(2,1)

D. Development of Concepts/Discussion/Explorations:
Let students explain how they got their answers.

Step 1. Solve for one variable in terms of the other variable of the equations. By
following the step 1, we can obtain equation for finding y in terms of x for the equation 1,
we have:

3 x=−6 y +12
3 x /3=−6 y /3+12 /3
x=−2 y +4

Step 2. Since we already have this equation for finding x, what is the next step?
Substitute the value of the variable found in the first step to the second equation.
Simplify and solve the resulting equation to find the value of the variable.
5 x−8 y=2
5(−2 y + 4)−8 y =2
−10 y +20−8 y=2
−10 y−8 y =2−20
−18 y=−18
y=1

Step 3. Since we have obtained the value of y in the first equation which is equal to 1,
we can then plug it in to the first, second equation (either of the two equation) to get the
y variable but also we can plug it in x=-2y+4 and get y as well which will be easier.
x=−2(1)+4
x=−2+ 4
x=2

Step 4. To check if our answers are correct, we will substitute the value of x and y in any
of the original equations.
3 x+ 6 y=12
5 x−8 y=2

3(2)+6 (1)=12
6+ 6=12
12=12

5(2)−8(1)=2
10−8=2
2=2
E. Practice Exercise:

8 x +4 y=40

2. 2 x+7 y=34
5 x−4 y=−1
F. Summary:
● Solve for one variable (say x) in terms of the other variable (say y) in one of the

● Substitute the value of the variable (x) found in the first step to the same variable
(x) of the second equation. Simplify and solve the resulting equation to find the
value of the variable (x).
● Substitute the value obtained in the second step to any of the original equations
to find the value of the other variable (y).
G. Assessment:
1. 2 x+ y=−5
2 x+3 y =10

In this lesson, the students are expected to:
1. Learn how to solve linear equations using elimination method

Instructional Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities:
● Check the student’s attendance.
● Ask the students what was our previous lesson and what they have learned.

B. Present the following problem:

.Solve the given equations using elimination method:
4x − 3y = 9
7x + 2y = −6.

C. Possible Answers and Solutions:

4 x−3 y=9
7 x +2 y=−6

2(4 x−3 y=9)→ 8 x −6 y=18

3(7 x +2 y=−6)→ 21 x +6 y=−18

8x - 6y = 18

Check:
4 x−3 y=9 [eq. 1]
4 (0)−3(−3)=9
9=9
7 x +2 y=−6 [eq .2]
7(0)+ 2(−3)=−6
−6=−6
D. Development of Concepts/Discussion/Explorations:
Let the students explain how they get their answers.

Step 1: make the equation into its standard form Ax+By=C. But since the equations are
in their standard form then we proceed to step 2.
Step 2: Decide which variable to eliminate. So we decided to eliminate y in order to find
the value of x but the coefficient of y in the first and second equation are not equal.
4 x−3 y=9
7 x +2 y=−6
Step 3: since the coefficient of y in both equations are not equal then we multiply both
equations by appropriate constants so the variable we want to eliminate becomes an
additive inverse of each other.
2(4 x−3 y=9)→ 8 x −6 y=18
3(7 x +2 y=−6) → 21 x +6 y=−18
Step 4: We add the resulting equations.
8x - 6y = 18
+ 21x + 6y =-18
29x =0
Step 5: we find the x.
29x = 0
29 x 0
=
29 29
x=0
Step 6: We Substitute the value of x into one of the equations.
4 x−3 y=9
4 (0)−3 y =9
−3 y=9
−3 y 9
=
−3 −3
y=−3
Step 7: we check the result by substituting the result into the equations.(0,-3)
4 x−3 y=9 [eq. 1]
4 (0)−3(−3)=9
9=9
7 x +2 y=−6 [eq .2]
7(0)+ 2(−3)=−6
−6=−6
E. Practice Exercise:
1. 5 y=3 x +1
y + x=−3
2. y=x
x=− y −2
F. Summary:
How did you apply the steps in the elimination method?
First we arrange the equations to its standard form. Second, we decide which variable
we want to eliminate. Third, we multiply one or both equations by the appropriate
constants so that the variable that we want to eliminate becomes additive inverse of
each other. Fourth, we add the resulting equations. Fifth, we solve for the equation
obtained in step 4. Sixth, we substitute the value of the variable obtained in step 5 into
one of the original equations and we solve for the variable. Lastly, we check our solution
in both original equations.
G. Assessment:
Find the value of x and y using the elimination method.
8x + 3y = 12
5y - 5x = 3
Solving System of Linear Equations by Elimination in Two Variables
Day 3
Grade Level: 8
Strand: Algebra
Competencies Addressed:
Prerequisite Concepts and Skills: Solving Systems of Linear Equations by Graphical Method
and Substitution Method.
About the Lesson: In this lesson, the students are to solve systems of linear equations in two
variables using elimination method.
Objectives:
In this lesson, the students are expected to:
1. Be proficient in solving linear equations in two variables by elimination method.
2. Identify additive inverses to solve the system using the elimination method.

Instructional Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities:
Check the student’s attendance.
Ask the students what was our previous lesson and what they have learned.

B. Present the following problem:

Solve the given equation by elimination method.
2x - 3y = 5
3x + 5y = -2
C. Possible Answers and Solutions:
2x - 3y = 5 equation 1
3x + 5y = -2 equation 2

Eliminate x, we have
3(2x - 3y = 5) → 6x - 9y = 15
-2(3x + 5y = -2) → -6x - 10y = 4

-19y = 19
−19 y 19
=
−19 −19
y = -1
Substitute y = -1 to equation 1, we have
2x - 3y = 5
2x - 3(-1) = 5
2x + 3 = 5
2x + 3 - 3 = 5 - 3, APE
2x = 2
2x 2
=
2 2
x=1
The solution is x = 1 and y = -1 or (1, -1).

Checking:
The solution is x = 1 and y = -1 or (1, -1).

Equation 1 Equation 2
2x - 3y = 5 3x + 5y = -2
2(1) - 3(-1) = 5 3(1) + 5(-1) = -2
2+3=5 3 - 5 = -2
5=5 -2 = -2
Therefore, (1, -1) is the solution to the equation 2x - 3y = 5 and 3x + 5y = -2.

D. Development of Concepts/Discussion/Explorations:
Let the students explain their answer.

Step 1. Make the equations in standard form Ax + By = C. And since our equations are
already in the standard form. We will proceed to step 2.

2x - 3y = 5 equation 1 Ax + By = C

3x + 5y = -2 equation 2 Ax + By = C
Step 2. Choose which variable we will be eliminating. We choose x to be eliminated and
as what we’ve observed the coefficient of x in equation 1 and equation 2 are not equal.

2x - 3y = 5 equation 1
3x + 5y = -2 equation 2

Step 3. Since we will be eliminating x. Choose a number that we will be multiplying in

equation 1 and equation 2 that has an additive inverse in each other.

3(2x - 3y = 5) → 6x - 9y = 15
-2(3x + 5y = -2) → -6x - 10y = 4

Step 4. Since we multiplied 3 to equation 1 and -2 to equation 2. And we see that the
coefficients in two equations are in the additive inverse. So, add the resulting equations.
3(2x - 3y = 5) → 6x - 9y = 15
-2(3x + 5y = -2) → -6x - 10y = 4

-19y = 19

Step 5. We eliminate x and solve for the equation obtained in 4.

3(2x - 3y = 5) → 6x - 9y = 15
-2(3x + 5y = -2) → -6x - 10y = 4

-19y = 19
−19 y 19
=
−19 −19
y = -1
Step 6. Since we have the value of y = -1. Substitute it to equation 1 to get the value for
x. We have,
2x - 3y = 5
2x - 3(-1) = 5
2x + 3 = 5
2x + 3 - 3 = 5 - 3, APE
2x = 2
2x 2
=
2 2
x=1
Step 7. Since we have values for x = 1 and y = -1. We will check the ordered pair if it is a
solution to the system.

x = 1 and y = -1 or (1, -1).

Equation 1 Equation 2
2x - 3y = 5 3x + 5y = -2
2(1) - 3(-1) = 5 3(1) + 5(-1) = -2
2+3=5 3 - 5 = -2
5=5 -2 = -2
Therefore, (1, -1) is the solution to the equation 2x - 3y = 5 and 3x + 5y = -2.

E. Practice Exercise:
Solve the following system of equations using the elimination method.

1
1.) x - y - 8 = 0 2.) x - y=5
2
2x + y - 1 = 0 4x - 2y = 7
F. Summary:
7 Steps in Solving Linear Equations in Two Variables by Elimination
Step 1: Arrange the equation to its standard form.
Step 2: Decide which variable you want to eliminate
Step 3: Multiply one or both equations by the appropriate constants so that the variable
that you want to eliminate becomes additive inverse of each other.
Step 4: Add the resulting equations.
Step 5: Solve for the equation obtained in step 4.
Step 6: Substitute the value of the variable obtained in step 5 into one of the original
equations and solve for the variable.
Step 7: Check your solution in both original equations.
G. Assessment:
Solve the following system of equations using the elimination method.

1) 2x - 4 = y 2) 4x + 3y = -1
6x - 3y = 12 6x - y = 15

Solving System of Linear Equations by Elimination in Three Variables

Day 4
Grade Level: 8
Strand: Algebra
Competencies Addressed:
Prerequisite Concepts and Skills: Solving Systems of Linear Equations by Graphical Method
and Substitution Method.
About the Lesson: In this lesson, the students are to solve systems of linear equations in three
variables using elimination method.
Objectives:
In this lesson, the students are expected to:
1. Be proficient in solving linear equations in three variables by elimination method.
2. Identify additive inverses to solve the system using the elimination method.

Instructional Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities:
Check the student’s attendance.
Ask the students what was our previous lesson and what they have learned.

B. Present the following problem:

1. x + y−z=1
−2 x− y +3 z=4
5 x−3 y−2 z=1

C. Possible Answers and Solutions:

x + y−z=1
−2 x− y +3 z=4
5 x−3 y−2 z=1
We start by choosing two of the three equations and eliminate a variable, giving
us an equation in two variables.
x + y−z=1
−2 x− y +3 z=4
________________
−x +2 z =5
We then repeat this process with a different pair of equations giving us a
second two variables.

x + y−z=1
5 x−3 y−2 z=1
_______________
8 x−5 z=4

We can then use elimination to solve this system of two equations in two variables to
find the values of those two variables. (Multiply the first equation of two variables by 8 so
that we can eliminate the x variable.

(−x +2 z=5)8
8 x−5 z=4
= −8 x +16 z=40

−8 x +16 z=40
8 x−5 z=4
_______________
11 z=44
z=4
Solve for another variable by substituting the obtained variable (z) to find the other
variable. We’ll use the first equation since it has the smallest coefficient.

−x +2 z =5
−x +2(4)=5
−x +8=5
−x=5−8
−x=−3
x=3
After we get the values of the two variables, we can substitute those values back into any of the
original equations to find the value of the third variable.
x + y−z=1
3+ y −4=1
y−1=1
y=2

(x , y , x)=(3 , 2 , 4)

If we substitute these three values of x,y, and z into the three original equations:
3+2−4=1
−2.3+2−3.4=4
5.3−3.2−2.4=1

1=1
4=4
1=1
We will find that these values for x,y and z are common solution to all three
equations. This confirms that our answer is correct.

Development of Concepts/Discussion/Explorations:
D. Practice Exercise:
x−2 y +3 z=9
−x +3 y−z=−6
2 x−5 y+ 5 z =17

x−2 y +3 z=9
−x +3 y−z=−6
_________________
y +2 z=3

(x−2 y +3 z=9)−2

−2 x+ 4 y −6 z=−18
2 x−5 y+ 5 z =17
_________________
− y−z =−1

y +2 z=3
− y−z =−1
_____________
z=2

y +2 z=3
y +2(2)=3
y + 4=3
y=3−4
y=−1

x−2(−1)+3(2)=9
x +2+6=9
x=1

The solution is the ordered triple (1 ,−1 , 2)

E. Summary:

Step1. Determine a variable to eliminate.

Step2. Repeat step 1 with a different pair of equations giving us a second two variables.
Step3. Eliminate one variable from the two equations obtained to solve for one variable.
Step4. Solve for another variable by substituting the obtained variable on Step3 to find
the other variable.
Step5. After getting the values of the two variables, solve for the remaining variable by
substituting the values of the two variables into the equation.
Step6. Verify the solution set to the original equation.
