that the European past holds modern Black people prisoner, and that it is important to write long histories of race and anti-Blackness.

La Biblia nos enseña que Dios estableció el matrimonio. Si el matrimonio es una maravillosa idea que nació en el corazón de Dios, entonces sólo el Señor puede mostrarnos cómo tener un hogar feliz. Nuestro Dios, el gran terapeuta familiar de todos los tiempos, ha revelado en su Palabra los principios eternos de la felicidad en la vida familiar. Hoy examinaremos los “Secretos para un Hogar Feliz” que presenta la eterna y siempre sabia Palabra de Dios.

À vous maintenant qui dites : « Aujourd’hui ou demain nous irons dans telle ville, nous y passerons une année, nous y ferons des affaires et nous gagnerons de l’argent », vous qui ne savez pas ce qui arrivera demain ! En effet, qu’est-ce que votre vie ? C’est une vapeur qui paraît pour un instant et qui disparaît ensuite. Vous devriez dire, au contraire : « Si Dieu le veut, nous vivrons et nous ferons ceci ou cela. » Mais en réalité, vous vous montrez fiers de vos fanfaronnades. Toute fierté de ce genre est mauvaise. Si donc quelqu’un sait faire ce qui est bien et ne le fait pas, il commet un péché.

Boala ne va pândi întotdeauna, însă trebuie să o vedem ca nişte copii ai lui Dumnezeu, şi nu ca nişte oameni ai acestei lumi. Trebuie să se sfârşească această viaţă lipsită de har, în care stăpâneşte demonul, să treacă lumea şi să vină harul lui Dumnezeu, ca să vină ceea ce este veşnic, nestricăcios. Adică prelungirea acestei vieţi este din lumea aceasta, în timp ce sfârşitul este lucrul firesc şi înalţă la ceea ce este suprafiresc, întrucât face să înceteze orice stricăciune şi deşertăciune, ne uneşte cu Însuşi Dumnezeu şi ne introduce în cămara Mirelui ceresc, unde nu există nici durere, nici întristare, nici suspin. De aceea, cel mai bun lucru pe care îl avem de făcut este, mai întâi, să iubim acea ultimă clipă a vieţii noastre, pentru că va fi clipa în care vom întâlni lucrul după care am tânjit întreaga noastră viaţă, adică iubirea."

Predicar es un arte. Tan simple y al mismo tiempo tan complejo que, a menos que sea un experimentado predicador, después de una invitación es casi imposible no pensar: ¿sobre qué voy a predicar? Siete Columnas para un Cristianismo Exitoso es, sin duda, un gran aporte, no sólo para líderes de iglesias, sino también para hermanos y hermanas en general que, en varios momentos se sintieron temerosos de aceptar una invitación para predicar, o se quedaron con duda sobre el tema a ser elegido. El predicador(a) podrá no sólo tener sermones desarrollados a su disposición, sino también aprender una forma única de hacer sermones, con el “método de la palabra clave”, una forma de estructura homilética simple y eficaz. Siguiendo un mismo formato, el libro se divide en siete temas de vital importancia en la vida del cristiano.
El propósito del presente libro, además de ofrecer al lector opciones al elegir un sermón para ser predicado, es que el predicador tenga a la mano sermones bien estructurados y aplicados a la realidad de la iglesia del siglo XXI. Otro objetivo es brindar temas de gran importancia para el crecimiento y reavivamiento espiritual, tanto del predicador como de los oyentes. Al estudiar un sermón, el predicador podrá darse cuenta que la predicación sin duda es un arte en sí mismo, pues cada sermón está didácticamente subdividido en partes y cada parte contiene su aplicación, facilitando la comprensión y asimilación del mensaje predicado.
Si predicar es un arte, ¿qué decir de escribir sermones para que sean predicados? Siete Columnas para un Cristianismo Exitoso es un esfuerzo conjunto de los estudiantes de Homilética del 5º semestre de la Facultad de Teología, en la Universidad Adventista de Bolivia (UAB), que durante un agitado semestre de estudio, se esforzaron por disponer a la iglesia sermones inspiradores y Cristo céntricos.
Estamos muy agradecidos a Dios por este primer trabajo que como curso realizamos. Sabemos que sin Él, nada de lo que se hizo habría sido hecho (Jn. 1:3). Recomendamos este libro a todos los hermanos y hermanas predicadores de la Palabra y deseamos que, a través de estos sermones, el Espíritu Santo reavive vidas, transforme almas y convierta corazones.

Sermons, one of the best-preserved genres of early Christian literature, circulated widely in late antiquity within biblical commentaries, catenae, and conciliar acts. But in the Middle Ages, homiliaries – sermon collections ordered according to the liturgical year – became the dominant medium for their transmission. The earliest examples come from North Africa and Gaul in the fifth or sixth century. Fully fledged homiliaries are not attested in the Greek- or Syriac-speaking East until the eighth century. This article examines three sixth- or seventh-century Syriac manuscripts which form the earliest known efforts to organize Syriac sermons around the liturgical year. Two manuscripts (British Library, Add. 14587; Vatican Library, Sir. 109) feature homilies by the Syriac preacher Jacob of Serugh related to six major feast days. A third manuscript (British Library, Add. 17181) contains short addresses for the abbot of a monastery to speak at various occasions and anonymous sets of homilies that follow the order of liturgical feasts. These manuscripts reveal competing tendencies. The anonymity of the homilies in British Library, Add. 17181 emphasizes the practical reasons for the organization of homilies. The other two manuscripts, by way of contrast, take care to name the author and reveal the importance assigned to preserving the works of prominent figures. This article argues that these three manuscripts demonstrate that Syriac literary communities engaged in practices of collecting sermons that reflect broader trends in the organization of knowledge as evidenced by other homiliaries.

Inoltre di questi testi si offre un’indagine statistica relativa alla frequenza dei singoli lemmi e delle sequenze di due tre quattro e cinque lemmi, da cui potranno scaturire nuovi spunti per ulteriori ricerche.

My homilies for the six Sundays of the Easter Season, Ascension Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi Sunday, with titles: Mystical Death and Resurrection (1st Sunday of Easter), Thomas(2nd Sunday of Easter), Secret in Catching Fish (3rd Sunday of Easter), Good Shepherd (4th Sunday of Easter), New Commandment (5th Sunday of Easter), Peace in the New Jerusalem (6th Sunday of Easter), Ascension Sunday, Receive the Holy Spirit (Pentecost Sunday), “What is Truth?” (Trinity Sunday), and “Feed the Yourselves” (Corpus Christi Sunday).

Research into the Armenian reception of the Syriac non-Chalcedonian poet-theologian Jacob of Serugh (c. 451-521) and his writings is still in its infancy. At least fourteen of Jacob’s prose and verse homilies, possibly as many as twenty-five, as well as his Life of Daniel of Galash were translated into Armenian. This article constitutes the first look at one of the newest additions to the corpus, a previously unknown Armenian translation of Jacob’s mēmrā on the Five Talents in which Jacob expounds on the parable from Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 19:12-27. Unfortunately, all that remains of this translation is the invocational prayer, preserved in four manuscripts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: Jerusalem, Armenian Patriarchate 1499, Yerevan, Matenadaran 2103, Yerevan, Matenadaran 2291, and New Julfa, Monastery of the All-Saviour 295. In this article, using the testimony of three of these four manuscripts, the author analyses the translation techniques applied to this text, presumably by two translators, one Syriac and one Armenian, who were active during the Cilician period (twelfth-thirteenth century). What emerges from this analysis is a conflict between two approaches: on the one hand an intention to stay as closely as possible to the original text and to Jacob’s vocabulary, and on the other hand a tendency to thoroughly rewrite parts of the text for an Armenian audience.

Le psaume 142 se prête particulièrement à fonder une prédication en milieu fermé : David est réfugié dans la grotte d’Adoullam pour échapper à la haine de Saül, mais il lui faut bien en sortir – ce refuge finit par prendre l’allure d’une prison.
Ésaïe 40,1-5, un texte privilégié de la période de l’Avent pour l’espérance qui se lève. Le regard se concentre ici plus particulièrement sur la question de la faute et de la peine.
Marc 8,11-13 envisage la problématique du miracle et du signe, toujours à nouveau réclamés pour croire en l’agir de Dieu.
Luc 13,1-9 aborde la culpabilité et l’espoir de Dieu vis-à-vis des êtres humains : la conversion reste un possible pour quiconque veut vivre en dépassant le passé.

Voici la parole adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Éternel, la dixième année du règne de Sédécias sur Juda, qui était aussi la dix-huitième année du règne de Nebucadnetsar. L'armée du roi de Babylone faisait alors le siège de Jérusalem et le prophète Jérémie était enfermé dans la cour de la prison qui se trouvait dans le palais du roi de Juda. Sédécias, roi de Juda, l'avait fait enfermer en lui adressant ce reproche : « Pourquoi prophétises-tu comme tu le fais ? En effet, tu affirmes : "Voici ce que dit l'Éternel : Je vais livrer cette ville entre les mains du roi de Babylone et il s'en emparera. Sédécias, roi de Juda, n'échappera pas aux Babyloniens, mais il est certain qu'il sera livré ent re les mains du roi de Babylone, il devra lui parler en face et le voir de ses yeux. Nebucadnetsar emmènera Sédécias à Babylone où il restera jusqu'à ce que je m'occupe de lui, déclare l'Éternel. Si vous combattez les Babyloniens, vous n'aurez aucun succès." » Jérémie dit : « Voici la parole que l'Éternel m'a adressée : "Hanameel, le fils de ton oncle Shallum, va venir te trouver pour te demander d'acheter son champ qui se trouve à Anathoth, car tu as un droit de rachat pour l'acquérir." Effectivement, Hanameel, le fils de mon oncle, est venu me trouver dans la cour de la prison, conformément à la parole de l'Éternel, et m'a dit : "Je t'en prie, achète mon champ qui se trouve à Anathoth, dans le pays de Benjamin, car tu as un droit d'héritage et de rachat. Achète-le donc !" J'ai alors su que c'était bien une parole de l'Éternel. J'ai donc acheté le champ de Hanameel, le fils de mon oncle, qui est à Anathoth, et je lui ai pesé l'argent, soit 17 pièces d'argent. [...] « Après avoir remis le contrat de vente à Baruc, fils de Nérija, j'ai adressé cette prière à l'Éternel : "Ah ! Seigneur Éternel, c'est toi qui as fait le ciel et la terre par ta grande puissance et ta force. Rien n'est trop difficile pour toi. Tu fais preuve de bonté jusqu'à la millième génération et tu fais payer la faute des pères à leurs enfants après eux. Tu es le Dieu grand et puissant qui as pour nom l'Éternel, le maître de l'univers. Tu es un excellent conseiller, généreux dans ton activité, toi qui examines toutes les voies des hu mains pour traiter chacun conformément à sa conduite, en fonction de ses agissements. St Andrew the Apostle, seldom cited in the Canonical Gospels, is the main character of a large apocryphal tradition that probably spreads from his topic image as a former fisherman. A recent critical approach by MacDonald even considers the second-century apocryphal books Acta Andreae and Acta Andreae et Mathiae as rewritings of Homer’s epic, with St. Andrew playing the part of a Christian Ulysses (and sometimes of a Christian Socrates). This interpretation has been hardly accepted as a whole, but there is no doubt that St Andrew soon became a legendary character, hero of bizarre adventures of Hellenistic taste. In this paper, I discuss the tradition that gave life to the corpus of Old English homilies related to the cult of St Andrew, focusing on the image of the sea as a common background motif.
The apocryphal tradition on St Andrew left some important traces in the body of Old English vernacular prose. Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, 198, ff. 286-394v preserves an Old English rendition of the Acta Andreae et Mathiae. A close analogue to the CCCC 198 text is found in one of the Blickling Homilies (Morris XIX/Kelly XVIII). The CCCC 198 and the Blickling texts are clearly related, presumably descending from a common antecedent. The same supposed antecedent could have been the main source for Andreas, which develops the same plot as the CCCC 198 and Blickling texts into a heroic context.
The corpus of Old English hagiography also transmits a different view. Ælfric’s homily on St Andrew (CH I.xxxviii) focuses on the Nativity of the Apostle and on his martyrdom. Ælfric probably did not find the ‘marvellous’ element much fitting to his taste, but his account of Andrew’s martyrdom preserves some suggestions of the early apocryphal tradition of the Acta Andreae, especially in the ‘Socratic’ dialogue between the saint and his tormentor Ægeas.
A further trace of the cult of St Andrew can be found in one of the twelfth-century Trinity Homilies preserved in Cambridge, Trinity College, B. 14. 52. Trinity Homily XXIX is an exegetical sermon; the Trinity homilist takes the episode of the ‘forsake of the nets’ as a starting point for a large sermon on the traditional symbolical oppositions between Land and Sea and the death of the Righteous and the death of the Wicked.

The Old Church Slavonic translation of John Chrysostom’s commentaries on Acts of the Apostles (CPG 4426) is attested in 18 ethica and fragments included in the Old Bulgarian collection Zlatostruy from the early 10th-century Preslav. The Slavonic homilies have many peculiarities in common suggesting that they were translated together presumably by one translator. One of their common features is the frequent use of double translations (Doppelübersetzungen). In the article, nearly half of the 90 examples in 10 homilies are examined and divided into four groups – proper double translations, complementary double translations, synonyms, and contextual synonyms. The study shows that in several cases the Slavonic translation is notably consistent and repetitive, but more often it aims at variety and clarity. The examples from the Zlatostruy homilies on Acts are compared to other Old Church Slavonic translations (e.g. to the works of John the Exarch and to other homilies from Zlatostruy), but the similarities are not sufficient for identifying the anonymous translator(s). The use of doublets in the examined texts is viewed both as a linguistic device for a faithful translation and as a stylistic feature typical for the translator of these homilies. However, this phenomenon is attested in many other medieval literary traditions, which makes the Zlatostruy homilies part of a larger textual tradition.

Augustine’s sermons 53 and 53A deal with the beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5). These texts are two different sermons with different emphases, preached on two separate instances for different occasions. In both sermons, Augustine briefly addresses all the beatitudes, and then singles out one in particular for further discussion. The beatitude selected is then extensively analysed in both sermons in a part that has its own structure. Because the existing, mainly content-oriented division into chapters in Lambot’s edition (CCSL Est Ag 53 (2018) 119-147 * Augustinian Institute, Jacobskerkhof 2, NL – 3511 BL Utrecht 41) –in 16 and 14 chapters respectively– makes it difficult to identify the rhetorical arrangement of the sermons, the texts have now been examined on the basis of a new method, which does not initially focus on content but on form. Les Églises ne peuvent se décharger de la tâche d’aider les nécessiteux.
Ces textes sont des outils de réflexion pour les Églises qui veulent vivre leur témoignage dans une perspective de développement holistique.

Don Bosco’s Marian sermon notes
This is a critical edition of the seven sets of hand written sermon notes by Don Bosco preserved in the ASC and prepared on the occasion of some Marian feasts.  Only two of them are dated (3 June 1842 and 11 September 1864). On the basis of the handwriting. two others can be attributed to the early years of his priestly ministry, while the remaining ones certainly belong to his more mature years. In spite of their brevity these manuscripts contain some of the points that are characteristic of Don Bosco’s Marian teaching in harmony with the piety of his times: Mary is the Mother of God and our Mother; the “glories of Mary” foreshadowed in Biblical symbolism had been celebrated by the Fathers of the the Church and by Christian Nations of all times; Mary has a specific mission in relation to eternal salvation; She is the powerful protector of the Church and the firm support of Christians in life and in death; genuine Marian devotion is always accompanied by virtuous and holy behaviour and is expressed in simple acts of devotion.

Nonostante la concisione, questi manoscritti contengono alcuni dei punti che caratterizzano il magistero mariano di don Bosco, in sintonia con la pietà del suo tempo: Maria è madre di Dio e madre nostra; le “glorie di Maria”, adombrate nei simboli biblici, sono state celebrate dai Padri della Chiesa e dalle nazioni cristiane in ogni tempo; Maria ha una missione specifica in ordine alla salvezza eterna; Ella è potente presidio della Chiesa ed è valido sostegno dei cristiani in vita e in morte; la vera devozione mariana è sempre accompagnata da un comportamento virtuoso e santo e si esprime in semplici atti di culto.

I have demonstrated in a series of articles that it is possible to uncover the arrangement of Augustine's Nativity sermons in a different manner than by looking at the traditional rhetorical rules. Thus the parts into which the texts of these sermons are divided can be identified by using a twofold method, in which the results of an analysis of the use of language (e.g. changes in sentence type, the use of various kinds of particles and unusual word and constituent order, often indicative of poetic use of language) and the results of an analysis of the use of Scripture (changes in quoted or referenced verses or clusters of verses from Scripture) support each other. On the basis of this twofold method, which is comparatively easy to apply and verify, it has been possible to determine divisions of sermons into four, three and five parts. The division into four parts (in ss. 186 and 187) corresponds to the division which Augustine himself proposes in the fourth book of doctr.chr. He says nothing about the divisions into three and five parts, but the sermons in which these are used appear chaotic and difficult to understand if the arrangement is not recognized. Using the twofold method it has been possible to determine that ss. 189 and 194 consist of five parts. This means that-despite marked differences in composition-they have the same coherent structure and a clear argument, representing a strategy in which Augustine moves from the introduction, through a preparation for a didactic moment, to this didactic moment itself, followed by a supporting part and, finally, a conclusion.
