The proposed panel session aims to discuss the impact of migrations on ancient economies. We aim to understand the economic role of migrants in the local communities and their position in the host societies through a wide range of contributions about ancient economic spaces in the Mediterranean and in Central Europe. In particular, we will discuss the function of migration and mobility within the fields of production, exchange and consumption.
In the field of the production, we are going to analyse technological developments and economic growth in host communities following the cultural interaction and the transmission of technological knowledge due to human mobility. Furthermore, we will analyse the social position of the migrants in the work market of their new communities and in the new settled territories. A key aspect will be the contribution of migrants to the production and their networking role for the exchange. The ports of trade will be taken in consideration as a meeting-point of different economic systems. In the field of consumption, we are going to present the coexistence of different economic mentalities, as factors of innovation and conflict in local communities. Consumerism will be taken in consideration to understand dynamics of interaction, integration and segregation. The consumption behavior will be considered as proxy to understand the social identities of migrants and their expressions.
The speakers are asked to compare their case studies to build a common platform of discussion, overtaking chronological and geographical specificities, in the way to discuss more general methodological and theoretical questions: Which archaeological data are suitable to detect the relationships between economic behavior and cultural identities? How did different economic and political systems affect the position of migrants in the local communities and their participation to local and global economies? Which are the effects of different strategies of economic integration of migrants in the host societies on the economic development and on the social stability of local markets and communities? Is our interpretation biased by our modern perspectives or is it possible to contextualize an agent based perception of the economic role of ancient migrants?

The so-called Potinklumpen, which was found in the city zone of Zurich in 1890, consists of about 17.200 to 18.000 late Latène potin coins which are melted together. Only two types of coins could be identified: potin coins of the Zurich type and of the «Sequani» type (group A). The spectrum of the types shows close parallels to that of the Late Latène settlement on the nearby Üetliberg. Therefore the «Potinklumpen» can be dated to around 100 B.C. Within the Turicum-project of the University of Bern, which is sponsered by the Swiss National Science Foundation, a number of scientific surveys could be realized in co-operation with the Swiss National Museum. They provide new knowledge concerning the composition, the reconstruction of the melting-process and the chronology. Several possibilities for interpretation are discussed on the ba sis of the reconstructed melting-process as well as on comparable finds.

Résumé: L’usage de monnaies sur le territoire suisse à l’époque de La Tène a débuté avec des imitations précoces de pièces macédoniennes en or, vers le milieu du 3e siècle av. J.-C., alors qu’un monnayage produit régionalement n’est attesté qu’à partir de la première moitié du siècle suivant. Avec l’accroissement des échanges à longue distance et l’apparition d’agglomérations étendues, à La Tène finale (dès env. 150 av. J.-C.), s’est développé un système monétaire différencié, composé à la fois de monnaies d’or, d’argent et d’alliage cuivreux. On observe des échanges monétaires réguliers à l’ouest et au nord du territoire suisse à la transition entre La Tène D1 et D2 (vers 80 av. J.-C.). L’usage de l’argent, désormais dominant sous la forme de nouveaux types de quinaires, s’explique vraisemblablement par la nécessité de financer des armées. Des monnaies de bronze celtiques seront encore frappées au début de la période de la domination romaine, à la fin du 1er siècle av. J.-C.: elles représentent alors une compensation bienvenue au manque de petites dénominations dans les provinces rhénanes.

Riassunto: In Svizzera l’utilizzo delle monete è cominciato durante l’epoca di La Tène con imitazioni precoci di monete auree della Macedonia attorno alla metà del III sec. a.C. La coniatura delle monete sul territorio elvetico, per contro, è documentata a partire dal II sec. a.C. Dal La Tène tardo (150 a.C. circa), con l’aumento dei traffici a lunga distanza e lo sviluppo di insediamenti di grandi dimensioni, si diffonde un sistema monetale costituito da monete d’oro, d’argento e di bronzo. Durante la transizione tra il LT D1 e il LT D2 (verso l’80 a.C.) in gran parte delle regioni della Svizzera occidentale e settentrionale è attestato un vero e proprio sistema di cambio di valuta. La grande diffusione dei quinari in argento è da ricollegare, con ogni probabilità, al soldo dei militari. Le ultime monete celtiche di bronzo verranno coniate sotto il dominio romano verso il I sec. a.C. Esse rappresenteranno una apprezzata alternativa per far fronte all’insufficienza di monete nelle province renane.

Während der Begleitung einer Leitungstrasse im Brandenburger Ortsteil Kirchmöser fanden sich mehrere kreisrunde Gruben, die zu einer nahe gelegenen jungbronzezeitlichen Siedlung gehören und möglicherweise als Speichergrubenareal anzusprechen sind.

Vor fünf Jahren kam die rasante Fahrt der Spekulationsgeschäfte moderner Finanzwirtschaft mit einem großen Crash vorerst zum Stillstand. In den tiefen Rissen, die der anfangs schillernde Investmenthandel durch die Realwirtschaft zog, kamen bankrotte Banken, insolvente Konzerne und sogar zahlungsunfähige Staaten zu Fall. Gleichzeitig blickte man durch die Abgründe auf die Verfehlungen von Wirtschaftsmodellen, die unter höchst spekulativen Prämissen (homo oeconomicus-Modell, Marktgleichgewicht, Wertstabilität) Prognosen für wirtschaftliches Handeln in der Zukunft abgaben, dabei aber die Krise nicht vorhersagen konnten. Mit zunehmender Skepsis gegenüber der herrschenden neoliberalen Wirtschaftsordnung stieg gleichzeitig der Bedarf an Informationen über alternative Wirtschaftsansätze. In der Folge veröffentlichte die Süddeutsche Zeitung Artikel-Serien zu den Themen „Ein neuer Kapitalismus“ sowie „Kapitalismus und Krise“ und schwergewichtige Publikationen wie „Die Ökonomie von Gut und Böse“ aus der Feder des Nationalökonom Tomáš Sedláček (2012) sowie „Schulden. Die ersten 5000 Jahre“ vom Wirtschaftsanthropologen David Graeber (2012) führen die Bestsellerlisten an. Angesichts der seit 2007 in einer breiten Öffentlichkeit geführten Debatten über die Differenzen zwischen hegemonialen und eher randständigen Wirtschaftstheorien fragt man sich zwangsläufig, wie es denn im eigenen Fach um die Rezeption gängiger Wirtschaftstheorien bestellt ist?
Diese Frage möchte ich in meinem Vortrag für die Oppidaforschung beantworten. Im Zentrum meines Referates steht dabei die Rekonstruktion des Diskurses zum Thema Wirtschaft in der westdeutschen Spätlatèneforschung von ihren Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart. Hierfür wird einerseits der intersubjektive wirtschaftstheoretische Sinn bestimmt, der in den ausgewählten fachwissenschaftlichen Aussagen enthalten ist, andererseits geht es darum, den diskursiven Weg nachzuzeichnen, über den wirtschaftshistorische Aussagen im Verlauf der Oppidaforschung von einer These zu einer wissenschaftlichen Tatsache geworden sind.
