Im 19. Jahrhundert, genau in einer Zeit in der viele neue wissenschaftliche Disziplinen und Fächer geboren wurden, interagierten Kunst und Wissenschaft zunehmend. Inspiriert von Alexander von Humboldts Ansichten und Erfahrungen, arbeiteten zahlreiche Künstler und Wissenschaftler an gemeinsamen Projekten, wie Weltreisen, Naturforschungen und Publikationen. Es entstanden nicht nur viele Kontakte, Netzwerke und Freundschaften zwischen Künstlern und Naturwissenschaftlern, sondern es kam auch zu spannenden und innovativen Zusammenarbeiten. Das 1864–1869 durch das Bibliographische Institut herausgegebene Illustrirte Thierleben gilt als eine exemplarische Zusammenarbeit zwischen einem Naturforscher und einem Künstler, namentlich Alfred Brehm und Robert Kretschmer.

La fotografía de Fernando Cordero revela el estado crítico de nuestro hábitat y el manejo no sustentable de los paisajes en el "Antropoceno tardío. " "Antropoceno" es una categoría no oficial de la geología, introducida por el científico Paul Crutzen en el 2000, propuesta para reconocer que el ser humano, con sus actos de civilización-como la urbanización, la industrialización y la agricultura química-, se ha con-vertido en una fuerza geológica que ha alterado profundamente la condición del planeta Tierra. Con-vencionalmente, vivimos todavía en el Holoceno. Sin embargo, para Crutzen el llamado Antropoceno inició con la industrialización en Inglaterra a mediados del siglo xviii, se intensificó con el uso excesivo de energía fósil (carbón y petróleo) y alcanzó un auge exponencial con el uso masivo del automóvil a mediados del siglo xx, situación a la que se sumó el negativo impacto ambiental causado por la produc-ción masiva de plásticos a partir de los años sesenta. Por lo demás, añadir el adjetivo "tardío" a la categoría del Antropoceno es una provocación: expresa una preocupación del sujeto contemporáneo por el acelerado desarrollo autodestructivo de la Tierra, sostenido también por los impactos de la infraestruc-tura civilizatoria en el paisaje y por una irresponsable rutina de producción arquitectónica en cuanto a su calidad ambiental. Estas situaciones han sido tematizadas en el ensayo fotográfico de Cordero. El término Antropoceno es un instrumento para la crítica ambiental que no sólo se expresa en discursos científico-políticos, sino que también se manifiesta por medio de la imagen, en este caso, en la fotografía artística contemporánea. Con ello se estructura un modelo de percepción del mundo y de interacción con su condición ambiental, el cual fue inventado por Alexander von Humboldt, quien nació hace 250 años para, 34 años después, explorar las tierras mexicanas como científico ambulante.

The present paper proposes a reconstruction of the connection between the scientific observations of the Prussian scientist Alexander von Humboldt and Article 9 of the Constitution of the Italian Republic. This reconstruction is based on Humboldt's Tableaux de la Nature and his Relation historique. It will show how the ideas of the German naturalist Hugo Conwentz derived from Humboldt's works and will then consider the influence of Conwentz on Article 150 of the Weimar Constitution. Lastly, it will afterwards illustrate how Article 9 itself is based on Article 150 of the Weimar Constitution and how it was subject to changes before assuming its current, constitutional wording.

To most, Charles Darwin's story is simply the birth of the Theory of Evolution. In reality, the story of how Darwin came to this theory, and the many people who would shape his destiny, is itself a story that needs to be told. Like many superhero movies of the 21st century, Darwin has a " back story " , the tale of how Darwin became Darwin. Darwin's story can appeal to many readers on different levels. On the purely academic level the work traces the influence of Alexander von Humboldt, Goethe and Wordsworth, in addition to Erasmus Darwin, on the development of Charles Darwin's theory of natural and sexual selection. On another level is the story of the development of Darwin's imagination and how this enabled his theories to evolve during the Victorian era when it was difficult to express them, yet at the same time in an era which encouraged them. This was a very contradictory time in history indeed. Charles Darwin's Debt to the Romantics is an attempt to mirror Darwin's own narrative, in which, through his imagination, he engages in conversation with the reader on a journey to discover the laws behind the process in which life evolves. These traces in time, moving both backwards into the past and forwards into the future, are like footprints in the sand, some of which get washed away never to be seen again. What drew me to this research was the Romantic notion of the imagination in which the self is so very much a part of Nature. We try very hard to observe nature objectively, but we can never get away from being subjectively part of it at the same time, just through the very act of observing it through our senses or through the act of remembering what we have seen, or think we have seen. And these footprints, or recreated memories of our past, are there for us to see today in fossils or archaeological remains — a mental map of our descent. What makes all of this so Romantic is the almost terrifying or sublime notion that mind has come from matter — that mind evolved and originated from that which was not mind. This is surely one of the greatest mysteries of our very existence — that science, poetry, literature, language, thought and culture have all ultimately evolved from inorganic nature (and this, of course, is only part of the story, as inorganic nature evolved before this).

This paper investigates the origin of Whitman's use of the term "kosmos" in his most famous poem, "Song of Myself." It traces the term back to the work of the Early German Romantics and their contemporaries, in particular Alexander von Humboldt and Friedrich Schlegel

La escritora Andrea Wulf ofrece una nueva, bien nutrida y, sin embargo, no poco problemática biografía de Alexander von Humboldt.2 La obra ha recibido incontables aclamaciones por parte de la crítica y los medios internacionales, así como importantes premios, incluyendo el mismo Science Book Price que la Royal Society le otorgó como obra ganadora en el 2016. Ello involucra no solo un destacado reconocimiento científico, sino también la no deleznable suma de £25.000 libras esterlinas. Lo que tal vez han pasado por alto los catalizadores de este tsunami laudatorio son las imprecisiones historiográficas del libro en lo que respecta a la relación de Humboldt con Simón Bolívar, tema al cual el libro dedica no menos de 40 páginas. Este aporte generoso al “mito bolivariano” hace un llamado urgente a una revisión histórica seria y responsable, que se relaciona también, inevitablemente, con las revisiones genealógicas de la República de Colombia.

En las innumerables publicaciones sobre la figura y obra del célebre naturalista Alexander von Humboldt (Berlín, 1769-1859) lo más frecuente es la ausencia de cualquier referencia al decisivo papel que el rey español Carlos IV de Borbón y Sajonia jugó en el famoso “Viaje Americano” (1799-1804) del estudioso alemán. Una de las líneas de trabajo que he seguido desde hace años en distintos estudios (1994, 2001a-b y 2012) la he dedicado a reivindicar el verdadero alcance e importancia de todo lo que Carlos IV llevó adelante durante su reinado (1788-1808) en cuanto a la creación de instituciones sociales, publicación de obras, legislación y apoyo general a la cultura, al mundo clásico o a las expediciones científicas, todo ello dentro de un espíritu verdaderamente ilustrado y casi siempre con la ayuda o sugerencias de su amigo y valido Manuel de Godoy, Príncipe de la Paz. Una larga y doble labor difamadora, de Fernando VII y de Napoléon, con ayuda de varios historiadores de la época, contribuyó muy eficazmente a partir de 1808 a borrar todo ello de su balance. Aunque en los citados estudios hice referencias a Humboldt, en esta ocasión se profundiza en los detalles de la relación del monarca con el sabio berlinés. Por ello puede decirse que, sin los generosos permisos que en marzo y mayo de 1799 Carlos IV concedió a Humboldt, el naturalista jamás hubiera hecho su gran viaje americano, ni probablemente alcanzado la fama universal de la que justamente disfruta, sobre todo en sus tiempos y de nuevo ahora en los nuestros. Como el propio Humboldt escribió en 1804 para la American Philosophical Society, fue “un permiso expedido con una liberalidad y franqueza que honraba al gobierno y al Siglo Filosófico… un viaje por tierra y por mar, que ha sido el más grande que jamás se ha llevado a cabo por un particular”. El trabajo se complementa con varias imágenes, entre ellas un bello y muy desconocido retrato a lápiz de Humboldt, que permaneció inédito hasta 2015. --- Agradezco a D. Incluso antes de su viaje por América, Alexander von Humboldt formuló sus primeras ideas sobre la fitogeografía, centrándose en la conexión entre la historia de las plantas y la del hombre. Las notas en el diario de viaje muestran que Humboldt desarrolló su noción de fitogeografía a base de la impresión directa de la naturaleza de los trópicos: La fisonomía de las plantas busca una síntesis de empirismo y estética. El plan de una geobotánica global que siguió en París en las décadas siguientes le llevó al proceso numérico de la aritmética botánica y al fallido proyecto de una nueva edición de su ‘Ensayo sobre la geografía de las plantas’. Analizando fuentes manuscritas hasta ahora desconocidas, quiero descubrir cómo Humboldt revisó repetidamente su concepción geobotánica y siempre incluyó otros estudiosos en su investigación.

Los viajeros considerados en este libro sintieron todos una verdadera pasión por la independencia política, tanto del Brasil como de las jóvenes repúblicas hispanoamericanas. Que hayan sentido mayor entusiasmo frente a tal novedad, o la hayan reprobado, su mirada oblicua resultó a menudo muy perspicaz. Ajeno a dos tópicos asociados tradicionalmente al género – la narración grandilocuente de una gesta individual y el repertorio de imágenes pintorescas – el relato de viaje debe colocarse entonces al rango de importancia que merece como fuente sobre el tan decisivo “momento axial” de reconfiguración de los imperios, que constituye la década de los años 1820.
Dado que consagraron sus viajes al servicio de la invención de la Libertad, Francisco de Miranda y Alejandro de Humboldt han de ser considerados como paradigmas de una figura del viaje en la que comulgan plenamente estética y política. El nacimiento de la república de Colombia suscitó luego la expresión de un momento político del viaje de mayor intensidad de parte de europeos y norteamericanos. Lo ilustran sobremanera los relatos contradictorios de Gaspard Théodore de Mollien y de William Duane.
Otros viajeros nos brindan una mirada original sobre la independencia del Perú. Tanto el capitán de navío Rossi como Lafond de Lurcy han sido testigos de acontecimientos sobre los cuales los archivos no informan de manera decisiva. Igualmente, las miradas cruzadas de un letrado italiano, Jacobo C. Beltrami, y de un comerciante inglés, William T. Penny, esbozan un retrato muy contrastado de la joven república mexicana. Pero el libro da cuenta también de cómo se pueden utilizar los relatos de viaje para escribir una historia de las mujeres en Lima y Buenos Aires, en la época de la Independencia. De manera simétrica, analiza la mirada de la británica Maria Graham, sobre la condición femenina en el Brasil y sobre la independencia de este país.
Termina este libro con el criterio de Darwin sobre la joven república chilena y los albores muy caóticos, a ojos suyos, de la peruana.

Qu’ils aient accueilli pareille nouveauté avec enthousiasme ou réprobation, leur regard de biais a souvent été étonnement perspicace. Loin, de deux poncifs traditionnellement accolés au genre - la narration grandiloquente d’une geste individuelle et le répertoire d’images pittoresques – le récit de voyage est donc élevé ici au rang de source majeure sur le « moment axial » de reconfiguration des empires, si décisif, de la décade des années 1820.
Parce que Francisco de Miranda et Alexandre de Humboldt ont mis leurs voyages au service de l’invention de la Liberté, il convenait de les considérer comme paradigmes d’une figure du voyage où esthétique et politique ont pleinement communié. The travelers mentioned in this book all had a real passion for the political independence of Brazil and the young Hispano-American republics. Whether they greeted the novelty with enthusiasm or disapproval, their skewed gaze was often astonishingly perceptive. Far from the two clichés traditionally attached to the genre - the grandiloquent narration of an individual gesture and the repertoire of picturesque images - the travel narrative is thus elevated here to the rank of a major source on the "axial moment" of the reconfiguration of empires, which was so decisive in the decade of the 1820s.
Because Francisco de Miranda and Alexandre de Humboldt put their travels at the service of the invention of Liberty, it was appropriate to consider them as paradigms of a figure of travel in which aesthetics and politics were fully communicative. It was the birth of the Republic of Colombia that then gave rise to the expression of a political moment of the Travel of exceptional intensity on the part of Europeans and North Americans. The contradictory accounts of Gaspard Théodore de Mollien and William Duane provide a perfect illustration of this.
Other travellers give us an original look at the independence of Peru: Captain Rossi and Lafond de Lurcy testify to events that are little documented in the archives. Similarly, the cross-examination of an Italian scholar, Jacobo C. Beltrami, and an English merchant, William T. Penny, paint a very contrasting portrait of the young Mexican republic. But the book also gives an account of how travel narratives can be used to write the history of women in Lima and Buenos Aires during the period of Independence. In a symmetrical way, it analyzes the British author Maria Graham's view of the status of women in Brazil and the country's independence.
The book closes with Darwin's impressions of the young republic of Chile and the very chaotic beginnings, in his eyes, of the republic of Peru.

Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Ionesco's Rhinocéros, as authors of great works in what was for the authors a foreign language, find in Adelbert von Chamisso's Peter Schlemihls  wundersame Geschichte a worthy counterpart. In 1813, in his early thirties, he wrote his most celebrated work, a novella that told the story of Peter Schlemihl, a man who sold his shadow to a mysterious and sinister gentleman clad in a grey suit for the sake of the acquisition of a limitless supply of gold coins ever replenished when he removed a desired number of them from a magic receptacle in the form of a bag.the same time that that gentleman in a grey coat offered to return his shadow in exchange for his immortal soul. The beguiling power of evil does not appear in the guise of the traditional figure with goat horns and a barbed tail but as a suave well-spoken businessman seeking to exploit the allure of monetary wealth, almost today's unscrupulous banker's  lawyer.

Para Humboldt, la función del arte no se limitaba a adornar sus textos sino a convertirse en una guía visual para conocer la naturaleza. Esta tesis realiza un recorrido por dos mundos, el del arte y el de la ciencia, a través de la obra Vistas de las Cordilleras y Monumentos de los Pueblos Indígenas de América. Para ello, la autora analiza la relaciones que Humboldt mantuvo con artistas e ilustradores, redescubriendo tanto a quienes trabajaron bajo su mecenazgo, como aquellos artistas que alcanzaron la fama con su mecenazgo y apoyo, tras seguir sus postulados científicos.

This text addresses the theme of natural history in surrealist thought, focusing on the writings of Louis Aragon, André Breton, and Roger Caillois. A central point of analysis concerns the surrealists’ interest in blurring the relations between nature and culture, and the trans-historical alignment between the Early Modern epistemological structure of similitude with the core dynamics of surrealist lyrical thinking.

Opening with Aragon's account in of a surrealist adventure into the Parc des Buttes Chaumont, it explores various aspects of the surrealist sensibility for nature, captured so evocatively in Aragon's meditation in Paris Peasant upon "a feeling for nature": a primal, mythical emotion for which Aragon seeks a modern manifestation in the ersatz picturesque/sublime surroundings of the rather shady park.

The text then looks to the neo-Romanticism of the chapter of Mad Love based on Breton's experiences in Tenerife, in which he develops a lyrical eroticism relating the symbiosis of his new love to that of the unique natural environment of the island made famous by the ecologist Alexander von Humboldt. An analysis of Breton's "nature writing" continues with an account of the “Creole Dialogue” between Breton and André Masson, in which they reflect upon the psychological and physiological affect of tropical vegetation, its overwhelming allure, and how it represents a natural force analogous with the creative imagination.

The final section looks at the mutual interest of Breton and Caillois in minerals and pictographic stones, which are discussed as an element of the surrealist engagement with the historical relationship between marvellous objects and the cabinet of curiosity or Wunderkammer. A distinction is made between Breton’s commitment to the personal hermeneutics constructed through seemingly objective “signs” and Caillois’ relative circumspection about the overdetermination of visual resemblances; a wayward analogical drive he defines as the “demon of analogy.” The chapter concludes that for surrealists like Breton and Caillois, natural history did not only provide an aesthetic or lyrical appeal, but that it also influenced the development of surrealist method, through attention to curiosity, apparent laws and exceptions, and comparative analysis.

In den einschlägigen Indizes, die sowohl Jeffersons wie auch Humboldts Schriften (leider nicht umfassend) erschließen, findet sich allerdings kein direkter Beleg für ihren Bezug auf Varenius, und Humboldts ausführliche Würdigung von Varenius in seinem großen Alterswerk Kosmos liegt sehr viel später als der Amerikaaufenthalt. Er sieht sich in der Nachfolge von Varenius sowie der des spanischen Jesuiten José de Acosta; auf Acosta (Historia Natural y Moral de las Indias) beziehen sich Humboldt und auch Jefferson mehrfach. Obwohl bislang kein unmittelbarer Einfluss von Varenius auf Jefferson und Humboldt nachzuweisen ist, zeigt sich jedoch deutlich die Ähnlichkeit des Geographieverständnisses in dem, was Varenius ‚geographia specialis’ nennt, wenn Varenius wie Jefferson oder Humboldt sich etwa mit einer bloßen Aufzählung von Beschreibungen nicht zufrieden geben mögen, sondern immer nach Auswirkungen und Erklärungen fragen und humangeographische Belange einbeziehen.

El título original es “Isle de Cube. Antilles en general”. Humboldt la utilizó para escribir su famoso Ensayo sobre la isla de Cuba. El diario en sí, parte de los documentos de herencia de Humboldt, tiene una historia muy agitada. Una vez en Berlín, se trasladó a un monasterio en Silesia durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Desde allí se incorporó a la famosa Biblioteca Jagellónica de Cracovia (Biblioteka Jagiellońska) como parte de la "Colección Berlinka" después de la guerra. This is an introduction to the previously never published diary Humboldt (2nd Cuba stay (1804)). The diary reflects essentially the basic structure for the "slavery chapter" in the essay on Cuba. This introductory essay examines Humboldt's observations on a wide range of slaveries, especially in Venezuela (a lot of different slaveries, but also the first beginnings of Second Slavery), in New Granada / Colombia, in the Caribbean and in Cuba/Esta es una introducción al diario de Humboldt nunca antes publicado  (2ª estancia en Cuba (1804)). El diario presenta esencialmente la estructura básica del "capítulo sobre la esclavitud" en el ensayo sobre Cuba. Este ensayo introductorio examina las observaciones de Humboldt sobre una amplia gama de esclavitudes, especialmente en Venezuela (una gran cantidad de esclavitudes diferentes, pero también los primeros comienzos de la Second Slavery/Segunda Esclavitud), en Nueva Granada / Colombia, en el Caribe y en Cuba.

El salvaje en sus múltiples manifestaciones y cargas semánticas –del buen salvaje al caníbal– ocupa un lugar privilegiado en el imaginario latinoamericano del siglo XIX. En la historiografía ilustrada, los discursos de la emancipación y las literaturas nacionales, el salvaje funciona como un artefacto de enunciación retórico-cultural, ya para establecer las continuidades simbólicas de la nación con el pasado indígena, ya para marcar metafóricamente las alteridades étnicas y políticas respecto a las cuales se definieron hegemónicamente las identidades nacionales. Así, el salvaje fue el cuerpo simbólico que la Ilustración criolla le disputó a la europea y también el signo ambivalente de la asincronía americana frente a la Modernidad occidental; fue el tropo para señalar la represión española durante la independencia y al Otro indócil de los relatos nacionales (el indio bravo reencontrado en los procesos de expansión territorial de los Estados nacionales o el negro insurrecto de las plantaciones). El salvaje fue la extrañeza familiar o amena y el locus del terror; el espejo de idílicas citas arqueológicas y el reflejo turbio de la mala conciencia de la colonialidad. Pero, sobre todo, el salvaje –buen salvaje o caníbal– funcionó como máscara y guardarropía cultural: de la sumisión política y de la insurrección, del mestizaje y del blanqueamiento, de aspiraciones de unidad y de ansiedades frente a la heterogeneidad y la fragmentación. El salvaje constituye un índice (en el sentido benjaminiano) del archivo cultural latinoamericano, de las relaciones inestables y malestares de los proyectos nacionales, de las eventuales pugnas y complicidades de los nacionalismos del siglo XIX con el (neo)colonialismo y el capitalismo global, y de los conflictos étnicos y de clase al interior de las comunidades imaginadas.

Este capítulo retoma los rastros de esa compleja economía simbólica en una serie de textos culturales relacionados con:

1) Las disputas y tensiones entre la Ilustración criolla y la europea acerca de la semántica del salvajismo. 2) El discurso de la venganza criolla de la “injusticia de la Conquista” en el pensamiento de la emancipación y la reactivación contra España del tropo lascasiano del imperio devorador. 3) La representación de heterogeneidades étnicas conflictivas para el Estado-nación y el correlativo distanciamiento del Romanticismo latinoamericano temprano respecto del buen salvaje rousseauniano. 4) El uso del tropo caníbal dentro del discurso de “civilización y barbarie” en la pugna entre proyectos nacionales en la Argentina. 5) El desplazamiento étnico del tropocaníbal hacia “lo africano” y Haití, y su articulación al nacionalismo en el Caribe. 6) El indianismo brasileño, cuyos buenos salvajes y caníbales articulan tanto la imaginación idílica de la génesis nacional, como las pesadillas de una sociedad esclavista.

Humboldt y Jefferson explora la relación entre dos personajes fascinantes, Alexander von Humboldt (1769­1859): explorador prusiano, científicoygeógrafoyThomasJefferson(1743­ 1826): hombre de Estado estadounidense, ar­ quitecto y naturalista. Al final de su famosa expedición por las colonias españolas, en el ve­ rano de 1804, Alexander von Humboldt visitó Estados Unidos y se reunió varias veces con el entonces presidente Thomas Jefferson. Así nació una cálida y fructífera amistad que los llevó a mantener una nutrida correspondencia durante muchos años y gracias a la cual po­ dían especular respecto de temas de mutuo interés, como la historia natural, la geografía y la formación de una red científica interna­ cional. Ambos vivieron en sociedades revo­ lucionarias y, por lo tanto, la condición hu­ mana era un tema que les interesaba profunda mente. También cifraron sus esperanzas en la nueva nación estadounidense como posible respuesta a muchas de las falencias que caracte­ rizaban a las sociedades europeas de la época.
El intercambio intelectual entre uno y otro durante los veintiún años siguientes dio cuenta de los acontecimientos que fueron un punto de inflexión en esa época como, por ejemplo, los movimientos independentistas en AméricaLatinaylaaplicabilidaddelmodelode­ mocrático en la región, la relación entre Amé­ rica y Europa, los últimos avances en investiga­ ción científica y cantidad de proyectos tecno­ lógicos. Este texto explora el mundo en el cual estos dos personajes de la Ilustración vi­ vieron y cómo sus vidas de un lado y otro del Atlántico definieron sus convicciones.

Die Ausstellung „Objektwelten als Kosmos – Von Alexander von Humboldt zum Netzwerk Bonner Wissenschaftssammlungen“ ist Ergebnis eines interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekts (2016–2019). Die Bestände von sieben Sammlungen der Universität Bonn wurden im Verbund mit dem Biohistoricum und der Sektion Bioinformatik des Zoologischen Forschungsmuseums Alexander Koenig untersucht, um mit dem Kosmos-Begriff Alexander von Humboldts zu neuen Sichtweisen auf die Objekte zu gelangen. Beteiligt waren das Ägyptische Museum, das Akademische Kunstmuseum der Klassischen Archäologie, das BASA-Museum der Altamerikanistik und Ethnologie, die Sammlung der Vor- und Frühgeschichtlichen Archäologie, das Goldfuß-Museum der Paläontologie, das Mineralogische Museum und die Schelllackplatten-Sammlung der Musikwissenschaften / Sound Studies. Ausstellung und Katalog dokumentieren die Ergebnisse der fachübergreifenden Verbindungen ausgewählter Objekte in wissensgeschichtlichen Perspektiven. Das Bonner Netzwerk Wissenschaftssammlungen präsentiert seine Objektwelten so, wie Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) sich Kosmos vorgestellt hat – als ein allumfassendes und verflochtenes Wissen von der Welt.

Alexander von Humboldt, born 250 years ago, directly influenced the intellectual legacy of Stanford University. His statue resides on the front of the main Quad along with three other scientific explorers, their work intertwined with the history of the university, and its present orientation.
