Lecture 05 Control Theory - System Analysis

This document discusses system analysis for automatic control applications. It covers analyzing systems in the time and frequency domains. Specifically, it examines the time responses of first and second order systems to step and impulse inputs. Key aspects discussed include rise time, settling time, damping ratio and natural frequency. The analysis is applied to examples from cruise control systems.

System analysis

Time response
• The time response represents how the state of a dynamic system changes in time
when subjected to a particular input. Since the models we have derived consist of
differential equations, some integration must be performed in order to
determine the time response of the system

System analysis

System order
• The order of a dynamic system is the order of the highest derivative of its
governing differential equation. Equivalently, it is the highest power of s in the
denominator of its transfer function.

System analysis

Time response of 2nd order system

• Second order systems are commonly encountered in practice, and are the
simplest type of dynamic system to exhibit oscillations. In fact many real higher
order systems are modeled as second order to facilitate analysis
