ELEG 220L (Spring 2020) Lab (7) : Title: RC Circuits

1) The aims of the experiment were to perform transient analysis of an RC circuit and to check the impact of resistance on energy stored in the capacitor by varying the value of R2. 2) The experiment involved building an RC circuit in Multisim, applying a 1V square wave input, and measuring the transient response using an oscilloscope. The value of R2 was varied and graphs of τ and steady state capacitor voltage vs. R2 were plotted. 3) The results showed τ and steady state voltage increasing with R2 as expected since τ = RC. This confirmed that increasing resistance results in more time required to store energy in the capacitor.

Title: RC Circuits SCORE: /100

Student name:
Scope: Chapter (7)

Student#:

Date:
Aim:
The aims of this project are:

 Perform transient analysis of RC circuit.

 To check the impact of resistance on energy stored in capacitor by varying the value of R2
and vs. τ and vC (∞)
Introduction:
Using the available components in the lab, connect the following circuits. Make sure to
properly adjust the settings of both the function generator and the oscilloscope, and to double check
the components values prior to connecting them. Use the proper connection for the three-terminal
potentiometer. It’s your responsibility to make sure that all components, wires, and measuring
instruments are not faulty.
One thing must take into consideration that switch must open before that all connection
properly connected. A square input applied to RC circuit. The oscilloscope will use to see the
waveform of the transient response of the circuit.
Experiment:
Results:

E1) For the circuit shown, assuming the switch is opened construct a Multisim circuit and perform
Transient Analysis. Build the circuit and adjust the input level to 1-V P (square wave) and a suitable
period (20τ).

Variable Calculation Simulation

 RC 110 6
104.12 106

1. Obtain screenshots (for two cycles) of the response of the oscilloscope for the RC circuit, showing
v1, v2 and v1-2.
2. Show the calculations of τ, on a single-cycle screenshot of the oscilloscope, for the RC circuit.
(Calculate 𝑣𝜏 and take a screenshot with the cursors to show how you obtained τ based on this)

E2) Adjust the input frequency to 1 KHz with the switch closed. Vary the value of R2 and draw the
relationships between R2 (on the horizontal x-axis) vs. τ and vC (∞) (on the vertical y-axis). You
should obtain 2 separate graphs (plot on MATALB or Excel). Use transient analysis.

Conclusion:
This lab helps us in understanding the work of RC circuit. Also we were able to analyze the effect of
resistance on energy stored in capacitor. Also the time constant behavior was analyzed under the
efficiency of resistance.
Post-Lab Questions:

Q1) In E1 , find expressions for vR1 (t ) :

From E1 ckt, (Assume switch is open)

R2 will not come into part.

Since switch is open

For RC circuit
Q2) In E1 , derive expressions for the energy stored in the capacitor.

Q3) In E2 , what is the effect of R2 on the energy stored in C ? Explain.

As   RC , value of resistance is directly proportional to time constant. By increasing or

decreasing the value of R will effect respectively on time required to store energy in capacitor.

Q4) In E2 , what is the time constant of the circuit, when R2 = 0%? Explain.

R  0 the time constant of the circuit is also 0.

When 2
Since   RC  0
