Webometrics

Until recently, knowledge-intensive work activities have predominantly taken place in office buildings as a specialized form of economic infrastructure. New digital technologies together with an economic and organizational transition from closed firms to open platforms has changed the pattern of work within the modern metropolis. The office building is no longer the sole workplace typology and work activity has intensified in other urban locations. The questions then are: "How might smart cities reinterpret workplace culture at the urban scale outside the framework of office buildings typology?" and "Which tools and methodologies can be used to make digital workplace culture visible at the urban scale?" In order to answer these questions, workplaces are observed not as private architectural spaces but as compositions of "subjective urban experiences". A Twitter data analysis provides evidence of workplace spatial culture within the innovative global cities of Amsterdam, London and Paris, interpreted as behavior settings. This analysis shows that office pattern locations are generally distributed independently to knowledge intensive business services and workplace demand, as expressed through social media analyses. In addition to office buildings, transit hubs, urban amenities and new digital services play a key role in reframing workplace location. Moving beyond generic visions for digital work in outer spaces, big data therefore provides specific insights and incentives for considering workplace design at the urban scale.

Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to provide a network analysis of Twitter discussions about Myung-Bak Lee, a former president of South Korea, to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the public opinion exchange on Twitter.

Design/methodology/approach
– Opinion leaders in the discussion network were identified by considering the longitudinal distribution of tweets containing the former president’s name, and three types of messages (“followings,” “mentions,” and “retweets”) were analyzed using data collected from November 1, 2011, to April 20, 2012. The sample included 26,150 Twitter users and 892,034 relationships reflecting three types of messages.

Findings
– The results indicate that the discussion about President Myung-Bak Lee was dominated by liberal Twitter users who already had considerable influence both online and offline. In addition, Twitter users were unlikely to interact with other users with opposing political views.

Research limitations/implications
– Almost all of the opinion leaders identified in the study held liberal political views, and liberal Twitter users dominated the discussion network. In addition, the Korean Twitter network showed the presence of the homophily phenomenon, implying that opinion leaders’ influence within the Twitter network was limited to other users sharing the same political views. Further, political views of opinion leaders were skewed toward a particular political stance without necessarily representing the opinion of the general public, possibly hindering the democratic process.

Originality/value
– This study tests the homophily thesis in the context of Twitter users in Korea and contributes to the literature on Twitter-based political discourse by identifying opinion leaders in Korean Twitter networks and examining the phenomenon of homophily within those networks.

In this article, we define webometrics within the framework of informetric studies and bibliometrics, as belonging to library and information science, and as associated with cybermetrics as a generic subfield. We develop a consistent and detailed link typology and terminology and make explicit the distinction among different Web node levels when using the proposed conceptual framework. As a consequence, we propose a novel diagram notation to fully appreciate and investigate link structures between Web nodes in webometric analyses. We warn against taking the analogy between citation analyses and link analyses too far.

Web presence is one of the areas of research in the field of webometrics. Due to lack of precise information on the presence of the Knowledge and Information Science (KIS) faculty members in Iran, this study aims to address this problem. It studies the level and quality of the presence of the LIS faculty and its relation to their professional effectiveness, focusing on their academic and professional performance. This study is an applied research, taking two approaches: descriptive survey and webometrics. The study participants are the KIS faculty members in Iran who hold a PhD degree, have senior lecturer (assistant professor) position and positions above that, and have scientific publications and web citations. When musical parodies as ‘authentic imitations’ of existing artistic compositions or cultural memes are transmitted through social media, the general public may be provoked and confronted with mixed reactions on decency and other moral issues.  This has the potential conflating to a catastrophic state especially when the audiovisual data have instantly been enabled for public access.

The ‘listen, listen, listen’ phenomenon started when a video, which depicts a moderator named Sharifah Zohra Jabeen dismissing a student from asking questions at a forum held in a local university, went viral on social media on 14 January 2013, while her abusive ‘listen’ catch-line and other humiliating remarks catapulted the public uproar overnight. Immediately following the incident, there came a few parody videos, which appear both satirical and entertaining, to underscore a typical paradox that apparently parallels the many underlying problems of the education and politics in Malaysia, and thus ‘listen, listen, listen’ significantly emerges as a contemporary Internet meme.

This paper deals with a hermeneutic study on the ‘listen, listen, listen’ phenomenon based on online comments YouTube members have posted (3,583 as of 10 October) for a musical parody produced and published by Yuri Wong on 14 January. As commentary from other available Internet platforms is analysed, the use of audiovisual data is also technically observed and interpreted. When net citizens drastically involved themselves through actions of liking, disliking, sharing or commenting on the social media, are they more voluble and honest on the Internet platform? Through this musical parody, what idea did they gather to reflect the reality in Malaysia? Are they ready to appreciate musical parodies?

The discussion continues on possible reactions of the censors in the event when musical parodies allegedly ‘collide’ with the ‘national security concerns’.

The process of designing information technology strategy plan (ITSP) in this research is using the research methodology Mixed Methods Approaches by the scope of the research framework on the COBIT framework V.4.1 in Domain Plan and Organize, with the approach in the IT Process PO1-Define a Strategic IT Plan with coverage Detailed Control Objectives, on the activity PO1.1 IT Value Management, PO1.2 Business - IT Alignment, PO1.3 Assessment of Current Capability and Performance, and PO1.4IT Strategic Plan. As a major research framework, COBIT V.4.1 able to limit the scope of the problems in this research, and can perform transcription analysis on the various theories and frameworks that relate to the design of IT organizations. Research produces 4 outputs consisting of; identification between sustainability goals with the objectives of the IT institutions, identify the value of IT management, to get an assessment of current capability and performance, and the IT strategy plan.

The design is divided into seven discussions, namely the following; institutes goals in the context of IT in the ITB, IT leads to ITB, information architecture, application architecture, infrastructure architecture, organizational architecture, and IT Roadmap development. Classification of services in the main IT ITSP consists of Teaching and Learning Services, Academic Administration Services, Research and Expertise Service, Human Resource Development Service, Organizations Management Service, Service and Support. Discussion of the organization strategies focus on the IT Management Unit in the ITB. IT Architecture in the ITSP is divided into 4 main categories, namely information, applications, organizational, and infrastructure. The others discussion is about IT planning related with institutes business goals context, on investment and related development of IT Roadmap achievement in ITB.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate Malayalam newspaper web sites using ‗Alexa Internet' a subsidiary company of Amazon.com which provides commercial web traffic data.. It is one of the most well known tools for evaluating websites that offers a free‐ of‐ charge evaluation service. The present study has been done by using webometric methods. The 13 leading Malayalam newspaper websites from Kerala are taken for evaluation in the present study. Each newspaper web site was searched in Alexa databank and relevant data including traffic rank, pages viewed, speed, links, bounce percentage, time on site, search percentage, and Indian/foreign users were collected. Further these data were tabulated and analysed. The results of this study show that Malayala Manorama has the highest traffic rank in India as well as global. Siraj has the highest number of average pages viewed per day and estimated daily time spent on site by the visitors. The fastest downloading speed is for Madhyamam. Malayala Manorama has the highest number of links. Veekshanam has the lowest bounce percentage. Highest percentage of visits that came from search engines is for Janayugom. The highest number of foreign users is for Chandrika. Most of the foreign users to Malayalam newspapers come from the Gulf countries like Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Although there is evidence that counting the readers of an article in the social reference site, Mendeley, may help
to capture its research impact, the extent to which this is true for different scientific fields is unknown. This study
compares Mendeley readership counts with citations for different social sciences and humanities disciplines. The
overall correlation between Mendeley readership counts and citations for the social sciences was higher than for
the humanities. Low and medium correlations between Mendeley bookmarks and citation counts in all the
investigated disciplines suggest that these measures reflect different aspects of research impact. Mendeley data
was also used to discover patterns of information flow between scientific fields. Comparing information flows
based on Mendeley bookmarking data and cross disciplinary citation analysis for the disciplines revealed
substantial similarities and some differences. Thus, the evidence from this study suggests that Mendeley
readership data could be used to help capture knowledge transfer across scientific disciplines, especially for
people that read but do not author articles, as well as giving impact evidence at an earlier stage than is possible
with citation counts.

Citations from patents to scientific publications provide useful evidence about the commercial impact of academic research but automatically searchable databases are needed to exploit this connection for large scale patent citation evaluations. Google covers multiple different international patent office databases but does not index patent citations or allow automatic searches. In response, this article introduces a semi-automatic indirect method via Bing to extract and filter patent citations from Google to academic papers with an overall precision of 98%. The method was evaluated with 322,192 science and engineering Scopus articles from every second year during 1996-2012. Although manual Google Patent searches give more results, especially for articles with many patent citations, the difference is not large enough to be a major problem. Within Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, and Pharmacology & Pharmaceutics, 7%-10% of Scopus articles had at least one patent citation but other fields had far fewer so patent citation analysis is only relevant for a minority of publications. Low but positive correlations between Google Patent citations and Scopus citations across all fields suggests that traditional citation counts cannot substitute for patent citations when evaluating research, however.

This literature review describes web indicators for the impact of books, software, datasets, videos and other non-standard academic outputs. Although journal articles dominate academic research in the health and natural sciences, other types of outputs can make equally valuable contributions to scholarship and are more common in other fields. It is not always possible to get useful citation-based impact indicators for these due to their absence from, or incomplete coverage in, traditional citation indexes. In this context, the web is particularly valuable as a potential source of impact indicators for non-standard academic outputs. The main focus in this review is on books because of the much greater amount of relevant research for them and because they are regarded as particularly valuable in the arts and humanities and in some areas of the social sciences.

University rankings have gradually become an issue for concern in the academic
community worldwide. Several mechanisms with different methodologies have been
developed to rank the universities appropriately. However, some ranking tools have
notable issues, especially with the indicators adopted. Some are based merely on research
performance, whilst others have focused solely on specific fields, such as science and
technology – which could have deprived those in the arts and social sciences. This paper
uses a narrative review to highlight a number of inconsistencies in the methodologies
applied to rank universities. Five main ranking tools commonly applied to the world's
universities are reviewed, namely Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Times Higher Education (THE),
Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Leiden University ranking and Webometrics
ranking. We found that several flaws in the rankings caused inconsistencies in university
placings in different rankings. Suggestions for integrating multiple criteria and indicators
for better ranking exercises are proposed.

One hundred and seventy two parameters and a five-point rating scale have been designed to rank IITs and NITs library websites. A detailed criterion has been developed with two variables "Yes" and "No" while conditional and additional scenarios were added as per the requirement. The present study was carried out on the library website/web page of the 19 IITs and 29 NITs. The study reveals that the score point of IIT Kanpur library website placed in the first position and NIT Agartala placed in the last position among all the engineering institution taken for the study. The study further suggested that the evaluation of libraries' website must be done frequently so as to check the structure and information available in the website as well as to keep the website updated.

Purposes-The four major Subject Repositories (SRs), arXiv, Research Papers in Economics (RePEc), Social Science Research Network (SSRN) and PubMed Central (PMC), are all important within their disciplines but no previous study has systematically compared how often they are cited in academic publications. In response, this article reports an analysis of citations to SRs from Scopus publications, 2000 to 2013. Design/methodology/approach-Scopus searches were used to count the number of documents citing the four SRs in each year. A random sample of 384 documents citing the four SRs was then visited to investigate the nature of the citations. Findings-Each SR was most cited within its own subject area but attracted substantial citations from other subject areas, suggesting that they are open to interdisciplinary uses. The proportion of documents citing each SR is continuing to increase rapidly, and the SRs all seem to attract substantial numbers of citations from more than one discipline. Research limitations/implications-Scopus does not cover all publications, and most citations to documents found in the four SRs presumably cite the published version, when one exists, rather than the repository version. Practical implications – SRs are continuing to grow and do not seem to be threatened by Institutional Repositories (IRs) and so research managers should encourage their continued use within their core disciplines, including for research that aims at an audience in other disciplines. Originality/value-This is the first simultaneous analysis of Scopus citations to the four most popular SRs.

Abundant research has been done on webometrics regarding the control of websites on each other and the trustworthiness of Web Impact Factor (WIF) as a quantitative instrument to demonstrate the visibility and brunt of websites. The main intention of this investigation is to learn the impact of 19 universities spread over the country of Sri Lanka on the web. Consequently, total number of web pages and links into every university were calculated by advance search skill of AltaVista search engine. On the whole, inlink and self-link WIFs for all website were calculated. In wrapping up the universities ranked according to these parameters. The outcome demonstrates that The universities of Srilanka are possessing varied domains for their home pages namely .ac .net and .lk but most of them (89.47%) prefer the sub level domain like .ac, University of Colombo, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Peradeniya ranked one by possessing highest web pages, inlinks and selflinks respectively.  University of the Visual & Performing Arts of Sri Lanka topped one for web impact factor for inlinks, The Open University of Sri Lanka ranked one for web impact factor for selflinks and here once again university of Colombo is first in the WISER ranking

This study compares Spanish and UK research in eight subject fields using a range of bibliometric and social media indicators. For each field, lists of Spanish and UK journal articles published in the year 2012 and their citation counts were extracted from Scopus. The software Webometric Analyst was then used to extract a range of altmetrics for these articles, including patent citations, online presentation mentions, online course syllabus mentions, Wikipedia mentions and Mendeley reader counts and Altmetric.com was used to extract Twitter mentions. Results show that Mendeley is the altmetric source with the highest coverage, with 80% of sampled articles having one or more Mendeley readers, followed by Twitter (34%). The coverage of the remaining sources was lower than 3%. All of the indicators checked either have too little data or increase the overall difference between Spain and the UK and so none can be suggested as alternatives to reduce the bias against Spain in traditional citation indexes.

l social networking sites by scientists. 
Design/methodology/approach: Consejo Superior de In
vestigaciones Científicas (CSIC) (Spanish National Research Council) researchers registered in the most currently relevant academic social network sites (Google Scholar Citations,
Academia.edu, ResearchGate and Mendeley) were analysed. 6,132 profiles were classified according the eight research areas of the CSIC. 
Findings: Results show that Academia.edu is massively populated by humanists and social scientists, while ResearchGate is popular among biologists. Disciplinary
differences are observed across every platform. Thus, scientists from the humanities and social sciences and natural resources show a significant activity contacting other
members. On the contrary, biologists are more passive using social tools .
Originality/value: This is the first study that analyses the disciplinary performance of a same sample of researchers on a varied number of academic social sites, comparing their numbers across websites.

Apresentação da disciplina Métricas de Informação e Conhecimento na Web ofertada na linha Arquitetura & Organização do Conhecimento (AOC) do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Gestão & Organização do Conhecimento (PPG-GOC) da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG).

This paper is mainly about the digital reputation of universities, the correlation between the productivity of the universities and the reputation of the knowledge produced in the universities. Paper starts with the affect of social media and other web 2.0 entities on the universities and education. In the second part the difficulty of measuring knowledge level is discussed and problem is defined in a two dimensions including big data problems, together with the knowledge level. The third part discusses the concept of knowledge shareholders and the impact of reputation to the knowledge shareholders. Finally a methodology for correlating the online reputation of the universities and the reputation of knowledge produced in the universities. The data sources, methodology and results are published. As a result, there is a high level of correlation, about 80%, between the digital reputations of universities and reputation of the knowledge produced in the universities. The study also splits universities into two groups as the public and private universities and the correlation factor of public universities is a bit higher than the private universities.

Although it is acknowledged that there has been an exponential growth in neocatastrophist geoscience
inquiry, the extent, chronology and origin of this mode have not been precisely scrutinized. In this study, we
use the bibliographic research tool Scopus to explore ‘catastrophic’ words replete in the earth and planetary
science literature between 1950 and 2009, assessing when, where and why catastrophism has gained new
currency amongst the geoscience community. First, we elucidate an exponential rise in neocatastrophist
research from the 1980s onwards. We then argue that the neocatastrophist mode came to prominence in
North America during the 1960s and 1970s before being more widely espoused in Europe, essentially after
1980. We compare these trends with the EM-DAT disaster database, a worldwide catalogue that compiles
more than 11,000 natural disasters stretching back to 1900. The findings imply a clear link between
anthropogenically forced global change and an increase in disaster research (r2=0.73). Finally, we attempt
to explain the rise of neocatastrophism by highlighting seven non-exhaustive factors: (1) the rise of applied
geoscience; (2) inherited geological epistemology; (3) disciplinary interaction and the diffusion of ideas
from the planetary to earth sciences; (4) the advent of radiometric dating techniques; (5) the
communications revolution; (6) webometry and the quest for high-impact geoscience; and (7) popular cultural frameworks.

The paper discusses the maximum accurate trends and indications of Indian Library Association Website’s utility in terms of the usage count hits, files, pages, sites, hosts and visits, as well as daily averages of these counters for each month during the period from January to December 2015. The study will help web analysts, website developers, IT professionals who are engaged in web design and development. Such studies are also important for digital marketing professionals who wish to know the trend of visitors and value of content in changing desire of users. The study is very important to librarians, information analysts, digital and virtual librarians, archive host and developers, digital content analysts, etc. It will be useful to researchers and authors who are in the field of conducting web study, research and content analysis search techniques. The content providers, institutions, business groups, to look into the trends and make appropriate policies related to web modeling and designing on the basis of inferences depicted from the analysis. The web managers, policy planning and decision makers can track webometrics to make strategic and administrative decisions.

Nel contributo vengono analizzati i principali strumenti per l’applicazione delle web metrics e delle metriche alternative (altmetrics). Dopo una breve introduzione sulle trasformazioni apportate dalla rete al mondo della ricerca e della comunicazione scientifica, ci si sofferma sul significato del termine 'impatto bibliografico' e sul concetto di 'visibilità sociale' in relazione al tema della valutazione della ricerca. Viene quindi fornita una rassegna dei più noti e diffusi tool per le web metrics da una parte, e di fonti e software per altmetrics dall’altra, elencando di ognuno le caratteristiche fondamentali, le finalità e l’ambito di utilizzo. Trattandosi – specie le metriche alternative – di un terreno in continua espansione e ancora ‘instabile’, non è ipotizzabile ad oggi un’applicazione di questi strumenti per fini istituzionali di valutazione della ricerca; è tuttavia auspicabile un loro utilizzo a fianco e come integrazione delle misure tradizionali.

The visibility – and impact? – on the Web and within social networks: an overview of the main altmetrics tools
The paper analyses the main available tools for the application of web metrics and altmetrics. After a brief description of the transformations occurred in scientific communication due to the Web, the article focuses on the meaning of 'impact' and 'social visibility' with regard to research assessment. The author provides a detailed overview of the most popular tools for web metrics, as well as sources and software for altmetrics. The fast-growing field of altmetrics is still unstable, thus not allowing their use for institutional purposes. However, their application in addition to traditional metrics is desirable.

The present study examines the websites of different IMT Campuses Library and BITS Pilani Campuses Libraries in India and the United Arab Emirates. There are 4 Campus libraries of IMT and BITS Pilani in different States of India and the United Arab Emirates. All the campus libraries in India and abroad are having their websites. The study analyses the web pages, domain authority, equity-links, internal, external links, and web impact factor totaling to rank it. Out of 8 library websites,6 websites have .ac domain extensions. A search engine optimization tool called link explorer (https:// moz.com/link-explorer) developed by Moz.com is used to help to track the links leading to the website. Based on the overall WIF, BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus Library stands at the first position with 1476417.08 SWIF followed by the BITS Pilani Campus Library website which is in the second place with 1307683.71 SWIF.

Purpose – The present study aims at determining the most accredited free English electronic journals
(EJs) in Medical Sciences, as finding free scholarly EJs including medical ones is difficult on the web
environment.
Design/methodology/approach – The research population consisted of 700 free EJs of Medical
Sciences, which were collected from two reputable websites, namely, Directory of Open Access Journals
and Free Medical Journals. After first screening, 269 free EJs including 76 journals in health, 4 journals
in nursing, 175 journals in medicine and 14 free EJs in dentistry remained for final investigation […].
Findings – The most accredited journals in four medical disciplines studied here are health: New
South Wales Public Health Bulletin, PLoS Biology and Environmental Health Perspectives – National
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; nursing: Online Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care
and Online Journal of Nursing Informatics […].
Originality/value – This research can be treated as an addition to the webometrics literature.
