Sheet 2

This document contains 8 questions about digital communication systems and signals. Question 1 asks to classify systems as linear or nonlinear. Question 2 asks about the linearity and time invariance of a system. Question 3 asks about time variance and invariance of systems. Question 4 asks to find the output of a system given its unit sample response and input. Question 5 asks to find the response of a linear, time-invariant system given its input and impulse response. Questions 6-7 ask to determine the Fourier series expansion and Fourier transform, respectively, of various signals. Question 8 asks about periodicity, representation using Dirac delta functions, and the Fourier transform of a periodically repeated signal.

1. Classify these systems into linear and nonlinear:

(a) y(t) = 2x(t) − 3
(
1 x(t) > 0
(b) y(t) =
0 x(t) ≤ 0
(c) y(t) = e−t x(t)
(d) y(t) = x(t) + y(t − 1)
2. Find out whether the system dened by the input-output relation

y(t) = 3x(t) + x(t − 3)

is linear. Also determine whether it is time invariant.

3. Determine whether the following systems are time-variant or time-invariant
(a) y(t) = [sin 6t] x(t)
(b) y(t) =
R 3t
−∞
x(τ )dτ
(c) y(t) = ex(t)
4. Consider a system with a unit sample response h[n] = 2−n u[n]. If the input to this
system is x[n] = 2δ[n] + 4δ[n − 1] + 4δ[n − 2], nd the output y(n) for 1 ≤ n ≤ 6 and
compute the stability of the system.
5. Consider an LTI system with input x(t) and unit impulse response h(t) specied as:
x(t) = 3t u(−t); h(t) = u(t). Find the response y(t) of the system for the given input.

6. Determine the Fourier series expansion of the following signals

(a) x(t) = sin (2πt) + cos (3πt)
∞

δ t− m +δ t− m
m=−∞
2 2
(c) x(t) = |sin (2πt)|
7. Determine the Fourier transform of each of the following signals:
(a) x1 (t) = e−a|t| , a > 0
1
(b) x2 (t) =
a2 + t2
(c) x3 (t) = 1
Z t
(d) x4 (t) = e−ατ u(τ ) dτ
