    This paper introduces a database of 34 field-measured building occupant behavior datasets collected from 15 countries and 39 institutions across 10 climatic zones covering various building types in both commercial and residential sectors. This is a comprehensive global database about building occupant behavior. The database includes occupancy patterns (i.e., presence and people count) and occupant behaviors (i.e., interactions with devices, equipment, and technical systems in buildings). Brick schema models were developed to represent sensor and room metadata information. The database is publicly available, and a website was created for the public to access, query, and download specific datasets or the whole database interactively.     Providing good indoor environmental quality (IEQ) that satisfies building occupants is an essential component for sustainable and healthy buildings. Existing studies mainly analysed the importance of environmental factors to subject's satisfaction, but overlooked the influence by personal factor, especially the psychological dimensions. We aims to explore the important personal factors that affect subject's IEQ satisfaction. We conducted a cross-sectional assessment which surveyed 1162 individuals on their satisfaction with 18 IEQ parameters and their corresponding personal factors (job satisfaction, life satisfaction, Big Five personality traits, sex and age) in nine air-conditioned commercial buildings in Singapore. Analyses using proportional odds ordinal logistic regression suggested occupants with higher job and life satisfactions were, respectively, 1.8 – 3.1 and 1.4 – 2.2 times more likely satisfied with the indoor environment.     We surveyed seven Green Mark certified air-conditioned commercial buildings (666 responses) in Singapore about their satisfaction with the indoor environment. We used a 7-point scale to evaluate subjects' satisfaction with 18 Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) parameters. We also asked follow up questions on the reason(s) of dissatisfaction. We found that occupants were most satisfied with dress code (85 % satisfaction), electrical light (84 %) and cleanliness (81 %), while they were most dissatisfied with sound privacy (40% dissatisfaction), personal control (29%) and temperature (29%). Nevertheless, about 78 % of the participants expressed satisfaction with their overall workspace environment. Our results indicate achieving a high occupant satisfaction for some IEQ factors is harder than others.     This project had two primary objectives: (1) develop a lighting and circadian health module for CBE's Occupant IEQ survey for use as an ASHRAE/USGBC/CIBSE Performance Measurement Protocol for commercial building basic level assessment; and (2) conduct a feasibility study that looks into the strengths and weaknesses of using an open-source wearable sensor system that measures skin temperature (ST), illuminance levels, and user activity for possible use in an ASHRAE advanced level assessment.

    Every week an estimated 20 million people collectively spend hundreds of millions of hours playing massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). Here the authors investigate whether avatars in one such game, the World of Warcraft (WoW), convey accurate information about their players' personalities. They assessed consensus and accuracy of avatar-based impressions for 299 WoW players. The authors examined impressions based on avatars alone, and images of avatars presented along with usernames. The personality impressions yielded moderate consensus (avatar-only mean ICC = .32; avatar plus username mean ICC = .66), but no accuracy (avatar only mean r = .03; avatar plus username mean r = .01). A lens-model analysis suggests that observers made use of avatar features when forming impressions, but the features had little validity. Discussion focuses on what factors might explain the pattern of consensus but no accuracy, and on why the results might differ from those based...

    Radiant heating and cooling systems have the potential to save energy and are widely used in zero net energy buildings. Their positive and negative impacts on indoor environmental quality and, in particular, thermal comfort compared to all-air systems are still debated in the literature. This paper presents indoor environmental quality survey results from 3,892 respondents in 60 office buildings located in North America. 34 (2,247 respondents) of these buildings utilized all-air systems and 26 (1,645 respondents) utilized radiant systems as primary conditioning system. Our results indicate that radiant and all-air buildings have equal indoor environmental quality, including acoustic performance, with a tendency towards improved temperature satisfaction in radiant buildings.

    To choose restaurants and coffee shops, people are increasingly relying on social-networking sites. In a popular site such as Foursquare or Yelp, a place comes with descriptions and reviews, and with profile pictures of people who frequent them. Descriptions and reviews have been widely explored in the research area of data mining. By contrast, profile pictures have received little attention. Previous work showed that people are able to partly guess a place's ambiance, clientele, and activities not only by observing the place itself but also by observing the profile pictures of its visitors. Here we further that work by determining which visual cues people may have relied upon to make their guesses; showing that a state-of-the-art algorithm could make predictions more accurately than humans at times; and demonstrating that the visual cues people relied upon partly differ from those of the algorithm.

    Homes are important: People devote much of their thought, time, and resources to selecting, modifying, and decorating their living spaces, and they may be devastated when their homes must be sold or are destroyed. Yet the empirical psychological literature says virtually nothing about the roles that homes might play in people's lives. We argue that homes provide an informative context for a wide variety of studies examining how social, developmental, cognitive, and other psychological processes play out in a consequential real-world setting. The topic of homes is also well suited to collaborations with a diverse array of disciplines ranging from architecture and engineering to sociology and law. We illustrate the potential insights to be gained from studying homes with an exploratory study that maps the psychological ambiances (e.g., romance, comfort, togetherness) that people desire in their homes; we identify six broad ambiance dimensions (restoration, kinship, storage, stimul...

A rapidly growing body of research has accompanied the meteoric rise of Facebook as social scientists assess the impact of Facebook on social life. In addition, researchers have recognized the utility of Facebook as a novel tool to observe behavior in a naturalistic setting, test hypotheses, and recruit participants. However, research on Facebook emanates from a wide variety of disciplines, with results being published in a broad range of journals and conference proceedings, making it difficult to keep track of various findings. And because Facebook is a relatively recent phenomenon, uncertainty still exists about the most effective ways to do Facebook research.     ABSTRACT a b s t r a c t Millions of people interact in the context of massively-multi-player-online-role-play-games (MMORPGs). Here we address whether MMORPG usernames convey accurate information about users' personalities. Impressions based on email addresses show some accuracy but MMORPG's are different because they provide little accountability, with little expectation that users will ever meet in person. We assessed con-sensus and accuracy in impressions based on 1357 (153 females) World of Warcraft users. Ratings of the usernames in terms of the Big Five dimensions yielded strong consensus (mean ICC = .46) but low accu-racy (mean r = .01). Lens-model analysis suggest that features of the usernames have little validity, but observers used them anyway. Discussion focuses on why results might differ from those based on email addresses.
