CHAPTER-7
BUS P.T. VOLTAGE SELECTION SCHEME
In double busbar layout s/s where the VT supply for protection and metering is taken from the
busbar connected VTs , depending on the bus to which the circuit is connected the corresponding
bus voltage should be selected for metering & protection. This can be achieved by means of
voltage selection relays. Voltage selection relays are available as self reset relays type VAA51,
VAA21 or electrically reset relays type VAJC11.

As a general rule VTs are not to be paralleled due to the fact that the difference in secondary
voltage can cause circulating current between the VTs leading to overheating of the winding. In
our voltage selection scheme for distance protection, when there is a change over of circuit from
one bus to the other there is a momentary paralleling of VTs . During this change over the bus
coupler will be closed and therefore both buses will be at the same potential and the circulating
current will be negligible. This momentary paralleling of VTs is allowed in voltage selection
scheme for distance protection to avoid possible mal operation of the protection due to
momentary loss of VT supply.

VAA51 voltage selection relay.

This relay is used for selection of VT supply for distance protection relays like PYTS, PYTC, &
PD521 in double busbar installations. For these protection schemes VAPM31 relay is used as VT
fuse failure relay. The selected VT supply for directional relays can also be taken through this
relay. The voltage selection relay contacts of 75C coil used in VAPM31 relay circuit will have a
time delay on pick up so that VAPM31 relay will not pick up first due to contact race during DC
restoration. (After the DC has failed). Similarly a time delayed contact of 75C coil is introduced
on the positive side of distance protection so that the DC is extended to the scheme after the VT
supply is stabilised in the potential circuit of distance scheme.

When VAPM31 relay is used for V.T. supervision scheme 2 sets of fuses per phase should be
provided at the V.T. secondary side as close to the V.T. as possible.

VAA21 Voltage selection relay

This relay is used for selection of VT supply for distance protection relays like Micromho,
Quadramho, Optimho, EPAC in double busbar installations. These distance relays have built in
VT fuse failure scheme. VAA21 relay can be used for selecting VT supply for directional relays
and metering also. Except distance protection, for all other protection & metering voltage
selection relays will have N/C contact of other coil in series, ( As shown in the sketch) to prevent
operation of both coils simultaneously and thereby paralleling of VTs. Sometimes due to
improper operation of isolator auxiliary contacts both coils of the relay will remain picked up and
if one of the buses is dead, then the V.T.connected to that bus may be back charged and thereby
the bus also will get charged. Fatal accident has occurred to maintenance staff due to the above.

When two distance protections are employed for lines as Main-1& Main-2, it is preferable to
have independent voltage selection schemes using VAA21or VAA51self reset relays for Main-

1& Main-2 for redundancy of D.C supply. If electrically reset relay VAJC11 is used for voltage
selection both Main-1 & Main-2 protection can be connected to the same voltage selection relay
without losing the redundancy in D.C. supply.

Bus P.T. voltage selection can be done manually also through ODS selector switch.
Some customers connect the Protection & Metering to line V.T. under normal condition and
under line V.T. fail condition, the protection & metering are transferred to bus V.T. through a
selector switch. The appropriate bus voltage is selected by the voltage selection relay as
described above.
