The Greek announcement of its excessive debts led to one of the most severe crises the EU has faced since its inception. The crisis soon evolved into a full leadership crisis as European political leaders struggled to come up with a common solution to the challenges they faced. Theories of leadership and crisis management identify several factors that may contribute to these differences. This article examines to what extent leaders’
personal traits and external pressure influenced how six political leaders made sense of the situation. The study finds that a leader’s belief that they can control events, their self-confidence, as well as economic pressure provide a partial explanation of how European leaders make sense of the crisis. The traits of cognitive complexity and openness to information do not exert an influence in the cases discussed here. These findings indicate that any comprehensive understanding of how leaders make sense of crises should take note of specific individual as well as contextual factors.

En este artículo se expone una serie de reflexiones sobre el racismo, la xenofobia y la inmigración tomando por contexto a España en la primera década del siglo XXI. En primer lugar, España fue gobernada, durante ese periodo, por un gobierno de la derecha parlamentaria entre 2000 y 2004. En segundo lugar, lo fue por un gobierno de la izquierda parlamentaria entre 2004 y 2010. ¿Cuáles han sido sus actuaciones respecto a esta temática? ¿Qué pasó en España? In the United Kingdom and the United States, references in political communication, different authors report the migration of the political praxis, from tactic to tabloid. They admit the banalisation of the political process, which is attributed in part to the leadership that spin doctors have in the communicational process of politics. Always adapted to the social context and the own system of each country, many of the tendencies that have been imposed in these countries are arriving among us and are configuring also our politics. In Spain, democracy based on media power has been installed as well as the banalisation of the political process. Two paradigmatic politicians of this new kind of politics, Barack Obama and José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, were protagonists in April 2009 of a descriptive moment of this context.

Las cualidades políticas de este líder se formaron a lo largo de su juventud mediante su dominio del Partido Socialista Obrero Español (psoe) provincial leonés que lideró en los años ochenta y noventa. When Spain’s Socialist party came to power in 2004, its first act of government was to present a draft bill forbidding domestic violence in the home, something which had previously been missing from the statute books. This measure was motivated by an explicit commitment to a specific political ideal that prevents the capacity for anyone in society to exercise arbitrary power over any others. This is the central principle in republican political theory. I examine the implications this philosophical commitment has for government policy.
