Vernacular Architecture

This study presents the results of field research conducted at the households of Metsovo, one of the most important mountain settlements of Greece. The main objective is to highlight the distinct role of the settlement’s traditional architecture, as a cultural good, at the existing pattern of development in the region. More specifically, the aim of the study is to evaluate the economic value of settlement’s traditional architecture, using the environmental economics theoretical background and analytical techniques. For the above purpose, the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) is applied. The method is based on the construction of a hypothetical market, in order to measure respondents’ willingness to pay or to accept compensation (Willingness To Pay - WTP or Willingness To Accept - WTA) for changes in the quality and / or quantity of non-tradable goods and services using appropriately structured questionnaires
In this particular case, the CVM analysis involved a hypothetical scenario of founding an institution for the protection of the vernacular architecture of Metsovo. Respondents were asked if they were willing to pay an annual voluntary contribution to the institution for supporting its purpose. The survey involved a random sample of 263 residents of Metsovo. The campaign took place in June and July 2009 and the response rate was about 50%. The results of the study show that vernacular architecture holds a significant economic value, which is reflected to the voluntary payment of Metsovo households. Using parametric and non-parametric models the annual voluntary contribution was estimated at 90,000 €. Finally, the paper concludes with some interesting remarks concerning the general characteristics and the importance of vernacular architecture preservation.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this report is to provide results of archaeological test excavation of two locations. The first is the Ranch House at Warner's Ranch, also called the Warner-Carrillo Ranch House, a national historic landmark located in eastern San Diego County about 1 mile east of the intersection of Highways 79 and S2 (San Felipe Road). The second is the site of Jonathan T. Warner’s House and Store located directly to the north of the Ranch House on the northern edge of Buena Vista Valley. Excavations at the Ranch House at Warner’s Ranch revealed the long history of the building’s evolution in several features encountered during the investigation. The foundations document a building that evolved over a period of time. In addition to wall foundations, interior excavations revealed remains of early floors and surfaces. It seems that during the Vail Ranch period beginning in 1888, the building was rebuilt as a family home for the company's foremen and achieved its current configuration and appearance. It seems that such improvements as wooden floors, stone facings on the base of the east and west wall, and board and batten siding along the south and west sides of the south wing were part of a general rehabilitation of the building that can be documented by its appearance in photographs taken during the late 19th and early 20th century. Remains at the Jonathan T. Warner’s House and Store Site represent a large complex of buildings. Nine features were ultimately identified through survey and excavation. Due to the limited amount of testing, conclusions are tentative and somewhat ambiguous. Originally built and occupied by J.T. Warner and his family, the site appears to have been reoccupied after Warner abandoned it following its destruction by the Indians in 1851. This conclusion is based on the discovery of two packed earthen floors in the ruins of one building, and the deposition of artifacts manufactured after 1851 in a refuse sheet deposit. As a result of this apparent reoccupation, more work is necessary before it can be determined what parts of the complex originated with Warner and what are the results of later rebuilding. The artifact assemblage stands out from other sites in several aspects. It is the lowest in consumer items. The collection, on the other hand, is one of the highest for munitions. การวิจัยเรื่อง “ปัจจัยในการตั้งถิ่นฐาน และพลวัติของสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่นเรือนแพชุมชนพหุวัฒนธรรม: ชุมชนแพสะพานรันตี ต.ไล่โว่ อ.สังขละบุรี จ.กาญจนบุรี” มุ่งศึกษาในประเด็นเรื่อง ปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อการตั้งถิ่นฐานลักษณะทางสถาปัตยกรรม และความเปลี่ยนแปลงลักษณะของสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่นซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นเรือนแพ ในลักษณะชุมชนแบบ “พหุวัฒนธรรม (Cultural pluralism)” อันประกอบไปด้วยกลุ่มชาวไทยอีสาน มอญ ลาว2 กะเหรี่ยง และพม่า ซึ่งมีทั้งลักษณะร่วมและต่างทางวัฒนธรรมจากการศึกษาข้อมูลทางประวัติศาสตร์ผนวกกับการลงพื้นที่สำรวจภาคสนาม พบว่า ในประเด็นเรื่องปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อการตั้งถิ่นฐานของชุมชนชาวแพนั้นเกิดขึ้น จากแรงขับดันจากถิ่นฐานเดิม อีกทั้งยังมีแรงจูงใจในการอพยพมาตั้งถิ่นฐานในพื้นที่ใหม่ คือกลุ่ม คนไทยอีสานอพยพเนื่องด้วยการแสวงหาแหล่ง ทำประมงที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ ส่วนกลุ่มที่มีกำเนิดอยู่ในพม่าอพยพมาเนื่องด้วยระบบการปกครองของพม่าที่ไม่ให้ความสำคัญกับชนกลุ่มน้อย ส่วนลักษณะทางสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่นของเรือนแพ พบว่าเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมที่มีความสอดรับกับสภาพแวดล้อม วิถีชีวิต ศาสนา และความเชื่อของคนในชุมชน แต่เมื่อมีปัจจัยภายนอกอันประกอบด้วย ความเปลี่ยนแปลงของสิ่งแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติและอิทธิพลของเขื่อนวชิราลงกรณ การถือสัญชาติ และการเข้ามาของวัสดุสมัยใหม่เข้ามากระทำต่อชุมชน จึงส่งผลให้ลักษณะทางสถาปัตยกรรมของเรือนแพมีความเปลี่ยนแปลง

The purposes of this research were to study the factors of the settlement, architectural features and change in vernacular architecture in the form of raft house, under the cultural pluralism of the residents: Thai E-san group, Mon, Laotian, Karen people and Burmese. There are both similar and different points of culture among them.
According to historical information and surveys, it was found that 1) the factors in setting down of people living in raft houses are pressure from their former home town and motivation for immigrating: Thai E-San group searches for the new abundant source for fishing while Burmese emigrants are discontented with the policy on ignoring the minority by Burmese government 2) vernacular architecture in the form of raft house matches surroundings, lifestyle, religion and belief of villagers. However, external factors like change of the environment, Vajiralongkorn Dam, difficulties of being alien and modern materials, make changes to the features of this vernacular architecture.

This is an overview about the cooperation my university had with the ministry of Heritage and culture about the documentation of four vernacular settlements in Oman. This is an award-winning  research that involved a large number of students. A more detailed publication will follow.

This book documents an indigenous building technique called the kath-khuni construction prevalent in Himachal Pradesh, India. The relative isolation of the hills and the demanding environment fostered development and persistence of distinctive prathaa, i.e., traditions practiced for centuries. These building practices reflect synthesis of material and environmental constraints with social and cultural beliefs and rituals. This book illustrates the role of indigenous building traditions in a dual sense: architecture as an outcome of specific material assemblies to fulfil specific functional purposes and architecture as a process to bind together people, places and resources in order to sustain particular cultural norms, beliefs and values.

“จังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม” เป็นเมืองที่รุ่มรวยด้วยฐานทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ อันเนื่องมาจากความหลากหลายของระบบนิเวศ ส่งผลให้ผู้คนเข้ามาตั้งถิ่นฐานโดยมีวิถีชีวิตที่แตกต่างแต่สอดคล้องกับระบบนิเวศตามแต่ที่ตั้งถิ่นฐานนั้น นอกจากนี้ ยังมีการตั้งถิ่นฐานของกลุ่มคนต่างวัฒนธรรม ได้แก่ คนไทย คนมอญ และคนจีน ซึ่งมีการส่งวัฒนธรรมข้ามกัน จนเกิดเป็นกลุ่มสังคมที่มีความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรม ในบทความชิ้นนี้ได้ศึกษาความหลากหลายดังที่กล่าวมาแล้วผ่าน “เรือนพื้นถิ่นทรงไทย” ภายใต้กรอบคำถามว่า “ภายใต้บริบทที่มีความหลากหลายทางนิเวศวัฒนธรรมและชาติพันธุ์นั้น ได้ส่งผลให้เกิดความหลากหลายของเรือนพื้นถิ่นทรงไทยในสมุทรสงครามอย่างไร”
ผลการศึกษาพบว่า เรือนพื้นถิ่นทรงไทยมีความแตกต่างกันในแต่ละกลุ่มอาชีพทั้งรูปแบบ การวางผัง ผังบริเวณ และการใช้ที่ว่างภายใน กล่าวได้ว่าเรือนพื้นถิ่นทรงไทยมีการปรับตัว ให้สอดคล้องกับวิถีการดำเนินชีวิตที่สัมพันธ์กับสภาพแวดล้อมความหลากหลายของเรือนพื้นถิ่นทรงไทยยังเป็นผลลัพธ์จากความแตกต่างกันทางชาติพันธุ์อีกด้วย โดยแต่ละกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ยังคงสอดแทรกอัตลักษณ์ของกลุ่มตนไว้ได้แก่ ทิศทางการวางตัวเรือน และการวางผังพื้นที่ว่างภายในเรือน แสดงให้เห็นถึงการรักษาวัฒนธรรมดั้งเดิมอันเป็นวัฒนธรรมเฉพาะของตนควบคู่ไปกับการรับวัฒนธรรมการปลูกสร้างบ้านแบบเรือนพื้นถิ่นทรงไทย

Proponents of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the United Kingdom put William Morris’s artistic and social ideals into practice by emphasizing a return to handcraft and freedom of individual creative expression, regional or local design and materials, a repudiation of industrial manufacturing, and socioeconomic justice both through production and consumption of well-made, beautiful goods. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, U.K. architects became strongly influenced by the aesthetics of the Arts and Crafts Movement, yet primarily limited its expression to large homes for wealthy owners—embracing most of Morris’s artistic ideals, yet far from his egalitarian vision. While some U.S. architects build grand homes inspired by their U.K. predecessors, the movement focused more on the Craftsman aesthetic of Gustav Stickley and the bungalow-style home, primarily in modest, single-family homes for working- and middle-class residents. This paper argues that while both U.S. and U.K. architects valued individual craftsmanship and local materials, in the United States multi-building developments and thousands of partially prefabricated Craftsman-style homes created an American vernacular style that provided improved living conditions for a wide economic cross-section of society. In embracing modern technological production and distribution, American Arts and Crafts architecture moved away from the pure ideals of craftsmanship yet achieved more of the goals of style and comfort for all.

Abstract in English
This thesis addresses the Danish architectural association Bedre Byggeskik (1915-1965) (an approximate translation could be ‘Better Building Practise’), whose activities were primarily focused on the rural areas in Denmark. The legacy of the association is charac-terised by an idea of skilful craftsmanship in good and ‘honest’ building materials, as well as a profound consideration of the sensuous material and textural effects in architecture (in Danish called stoflighed). The thesis wishes to concretise these effects and therefore ex-plores them as they appear in Bedre Byggeskik’s architectural teachings and designs. This is done partly by analysing the writings of the association and partly by analysing the sen-suous effects of materials, textures and surfaces as they appear in three selected exemplary houses. The three houses are all located in West Zealand, Denmark and designed by architect Marius Pedersen – his own house from 1929 (now interior museum of Bedre Byggeskik) located in Holbæk and two houses on smallholdings set up in Odsherred in 1937.
In a scientific context the sensuous effects of the architectural surface and materiality are difficult to grip and communicate or even to convey. Therefore the thesis investigates ways of getting the houses – with their materiality, texture and surface qualities – to stand as informants in their own right. The sensuous effects of the building materials and architectural elements are ad- dressed and represented through linguistic ‘condensations of atmosphere’, that calls for bodily and affective readings in an (otherwise) academic framing.
The investigation exemplifies how modern building materials and ar- chitectural elements have taken place in the houses of Bedre Byggeskik, as a

result of the changed way of life of the rural population. With the perspective given by the theory of atmosphere, the thesis argues that the materials, surfaces and textures of architecture has formative properties, as their atmospheric qualities – their ‘ecstasy’ – influence our moods and hence the attitude towards ourselves and our surroundings. In continuation hereof the thesis shows how Bedre Byggeskik’s educational effort aimed at creating surroundings, where certain dispositions could thrive among the rural population. Thus the thesis displays Bedre Byggeskik as a forum for exchange between a rural mentality and an upcoming welfare state mentality, as well as between a vernacular architecture and an academic architecture.

In this thesis, through the existing literature, the effects of the interaction between humanbeings and the environment upon space are examined. Under the title ?Spatial Organization?,the concepts of culture-occupant relationship and privacy are discussed. As a result of theresearch conducted, it is concluded that built environment is a product of the clashes betweenstructure and space, and structure and occupant. In order to examine this argument, someanonymous settlements bearing the simplest examples of structure-space and structureoccupantrelationships are mentioned and the continuity of the transfer of structure in thesesettlements is emphasized. It is also put forward that this continuity is affected in anonymoussettlements where cultural diversity and different techniques of space production co-exist.Through a fieldwork carried out in Yahşibey settlement using space syntax technique, factorsthat influence spatial continuity in culturally diverse places are scrutinized. The analyses ofthe space syntax application are discussed using the concept of privacy, and are associatedwith the cultural diversity of the occupants. Taking the buildings in Yahşibey settlement intoaccount, it is argued that groups of structures having similar relationships with space maintainspatial continuity outside the structure, and that groups of structures having diverserelationships with space break the spatial continuity inside the structure.

The paper presents an outline of the development of external surface treatments of the walls of rural and small-town individual housing construction in the easternmost region of Slovakia, in Zemplín. Like the houses themselves, their facades have undergone a dynamic development during the 20th century, from ancient clay greases throught the spread of lime plasters with a stylized plastic facade, modernist abstract structures, a postmodern expansion of decorativeness, moderate unitary uniformity similar to the initial state, till the attempts to "return to nature". The information base of the paper are mainly plasters itself. At the time of their inception, they were not researched and the author could not capture any master plasterer active at the end of the 1960s, when their development culminated. Today, these remarkable finishes of vernacular dwellings throughout the last century have been massively abolished under the unscrupulous wave of thermal insulation, and with them evidence of the craftsmanship, fantasy and aesthetic taste of generations of our immediate ancestors disappears.

Kajang Padati House is an identity of vernacular architecture and development of Minangkabau Traditional House specifically located in West Sumatra coastal area. Intangible and tangible aspects of Kajang Padati House are the result of cultural assimilation process from the past which now its existence has reduced. The coastal communities in Padang are known as open minded people and receptive to new cultures. These, directly and indirectly, occur various architectural changes in Kajang Padati House. This is a descriptive research using a qualitative method. The locus of the research is Kajang Padati House in Padang, West Sumatra Province. The result of this study shows Kajang Padati's typology in Padang coastal areas. This study also finds that meanings of space in Kajang Padati have changed related to the increasing activity within the house, which then led to the establishment of a new space.

Traditional house of Bugis Makassar replica concept macro cosmos in which the house is divided into three namely the top world, the middle world and under world (rakkeang, ele bola, awabola). According to the development of traditional architecture, the house has gradually changed form and function. Rakkeang function in traditional houses at Bugis Makassar has been lost, the form and function under the house has undergone a change, it is due to the demands of necessity.

The definition of vernacular architecture can vary from “indigenous architecture” to “primitive architecture”, to “ethnic architecture” and even to “anonymous architecture”. However, on academic grounds, the definition “any process of environment definition without employment of professional designer; neither a formal architect nor an uneducated craftsman” is preferred. Vernacular architecture research must evaluate abstract factors affecting the design (“the climate”, “the economy”, and “the culture”; respectively) as the inputs and the concrete results of the design (“the material”, “the technique”, and “the form”; again respectively) as the outputs. Climate, in this sense, is the genesis term that needs to be discussed first. The planet Earth has distinct climatic zones and each zone has a unique biome consisting of local flora and fauna. Human, on the other hand, is the only species that spread all corners of the planet before completing biological adaptation. Therefore, people invented some abstract concepts and some tangible features in order to survive. Vernacular architecture is an obvious example of these material culture elements. And economy, mentioned as a major input of vernacular architecture can be evaluated as one of the abstract concepts, in these terms. “Economy”, in formal definition, is the state of a population in terms of the production and consumption of goods and services. However, in terms of vernacular architecture, economy defines how people earn their livings, basically how they gain food. As mentioned, certain climates allow certain endemic lifeforms and people, who spread all climates, introduced several economies according to these endemic species; as hunting (fishing included), gathering, horticulture, and husbandry, and some mixed types. And their architecture adapts that unique lifestyle of the climate, as well. In example, when hunting is the main economy as Great Plains or herding as in Siberian steppes, the architecture should be detachable and mobile. Even economy is not the main decisive factor itself, as there are distinct types of tents in nomadic lifestyle. The aim of this research is therefore to create the link in between the vernacular architecture of different zones and the local economy based on the local climate.

การศึกษาจัดทำ “แผนที่ที่อยู่อาศัยทรงคุณค่าทางวัฒนธรรม และสิ่งแวดล้อมชุมชน ในเขตเทศบาลเมืองสมุทรสงคราม” ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการ การจัดทำแผนพัฒนาที่อยู่อาศัยระดับเมืองและชุมชน จังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม ซึ่งได้รับการสนับสนุนวิจัยจากเทศบาลเมืองสมุทรสงคราม และสนับสนุนกิจกรรมจากศูนย์บริการวิชาการแห่งจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และการเคหะแห่งชาติ โดยทำการศึกษาใน ๑๐ ชุมชนที่มีที่ตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำแม่กลอง คือ ชุมชนวัดใหญ่, ชุมชนซอยวัดหลังบ้าน, ชุมชนวัดเพชรสมุทรวรวิหาร, ชุมชนตลาดแม่กลอง, ชุมชนวัดธรรมนิมิต, ชุมชนบางจะเกร็ง ๑, ๒, ๓-๔, ชุมชนวัดประทุมคณาวาส, ชุมชนสะพาน ๔ -วัดพวงมาลัย ซึ่งคณะผู้ศึกษาได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากชาวชุมชนทั้ง ๑๐ ชุมชนเป็นอย่างดี
การศึกษาวิจัยเพื่อจัดทำแผนที่ที่อยู่อาศัยทางวัฒนธรรม มีความมุ่งหมายเพื่อทราบถึงแหล่งที่ตั้งของมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมที่บรรพบุรุษชาวแม่กลองได้สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นบนความนอบน้อมที่มีต่อผืนดิน และผืนน้ำแห่งลุ่มแม่น้ำแม่กลองแห่งนี้ การศึกษาพบว่า ในชุมชนเก่าแก่ในเขตเทศบาลมีที่อยู่อาศัยทรงคุณค่าทางวัฒนธรรมอยู่เป็นจำนวนมาก รอคอยให้มีการศึกษาเชิงลึก และการวางแนวทางการพัฒนาที่อยู่อาศัยที่อยู่บนฐานของสำนึกในการอนุรักษ์ และมองโลกอย่างเป็นองค์รวมเพื่อพิทักษ์ลมหายใจที่อยู่อาศัยทรงคุณค่าทางวัฒนธรรมให้เป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้ของท้องถิ่น  และผู้สนใจในแง่มุมต่างๆ รวมทั้งทำหน้าที่ทางตรง คือ เป็นที่อยู่อาศัยที่มีประสิทธิภาพ และทำให้ผู้อยู่อาศัยมีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดี อีกทั้งเป็นมิตรต่อสภาพแวดล้อมที่แสนจะเปราะบางของเมืองสมุทรสงคราม เมืองแห่งนิเวศสามน้ำอันมีระบบนิเวศที่ซับซ้อน และอุดมสมบูรณ์แห่งนี้

Vernacularity is a quality or a state of being vernacular. This condition relates closely to authentic or traditional buildings at particular places. In real situations, vernacular architecture comes into being through different socio-cultural dynamics and from any existing building that provides sustainable solutions and sustainable characteristics containing material and immaterial values. The Peranakan houses in Lasem can be included in this category. They can last for generations and facilitate a variety of daily activities across generations with their own values. The varied activities can help identify the unique spatial characters, and create particular experiences. This qualitative study is based on the writer's experience and supported by spatial experience concept by Juhani Pallasmaa. This study sought to provide insights leading to an in-depth understanding of vernacularity through spatial experiences in Peranakan house-Kidang Mas in Lasem. The findings of the study unveiled that the dynamic changes of activities that involve family and non-family members inside the complex of Peranakan house-Kidang Mas is the justification of being vernacular.

In this article, while introducing Kapar, its history, and varieties, we will describe the construction methods of Kapar and the advantages and disadvantages of this vernacular wooden architecture of Iran. This small provisional house, which is made of reed, wood and foliage of palm trees and is usually located in rural areas of Iran, demonstrates a flexible and reasonable way to address human needs. It was observed and concluded that this type of vernacular wooden architecture was created according to the needs of the residents and is adapted to its context and environment. Kapar is climatically suitable for warm and humid regions of Iran. The high speed of construction of Kapar can also be used to build temporary residences at the time of disasters or natural disasters like earthquakes, and even building schools and health centers in the nomadic areas.

Tüm dünyada olduğu gibi Türkiye’de de tehdit altında olan geleneksel mimari mirasın nasıl ayakta tutulacağı konusunun koruma alanında uzmanlaşan tüm disiplinlerin temel sorunu olması, bu kitabın ortaya çıkmasına zemin hazırlamıştır.

Koruma projeleri ile birlikte turizm kavramı da ele alınarak tarihi çevrenin sürdürülebilirliği sağlandığında, Orta Anadolu'nun merkezinde bulunan Keskin'in kültür mirası korunarak gelecek kuşaklara aktarılacaktır.

I 1888 ble et soveloft fra 1300-tallet flyttet fra gården Rolstad i Sør-Fron, Gudbrandsdalen, til Oscar II’s samling på Bygdøy. Vi skal undersøke livsløpet, eller ’biografien’, til Rolstadloftet. Å skrive en gjenstandsbiografi innebærer å låne blikk og begreper fra litteraturanalyse, samtidig som en knytter an til the agentive turn innen samfunns- og kulturanalyse. Ved å oppheve en gjenstand til subjekt med egen biografi, søker vi å forstå hvordan gjenstander ikke bare blir gitt mening, men også selv har effekt. Vi tenker at gjenstanden ikke passivt blir tilskrevet mening, men at den også selv har virkning innenfor de sosiale praksiser den trekkes inn i. Med en biografisk tilnærming kan vi undersøke hvordan relasjoner mellom menneske og ting varierer kulturelt og historisk. บทคัดย่อภาษาไทย
การศึกษาพบว่า กลุ่มเรือนที่ก่อสร้างด้วยอิฐดินดิบและไม้ของชาวไทเหนือในหมู่บ้านหนองเงินมีพัฒนาการด้านเทคนิคก่อสร้างเป็นสัมภาระทางวัฒนธรรมมาจากถิ่นฐานดั้งเดิมซึ่งอยู่ทางตอนใต้ของจีน มาใช้ร่วมกับรูปแบบของเรือนชาวไทเขินซึ่งเป็นเจ้าของพื้นที่มาแต่ก่อน จนเป็นเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว ซึ่งลักษณะองค์ประกอบผังและแผนผังอาคารจะมีลักษณะคล้ายกับเรือนของชาวไทเขินเกือบทุกประการ แต่จะแตกต่างกันตรงที่การวางตำแหน่งห้องนอนหลักของชาวไทเหนือนิยมวางทางฝั่งขวาของเข่งพะลา (หิ้งพระ) และนิยมหันหัวนอนไปทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ในขณะที่เรือนไทเขินมักนิยมวางตำแหน่งห้องนอนทางฝั่งซ้ายของเข่งพะลา และนิยมหันหัวนอนในทางทิศตะวันออก
พัฒนาการของการก่ออิฐร่วมกับไม้ สามารถอธิบายผ่านเกณฑ์อายุของเรือนได้ดังนี้ คือ ในเรือนที่มีอายุการก่อสร้างตั้งแต่ 51 ปีขึ้นไป นิยมก่ออิฐดินดิบเป็นกำแพงรับน้ำหนักร่วมกับโครงสร้างเสาและคานไม้ มักก่อผนังรับน้ำหนักจากพื้นไปถึงผนังชั้นสอง และก่อผนังอิฐปิดล้อมพื้นที่ใต้ถุนเรือนทั้งหมด แต่กรอบอาคารชั้นสองจะแบ่งสัดส่วนของพื้นที่ปิดล้อมด้วยผนังรับน้ำหนักและผนังไม้ในสัดส่วนที่เท่าๆกัน ซึ่งแสดงออกถึงพื้นที่ปิดล้อมในลักษณะโปร่งเบาและหนักแน่นในรูปด้านอาคาร มักสร้างเป็นเรือนขนาดใหญ่ที่รองรับ 2-3 ครอบครัวในหลังเดียวกัน ส่วนในเรือนที่มีอายุการก่อสร้าง 31-50 ปีนั้น จะมีขนาดเรือนที่เล็กลงมา เนื่องจากลูกหลานเริ่มแยกตัวออกไปสร้างเรือนใหม่ แต่ในเรือนที่อายุการก่อสร้างไม่เกิน 30 ปี นิยมสร้างกำแพงรับน้ำหนักเป็นกรอบอาคารล้อมรอบทั้งหมด ในเรือนทุกหลังจะมีแบบแผนโครงสร้างหลังคาตามลักษณะของกลุ่มคนไทในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ที่พัฒนาการรูปแบบทั้งจั่ว-จั่วปั้นหยาไปจนถึงรูปแบบปั้นหยาในช่วงหลัง แต่รูปแบบโครงสร้างของอิฐดินดิบและไม้ ในแต่ละเรือนจะมีอิสระในการวางพื้นที่ปิดล้อมของตนเองตามการใช้สอย ส่วนองค์ประกอบผังจะมีพัฒนาการตามกายภาพของพื้นที่ตั้งและการขยับขยายของขนาดครอบครัว

English Abstract
Houses in Baan Nong Gnern were created by adobe bricks after the first settlement of Tai Nue villagers over a century ago. This poses a question of why Tai Nue villagers in Baan Nong Gnern continues to use adobe brick for their housing construction, while vicinity villages uses timber structures in spite of similar terrain. This poser contributes and leads to the study.
From the result of the study, there are group of houses built from adobe bricks and timber structures in the Baan Nong Gern Village that utilizes the brick bearing construction technique. This technique was developed from the previous habitants in southern China. In merging with the previous residents of the village known as the “Tai Khun”, the new habitants became the “Tai Nue” who now resides in the region today.  Elements of the homes’ layout plan and floor plan are identical to the Tai Khun houses except for the position of the master bedroom. The Tai Nue’s common position for master bedroom is on the right side of the Keng-Pa-La (spiritual altar). In this case, the bed head position is placed southeast for the Tai Nue, while the Tai Khun preferred the position of their master bedroom on the left side of the Keng-pa-la, which would be east.
The combination between the adobe bricks and timber structures can be described through the Criteria of Determination by Construction as follows: The group of houses that have been constructed more than 51 years ago commonly uses adobe bricks, which bears the construction method that combines timber skeleton structure. The timber skeleton structure is usually built bearing wall from ground to second floor and enclosed the whole ground floor area with adobe bricks bearing wall system. However, the building envelope of the second floor area enclosed have been equally divided by bearing wall and wooden wall, which make the enclosed space of the houses seem light and airy. While it looks sturdy in elevation, it usually constructs a large house to accommodate 2-3 families in a single building. The groups of houses which have been constructed in past 31-50 years are smaller due to descendant secessions, which initiated the construct of a new house for the nuclear families. The last house group, which has been built less than 30 years, usually enclosed the whole building envelope by constructing adobe brick wall bearing in all houses. Each house have a characteristic roof structure based on the Tai Ethnic Groups scheme in Southeast Asia, with the development of scheme in hipped - gable style  to  hipped style and gable style in the latter stages. However, the characteristic of the adobe brick structure and the timber structure of houses are independently allocated for enclosed space according to the utilization, the development of layout plan elements depend on the context and the extension of family.

The region known as Kalotaszeg, situated in
North-Western Transylvania (Romania), is well known
due to its rich ethnographic heritage. It has been
researched and described especially by Hungarian
scholars since the end of the 19th century. Although
this wide scholarly interest led to the accumulation of
significant and deep knowledge of the region, the
intense development the rural architecture of
Kalotaszeg witnessed in the past century calls for a new
analysis. It also needs to be recognized that theoretical
approaches in and methodologies of researching vernacular
architecture have changed, too. Furthermore, it
is our task to make an inventory of and present all of
the extremely vulnerable surviving values.

ในบทความ “องค์รวมภูมิทัศน์วัฒนธรรมชุมชนและสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่นเรือนที่อยู่อาศัยในลุ่มน้ำทะเลสาบสงขลา” นี้เป็นการเรียบเรียงเชิงพรรณนาขึ้นมาจากการวิจัยและการสังเคราะห์ข้อมูลในโครงการวิจัยต่างๆ ที่ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาโดยใช้พื้นที่ลุ่มน้ำทะเลสาบสงขลาเป็นสนามวิจัย ทั้งนี้แบ่งเนื้อหาหลักของบทความออกเป็น 3 ประเด็น คือ
ประเด็นที่ 1 “การศึกษาภูมิศาสตร์ของพื้นที่คาบสมุทรภาคใต้เน้นลุ่มน้ำทะเลสาบสงขลา” เพื่อให้ทราบถึงข้อมูลของคาบสมุทรภาคใต้ และลุ่มน้ำทะเลสาบสงขลาในมิติภูมิศาสตร์ อาทิเช่น ภูมิประเทศ และภูมิอากาศ ที่ตั้ง และที่ตั้งสัมพันธ์
ประเด็นที่ 2 คือ “ลักษณะของการตั้งถิ่นฐานชุมชนในพื้นที่ลุ่มน้ำทะเลสาบสงขลาตามลักษณะภูมิประเทศที่แตกต่าง” ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ของวิถีชีวิตผู้คนที่เชื่อมโยงสัมพันธ์กับประเด็นทางภูมิศาสตร์อย่างแนบแน่น ก่อให้เกิดเป็นภูมิปัญญาแบบต่างๆ ในการดำเนินชีวิต และเมื่อมีทรัพยากรการผลิตที่มากเกินกว่าความต้องการใช้สอยก็จะนำมาแลกเปลี่ยนระหว่างกัน ซึ่งนอกจากจะได้บริโภคและอุปโภคผลผลิตที่มาจากระบบนิเวศน์อื่นๆ แล้วยังเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงสร้างเครือข่ายความสัมพันธ์แบบพึ่งพาอาศัยกันและกัน และนำไปสู่การส่งผ่านการเรียนรู้ในวิธีการแก้ไขปัญหา และภูมิปัญญาในการก่อสร้างที่อยู่อาศัยด้วย
ประเด็นที่ 3 คือ “การศึกษาองค์ประกอบของภูมิทัศน์วัฒนธรรมชุมชน และสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่นในพื้นที่ลุ่มนา้ํ ทะเลสาบสงขลาแบบเป็นองค์รวม” เพื่อสร้างคำอธิบายถึงลักษณะทางภูมิทัศน์วัฒนธรรมในพื้นที่จากหลักฐานประเภทต่างๆ ทั้งการลงสำรวจภาคสนาม การศึกษาจากหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์ การทบทวนสารสนเทศ การสัมภาษณ์ผู้คนในท้องถิ่น เพื่อสร้างองค์ความรู้เรื่องภูมิทัศน์วัฒนธรรม และสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่นในลุ่มน้ำทะเลสาบสงขลาอย่างเป็นองค์รวม ก่อนที่สภาพแวดล้อมทั้งทางธรรมชาติและทางวัฒนธรรมในพื้นที่ศึกษาที่มีความเปราะบางอย่างสูงนั้นจะเกิดความเปลี่ยนแปลงไป
จากการศึกษาพบว่าความหลากหลายทางภูมิศาสตร์ที่แตกต่างหลากหลายของภาคใต้ส่งผลให้เกิดความหลากหลายทาง “ภูมินิเวศน์” และส่งอิทธิพลต่อการตั้งถิ่นฐานของผู้คนในลักษณะของ “นิเวศวิทยาวัฒนธรรม” ที่กำกับให้ผู้อยู่อาศัยต้องปรับตัวตามสภาพแวดล้อมนั้นๆ เมื่อผลลัพธ์ของการแก้ไขปัญหาในการดำเนินชีวิตถูกผลิตซ้ำจนกลายเป็น “ภูมิปัญญา (Local Wisdom)” ที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับวิถีชีวิต และการสร้างสรรค์ที่อยู่อาศัยซึ่งมีผลลัพธ์เป็น “สถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่น
ที่อยู่อาศัย (Vernacular Dwelling Architecture)” ประกอบสร้างกันเป็น “ภาพลักษณ์ (Image)” ของ “ภูมิทัศน์วัฒนธรรม (Cultural Landscape)” ของภาคใต้ อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ในแง่ของความสัมพันธ์กับระบบนิเวศวิทยาวัฒนธรรมอย่างแนบแน่น และส่งผ่านออกมาในการก่อรูปของผังชุมชนและสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่นเรือนที่อยู่อาศัย

Abstract
The article “Holistic Cultural Landscapes of Community and Vernacular Architecture in the Area of Songkhla Lake Watershed” is the description of what has been found from the study and the synthesis of the research project. The contents can be divided into three aspects.
The first aspect is “the Study of Geography of the Southern Thai Peninsular Focusing on Songkla Lake Watershed”. The emphasis is the data collected in the area of Southern Thai peninsular in terms of landform, climate, location, and relative
location.
The second aspect is “the Settlement of Community in the area of Songkhla Lake Influenced by Different Geographical Factors”. This clarifies close relationship between human lives and geographical limitations which has brought about local wisdom. Products are exchanged among groups. This conveys that local people depend on each other, then they can consume products from other different resources. This also leads to the ways they have learnt to solve problems and local wisdom in housing.
The third aspect is “the Holistic Study of Components of Cultural Landscapes of Community and Vernacular Architecture
in the Area of Songkhla Lake Watershed” so as to explain aspects of cultural landscapes from evidences found during the field studies, historical evidences, review of literature and information, and interview with the locals. Knowledge about cultural landscapes and vernacular architecture has been collected, in terms of both nature and culture, in the fragile area before it has been distorted. It was found that diversity in geographical aspects in the South has caused diversity in cultural ecology and has influenced in the settlement where cultural ecology has played its role. As a result, lives need to adjust along with local wisdom in ways of life and creation of dwelling which have been formed.
Finally, vernacular dwelling architecture becomes the image of
Southern cultural landscapes, in terms of formation of community and vernacular architecture, with identity which portrays close relationship between ecology and culture.
