INTEGRATION OF HOME-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES AMONG THE

GRADE-5 ORION PUPILS IN INCREASING ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS FOR
SCHOOL YEAR 2022-2023

I. Context and Rationale

Over the past years, the entire construct of what constitutes a “learning classroom” has shifted.
Schools, teachers, students, and families prepare for a new way of learning, COVID-19 has re-defined where
and how students learn. Many students have utilized their homes, their backyards, and their communities for
learning, finding that making those connections to the outdoors and local community has been a safe and
important component to education.
Global environment has undergone substantial changes during the last few decades and is challenged
by a myriad of environmental degradation issues. Human activities are solely responsible for the global
climate change. Global warming, destruction of the ozone layer, volcanic eruptions have resulted to human
activities like industrialization, deforestation, urbanization and production of goods that harm our
environment. Looking at the current scenario, environmental awareness becomes a necessity in order to
avoid further exploitation of our natural biotic systems.

The Philippines' rich biodiversity is under threat, mostly from human activities, including
deforestation and forest degradation, illegal fishing and illicit wildlife trade. Environment Secretary Roy A.
Cimatu has called on Filipinos to unite and help the government in addressing the country’s most pressing
environmental problems. that Filipinos “have not yet achieved that level of united consciousness needed to
save our environment from the problems that humanity has caused.

In view of the pressing concerns and issues on the environment, the Department of Education
(DepEd) urges all public and private schools to lead the role on environmental awareness by enhancing
environmental education and by pursuing effective school-based activities that seek to preserve and protect
the environment. This is in pursuant to Republic Act (R.A.) No. 9512, entitled “An Act to Promote
Environmental Education and for Other Purposes.” This suggests to intensifying lessons regarding
environment on all science subjects, promote students’ participation in environmental activities and

advocacies and instill in their minds the need to preserve and protect the environment; establishing the
Youth for Environment in School Organizations (YES- O) pursuant to DepEd Order No. 72, s. 2003 by all
public and private elementary (Grades IV-VI) and secondary schools

Environmental education raises environmental awareness among human populations and provide
opportunities to acquire the knowledge, values, attitudes and skills needed to protect the environment.
Raising public awareness and enhancing the protective attitude towards the environmental issues,
environmental education plays very strategic and important role. It allows individuals to explore
environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to improve the environment. As a result,
individuals develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and have the skills to make informed
and responsible decisions. An increase in the environmental awareness will reverse the exploitation. With
our learners, it may also elevate their concerns through their talents and skills as we move forward toward a
better society, one that can mitigate and adapt to climate change.

School serves a good place to simulate social issues related to science concepts such as global
warming, mining, types of pollution, disaster readiness and risk reduction, and the like. As an example, the
integration of practical applications of the science lessons in the issues of the environment. Various activities
to engage students in educative experiences may be provided as part of the school programs to sustain
learning experiences of students while inside and outside the school (Abrea, 2015).

Aside from having participating in different activities related to environmental education, Science
teachers can use technological applications to engage students in advocating environmental education. They
can share infographics, video presentations, and blog posts related to environmental protection and
conservation. Our students are considered as ‘digital natives’ hence, tasks which can enhance their
technological skills while having social skills are recommended. The collaboration of school’s stakeholders
is important in the processes involved in sustaining the environmental education programs.

A teacher therefore plays an important role in providing environmental awareness and developing a
positive attitude towards environment among students by shaping cognitive, affective and psychomotor or
the cognitive domains simultaneously. Science teachers are expected to implement the science curriculum to

guide the students in achieving indispensable skills of the 21st century as well as to obtain the target goals of
the Department of Education by engaging the students in discussions of relevant issues that involve science,
technology, and environment. Another issue is that the lack of environmental knowledge, awareness, and
behavior among the students require the intervention of committed teachers to play their role in
implementing environmental education at school so that these students’ awareness and behavior towards
their environment can be developed. These challenges need to be resolved to ensure the effectiveness of
environmental education in terms of changing the behaviors of the younger generation towards responsible
environmental behavior.

An effective learning environment helps students to realize their limitations and turn it into learning.
As we pivot our strategy to adapt to this new world of learning, teachers are still committed to continue
providing environment-based learning opportunities to students. Learning at home can be fun and
challenging with the assistance of their family. In an effort to continue learning during the COVID-19 crisis,
we put together activities to help connect with our students to nature, even at home.

II. Action Research Questions

This action research will be conducted to increase the level of environmental awareness of
Grade 5 Orion pupils through integration of home-based environmental activities. Specifically, the
study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of environmental awareness of Grade 5 Orion pupils of Legazpi Port Elementary
School?
2. How effective is the home-based environmental intervention in increasing the level of environmental
awareness of the pupils?
3. What implications can be deduced from the result of this study in increasing the level of pupils’
environmental awareness?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

Home-based environmental Activities

In this intervention, the teacher will provide Home-based learning environmental activities
containing simple tasks for the learners that are deemed relevant in increasing the level of environmental
awareness of the pupils. They will perform tasks that will demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and
serve as evidence of learning. Combining all the inputs and tasks would result to an effective transfer of
learning to the learners.

Parents Talk (EnviTok)

The researcher will conduct a regular kumustahan with the learners in the group chat and parents
during the release and submission of modules. It will be an avenue to clarify task and other concerns.

Scheduling

This is an organized outline of learning goals that is essential for the activity of the learners. Using
this technique, the learners will be able to indicate when planned activities should be accomplished.
However, the researcher proposed a study plan using the format on the next page.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS:

a. Participation and/or other sources of Data and Information –

The study will be conducted among the 29 learners of Grade 5 Orion pupils and the data will

come from both learners and their respective parents/guardians of Grade 5-Orion of Legazpi Port

Elementary School for the 3rd quarter of this school year 2022-2023.

b. Data Gathering Methods - A checklist evaluation after each task will be utilized to

determine the level of awareness of the learners based on their reactions in doing the home-based

environmental tasks. It shall also determine which among the activities they found engaging and had

increase their awareness. Another checklist will get the reactions from parents about the implications of

integrating environmental awareness activities as supplementary tasks.

c. The researcher will coordinate to the other Grade 5 teachers for the validation of the

checklists to their five learners and five parents. This is to check on the validity, reliability, sufficiency and

authenticity of the checklists which the researcher will be use to her actual respondents.

The checklists will be distributed and collected from both learners and parents/guardians

during the Distribution/retrieval time on a given date and upon the approval of this action research

proposal, provided that parents/guardians and teacher will strictly observe the health protocols

imposed by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for COVID-19.

d. Data Analysis Plan - This action research will be employing the descriptive method. The research

will describe the level of environmental awareness towards their reactions in doing the home-based

environmental tasks. The researcher shall also analyze which among the activities keep the learners

engaged.

The responses from the parents will also be analyzed as to the implications of integrating

home-based environmental activities to enhance the level of awareness of the learners.
