The extraction and determination of chlorinated biphenyls (CBs) in soils and solid wastes is an ongoing subject of study. This is an overview article that compares the microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) techniques. The extraction of CBs by ASE has been optimised taking into account the variation of pressure, temperature and extraction time by means of experimental design and the Simplex approach. The recoveries obtained under the optimum conditions are compared and discussed with those obtained from MAE and Soxhlet extractions.

Visual LinProg is an educational tool that solves Linear Problems (LPs) using animation and visualization techniques. The core of the proposed software includes the well-known class of simplex type algorithms. This tool is a Web-based software and hence platform independent. Visual LinProg was initially invented to be used in mathematical programming courses to supplement the teaching. The user-student can solve his own general LPs, view the solution process step-by-step and import or export his own examples in an easy way to read format. The solution process is covered scholastically through textual information and also the necessary steps from the pseudo code are depicted using multiple views. In this paper we describe Visual LinProg and how it is used in educational purposes. Finally, we present an evaluation of the proposed educational tool.

Abstract In this paper, an investigation of the behavior of a recently defined hybrid algorithm for continuous variables electromagnetic optimization problems is presented. This algorithm makes use of the nonlinear simplex method as a principal optimizator, and a greedy genetic algorithm to explore the search space. The algorithm is greatly affected by the tuning of some parameters. Referring to a solenoids system optimal design problem, a detailed comparison of performances obtained implementing a metaheuristic tuning is presented

A new binder system has been developed which is based on manihot esculenta and cement. The new binder system is expected to be an alternative to Urea formaldehyde furfuryl alcohol binder system commonly used in the foundry for core making; it is a cold setting binder system. The cost factor is one of the reasons for the development of this new binder system, therefore LP simplex method model was used in the determination of the minimized cost using this newly developed binder system for core making. The result showed that the cost was $1.57/1kg of core mixture as against $5 for using urea formaldehyde furfuryl alcohol binder system. The work also revealed that strict adherence to the compositional constraints is very important since any change in either of the constraints would lead to a change in the total cost of producing the core mixture and consequently too, a change in the properties of the cores produced using the core mixture.

ABSTRACT Application of a fuzzy logic controller to a class of hydraulically actuated industrial robots is investigated. A simple set of membership functions and rules are described which meets certain control requirements. An off-line routine based on the simplex method is outlined to tune the controller gains for an optimum response. The fuzzy control gains are tuned by minimizing the summation of absolute position errors over step input responses. The fuzzy logic controller is first examined through simulation of a two-link hydraulic robot of the same hydraulic configuration as many industrial manipulators. The controller has positive aspects which cannot be easily achieved by conventional control techniques. These include a fast rise-time and a well maintained damped response. The fuzzy controller is applied to an instrumented Unimate MK-II industrial hydraulic robot. The experimental results are encouraging in that the best performing control gains are found for different links with a reasonable number of trials and produce step responses with fast response and few oscillations at the set point. The controller demonstrates robustness

The analysis of modal and normative composition of sedimentary rocks is widely used for studying their sources and tectonic settings. The normative calculation of the mineral composition of rocks in this study is formulated as a linear programming problem and is solved by means of the simplex method. This enables both simultaneous and successive subtraction of a set of basic minerals from a rock sample represented by its chemical composition {SiO2...LOI}. Such an approach provides a more exact calculation of the contribution of basic minerals in the rock. This mathematical approach is used to study two representative sets of sandstones and fine-grained rocks from a Meso- to Neoproterozoic marginal basin of southeastern Siberia (Uchur–Maya region, Yakutia) and a Pennsylvanian-Lower Permian uplifted continental block in Colorado, USA. The calculated normative mineral compositions of the Siberian sandstones are consistent with the observed modal compositions. These sandstones vary from K- Feldspar rich arkoses at the base of the sequence (the Uchur Group, lower Riphean) to quartz arenites or lithic sandstones and wacke in transgressive successions of the middle-upper Riphean. Arkoses and quartz arenites are dominant in Meso- to Neoproterozoic Siberia. These samples represent craton interior uplifted basement and quartzose, recycled orogen provenance of a stable craton in Rodinia. There are higher but consistent discrepancies between the calculated and observed compositions for the Pennsylvanian to Lower-Permian arkoses and quartz arenites (Sangre de Cristo, Belden, and Maroon Formations). The differences between the predicted and observed mineralogy may be due to uncertainties in the modes in the matrix and cement of the sandstones. This normative program should supplement modal calculations and provide better genetic constructions, especially in case of matrix-rich sandstones.

This paper aims for profit optimization of an Ethiopian chemical company located in Adama (Ethiopia) using linear programming model. Particularly, our present study brings out clearly the necessity of using quantitative techniques for utilization in Ethiopian company; a factory situated within Adama about 90 kms. from Addis Ababa (Capital of Ethiopia). The first step comprises data generation. A questionnaire is prepared and circulated amongst company staff both executive and technical to determine the production, sales and profit during a few months of 2014. The profits varied considerably owing to subjective approach. It was established that the decisions are undertaken by experienced people without use of quantitative people and quantitative method. Whole approach applied here is seemingly subjective. A theoretical perspective undertaken for the present study is review of various different applications of linear programming. The characteristics of base assumptions of linear programming and its advantages and disadvantages towards establishing its need for optimization are briefly outlined in terms of its application to the factory. Survey data is analyzed to determine the style of decision making and the problem is defined. An objective function is created in terms of decision variables of production, sales and profit over a period of time using the quantitatively available data of these parameters. A linear programming model for company is developed for profit optimization. The model equations with adequate restraints taking into account manufacturing limitations are solved using MS-Excel solver. Finally, some conclusive observations have been drawn and recommendations have been suggested.

In this paper we consider application of linear programming in solving optimization problems with constraints. We used the simplex method for finding a maximum of an objective function. This method is applied to a real example. We used the “linprog” function in MatLab for problem solving. We have shown, how to apply simplex method on a real world problem, and to solve it using linear programming. Finally we investigate the complexity of the method via variation of the computer time versus the number of control variables.

Biometric system performance can be improved by means of data fusion. Several kinds of information can be fused in order to obtain a more accurate classification (identification or verification) of an input sample. In this paper we present a method for computing the weights in a weighted sum fusion for score combinations, by means of a likelihood model. The maximum likelihood estimation is set as a linear programming problem. The scores are derived from a GMM classifier working on different feature extraction techniques. Our experimental results assessed the robustness of the system in front changes on time (different sessions) and robustness in front of changes of microphone. The improvements obtained were significantly better (error bars of two standard deviations) than a uniform weighted sum or a uniform weighted product or the best single classifier. The proposed method scales computationally with the number of scores to be fusioned as the simplex method for linear programming.

Water is a rare and vital natural resource for all biological phenomena and human activities that continuously is needed to be known at any time and place. Taking into the burgeoning growth of population and consequently increasing human needs, the limitation of water resources is a considerable challenge for human. Moreover, asymmetrical distribution of rain time and location in most countries has caused that the
water resources management and programming be considered. In order to resolve this problem, researchers are trying to use some techniques in relation with programming
and management for a long time. Most of practical and applied problems can be modeled as a linear programming problem regarding all intrinsic complexities. The mentioned reason and also presence of different solving software of linear programming problems have caused that linear programming be used as one of the most practical methods in the field of dam operation for years. In this research, we introduce
optimal operation problems of reservoirs by using linear programming techniques and discuss about them. Also, objective and multi objective models were introduced by
using some questions. Finally, some popular methods in the field of modeling such problems are introduced.

In this paper, we generalize the concept of sensitivity analysis in fuzzy number linear programming (FLNP) problems by applying fuzzy simplex algorithms and using the general linear ranking functions on fuzzy numbers. The purpose of sensitivity analysis is to determine changes in the optimal solution of FNLP problem resulting from changes in the data. If the change affects the optimality of the basis, we perform primal pivots to achieve optimality by use of the fuzzy primal simplex method. Whenever the change destroys the feasibility of the optimal basis, we perform dual pivots to achieve feasibility by use of the fuzzy dual simplex method.

Simplex Method of Linear Programming is a repetitive optimizing technique to determine the possible output in order to maximize a profit in a business plan. A good foundation in Mathematics is the main tool in getting the solution. Many papers aimed to find out the Mathematics performance and the factors affecting the learner's performance and yet this problem remained unsolved. The objective of this paper is to analyze the common errors committed by the Second Year Bachelor of Science in Accountancy students at the University of Northern Philippines. The scores of the written examination of the respondents were interpreted using error analysis. It was found out that the common errors are: basic application of the operations of numbers, determining the entering variable, miscopied values, incomplete variables in the final answer, and unfinished solution. These errors maybe due to ignorance to the rules in applying the simplex method. The study recommends giving higher percentage to basic operations in the total score of the written examination of students, Furthermore, the College should give seminars to the Accountancy students on how to manage their time in solving Mathematical problems.
