Experiment 1: Calibration of A Volumetric Flask
Experiment 1: Calibration of A Volumetric Flask
Experiment 1: Calibration of A Volumetric Flask
OBJECTIVES
1. To calibrate a Used Volumetric Flask
2. To determine the New Calibration Mark of the Volumetric Flask
INTRODUCTION
Any of 100 mL volumetric flask tolerance is 0.1± mL. calibration of the flask is important
to determined an accurated volume of the flask. Volumetric flask usually calibrated by
measuring the mass and the volume of the flask. The weight of the volumetric flask
should be correct because the density of the water is different from th standard weight
of analytical balance. The calculation for calibrating involved such as weigh th flask,
convert the mass of flask to volume by dividing the density of liquid in the flask and
finally the volume is corrected to the standard temperature.
METHOD
Firstly, the experiment start with prepare a 200 mL distilled water were placed in the
clean anddry beaker and let stand in room temperature for 15 minutes.
Next step is a dry clean 100 mL volumetric flask were weigh accurately with 2 cm
sticker at the centre of the flask. After 15 minutes, the temperature of room temperature
and the temperature of water were measured.
The flask were filled with distiled water up to the mark. The flask were weigh again and
the weight of water in the flask converted using the data on the table provided.
The water were added/ reduce 5 mm from the original vlume and the water were weigh
again.Lastly,The exact distance of the new mark determined using the ratio and the
volume of water.
DATA
CALCULATIONS
At 28.0 °C = 1.0046 mL
5 mm = 0.31858 mL
x mm = 0.0603mL
x mm = 0.0603mm
DISCUSSION
For this experiment, we need to calibrate the volumetric flask and the following data
were obtained:
From the results, the density of water is 0.9957 g/mL and we had calculated the volume
of water which was 99.9397 mL. Then, for the mass of water after addition51 mm of
water above the mark was 1.3153g. From the mass, the volume of water after had been
calculated was 0.31858 mL. Finally, the exact distance for the new mark was
determined by the ratio of volume and distance which was 0.0603mm.
For the precautions, the volumetric flask must be weighed with same analytical balance
to avoid the error in reading. The mark also must be made accurately to avoid
systematic error.
There might be some errors will occur when conducting this experiment. Firstly, the
change in lab temperature will change the calibration of a balance or the volume of
volumetric flask. There are many other sources of random uncertainty in the calibration
process such as the purity of the water used which changes its density.
CONCLUSION
For the conclusion, the exact distance for the new calibration mark was determined by
the ratio of volume and distance which was 0.0603 mm.
